Galaxy S23 Ultra CAN HURT YOUR EYES

- The Galaxy S23 Ultra is the best Android smartphone. At least we used to think so. By all indications, Samsung's flagship smartphone has all the best: design, processor, cameras and screen... Or we were wrong all along.
In 2019, users on Samsung's official forum began asking the company why the screens of their favorite smartphones hurt their eyes and sometimes cause headaches.
How is it that the best screen on the market is also the worst screen among all smartphones? Let's find out.
Thank you for explaining this in such great detail! I haven’t been able to use any smartphone with an OLED display because of PWM. Not only do I get eye pain and headaches but also terribly dizzy. My current and only smartphone that I can use is the iPhone SE since it has an LCD display.
try Honor phones...they are mostly LCD and full screen as well..am usin Honor 50Lite as these shitty OLED screens hurt the f'attame

@@lprashanthi7298 did u try S24?
@@lprashanthi7298u are right. i return s23 for this shit PWM and too bright screen
Bright, vivid colors can be a strain on the eyes. On iPhone: First set the phone's brightness to 100% (to compensate for the next step which make it darker), Then go to Settings, Accessibility, Display. Set the Reduce whitepoint setting to a high value. This reduces the intensity of bright colors. Myself I use 95%. If you find it too dark you need to use a lower value than 95 %. This brings brightness back.
Bit of an error around 3:16, but it doesn't change the main point of the video at all. The frequency doesn't change when you dim down with PWM; the pulse width does (hence the name, Pulse Width Modulation). The frequency is constant. Basically, at 100% brightness the screen is always at max brightness, but at lower values, it rapidly switches between max brightness and a lower value (possibly even having it entirely off). The lower the brightness, the longer the screen stays at the lower brightness every cycle. So it might be 50% on/50% off at a mid brightness, and 10% on/90% off at a low brightness setting. A lower pulse width is generally more annoying than a higher one.
is there any of the new Samsung models where this issue wont happen?
I wanted to get a Samsung S23 but Im not sure anymore now.. what about the S22 ?
I tried recording from another phone but I couldn't see the flickering. My eyes would only hurt if I would play mobile games for about 18 hrs without rest - not limited to S23. So I didn't get it why my teammate (iphone user) asked me if my eyes don't hurt yet one time that he had to stop playing when we only played about 3 hrs. Perhaps it depends on different person and the best way out of it is to give your eyes rest. I think it's not only on S23 Ultra or smartphones.
Dude thank you so much for covering this topic. I have the same nokia for years bc i cant update to a new phone. Hopefully they'll make changes soon. Have you found anything new that works?
I have an s23 ultra... and my computer monitor is a huge oled.. i can stare at my monitor all day no issues. I check something on my phone for 5 minutes and suddenly i cant read anything on my monitor for a couple minutes..
Does your do anything with eye strain . Still using s23 ultrab
@@MbSbAquaGamer I also use the Ultra but the symtoms never went away. I just use my phone much less now, an planning to buy the Xiaomi 14 which has DC dimming
Computer monitor and tv using OLED once again are not flicker free..rtings said it'll flicker at refresh rate which is slight dim in brightness every couple milliseconds.
I understand that OnePlus dropped DC dimming some time ago and also just use PWM now too sadly.
My phone were a Redmi Note 10 5G. I used lot of IPS LCD display on any phone (Nokia 3 2017, iPhone 5, Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 inches tablet and actual Redmi Note 10 5G). I prefer LCD display to AMOLED or OLED, except if it's 90 or 120 Hz.
It is not only PWM. I find that I get problems with screens (both phone and computer) when the colors are too vivid and exaggerated. I just found this today and am testing it: From Android Settings, tap Display, and then tap Screen mode. Tap Natural (or Basic). Don't choose Vivid. Also under Settings, Accessibility, Display there may be some setting affecting color. My Android phone is old so can't check it now.
Exactly, Try to watch star wars light saber fights on Oled screen vs ips ( with medium colors )
You will love ips then believe me
TBF that's actually fixable with a video player that support colorspace calibration

