Thank you so much. We didn't have that wedge but something similar and got in. My sister is literally queen of locking keys in cars so now she knows what to do rather then having to pay $50+ dollars each time. She won't use a hide a key so this is the next best thing.

This method works. I had locked my keys in when camping and we ended up using a hatchet as a wedge and a metal stick for roasting Hot Dogs over the fire to pop the switch.
It’s amazing how much flex a vehicle door has, and it still springs back.

Thanks a lot!! Robert Holcomb and team. I had an emergency situation at my home today. Our 4 month old kitten had somehow got into our neighbors Ford Ikon car and the neighbors are away for 2 days (it was inside the car since noon...was very ill) . My wife and kid were panicking and deeply concerned. i couldn't reach our neighbor for permission to break the glass, Luckily i watched your video, prepared a hook using a cloths hanger, used a chisel i had at home as wedge. After about 15 mins of trying, i was able to open the door..thanks a lot again..cheers:)

Fantastic tip!! Many thanks.Just got into my 2004 Ford mondeo this way.Bent the top back edge of the drivers door back & opened the same door from the inside with the bent hook rod .Took about half an hour.Fortunately I had a 4ft length of 3mm dia wire rod handy. Not sure an opened up coat hanger would be long enough.

I was thinking just that. You don't carry a wedge around with you all the time.
Some cars won't let you lock the door with the keys inside, while other cars don't care. That is why I keep a door key in my billfold.

    • @neildoerdan2298

Don't worry, just carry an Axe or Knife around on you at all times and you can make a wedge and long rod out of a nearby tree or window frame.

I drive an American car (Chevrolet Corsica 1991)
Even the local car dealer specialized in American Cars had the hardest time opening the door when I locked the keys in. Took him an hour to open it. I came, used a small rod to push the door open, took me 10 minutes :D

That's an awesome tip. I'll go out and get some of these, and keep it in my trunk so I can wait for the locksmith to unlock my car, because I have no where else to store this aside from in my trunk. Which will be useless if I lock the keys in my car. This is more of a tip for "What to do if you're at home, and you lock your keys in your car."

We did this using a wire coat hanger but we wedged from the top of the window close to the lock as possible. We did this back in the late 80s. Sometimes you can slide the window down with your hands just enough to get the wire in but that can be challenging.

+Karen Mitchell It must be, I have seen where thieves have broke a window out to get in a truck that was left unlocked because it had nothing in it anyways and they not only broke the window to get in a unlocked truck, the broke the dash trim to steal a factor GM radio that wasn't nothing fancy.

Deborah Frenette I used to know a guy that would steal cars (mostly newer trucks like F-250's and F350's) and Im pretty sure he didn't carry the keys around for them, he would steal a car, have to park it somewhere because he saw another car he needed to steal I wish the fools who have busted out a window on my car the two times it's been broke into thought the same thing you do. Cars get stolen all the time, and not just good ones, theres different ways for different cars, I'v busted the ign switch on a ford escort just using the tire iron that was in the car. Also tow truck drivers seem to like to put the seat belt through the steering wheel to keep the wheels from turning if its a RWD

The advice works best on trucks and old cars, and only when the car's battery isn't dead.
To stash a key outside a 21st century CAR, you'll need to get a key made without a programmed chip for ~$30.
The best place to stash a passive key blank is behind a license plate that requires a screwdriver to access it.
For someone who does this often, the most convenient place is the same as with dog tags- on a beaded chain worn like a necklace.
The worst place is in a magnetic holder . There are very few locations under a modern car that you can reach without crawling under it that arent blocked by a plastic shroud, and all of them are known to car thieves. A programmed key would enable a thief to steal your car using that key.
The second, worst stash location is inside a wallet or purse. You are just as likely to lock those in a car as to forget the keys.

My car wouldn't start yesterday, so my Mom had to drive me to work and pick me up after work. When I was at work, my sister took the car battery out of my car and was charging it elsewhere and she locked my car. I drive a car that only has one keyhole on the driver's side. The only ways you can get into my car is by the power lock on my keychains or the manual way. The problem is that some time ago someone tried to break into my car and messed up the keyhole to my car. It's still jammed. I will eventually have to pay to get that keyhole replaced.
Anyways, my sister, Dad, and I were watching your video and similar videos last night and today. My Dad called a locksmith, who showed up today, on New Year's Day, and he basically did the wedging the door open and using Lon apparatus to physically unlock a car door. The unlocking service cost $40. And then my sister was able to put in recharged car battery, and my car finally was able to start up. This is the second time in recent months that my car wouldn't start in cold weather. Eventually, I'll have to get a new car battery as well. Anyways, this video and similar videos are helpful for people who have dealt with car doors being locked with no way of getting except through the tips shown in the video. Thanks for the video, and have a good 2015!

The best thing to do if you have a newer car there is an emergency key in the key fob.
Go to the locksmith and have one made and stick it in your wallet.
I would like to see a belt such as a money belt with a zipper to put things like extra money or a spare key.
I would be Leary of those magnetic key boxes they say you can place under the car. If you go over rough roads it could jostle off.

OMG I lock my dog and cell phone in my car when I was traveling in AZ one winter and before the sun came up I had to bust out the small window in the backseat and it ended up being the most expensive that I could have busted out in my SUV but my dad got me a key that I can only use for the door if I stick it in to start the car I will mess it up. but the problem us it's all plastic car and can't stick it anywhere on my car I trust not to loose so when I travel with my dog I wear it always around my neck. That was an expensive trip to my dad's but I learned my lesson. Never travel with a dog without a spare key on the outside of it car or in your body.We live and learn thanks for that info but I hope I never have to use but who knows I mite come across someone else with the same problem I had and maybe I be their hero with that info u just told me. thanks it's always good to know how to get into your own car without being costly.

An FYI ... A Wallet and the car's own antenna (same method) . Most people don't keep the wedge and pole in their back pockets, lol. Pull antenna and let it rock back and forth, the vibrations will usually let you back antenna out without a wrench, shhhh. And Look up shoe string method, even easier, as long as locks aren't pin style. (someone good with the slipknot can still get them, :)

I've used sticks/branches off a tree before on a Subaru. Cars with frame-less windows are obviously much easier than ones shown here. Just takes a little patience.

Good Video - Although what are the chances you'd have access to a wedge and steel rod?
Maybe upload same video but one more practical - how to unlock the door with a coat-hanger - more readily available I think

share this with your friends and fam and tell them to watch it to save big money very easily. tow truckers in Canada charge $75+ with tax to do this - with ZERO justification of costs. BIG SCAMMERS HUGE RIP OFF. HELP BRING AN END TO THIS INJUSTICE.

Good way to scratch the paint and tear weatherstripping if you're not careful. Some cars are easier than others. This method should be used sparingly. A competent locksmith will pick the lock or use other less risky ways to open a vehicle without damage. That's what you're paying them for, to make sure your vehicle is NOT damaged.

    • @luisgomez8635
      @luisgomez8635 2 роки тому

If you have to remind yourself to use this method sparingly, you should just hand your keys over to someone else because you're an idiot who can't stop locking your keys in your car

Naturally, this method works well, however it is not natural to be carrying around a wedge and a steel rod. However you can carry one with you for someone else who you might run across who has locked their keys in the car. I have a slimjim that can still luck out and work in some cars in my trunk, I might need to update to these, however that never helps me.
