This song came out in the late 80's if I remember, a time when social issues were not talked about much. But this song really made a person think. Great talent..
Me too, I am a 65 year young woman, first generation College graduate, first Generation High School graduate, I was raised so badly I told myself at a very early age to not grow up to become someone like my parents, don’t get me wrong I loved both of my parents when I got to be with them, but those times were tough because of alcohol and domestic violence which landed them in jail or psychiatric hospital several different times. I left “home” at 14. Got a job and now my Grandson who I was lucky to raise is getting ready to graduate college this coming December, so I am proof that things can definitely change, so don’t you believe them. Love your reaction.
A lot of people miss the optimistic theme if this song. He's not reaigned to it just being the way it is. Instead its the characters in the song saying so, and he's saying "no, don't believe that. We can be better".
There is a strong feeling in the south of tradition, and this makes folks despair of change. It’s a very southern concept, “that’s just the way it is.”
Great commentary on this song. Bruce Hornsby is such an incredible pianist. He accompanies Bonnie Raitt on her song. “I can’t make you love me”. One of the most beautiful breakup songs ever recorded. I hope you will find time for it.
I have loved this song since it first came out, and I had loved the piano on Raitt's song from the moment that came out, but I didn't learn until a year ago that was Hornsby playing piano for Raitt.
Bruce Hornsby is an amazing Human Being. Seen him umpteen times with his band and both opening for and then performing with the Grateful Dead. As for the video being blocked, it seems strange because I've seen many reactors do it, with no problems. You Tube is just waaaay too fickle, so sad. Doesn't stop Bruce's talent though.
If you go out for a long drive, just put a Bruce album on and roll away on those incredible notes. He is a legend and this felt right to Tupac to use. Brilliant!✌✌🎶🎶
You need not wonder why Hornsby became a temporary member of the Grateful Dead, when Brent Midland passed. Bruce was what the band needed at that time, as they readied their regular, new, keyboardist for an arduous schedule.
Hiii!! From Argentina !! I k ex this SONG in the 86…!! I loves this in this moment!! Unforgettable!! El ton John Said: He’s the Best piano man that I never heard!! Loveee to everybodyyy!! 🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️!!!
I got to see Bruce & The Range back in the 90s at Denver's Rainbow Music Hall (which was torn down years ago). That was truly one of the most magical concerts I've seen.
...ah but don't you believe them". Timeless song that's as relevant now as it was when he wrote it. This song is about as perfect as a song can be. His piano playing is incredible to listen to but even better to see him play. Watch the music video if you haven't seen it.
💙Well done; glad you took the time to dive into the lyrics. Have loved this track since it first came out, and it still moves me and motivates me to this day.
Check out his Album "Harbor Lights" for some of finest Piano Moments like : 1. "WHAT A TIME" 2. "HARBOR LIGHTS" & 3. "PASTURES OF PLENTY "... Does not disappoint .
About racism and classism. Many people in lower income are treated like crap regardless of color. Racism has improved since the 60s, but still needs more. Classism is worse, people idolize celebrities and billionaires more than ever. Billionaires and celebrities are just people, often horrible people since when you can do anything, you may not think if you should. Love to our huge human family.
I grew up in the tidewater Virginia peninsula area, very near Williamsburg where Bruce Hornsby lived(s). Not only is Bruce a very successful and talented singer/songwriter he is an awesome human being as well. He is very well liked among other musicians and has collaborated with many top tier talents. When asked how he felt about his song being sampled, he said that the message in the song was still (unfortunately ) relevant and that not only would it reach a larger audience through Tupac’s music, but it would also renew interest in his music.
"That's just the way it is" is the line people actually used in years past when their bigotry was pointed out to them and they tried to pass it off. "Don't blame me. That's just the way it is." Hornsby in his time and place probably heard people say it.
Great breakdown, as always. If I can add to the perspective of 'that's just the way it its', I think it also suggests the reality that bad people will always exist, and to not let them have an influence. There has been, is and almost always will be racist people, a racist mindset..... and to not make it all about race....but just naysayers and negative people in general who love nothing more than to suggest to anyone what they are and are not capable of. It's a sickness, and is around in all walks of life. You carry a lot of wisdom, happy to support your channel. I'm glad I found it.
I can still recall hearing this song for the very first time when I woke up one summer morning to it playing on my radio alarm clock. I instantly loved it and the plan for the day was to spend the day at the beach and just have fun and. This song and that day are forever ingrained in my memory and it feels so good every time I hear it still. Thanks JMBOY!🤘
*Tupac...🐐 RIP 😔. I believe that they became friends afterwards and jmo; it *PROVES* that Music 🎵🎶 has *NO LIMITS/BOUNDARIES!!!* Nice reaction man 👍🙂, 1st time viewer.
Record labels don't play that loose with copyright. Bruce has said in an interview that he's happy with the royalties he's getting from Tupac's version.
Loved your well thought out reaction, but more than that, i loved that you didn't constantly interrupt the song. Speaking as someone from a poor background i agree with you about making changes and moving forward. SUBSCRIBED.
I want to offer several recommendations: -Richard& Linda Thompson: The Dimming of the Day (grab it off the Ya-Ya Sisterhood soundtrack) -This Mortal Coil: Song of the Siren -My Morning Jacket: Circuital, Dondante, Touch Me, Only Memories Remain, I Will Sing You SoNGC-try to find live versions -Traffic-Low Spark, Dear Mr Fantasy, Rock&Roll Stew, Feelin’ Alright -Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac: Albatross, Black Magic Woman, Green Manalishi -David Essex: Rick On (find version with Essex singing in a small bar, in the middle of the room-his dancing will shock at first, then it will become too cool) Thanks! Great reaction channel.
Bruce Hornsby wanted people to notice the depths of life and how people fight to get back to living We all wanna live again Get a job My dad used to yell that out to people as a joke, (As we were poor too) Funny as kids, but I'm an adult That's just the way
Elton John and Billy Joel are great piano players. Bruce Hornsby raises the bar. Try Bruce's song "The Show Goes On," some of the best piano playing you will ever hear.
One of my favorites! The music is so soothing. The lyrics are so moving. I would really love to see you react to Nicotine Dolls - What Makes you Sad. Their songs are so well written and moving.
I didn't realize Tupac sampled this song so I checked it out. I think bruce Hornsby's version is more hopeful and Tupac 's is more realistic. I don't think it's a sampled version but an update based on the passage of time. You should play changes so old timers like me can compare.
still lingers and, the line, "Thats just the way it is", isnt some vacant that was then statement, because, even if we dont believe it, thats just the way it is-still. As you mentioned, the the political and personal action by those that dont want change, is powerful. And it just wont go away with laws (especially when the court can be changed in a heartbeat) or good intentions. Everyone must take extraordinary actions in stepping up, on the lowest social level-the everyday stuff.
@@rubrokenThe artist who is sampling owes the artist who wrote the song money for using his intellectual/creative property. Some don’t pay and end up in protracted court cases that the user eventually loses.
@@rubroken I call BS. Every artist is inspired by songs created by others. But being "inspired by" is not the same as simply lifting the actual track and rapping over it.

music will always mean something regardless of which generation is making it.
Saw him in concert a couple of years ago. Just him, a piano, and one spotlight. All I can say is that guy can play the piano.

Now do Tupac’s “Changes” which is his remix
He’s quite the pianist! Such a timely song! Good pick!
