“They passed a law in ‘64 to give those who ain’t got a little more, but it only goes so far.” What an incredibly powerful and important lyric.
Dude! Ive watched a lot of reactors, much less now than i used to but youre one of the few i still watch and thats for a reason: Youre one of the most eloquent, insightful, well-read reactors ive ever seen. You have the most basic, budget setup and yet you consistently produce actual content of the highest quality. Ive touched on this briefly before but you just keep on doing it over and over.
I agree! And I consider myself a bit of a reactor connoisseur! 😂 I have a background in music and the 80s/90s music industry, so I find it fascinating to see the younger generations react to this music. At the same time, I’ve discovered some great newer bands like Nothing But Thieves, Muse, Betcha and more.
Completely agree. I’ve said this before, but I never thought my favorite reactor would be some shirtless dude, half my age, with an infectious smile and positive attitude. But, here I am. His insights are a breath of fresh air to this slightly curmudgeonly, middle aged, sarcastic guy.
I saw Bruce in concert last year. He introduced this song by saying “This next song was also a big hit for Tupac Shakur” 😂 perfect
Listen to his “Mandolin Rain”. ❤
That’s a great song
I throw this song at reactors a lot!! There's so many songs out there that were sampled by rappers! I love seeing the recognition on people's faces when they realize!! Love it!! ❤️
I remember when this came out. Gave me chills and still does to this day. Kind of song that changes you.
Bruce Hornsby grew up in the South, so he had first-hand knowledge/experience of what he was singing about. I also feel it was brilliant of Tupac to sample this and bring it to a new generation.
Thanks for reacting to this amazing song Shon!
Playing this on the piano was one of my goals when starting to learn. It was a fantastic day when I finally nailed it.
“Mandolin Rain” next like others have said. It’s also 🔥
Hornsby was from Virginia. He wrote a lot about racism in the south in a thoughtful - not preachy- manner. And he’s an absolutely amazing pianist. More of Bruce please.
I love when that riff hits and the reactor gets that look. This was great.
The same thing happens when some reactors hear "Kid Charlamagne ".
My mom used to tell me stories of when I was a little kid they had drinking fountains for whites and another for "colored."
I'm 65 now and things have changed somewhat but we still have a way to go. The best line in this songs says, "but don't
you believe them." This song is as perfect as a song gets. The lyrics are spitting truth but that piano is incredible! One of
my all time favorites. Great reaction as usual Shon.
A classic...can you imagine if Bruce and Tupac got to collab and perform this together :)
Bruce did a very nice thing.
When the Grateful Dead lost our beloved Brent Mydland (the Deads 3rd keyboardist to pass), Bruce joined the band to get us through.
Bruce Hornsby collaborated with Don Henley on The End of Innocence. Bruce wrote the music and played on the record. Don Henley wrote the lyrics and sang.

The lyrics of "The Color Bar" is stating they are prejudiced on Black Americans. Bruce was standing up & saying that is Not Cool...
As a trained piano player, Bruce’s claw hands fascinate me. 💜💜💜
Me too. The one finger tap is something I wish I knew.
Have seen him play live many times. He is truly amazing. The way he uses syncopation and the piano as both a melodic and a percussion instrument just blows me away. Sometimes he makes you feel like there are actually 4 hands playing, rather than two. Not to mention he has a great voice, as well, and plays many genres even within a single show.
I love this song. He can really play the piano and is such a good singer. Great reaction
You should listen to Bonnie Raitt featuring Bruce Hornsby.. I can’t make you love me. His piano mastery and Bonnie’s iconic voice is fire 🔥… great reactions!! 👍👍👍👍👍
Definitely fire
its funny watching everyone realizing It was Tupac Shakur who actually used this song for his own.
Yes but also makes me feel ancient LOL
This was a huge, huge hit, all over MTV in the late 80s. I wouldn't be surprised if Tupac saw it on MTV for the first time, like the rest of us.
Love this song, the melody, the lyrics, the piano - its almost perfect...
great song!
Tupac was incredibly well rounded in his music choices!
Bruce Hornsby plays piano on the Bonnie Raitt song “I can’t make you love me”. It’s one of her best and I think you would enjoy it.