I had S 21 ultra and I wanted to change the phone, but I knew about PWM, and I understood why I always felt so bad. And although the desire to buy S 23 was great, I took Nothing phone 2 And what was my surprise when I felt that I had no fatigue in my eyes, because this phone does not have such a large PWM although it has an OLED display.
I have this issue with my Pixel 4a. My next phone will probably be the Xiaomi 13 ultra, because it has an amazingly high PWM, as you said (for Chinese mobile phone brands in general).
yeah, galaxy a7 hurts me so much (not my phone but from a relative) meanwhile Xiaomi and poco are just fine
Even I was a die hard fan of Samsung and already had used 4 Samsung phones in last 8 years . But just 5 months back I got affected with headache dizziness and eye straining even after a few minutes of phone usage. And my doctor suggested me to change the phone . Have you found a solution yet? I wanted to buy it badly but now I am not sure about it anymore ? ☹️
Does the extra dim function takes this problem away?
@@loveistheanswer5924yes the solution is to change phones. Also make sure you are not using dark mode on any applications or internet. The dark background with the white letters cause a lot of strain on the eyes. I have not had issues since I changed to iPhone and I turned off all dark mode apps. My emails was a big one. I have been a Samsung person for years but I had a lot of issues with my eyes where I almost couldn’t work and look at screens.
@@loveistheanswer5924also, the dim screen is the problem. When the screen is low brightness it causes the screen to flicker more that we don’t realize but our eyes feel the stress. Thanks for the explanation. I actually like the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra before until I figured out that it has this major flaw, which is a low frequency PWM dimming and its a BIG problem because not all people are suitable for such phones with displays like this. I have a Xiaomi POCO X3 NFC from 2020, it has an IPS LCD, BUT... it has a 2358Hz High frequency PWM dimming at low brightness levels and I've been using it for years now but haven't experienced migraines or anything. Is it because S23 using Dynamic amoled instead of super amoled (A15, S7)? or because samsung using higher pwm frequency default to reach peak brightness their galaxy s23?
This is so annoying. Expensive phone but it hurts your eyes.
So, would it be better to buy midrange or flagship Xiaomi or OnePlus phones?

*I made a refund for MacBook Pro 16 with M1 max due to THISSS!!!!!*
I have made the Macbook Pro 16 (2021 model) work for my eyes by doing the following: Display refresh rate 47,95 Hz, Created a custom display preset (out of the Internet & Web preset) with RGB colors (decreasing the amount of colors), White point D50 and luminosity 48 (the lowest possible). The screen is then covered with a Targus magnetic privacy screen. This privacy screen makes it a bit darker and matt (and it just feels better for the eyes with this screen). Now my eyes are okay using that screen. I also made another preset with the luminosity 60 when I need it to be brighter and switch between these two. Many people complain about a large number of colors being stressful.
Does it happen on iphone as well ?

PWM at any frequency is incapable of actually damaging your eyes. Whoever said that doesn't know what they're talking about in the slightest. LCD display phones .There arent many but if health is important you can compromise
Dark mode helped, I still returned the device though
Why?
@YazouruAiM two reasons mainly, the first being that the screen is one of the worst for pwm flicker. Secondly, the cameras, after extensive testing there are too many issues, shutter lag, yes this can be improved, however, at the expense of focus. Faces are very often over processed and fake.

