All hip hop is sampled. That's just the way it is
some things will never change
Lol
I see/like what you did there. 👍
Amen to that
Haha!
it wasnt a tupac song it was a bruce hornsby cover... never forget that
This song was released in September of 1986
Reached #1 in December 1986.
Bruce Hornsby the best pianist in popular music. He's just amazing.
Take a look at Jamie Cullum for some great piano music, especially his jazzed up cover of Please Don't Stop the Music.
Yes, I'd put him on the talent scale with Billy Joel and Elton John and that's saying A LOT!
@@alexakl6445 oh yeah, the best song to demonstrate Billy Joel’s talent is the legend of Billy the Kid
Hornsby is mainly a highly-respected session musician. The more you listen to his piano the more often you'll recognize it on the tracks of MANY other artists.
The grateful dead and Mr Hornsby are not strangers, that's for sure
This wasn’t a studio session backtrack.
Bonnie Raitt I cant make you love me...and people love the piano
Right I love his music
He's not a session musician. A session musician is that unknown guy that just shows up to play on someone's record and is not considered a collaborator on the song. Bruce is a highly acclaimed musician with a long history of releases, and his appearance on someone else's album is a big deal.
1986 I heard this song for the first time. It made quite an impression.
That intro stopped me dead in my tracks!
I discovered Tupac’s version today. I was a Hornsby fan back then and was up against the stage watching this live.
Both versions are amazing, both are powerful. Much love.
I just discovered Tupac's version yesterday myself. I was 36 back then...back in the days when you actually could get to the box office early and buy a seat that put you up against the stage.
music does t6his, ive found artists listening to covers then looking up the original i have found newer artists that i love now that i didnt know existed before the cover. regardless both Bruce and Tupac were phenomenal, worthy of our appreciation.
Imagine Tupac listening hearing this song for the first time , he must have felt the same joy as you did !!!
And then gangster Tupac said I think I'll steal this song and pretend I'm creative. Fail. Tupac was dumb and now he's dead. Take him off your wall and bow to a better idol. Find artists actually have talent and something to say.
Yeah, that's why he sampled it and probably paid a good dime for it. 😄
@@flarica64 he sampled it without permission and later Bruce gave him permission… do better be better

@@FUBAR1986 That's fine. I guess back in the day people were not that educated about how to go about using other musicians' music. It is all good.
He's just killing it on the piano.
Steinway looking down smiling...
General rule of thumb: whenever you hear ANY Hip Hop track, Google where it was sampled from…because the biggest ones almost always are
Exactly. The best tunes are ripped off.
@@SteveA308 True. Even Alien Ant Farm's version of Smooth Criminal....It was pretty good, but you can never beat the original tune.
yeah
@@axelfoley1406 yeah
@@SteveA308 The best hip hop/ rap tunes are at least.
This song started getting airplay in the summer of '86, before the album dropped. Once I got my hands on a copy it played nonstop - side 1, side 2, side 1, side 2...and also this track over and over LOUD!
Part of the reason this song was sampled was not only because it’s such a dope melody, but also because this song also talked about racism and segregation.
yes!
I remember growing up when this was released back in 1986, some of the best songs came out in the 80 and 90, 👏👏🙌🙌🔥🔥
I've never heard 1 song of Tupac. I know The Way It Is by Bruce Hornsby word for word. Grew up with it.
So many people miss the line “but don’t you believe them” because he is hopeful. People say “that’s just the way it is“, and he says “but don’t you believe them“ because you can make change. You really need to check out the lyrics. As a hiphop fan I can’t believe you didn’t.
His piano playing is fantastic and very unique
I grew up with this song. This is the real thing the classic. Enjoy the genius. We had the best music. I was blessed with great music those years.
Bruce has several bangers, all worthy of checking out....
Mandolin Rain, Every Little Kiss, The Valley Road, Jacob's Ladder...
✌😎
What the hell are bangers? Hornsby is one the most amazing piano players in the history of modern music. Don Henley would agree with me all day long.

I wish Tupac and Bruce could have done a collab on this song. Bruce really liked Tupac's version as well😊
You were right bro 1986.the tupac version was the first down load i ever did.,. Love the message ! Things have to change ! Bruce was visionary with this message
The song song came out in 1984, on Bruce Hornsby and the Range 1st Album, The Way It Is.
Real Musicians back then.
They got all the music they'll ever need, just sample someone elses music.
Such a unique player. You can tell his style on a track even if you’ve never heard it before. Legend
for all the haters, Bruce signed off on this, he liked it. Tupac asked in good faith and we all got to enjoy it all over again.
Bruce killed it. Great song when it came out. 35 years later, even better
1986 I loved it the moment I heard it in 86 and love the message don't believe we change the future being we have made real changes and I am proud of artist like this who help change thinking we have more work to do but change is possible. Awesome
I had never heard the Tupac version until today!