I don't think that Bruce gets the *"due respect"* for being a badass piano player 🎹🎶🎵 vs Phil Collins, Billy Joel etc...
@@seanpatton7406 I agree 👍
It's wild to think of Tupac chilling listening to this song so much that it inspired him to write changes.
So glad you paid attention to that lyric
Best part about seeing how you react to this song, and others, is-back in the day, these songs were just in regular rotation on radio stations, these weren't special events, this was just the music of the time.
It was exciting knowing 4 or 5 songs of this depth and quality would be released each year. We didn't realize what we had.
You're a perceptive guy, you see through all the floss, glitz and all the other bs and get right down to the musical content which is why I'm here. I'm a subsciber now.
Bruce Hornsby makes the most lush sounding piano. He plays a guest role (piano) on Bonnie Raitt’s masterpiece, “I can’t make you love me”. I think you’d dig it. Great reaction, per usual…love your good vibes and breakdowns of songs. You’re always on the money in your analysis.
Love this song.
It is about time that you reacted to this iconic masterpiece 🖤🖤🖤
Absolutely have loved this band and Bruce Hornsby ever since they first came out
on the 🎶 🎵 scene!!!
I like your work and attitude and hope some of the negative comments on this one do not get to you personally. It takes big balls or a complete lack of sensitivity to come onto a gifted young black man’s channel and complain about rappers. You have bent over backwards to immerse yourself in popular music performed by bands long before you were born. I appreciate that a great deal, young man.
The difference between "Changes" and "The Way It Is" by Bruce is his positive message. You'll notice after he sings "that's just the way it is" he sings "oh don't you believe it". He believed things could change!
This reactor is the first one I’ve watched that caught that!
Fantastic song. The most important line is "Dont you believe them." Saying Don't believe those that say things will never change. You have to believe in change, for change to happen. You obviously also have to work for it, probably fight for it, but change can happen. Love the song, and your reactions.
Also, I hope you do Mandolin Rain as well, if you have not already, as it is another amazing song.
Loved your face…”Wait a minute, wait a minute!” Great reaction.
When you watch Bruce play you can really understand the saying "tickling the ivories"!
Changes by Tupac, yep u got it!!!!!
I really enjoy watching folks discovering the original.
Every time I tap on your new reactions I CAN'T BELIEVE how HANDSOME U R!! Gorgeous!!! Love the reactions too!! Love your opening line .....Let's DO IT!!! Thank u
I love the stank face you had during the piano 🎹 solo!! Keep up the good work!!
My FAVORITE reaction from you. Truly.
Mike +The Mechanics-Taken in
Bruce Hornsby still tours, former coworker of mine saw him last year and said he was great
Bruce Hornsby and Ricky Skaggs to a fantastic version "The Way It Is" in a bluegrass style.
Bruce Hornsby is a gifted, gifted pianist. Sings with Southern Country Soul. He's literally a musical genius. Dogged by personal issues in the '90s but this Album Hit Big with American audiences. All over radio af the time.
This one never gets old
Bruce sat in on piano with The Grateful Dead for a few tours in the early 90’s check out some of those live videos Eyes Of The World is a great one.
Such a great song 🎶 a lot of truth and a lot of hope! Ah but don’t you believe it! The world is getting better believe that and it will happen! love and peace ✌🏻
I absolutely enjoy your reactions Shon. You have such a real take on meanings. You just keep on keeping on.
SUBSCRIBED! I love love love your style. Great reaction and you can tell your pay attention and are completely authentic. Instant fan here!
Shon, much love and support. 🎶🎤🇺🇲
Love me some Bruce Hornsby
bruce hornsby across the river is another great one
Great reaction.I love both songs.
Classic song
Loved your reaction! Thank you for this one.
Another one of his songs I think you would like is Mandolin Rain.
Great reaction. When you do listen to the Tupac version again just realize that taking the phrase "But don't you believe them" out of the song, completely changes it.
Nice observation in regards to “buying a job’ 😳 i never caught that !
Love Bruce. 🔥🔥🔥
Inside info... dude was a good hoops player... used to show up at our pick- up games in college... cool guy, actually
There are 2 sides to a sample from one genre to another. 1 is admiration for the piece and 2 they are lazy and want to use it as a springboard on an idea. Take that how you will. 😂😂😂
Great reaction man !
