Yeah I get eyestrain & dry eye using my phone & laptop. Then I have TV backlight turned down very very low...having it up wants to make my retina sizzle. I also use systane complete up to six times a day.
What about people who already done a retina detachment surgery and have silicon oil injected in the eye, is screen time a risk factor increasing the pressure in the eye?
I started in IT 50 years ago.. I passed my driving license medical at aged 65 without glasses - 5 years ago - but certainly very little exposure to screens of any sort before the age of 20 - so maybe that is more significant..
Yeah... So I did surgery, fixed my eyes and in 1 year I already started seen blurry again. Now, about 2 years later, it's getting bad again. What a pointless experience. Well, if anyone out there is thinking about getting surgery while knowing that your lifestyle requires you to stare at a computer all day, just save yourself the time and don't do surgery.
I disagree, if you eye sight is really bad then i do recommend doing it because at some point it's not possible to do it but it's not that bad then yeah, don't do it

Recap by Tammy AI
Some days are blurrier than others! I found that stress and dry eye symptoms affect my vision when looking at screens and that that depends on the day. When I’m less stressed and anxious, the screen is more clear. That’s been my main guess about the seeming fluctuations.
I was told I had 20/20 vision most of my life. Never had issues with my eyes until after I started a job that required me to look at a screen for 8 hours a day. My eyes started to hurt, and things from a far started to look out of focus. Went to test my eyes last week, only to find out I am near sighted with an astigmatism. Now need glasses. Your videos have helped a lot with understanding what everything means. Thank you ❤
I'm just curious, when you were working on that job, how many hours of sunlight did you get on average? Because I've been reading some studies that imply that the lack of sunlight could cause myopia. Sunlight is needed to produce enough of a certain hormone (idk the name) that is needed to stop your eyes from growing.
I started wearing glasses at age 4 and pretty much failed my eye test every year in school. My myopia got progressively worse each year until I was about -12 in the left and -10 in the right. This was back in the 80s and 90s. However, once I was in high school, college, and grad school, things leveled off. I'm 45 now and terrified of retinal issues due to the myopia, but my prescription hasn't changed much in the last 20 to 25 years (aside from starting to need bifocals).
I I’m 34. I have spent a lot of my life in front of tvs and screens. My myopia has always been bad, but I had never experienced eye strain or dry eyes until recently. Until recently, where I felt like my eyesight was declining at a much more noticeable pace. Sometimes, it feels like my eyes become instantly irritated as I try to look at a screen now. Its made it very hard for me to do the things I once loved. I read that having an inaccurate prescription or I corrected vision problems on lenses can contribute to eye strain. I’m a -17 in my left and -13 in the right with varying astigmatism in both. My doctor thinks RGP contacts will give me better vision, but I didn’t ask about eye strain or the dry eye I can’t seem to shake. I don’t have the contacts yet, but I still worry about how irritated my eyes are almost constantly now…
i really did notice when i stare at a screen to long like my left eye get sort of annoyed and when i take off my glasses and just look away from the computer my eyes feel great
I can't look at any type of artificially lit digital display without instantly feeling sharp and lasting pain in my eyes. I developed it slowly around 10 years ago, and I strongly suspect my heavy computer use was the cause for the development of my issues. I can look at indirect artificial light, such as a projector or for example reading something which is lit up with a lamp. I have found no solutions other than to avoid lit digital displays completely. The alternatives I found were to use e-ink displays; Hisense A9 for my phone, Dasung Paperlike for my computer monitor. I also rebuilt an old monitor to a TLCD screen, i.e. I removed the backlight and the back frame, and I use sunlight to light the display up from behind. This is similar to an RLCD screen, only the light comes from behind instead of the front. These alternatives are the only ones I can use in order to not feel pain in my eyes. Whenever I avoid artificially lit screens for a while (perhaps a week or more) it takes longer before my eyes start to hurt when looking at an artificially lit screen. So the sensitivity of my eyes is linked to how exposed I am to artificial direct light. I have seen no research on this, as the condition seems rare. Though, I have met one other person in real life who shares my condition. My sources of information for potential solutions have been from the subreddit Eink and from the forum LEDSTRAIN. I hope this has been of help to anyone with similar problems.