A favorite of mine...truth.💜
I wore this cassette out learning to play this when it came out. I haven't sat at a piano in 20 years, but if I ever do again, I'd give this one a shot again. It's a really fun play. Probably one of the best song writers of this era. He's still killing it today.
There’s both black and white smoking crack tonight…
Both songs are masterclass..
Great reaction pal. His Woodstock performance is fantastic, at the beginning, he actually introduces this song as Tupac’s and not his own, this was only 3 years after Tupac’s murder too...
I know there is a ton of love for Tupac! He made a genius move to sample this song. It is a great song!
Hardly a sample, basically a cover!
Written by a White young man from Virginia to talk about the injustice he saw in the world. Saw him last year, he was still great
Times were different back then.
I love the way the tough parts of the lyrics are in a minor key (but still heartfelt). Then when he says Don't you belive it it turns into a hopeful beautiful inspiring major key. So beautiful.
I didnt know it was a sample until about a year ago.. my bro showed me this and blew my mind
Channel Nine in Australia since the 90's, still uses the piano rifts from this song as part of their Saturday night news Sports short report background music as of Jan 2024.
Kinda bugs me that this song has some of the most powerful racial justice lyrics outside of hip hop, and all that most black reactors can manage to say about it is, "Tupac sampled this!"
Or "He Sampled (stole) this from Tupac!"
@@cleekmaker00
I mean, since Tupac is still alive, it stands to reason that he also has a time machine...
I feel you. They also don't seem to notice Bruce is PLAYING THE EFF OUT OF THAT PIANO
Think you need to add a Bruce Hornsby poster to your wall 😂
Tupac didn't just sample this song, he took the entire idea.
I love this song ...this was absolutely incredible ...thanku so much you rock holla ...much love and god bless x
TUPAC USED A DEMO FOR HIS SONG "" CHANGES "" , BUT
BRUCE HORNSBY AND THE RANGE INTRODUCED THIS SONG TOO THE U , S , IN 1986 , BH IS THE WRITTER AND SINGER OF
"" THAT'S THE WAY IT IS "" ORIGINAL ,
This was released in 1986 great choice. Enjoy
Great song. Genius piano playing. I heard it in my Junior year at LSU Baton Rouge, Louisiana...and you guessed it right, l am a Jamaican Reggae musician...former radio host at KLSU campus radio station. Fantastic playing by BH.l graduated in 1991 from the College of Engineering and adopted that sound as my mantra song. 👍🎹👍
He did a great live steamed show last summer. So good.
Nice reaction-glad you showed appreciation for Bruce and TuPac. Song sticks in your head-but your appreciation for the talent was terrific.
The world needs this song right now !
I can confirm Tupac did pay Bruce Hornsby in royalties to use his piano skills According to Hornsby, he was notified that his work was being used on one of the many posthumous 2Pac albums when a cassette with “Changes” on it arrived in his mail. ... “And I must say I like the checks,” Hornsby said of the royalties he receives from “Changes.”12 Sep 2011
Listen to more Bruce!
I'm 74, the BEST MUSIC IN THE WORLD was written and sung in the mid 60's, 70's & 80's. I believe this sing was 1985 by Bruce Hornsby
The Hornsby arrangement is fabulous.
Tupac had good taste in his sample selections. This song came out in ‘86.
Everyone here: Bruce is touring! I’ve got my tix!!!!
It still sound's fresh as fuck
Bruce was the keyboard player for the Grateful Dead, and he has Spike's respect. Weird, huh?
You should really read the lyrics. This song is amazing in every way
Yup ! 🎹📝
The instruments are amazing but the message of the song goes deep into the soul. He’s not really listening to the lyrics, just talking about Tupac.
@@peeweelien8363 is he? oh, what a waste of a reaction
@@peeweelien8363 This song moved me to my core, the original Bruce version. It did that 35 years ago. I don't even want to watch this "reaction" bullshit thing. Tupac whatever. This song rocks and I'm gonna walk away now because I don't want this guy to degrade Hornsby in any way.
@@peeweelien8363 He's just being an idiot on UA-cam. This is such an amazing song for every reason.
The song was released in September 1986
Yep, know both tunes. Loved Tupac and yes, Hornsby was my era,. I was fortunate to catch him live at a music festival. Cool you checked this out.
This was recorded before Tupac. 1990 I believe. Awesome message, timeless performance!
“This song can’t be older than ‘86.” Bingo! 😂
There would be no rap without sampled white music
I know both songs. Graduated high school in 85
1986, It was their debut album.
My senior year of high school/freshman year of college…great album.
Wayyy back in the 80's when this dropped we knew he was ahead of the curve, if there is one thing i wish to impart to the younger generations watching this, get past the sampling part (not hating on Tupac as i LOVE him and his music) but i want you to listen to the lyrics the way we did and thus understand the genius of Mr. Bruce Hornsby & the Range.