Mandolin rain is a must listen
Almost all hip hop songs in the first 20 to 30 years of hip hop sampled other songs. Its a foundation of hip hop music.
Great reaction dude🤘
❤❤❤ yup! You got it! Tupac sampled this song for "Changes" ❤❤❤
LOVE seeing reactions to this from people who heard the Tupac joint first!!! So cool...
Always got such joy mixed with soothing sounds with this one…superb.
Give Show goes on a listen as well
checkin in ...
They say Tupac “sampled” this, I think it’s more of a cover
Nice reaction, I liked it.
Hello shon! I would love to see your reaction to “Forbidden City” by Marty Friedman! It’s a songs with no vocals, various transitions and tempos changes. Marty is a very melodic guitarist! I think you will love it.
I'd like to hear a remix of this with some rage against the machine
In the 80s and 90s we called it stealing, not sampling. He didn’t get permission to use Hornsby’s composition but Hornsby did endorse the usage after hearing Tupac’s song.
So true.
Sounds like straight up thievery to me.
✌🏼😎🇺🇸
I still consider it stealing
@@KaylaYeager-mz5sd Yes, me too.
@@jeffstevens4262 good for you, thanks for letting us know.
Incredible musician, which if I’m not mistaken, was classically trained at the Juilliard School Of Music. ✌🏼😎🇺🇸
Berklee.
@@VatnykSlayer_fella I stand corrected. ✌🏼😎
Love it
you're always amazingly fun to watch! Have you reacted to Come and get your love, by Redbone? Their performance on Midnight Special in like...sheesh 1973 or so was amazing! Have a great day!
Great tune 👍
You do a great job, I appreciate your thoughtful comments.
Sampling sounds so nice. Do Rappers and Hip Hop performers know how to write a melody? They certainly do a lot of “sampling”. (I call them performers. I can’t call them musicians)
You cover some great tracks and I love your reaction and views 👍I was fortunate enough to be in my youth in the 80s and grew with these tracks ❤
Tupac said it was one of his favorite songs.
🇨🇦
Yes, Tupac sampled this. This was the original.
Bruce played keys with The Dead for several years..
👍🎶
ost a jazz-rock. Hornsby is special. // try Marc Cohen..walking in Memphis.
Hey hello. About 1-2 months ago I started watching reaction videos of artists I like. I've often ended up on your channel. Well, I noticed that hardly anyone reacts to one of the greatest music legends of all time. Isn't Adriano Celentano known in the USA? You have a lot of Italian immigrants! I'm pretty sure that every Italian in the world knows Ardiano Celentao's song: "Il Ragazzo della via gluck" by heart, like about 70-80% of all southern and central Europeans. He was not only an outstanding musician and songwriter, but also a celebrated film star. It's probably no exaggeration to say that Adriano Celentano has the same status in Italy as Elvis in the USA. Just like Elvis, there are Adriano Celentano doubles in Italy. I find it just as strange that there is no reaction to L'italiano by Toto Cutugno, who wrote something like the unofficial national anthem of Italy with this song. The two have millions of views on UA-cam but no reaction! Why? Best wishes from Switzerland
Check out "Indian Sunset" by Elton John. It's another one sampled by Tupac, and is completely amazing and heartrending all on its own.
Am I the only one, that when all the reactors talk about Tupac’s version, say “Never heard it”?
yea...hilarious...how people thought tupac made this beat.......but he did rewrite the lyrics
“Well they passed a law in ‘64 to give those who ain’t got a little more…”, referring to the Civil Rights Act. And as the rest of the line explains, it doesn’t quite work as intended.
The lyrics of this song are magnificent, rivaled only by the magnificence of the piano.
As somebody that have only heard this version and not the Tupac one, I had almost the same reaction when I found out "Tupac sampled this?" 🤣🤣
Is amusing to see reactors wait-a-minute/hold-on face.
Personally i see it as the highest compliment when someone samples/steals from an older song.
This is a classic that I was actually alive for when it was new. It was an impactful song and a hit, but didnt really gain the long term following that usually goes with such a serious and high quality song.
"That's just the way it is" is what people would say when you put them on the spot about continuing in the same old segregated ways that they knew were wrong. They just pretended it wasn't their choice..."that's just the way it is," they'd say.