Hey thanks for sharing this! I am sure you are not alone. But I myself still need to learn more about how LED/ OLED/ and other screens really function. I learned a lot in my vision science courses but they never went that deep into screen technology.
Thank you! I have been feeling the same and it’s so difficult to find info on this online!! It’s really annoying because as much as I try to have a lifestyle with little phone use , almost everything requires me to look at the phone constantly, from school chats, work etc… you are the first comment that describes exactly what I’ve been feeling
I have the same problem, to an extent that I don't want to upgrade my car as all latest cars come with a screen. I have switched to e-ink for all my devices (Bigme Hibreak phone, Boox tablet color, Bigme color monitor). The problem started since 2021 when I had to put in extra hours working on my laptop during the Covid lockdown period. After visiting an eye specialist, I was prescribed reading lens and they said it is a common thing once we reach 40. But the reading lens worked only for 2 years and thereafter I couldn't work on a screen for more than 2 hrs. That's when I started researching e-ink and switched all my devices to e-ink. Just so you know I can see distant objects crystal clearly which means my eyes are just fine. Also after I switched to e-ink I can read the text (on eink screen or regular paper print) without my reading lens. This again means the LCD (or backlight screen) is the culprit. Even with the front light turned on (sometimes) on my e-ink devices, I can manage really well (it is almost 95% same as looking at a non-front-light e-ink screen in a well lit room/outdoor). I'm sharing this so it can help others who are having same issue. It is a surprise that this issue is rare (really?). One last word, mentally I'm able to happily let go of all the hi-fi OLEDs of the world in exchange for a strain-free eyes that only my sluggish and boring e-ink devices provide. But on the other hand, I also with they start fitting e-ink screens (or at least provide a choice) in the cars, waiting for an e-ink Macbook (as I'm a Mac user)... cheers!
I’ve had the same for 7 years, I’m forced to work on a computer for work so have to just live with it. I think it’s more common then you think but if it got out the screens damaged eyes that would be terrible for the big tech companies so it will always stay hidden
The trend for vilifying blue light bothers me. I think it's important to manage due to the neurological effects mentioned, but, as far as circadian rhythm, that doesn't mean cutting it out wholesale. It means reducing it and cutting it out toward the evening. During the day, it's better not to block it. People are already often sleep deprived and dependent on caffeine, so having excessive melatonin during the day because they're blocking blue light isn't going to help their energy levels. Also per working up close, this is why I think we need to be more careful with not just screen time but reading time with kids. There's always this push for more reading, and indeed the mental stimulation and intellectual growth that comes with that is important. But I think it needs to be balanced to try and avoid eye related issues. The breaks and outside time mentioned are good examples of this, and something I'll definitely want to keep in mind if/when I end up raising kids of my own.
I'm 52, and have had presbyopia with a mild astigmatism since I was 14. I work in IT. I spend o LOT of time with screens. I have normal-age related prescription changes, but can no longer see as far away as once I did due to the astigmatism. I've worn progressive glasses and sunglasses for 26 years, and bifocals for a dozen years before that. I also spent, and yet spend, a lot of times outdoors hiking, kayaking, and similar.
@@DoctorEyeHealth My mother had her first bifocals at 11, so just like my mother my eyes are. The only deviance I have from her are nascent, yet imperceptible to me, cataracts.
