For me, it is about augmenting my miniatures with parts that GW neither has the time nor inclination to release themselves. being able to get different heads or custom shoulder pauldrons for my homebrew Chapter, or being able to outfit my Homebrew Guard regiment with a different pattern lasgun and aesthetic to the ubiquitous Cadians is such a Bonus. I have no interest in 'Destroying GW\ or 'Sticking it to the man'. I am merely interested in creating the custom army/unit/characters that I want. I lack the skill with greenstuff so I am happy to purchased STL's from talented creators making awesome models and/or parts.

GW uses chinese recasters to produce their models, and have been for the better part of 2 years.
I really hope you picked those minis out of the bin after your video.
I also kind of find the whole "GW needs to protect their IP" excuse ridiculous.
Just to name a few outright ripoffs
    -Starship Troopers
    -Aliens
    -Star Wars
    -Mech Warrior/Battletech
    -Dune
    -Rambo
    -Predator
    -The Regiment
    -Black Adder
    -Lord of the Rings
    -Edgar Allen Poe
    -HP Lovecraft
    -John W. Campbell
And these are just the ones of the top of my head. Warhammer 40k isn't an IP, it's about 500 IP's shoved into a blender and set to juice.
Oh I see, it's an "inspiration" when GW does it, but it's IP theft when a 16 year old with blender and a 3D printer does it.

I am struggling with my photon ultra. With the craftsman resin the supports keep failing on my pre supported onepagerules prints. I even kicked exposure time up to 4 seconds and lubricated the FEP.
Right now I think that the pre supported files are not strong enough without the light scatter from lcd printers.
I noticed you print some onepagerules minis. Do you have to support them yourself or edit the supports in any way for DLP printing?
Not sure what I am doing wrong. Any advice would be very helpful.

    • @FauxHammer
      @FauxHammer  Рік тому

First question, are you using “Craftsman resin” or “DLP craftsman resin”.
If you are exposing at 4 seconds, that would make DLP craftsman resin super brittle. I’m at 1.6 seconds per layer.
Are you shaking your resin? Before use.
What is the temperature of the room you’re printing in?

If not, do you have a printed/painted part with those settings, are the lines still that visible?

In a way, it reminds me of bands in the 60s and 70s trying to deal with bootleg albums of their music. Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd in particular struggled endlessly to "clamp down" on the side businesses.
The Grateful Dead took a novel (and exactly opposite) approach. They invited concert attendees to bring their own tape recorders, and had a designated area to record the shows. Their fans went all in, and everybody won. I think GW could learn a lesson from them.

Would I use my 3D printer to print an army? Nope.
Will I use them to print bits (custom shoulder pads I'm looking at you!!!), terrain, busts and such hell ye!
Would I print a 120+mm Space Warrior for the giggles and to see how it is to paint it, yeah maybe one.
As for the old tiresome "XXX Will kill GW", no, 3d Printing won't do that. Just as home made terrain haven't killed GW. People still buy GW terrain kits.
It's like when music casettes came out, the industry said they'd kill music. VHS tapes would kill movies, MP3's... Yeah you get the point I'm making. :) But despite all of the progress technology has made, movies are still being made (although most are crap), artists produce and sell their music and there is still a retail market.
Is GW expensive. Yeah, sure. But it's always been an expensive hobby.
Will 3D printing one day pose a threat to miniature games. Yes! But, that day is still very far away. You still have to deal with highly toxic materials and fumes. Not to mention, you have to know how to support your models (yes, there are pre'supported ones, but, they won't work for all printers), etc. So until there is a time when 3D printing is as easy as changing a CD in the player, then no, there's no real threat to miniature producers like GW, Corvus Belli or Privateer Press.
I mean ffs, most people can't even use a FDM printer...