What's the point of having a phone that ''in theory'' lasts longer but hurts your eyes?
@@WrexBF
It doesn't hurt your eyes. Or maybe it does _hurt your_ eyes (even thought it really still doesn't hurt your eyes), but it doesn't hurt my eyes. So, I'd take the much prolonged battery life.
Full disclosure: I can run my phone at 120FPS with surface updates being shown (the pink yellow flashing screen) with no issues and only a minor impact on the readability of on-screen content.
Pretty sure most people can't deal with that at all.
Sorry to say this but this so-calles constant power "DC dimming" feature still shows flicker to me. The S23U does use DC dimming over a certain brightness value, but the display flicker can also be caused by swapping the pixel content. Even when forcing low refresh rates (1hz) and max brightness there are dozens of sub-second flickers. This happens on all screen types. LCD displays with LED backlights using DC power for all facets of the display also show this phenomenon. LED lightbulbs with the circuitry to maintain "constant" brightness also flicker despite what is noted. Seriously, just film the surroundings of any synthetically 'well-lit' room at anywhere from 240 to 1,000FPS and watch how the light oscillates between full-bright and a more limited brightness value. Incandescent and fluorescent bulbs are the same way. Sorry that it strikes me as odd that you somehow know it's these new screens giving you headaches when literally >98% of artificial lighting is this way too. Shoot, even gas lighting halogen and sodium lamps and neon signage (as if fluorescent lights don't count as gas lamps) also oscillate brightness in accordance to the AC grid's frequency.
None of that is somehow of any consequence to you though... right? It's all these new screen's fault. There are only a few truely stable DC lighting options... take the LED light on the backs of some phones... yeah, not all because not even all of those operate at full-brightness 100% of the time.
Anyway. This new trend of disliking PWM is a joke experienced by no one.
Literally all OLEDs and most mobile displays were PWM for more than a decade. That is literally tens of billions of phones, never mind PWM being used in every other display type for *FAR LONGER* in all manner of devices big and small after CRT was replaced which itself also flickers noticably (despite the fact that the electron beam updates pixels within a single frame at a far, far faster frequency than modern displays can currently).
Disliking PWM is the new electromagnetic hypersensitivity craze of the mid 90s to early 00s (and is still alive today).
The reality is, for people like me who actually can determine where electrical signals are originating from... this isn't at all a problem or even mildly annoying at all. When the power goes out things get quieter and darker in a way normal humans simply can't understand or ever experience. I can tell you that power outages are freaky and that's coming from a person that has only lived in any major cities for a fairly short period of my life. Mostly I've lived in less urban areas where the effects of the grid are still incredibly obvious to me... but what else would you expect when I can tell if there are powerful electrical storms hundreds of miles away?
PWM is really being used in most displays. It's not an issue coming from someone that can see, hear, and otherwise sense a wider array of electromagnetic, (and probably sonic) frequencies as well as a much higher flicker fusion threshold.
Xiaomi 13 Ultra, Vivo X90 Pro and Honor Magic 5 Pro use great PWM.

The Amoleds are bad. Samsung amoleds cause eyes train
test the s24 ultra as well
Pwm values for
S22U =240hz
iP12 pro = 245hz
Oneplus 9 pro =200hz
Pixel 7 pro =240hz
Nothing phone 1 = 120hz
…….
…+