Hello, I wanted to say I’ve really enjoyed your videos. As a gamer who use to spend 5 hours playing video games in one sitting, I do believe it’s possible to damage your eyes looking at screens. I also have an ultra wide monitor which doesn’t help. About 4 month ago I was on vacation and I spent way too much time playing wow and I noticed after that week I was unable to look my monitor without my eyes watering or feeling like they were burning. It wasn’t just that monitor though, it was any screen that was bigger than my phone. Warm compresses did seem to help but only temporarily. I tried every over the counter eye drop I could get my hands on and none of them seemed to make a difference. Gel eye drops perhaps helped slightly, but again it was only temporary relief. Recently I went to see an eye doctor, and I was diagnosed with dry eyes. My doctor prescribed Retasis, hopefully it will help. Because of how my eyes felt I had to give up gaming. With gaming being a huge part of my life it was honestly very depressing.. So I wanted to say thanks for all the videos you’ve made on eye health. Your videos have been been educational and helpful.
I also can't look at any form of LCD/OLED etc screen. So I built my own TLCD screen (monitor without backlight) and I have no eye issues with it. I also use a Dasung E-ink monitor, but you can't game on it as it has a low refresh rate. Also Hisense A9 phone. It's the only phone I can use without eye issues.
Ugh, I can feel your pain a bit. I love gaming too and it's one of my fears that one day my eyes would fail and I would struggle to be able to play games. Bad dry eyes while gaming was the first symptom I ever had of dry eyes (mostly from playing BIoshock 2 online back in the day). Out of curiosity, ever looked into moisture chamber goggles?
@@DoctorEyeHealthi am also a huge gamer that has been struck down with dry eyes. It is awful. Whenever my eyes feel well enough to play, i play, and then they feel bad again. I've struggled to give it up.
@@DoctorEyeHealth If the problem is the distance to the object... how about 'computer glasses'? Essentially, they just add a lens in front of your eyes that allows you to focus on the screen with the eyes almost at infinity. It would be as if you're looking at objects far away, instead of close to you?
Thank you for noticing and giving me that feedback! I have been doing a lot of self-reflection and decided I wanted to do more deep dives into topics. I also value the scientific evidence and want to provide resources for other people who want to read more into it all. Thanks again!
It should be common sense, the human eyes weren’t designed to look directly into light. They’re designed to process reflected light into colors, shade (light and dark), shape and spatial orientation. Direct light over stimulates the eyes and tear ducts drying them out and tiring them. Also, according to the Mayo Clinic, long periods of staring at something at close range can actually change the shape of the eye. The shape of the eye has a lot to do with vision.
All the studies that I've read say that only children have a risk of myopia progression from near work. So I'm surprised to hear you say that this also includes adults. I'll have to read through the sources that you linked in the description.
Hi Dr, I want just to tell you that I am really satisfied with your work. I have never had an experience before about glasses and as well protection for my eye during staring at screens and from sun lights. but now I have a photochromic, AR coated glass. I saw your videos then decided to have what kind of eye glass I need to have as a beginner in order to protect my eyes from lights. I thank you very much. From Ethiopia 👍👍👍🤜🤜🤜
Unfortunately, not one glasses with protection against blue light will not help you (they only block blue light, not flickering). Because the cause of dry eyes and eye pain from a monitor or phone is precisely PWM flickering in 80% . look for a monitor with the lowest PWM. Good luck
Thanks for shedding more light on how our eyes react to screens! I'm having eye strain since a couple of years and am still trying to find a way out of this. Researching back and forth, it seems that there are several factors in newer technology that may cause it (temporal dithering, maybe other things we don't know about). It seems like most people can manage a bit of eye strain, but for some people, it makes screens unbearable. :( I really hope that both hardware and software will become more eye safe in the next couple of years! 🙏
Thanks for mentioning the temporal dithering, I personally don't know too much about it but I know a few companies that manufacture computers are doing a lot of research on it to try and make screens safer for the eyes. Perhaps one day I can collab with some tech channel on it 😃
@@DoctorEyeHealth Temporal dithering is a form of sub pixel flickering to get smoother color gradients, as far as I understood. It's a possible suspect for some people's eyestrain and there's barely any way to turn it off in modern systems which is a bummer. But anyway, it's great to hear that there are tech people out there that are working on solutions for our eyes! A collab would be awesome! :)
I use many eye medications, prescribed by my ophthalmologist, so my question is should I clean my eyes with water every time I use one of the eye medications? Does it affect the efficacy of the product?