The Anycubic Photon Ultra has worse resolution than most of the current mono screen printers - so that's something to keep in mind. I always see people say, " oh I wouldn't print a whole army" and I scoff at that - of course people will print a whole army. I've printed 4 myself already, and the quality is great. I use a 2k machine, and results would be even better using a 4k machine. If I took my Necron models to a GW store, most people wouldn't even know they are printed.
A lot of the issues you mention, like lines and support markings, can all be lessened (or even eliminated) with printer setting, orientation and/or post processing methods. Its just a matter of getting it set right and getting a lot of practice.
I could rant about GW prices and practices, but really what it comes to is that 3D printing has opened up the game to me in a massive way - Back when i played WH Fantasy, I had a single army that never changed because I just couldn't afford all of the cool models I really wanted. I never got to have the army of my dreams - 3D printing has turned that around completely. I can print whatever I want, for whatever army I want, in any quantity I want.
The biggest drawback to 3d printing is that the technology is changing so fast, and there is so much saturation in the 3d printer market. Too many choices, too many considerations, and most people generally just want to make it simple. It becomes a hobby in itself, which a lot of people may not be into - but to each their own. In my view, making/printing your own models just adds another level to my Warhammer hobby and allows me to be that much more engaged with it.

    • @FauxHammer

fair enough, to each their own. I don't think resolution between a DLP and LCD printer is a fair comparison as I'm abvle to get much sharper prints on this than any other printer I own.
      Compare results, not specs

If I took my models to a store.. most would not know I printed them either and I am using an Ultra. Resolution is not something you should be comparing with DLP to an LCD, it is the results! The results are that the Ultra is one hell of a good printer and worth every penny!

At first I wanted to print clones but over time I realised that the orginal "inspired by" designs were far better quality and looked better. At the end of the day, GW's whole IP is "inspired by" so I honestly see no problem with models that are clearly meant as proxies for specific things.

The day im waiting for is when games workshop start selling miniatures that are allready painted..im aware the painting is part of the hobby. But ive got many many boxes of miniatures that i cant play with as i dont have the time or sometimes the inspiration to paint them. So ready painted ultra marines for example would save alot of time of which i can use to play the actual game, also you could paint over it if you want to make some changes to them..i understand it would be hard to do but not impossible and the price would be a little high but i would buy 50% of my army already painted and ill do the rest myself..i mean its not like we dont have the technology..Anyone agree with me..

You basically hit the nail on the head. 3d printing is great for bitz and smaller parts for customizations, but printing an entire army is not something that most people would get into and I find it laughable that a lot of people who own a 3d printer proclaims the death of games workshop. The truth is that a lot of people don't want to get into a whole new skillset that puts an additional barrier between them and their hobby. When I want to start a new army it's enough work for me to build and paint them. I don't want to have to print them as well. My time is limited and I gladly pay for the privilege to have these models without any layer lines and without having to through the additional hassle of printing them.

But for people that have the time, interest and funds to learn something new, they can print themselves a new army and much more. Not really a hard concept. Just like if you were to learn another paint technique like dry brushing. Still have to find time to experiment with the process before you can paint your army. A lot of people put up their print settings so you dont have to "learn" by trial and error.

Considering anyone can buy a printer these days and print off a 2000 point army with a bottle or two of resin, I'd say the threat to GW is real. ITC has shown us that when rules are neglected the community will come in and make better ones, sorry to say but their business model is irrelevant as is their IP. The more silly decisions and price hikes they make, the more of their consumers they push away or towards alternatives like 3d or recasts

    • @Himle_
      @Himle_ 2 роки тому +4

Can some people print their own armies? Yeah sure. Can the majority? Or more importantly, is the majority interested? Nope
Ofc 3D printing will impact any miniature manufacturer. Be it GW, Privateer Press, WoTC or Corvus Belli to name some. But just as music wasn't killed with the launch of casettes or mp3's (despite all the whining from the music industry), not will miniature manufacturers die because of 3D printing.
imho, 3D printing (especially resin) is still way to hard and hazardeous for most people to even try.