But s23u in 240hz destroy your eyes 😂
i don't have any eyes strain or issues at all with my Galaxy S23 Ultra
40% doesn't react to this, but what about other 60%...
maybe not now but it might be damaging your eyes and you will find out 10 years from now, who knows...
How long u r using it?
Is the s24 ultra better for the eyes?
Worst , best in market is Oneplus 12
Lg Lcd screens were great .
I hate samsung phones. They have always hurt my eyes. Samsung tablets are the same. Whether Samsung tablet or phone, Samsung devices always cause my eyes to hurt. I don't even think about Samsung phones or devices when I am thinking about buying a phone. There is something about samsung devices that my eyes cant endure.
What?
I did some research, and this guy's video popped up.
ua-cam.com/video/AhGhYIR29vw/v-deo.html
It seems he is very serious about getting this issue addressed. I found different numbers in his comment section, but I also found a lot of very different numbers. But the one thing I noticed was almost 10 to 1 iPhone users complaining about their eyes having problems with the 14 pro max versus Samsung users and the Galaxy S23 Ultra. It was almost 10 to 1 iPhone users suffering from eye strain. 355 comments at the time of checking. And Samsung is not going to give their competition a better display than they put on their own flagship. You do know that Samsung makes iPhone displays.
we need mini-led smartphones with high pwm and some advantages of the Oled screens
NanoLED is still too expensive and power inefficient for mobile use.
It will likely still use PWM to be more energy efficient.
240hz PWM is likely not the problem for these people. Also... some claim the better iPhones also cause this issue or have a worse impact. I think this is an issue of mass psychosis.
This isn't a new solution for OLED displays and yet... only Samsung's last few lines of phones are considered bad. Why is that?
PWM in Samsung mobile displays has been used for over a decade now.
Best video about this topic. So well explained.
I cannot understand how this is legal...in Europe there are tonnes of laws and prohibitions but something like this is not addressed...
On a 1000 euros + phone this is unacceptable.
I used and IPS phone until I purchased the s23u...big mistake.
If i would have known (warning in the box, more youtubers explaining etc) i wouldn't have spent so much money...
Unfortunately i didnt relate my eye issues with the s23u until it was too late, and couldnt return it.
My (partial) solution: pump up the brightness to 60-70% during the day and avoid using the phone at night...and keeping it over 50cm from my eyes while watching.
Battery time obviously affected and not being able to use the phone during afternoon-night....not good.
Cant wait to sell it (at a huge loss) but there you go.
Problem i see is that reviews not mentioning this and only mentioning the 'good things' are affecting peoples eyes...
You might think 'I am fine' but you never know now how this is affecting your eyes....
Lol. I'm pretty sure if this were a real issue, at least a few million users would've reported it over the past 10 years. It has only become an issue because people are now aware they can blame their headaches on something... but many of those people are using displays with much lower flicker rates... so... Is Samsung (and any manufacturer using their displays, including Apple) good or bad? Is this really what is causing your problem, or is it just what you believe is the easiest thing to point your finger at today?
@@VariantAEC hmmmm
@@VariantAECkeep on dreaming mate. It's a real health issue.
@@smitjee
There are now about 14 million more Samsung Galaxy S23 users... how many people have lost their sight since then? Oh, right, no one. This is not a health issue.
👍👍👍
I was so happy to buy the s23 ultra and now I am very sad because of that reason! ☹️
So there is no solution to that? No App that changes that or anything else? 😕
Don't worry if you don't get a headache or eye pain
@@nawafalharti5349yes you should worry. Even if you do not get a headache that does not mean that flickering does not hurt you
5 months using s23 ultra, My eyes always got tired. Now going back to iPhone, no more problem. 😢
Iphone still has the problem , but less of it .

Samsung phones hurt my eyes, i don`t like it, i prefer honor phones it has high PWM.
My Xiaomi POCO X3 NFC has a 2358Hz PWM at low brightness levels... no migraines.
I have same problem ,Does 2160 hz pwm dimming really work
It does, the higher the PWM Frequency, the better your eyes feel because at higher PWM Frequencies, you don't see flickering!@@mahadevgaikwad2785
I recommend the Xiaomi 13t series
What about honor?
@@mnair1225 don't know, I switched from Honor 10 to Xiaomi.
Лучков, ты?
I sell my s23 ultra and buy iphone 14 plus because of thi reason
This is true, my eyes been bothering me on s23 ultra. Sadly Im returning it soon. Back to 14promax 🤷
Poor decision
Lol😂
@@saikenshin45 if there is a dealbreaker for me, it’s the camera. Specially video. I love Samsung but honestly they are not there yet. Yes you could take awesome photos and videos with the right settings but not everyone wants to mess around with Settings to get a simple shot. I’ve used android since the first G one so I think I know what I’m doing and I’ve switched back-and-forth so many times. I actually own both phones and love both of their strengths. I always say that if you place both together, they would make the ultimate phone. However, just as the video says if the screen is bothering you, then just take it back.
@@Lu-G7 nah, I don't think the phone I payed 1200 dollars for will be taken back from two minor inconveniences when both can be easily fixed. Especially for a phone that is extremely limited to what you can do on it compared to the one you originally had
@Ben lol.. I just want a reliable camera. Point and shoot. I have young kids and Sammy just sucks when it comes to point and shoot.