Hi! Any chance to do a video about corneal neuropathic pain/corneal neuralgia? Sadly there's not a lot of information about that condition around, raising awareness about it could vastly help patients who are misdiagnosed as severe dry eye for months or even years while being in enormous pain.
Yes It can , too much screen time (in med school) and very little sleep has caused me to develop eye floaters. I took a bunch of vitamins and now it seems like my vitreous has liquified 😢😢😢😢 and I’m only 31 yrs old 😢
@@satyalouis-guepin7692 it’s started during the last week of May … so far it seems like there is much fluid movement in my eyes like I am having to stare through a wet rainy lens all the time. Honestly I feel down about the whole time. I stopped taking all the vitamins now.
@@Akira-jd2zr going to a retina specialist on Friday to find out 😢 I have been juicing a glass of carrots juice daily and it’s been helping 🥕 the movement has slowed and I am also praying immensely to God🙏🏽
@@satyalouis-guepin7692 it’s gotten better in the sense of getting lighter and thinner, they float to the bottom beneath my view most time , also I have noticed that fasting, drinking a tall glass of carrot 🥕 juice and 8 hrs of sleep is helping immensely. I literally had to take time off work to rest and do nothing. I stopped all forms of multivitamins including vitamin c , a , Lutein and xananthine , fish oil, coq 10 and a bunch of others that i started taking because I do desperately wanted to get rid of the floaters I developed. Also adding yoga soon just to try and relax. I saw 2 ophthalmologists and they both said my Retina is fine and come back if I see more floaters or curtain darkness (which I rebuked and prayed against (God forbid). I will go see a retina specialist on Friday.
I did do this video on dark circles, ua-cam.com/video/YXLV7OvB7SE/v-deo.html but there are some minor updates so maybe I can make another video too Either way, hope this video helps!
What a video helpful! Many people report migraines and headaches, eye pain and eyestrain with the screens! Thank you for sharing and keep up the good work.
pwm or Pulse Width Modulation can cases dry eye syndrome in 80% probability .Try measuring the PWM on your screen with a lux meter and also look for the best monitor with the least PWM flicker. There also is dry eye playlist on my channel (hope you find something useful)Good luck with your treatment.
Dr . Allen, I thanks for your work . I am 17 and I have been suffering from dry eye for two years . Now I use almost all treatment methods that you recommended ( Omega-3, good sleep , blinking, physical activity, oil based drops and ointments , warm compresses , glasses against wind ) . I have lost about 40 % of meobian glands. Can I restore my glands ? You actually told a lot of about managing this disease , long term battle. I understand that is life long disease, but are there at least some studies that show that meobian glands can be grow back?
Good information , thanks. Please address the whitish mucus that occurs several times a day, always upon waking from night of sleep. My eye doctor refuses to even acknowledge it when I specifically asked about it.
this is most likely a piece of the mucin layer - this is not very good, then it occurs with dry eye syndrome, which often occurs due to poor quality technology and flickering
That's not necessarily astigmatism. It just means the object is out of focus. You need better glasses. And to answer your question, yes it is common to have astigmatism. Probably 90% of people have some non-zero amount
I have a question. I was playing with my dog when it jumped on me and its teeth touched my aye. My dog didnt bite my aye it just felt like scratch. The other aye see evrything more red. Do i need to see a doctor? Or it will go away after time?
@DoctorEyeHealth Have you seen research on the effects of long term use of VR headsets? I was involved with the development of a VR headset for the video gaming industry around 2000. The market was killed when a major safety rating authority pulled their approval of the game systems. My understanding is the major issue was concern about effects on depth perception after long term use of VR headsets. VR is “stereoscopic” (2 images) and not really 3 dimensional since the focus plane/point is fixed. That is, the eye and brain are not getting the focusing location as a cue for determining distance in a VR headset. There were reports of people playing the VR games for hours, then being unable to mindlessly navigate a step down at a curb. The large arcade chains like Dave & Busters have liability insurance that requires games to carry all appropriate safety ratings. Losing the safety rating killed that particular headset market at that time.