I was two years old when this song was a hit
in an interview, he stated that he wrote the song back in 1984 in his garage. the first i heard it was back around in 1986.
I first heard it in '88 !!!!! BH is a big fan of Keith Jarrett !
Listen to Black Cow by Steely Dan... Bring back memories?
i'm a classic piano player, what can i say? from 5:25 to 5:53 it's a paradise
I had just finished ten years in the Marines !!!
It was actually released in 1986. Bruce Hornsby and the Range won best new artist or group Grammy that year. They are from Norfolk VA and I was in the Navy stationed there at the time 😊
well they passed a law in '64
to give those who ain't got a little more
but it only goes so far
'cause the law don't change another's mind
when all it sees at the hiring time
is the line on the color bar...
except for talking over two of the greatest piano solos ever recorded, this was a nice reaction...
I've had this on LP since it debuted 😎
Tupuc always loved this song
Lesson learned. When listening to a hip-hop track and you hear actual MUSIC or something that sounds melodic ... it was JACKED. Rap producers make (some, not all) beats. They don't write or play music (with FEW exceptions). And that's just the way it is ;)
That awkward moment when you find out Bruce approved of Tupac's version and music: "I was sort of floored by him. I thought he was so clever, and really profound, and deep. There’s a lot of gravitas to Tupac’s music, to me."
You're clearly not appreciating this song. LISTEN TO THE DAMN LYRICS . Tupac loved this song and there's a reason why he sampled it. Listen to the lyrics
sampled or stole, never saw where he gave credit to bruce hornsby and all the reaction vids thought this was a tupac song
@@ewokvn As long as Hornsby got paid, it wasn't "stolen."
@@ewokvn I can confirm Tupac did pay Bruce Hornsby in royalties to use his piano skills According to Hornsby, he was notified that his work was being used on one of the many posthumous 2Pac albums when a cassette with “Changes” on it arrived in his mail. ... “And I must say I like the checks,” Hornsby said of the royalties he receives from “Changes.”12 Sep 2011
The one, the only, the original. Bruce Hornsby. Classic!!
Bruce Hornsby wrote the song in his garage.
1986… i was a jr in high school haha
Bruce! The former keyboardist for the Grateful Dead

What a wonderful reaction but, beautiful boy, even for those who will not have known Tupac's sampling, that piano intro is a classic and irresistible draw for its sheer beauty.
Now. when you get into the lyrics and subject matter, written and sung by a white man who grew up with black friends, you understand why Tupac sampled it.
I used to listen to this song all the time. Never knew it was sampled by anyone.
Bruce was a visionary he sang things the common man could relate to no matter what your skin color is n I think Tupac recognized that they collaborated together n did this song together I think but it's fricken beautiful ❤️❤️
I stand corrected this song The Way It Is was released in 1986.
I was 2 back in '87
One of two songs by Bruce Hornsby & the Range sampled by Tupac
I'm not sure why he had to rewind it?.... This song means a lot. He's a guy from around my area and I like him for that. He's also a guy that says alot in his music... I will drop another local guy, Dave Matthews in the discussion...
I'm from the NC area near that part of VA. There's a down to Earth soulfulness one picks up from the people there. "Every Little Kiss" , "Mandolin Rain", "The Old Valley Road", "The Show Goes On", and "Fields of Grey" all are repeat playlists by Hornsby
80s...I've this song been listening for years
Tupac knew a great riff when he heard it.
Woman to Woman by Joe Cocker will sound plenty familiar to you as well... Like legendary familiar, like "No way is it this" familiar.
Every reaction I’m watching missed that this song was pac approved.
It shows the genius of Tupac.....sitting and listening to other genres of music to find other melodies that just simply bang.
its called theft
The genius of Tupac??? How about the genius of the guy who wrote it and played the piano?? Assign the talent where it applies.
That takes no genius !
@@ewokvn You think Bruce Hornsby wasn't credited?
This amazing song was from 1987. Anyone feel Tupac should have given some sort of reference or acknowledgement to Bruce for 'sampling' this classic song from 1987 for his own track 'Changes'?
1984 brotha. I wonder what he thinks about his second verse in today's current climate
Released in September 1986 . . . . .
He doesn't say oh yeah He's not the f****** Kool-Aid man
1986 that's just the way it is number one hit Bruce Hornsby in the range
If you listen to ALL THIS LOVE by DeBarge you will here another Biggie Smalls sample
It's always cracked me up all the shade thrown at Elvis saying he "ripped off" black music while hip hop (black music) constantly samples (rips off) "white" music. And before anyone freaks out, "white" and "black" are socially excepted terms/labels used to describe certain genres of music. So I don't want to hear it.
Now it's 30 years or so later and how much has sadly NOT changed? Here and there progress, tho in the broad sense things remain the same