I have been using smartphones for over 10 years, and for the past 2 years, I can no longer look at a smartphone screen. Within a few seconds, I get severe headaches. I and many others have this problem. It can't be that we are imagining these headaches. It only happens when I look at a smartphone or tablet screen. By the way, I don't wear glasses, and my eye doctor said my eyes are healthy.
My left eye has been burning for weeks. Not sure if it’s related to staring at a computer screen for hours at a time. But it all started with my side of my eye hurting so I rinsed it out with water. I even rinsed out the top layer of my eye under my eyelid. I’ve been using PF eye drops everyday since they’ve been helping a little bit.
I do acknowledge that most people’s eyes are not sensitive to flickering, however, there are still many people complaining that they are suffering from side effects caused by the PWM dimming of OLED, especially when it comes to a low frequency of 480 times per second.
For years, my doctor has emphasized participating in outdoor & indoor sports to prevent an increase in prescription. Sometimes, there is a slight chance of improved vision. When doing sports, eyes will focus on objects nearby & from a far distance & continue to work on eye reflexes. I brought my sports goggles to the eye exam. I was informed about some serious sports eye injuries. I started wearing them after seeing other people getting injured & opponents threatening to hit me in the eye. Badminton. I refused to comply with opponents' requests I must wear contact lenses. He said it is unfair my eyes are protected. 🤦 Apparently, good sportsmanship & fair play angers people. I've taken the approach to educate people about eye health & safety. In badminton, people get injured when turning around to see their partner (racket/birdie in the eye) or the opponents is reckless at the net (head shot).
Why do my eyes look tired most of the time. I used to have small eyelids and large eyes few years back. Now I have large eyelids and small eyes which makes me look tired and gloomy. Is this because of too much screen time? How can i get my old energetic eyes back?
probably my eyes do get dry too often but im glad filters for blue light exist, the difference is immediately noticeable between staring for hours at a white page or a yellow/orange-ish one just as glad as my eyesight still preserving it's capabilities without the need of graduated eye glasses
12:00 I know that you do not understand the concept, but early myopia can be prevented, when still at 20/50. It takes great intelligence, objective resolve to do it personally and successfully.
Would you consider examing and possibly explaining the character of Derpy Hooves from "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic". She has an 👁️ condition that results in her 👀 facing different directions. We see in a flashback that she developed this condition while very young, and it progressivly got worst over time. I've always wondered how bad someone with this conditions vision would actually be. Would they be constantly misjudging depth and misreading things, or is it something she could learn to overcome with time and effort?!
Woah! Very cool question. Had to look up Derpy Hooves lol. Eye misalignments are called "strabismus". There are different forms based on how the eyes are aligned and how they move. For derpy, based on the images I saw, it seems like one of her eyes is angled up and to the nose, and the other is more down and to the nose. A person with that type of alignment would either 1) see double all of the time, or 2) suppress one eye and only consciously view out of one dominant eye, unless the dominant eye was covered, then the nondominant eye would un-suppress and start seeing again. Since this character may have developed it as a young child, they probably have learned to suppress one eye, otherwise, it would make it very difficult to function seeing double all the time. A person who is monocular or suppresses one eye may find some depth perception difficult, but most people with only one eye still understand and perceive depth due to environmental cues. Hope this helps! loved this question.
I've been staring at computer screens for near 20yrs now (job related, so I'm in front of them all day long). My problem however, is my near vision is getting worse. My far distance vision is very good.
Always infront of a monitor, yes your eyes get worse in terms of being able to see far away but apart from that i don't think so. Just an hour a day regurarly helps restore my sight but i haven't really lately tested it. But what i did find under 40min a day each week from trying exercise is that it did gradually restore my eyesight to see better for even objects far away. Although i had to stop cause pain.
I've been building and using computers for 27 years, and before that from 1979 I was squinting at a 1.5" B&W CRT Video Camera Viewfinder through one eye! ... My prescription has barely altered in 40 years (I'm now 61). What HAS changed recently, is looking through a cloud of floaters in both eyes! EDIT: In contrast to the views expressed in the video, I can honestly say that as far as I'm aware, my myopia is NOT progressing! BLUE LIGHT: I'm rather photosensitive, so I set my screens brightness very low (10% on the Tablet I'm writing this comment on at night).
Hi doctor! I’ve been looking through your videos and I’ve been wondering which eyelid cleanser would you consider to be the best option for very dry eyes/ buildup of bacteria on the lash lines
I had hernia surgery 2 weeks ago and I took Alive, not knowing it was Naproxen. My right eye became very blurry like a giant floater. It's slowly clearing up now. Years ago, I was prescribed Naproxen for pain and the white of my eye turned blood red. I stopped and it went away, I tried it again and it came back. It cleared up after I stopped. Does this make any sense to you?
Hi Dr Allen I’m a big fan of your channel 😊 I was wondering if you could include neuropathic dry eye/blepharitis in upcoming content? I am in my 20s and work as a dentist but have been really struggling with this for around 9months, so much so that I am unable to work due or function properly due to facial pain and eye pain. I have tried absolutely everything (home care/ in office treatments/ medications from my doctor and ophthalmologist). The only things I haven’t tried yet are scleral lenses do you think these would be helpful? All other diagnoses have been ruled out regarding scans and tests. Thank you so much👁️
Wow thanks for asking!!! I know we have a pretty blocked schedule for videos over the next few months, but perhaps we can do a livestream on it. Have you had lasik or any eye surgeries? Any thoughts to how it all started?
@@DoctorEyeHealth That would be amazing!!🙌 it developed quite suddenly when I moved to a new city and apartment for a new job- rapid onset of severe dry eye, blepharitis, facial pain and some skin flushing with no history of any of these before. I only had occasional dry eye with contact lenses in the past.
Hello. Thank you for your usefull videos. I have a question. I am 25 and i had healthy eye . I just diagnosed with 0.75 astigmatism and my doctor said that is because of over using of mobile and laptop. Could this happen in this age just because of screen?
heyy! i’ve been asking this to so many doctors but none understood me lol, I’ll try to tell you. So, Since 2021 I started to have a bigger allergy and it always appears in my eyes, I used to rub them a lot, I had no idea how bad this is for the eyes. There came a time when my left eye got a bigger eyelid, or droopy as they say. My question is if there is any way to make my right eye have a bigger eyelid too, basically that’s it
I'm personally looking for more specific information. I'm surprised you just talked about "screens" in general. There are so many different types of screens LED, LCD, FHD, AMOLED etc etc resolutions etc and all other factors like that (that I don't know how to communicate intelligibly) that I imagine make a difference. For example, when I look at old macs with Retina display, I feel ok, but the most updated Samsung television, with that super high-res almost gives me a headache! I would like more info about what actual screen types are better for our eyes.
I have been hardcore gamer ever since I was 10, now I'm 28. I started to develop farsightedness around 25-26, after over a decade of staring at a screen for an average of 8 hours a day. I struggle to see from a far like when I sit at the back rows in a classroom or even the middle rows. So today I had to go get checked out and they said that my "zoom" / "cylinder" is unadjusted and there aren't really any surgeries to fix that. I was advised to wear the glasses I ordered when I'm at the computer (because they add a blue light protection on top of the glass), when I drive and when I'm at the classroom. Which is basically most hours of the day. The optic doctor told me that the cause for the damage is most likely the fact that I spent so much time staring at a screen.
I had nearly 20/20 vision until recently, at around 16 (2021) I spent a year inside and noticed somewhat of a degrading in my vision. I am now 18 and had horrible habits with my health like in your case. I now can barely read anything 6 ft in front of me, I don't know if it will last forever but I think I made one of the biggest mistakes in my life.
I confess, hours upon hours nightly and my eyes are talking screaming Stop it! They literally feel like they are burned. I use more eye drops and find reading almost more difficult, so I am definitely rethinking my hobbies. But the content is so great, guess I could just listen.
Real quick: blue light lens coatings are not necessary!! I worked in data entry for 6 years. It didn't take long to start getting headaches and sore eyes. In 2023, all of our devices have methods of lowering blue light levels for free. Whether it be manually lowering the blue levels in the settings of your computer monitor or TV, or using software within the operating system like the "Night Light" setting. Yes, it changes the appearance of your screens, but it doesn't need to be very strong to be effective. 25% on the nightlight is plenty for regular use. Use it for a little while and then turn it off. The blue light will blind you. You'll never wanna turn night light off again. 😂 Also, turn down your brightness. You really don't need more than like 50% unless you're in direct sunlight. If you don't mind spending money on something that you can already fix for free, then go ahead, but the free alternative is more pleasant and natural to the eye anyways. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I am not trying to be rude but I put the phone down to not stare at your video and I swear I was hearing kermit the frog speaking about screen time and your eyes. No disrespect, kermit is AMAZING! So are you! ❤

A couple of weeks ago my eye doctor said my vision is currently stable. My vision used to change roughly .25 a year.
hi, started using luten zeax (gel). l-carnosien (cap and 1 drop 2x) bilerry fruit (cap) eyebright (tinc) Cod liver 400 (gel) and now thinking of using a christopher eyewash Overkill? 🐤
Ok so I been doing last year eye muscle exercises that lead to weird eye headaches for almost couple of months, Astigmatism grew as well after that.. When i have migraines or forehead headaches, i cant focus my eyes on anything, the vision is shaking+ i have dpdr and VSS.. I've got also a new pair of glasses that i wasnt comfortable at that time wearing it as it gave me strabismus, but now i kinda feel comfortable wearing it. What should i do Dr. Allen?!😢😢
Hi Dr. I’m a new flight attendant and is it safe to wear contactlenses during my flight? My prescription is -3.50. I dont like eyeglasses they make me feel light headed
Yes, contact lenses should not be an issue on flights but they may dry out faster due to air flow/ humidity on the plane. Some people may benefit from using artificial tear drops for contact lenses.
My mom used to scold me as a kid when I used to be glued to playing videogames on a screen, but as she got more into social media she started needing her own pair of glasses over the years…
Mine works all day in front of a monitor and her vision is just fine after years since she did eye surgery. I did the same surgery and 1 year later my myopia was back and it keeps progressing. Sht's f'd up!
computers are a disaster for your eyes. I got mine in 2018 and was on it 10 hrs per day. Horrific eye strain and constant blurred vision. I drastically cut back a few months ago and my eyes feel so much better.
Near work doesn't correlate with myopia. It's the lack of direct sunlight. It just so happens that activities like reading a book or using a computer are done inside. So, if I read a book outside in direct sunlight I won't be at a higher risk for myopia.
I have a question that Can migraines cause flashes in the eyes vision? I have your earlier video on migraine But in that you have not told this And I feel all the symptoms you mentioned in that video but you haven't mentioned the flashes of light. There is one more thing that I want to tell that if I continuesly stare at a blank wall, I feel that something is floating in my vision. And I want to say one more thing that you have really won my trust because whatever you have told is very true and correct.
Dr. Allen, going back to your older video with PRN 3 and the other one with HydroEye, one is more of an omega 3 and the other one is a vitamin. Is it safe to take both (3 daily PRN AND 4 daily HydroEye)? I want to take PRN because it’s the best omega 3 and my OmegaQuant said my levels are LOW, but I also want to take a good vitamin (HydroEye) for the reasons you have explained, but will the combined amount of Omega 3 be too much? Do you personally take both? I’m trying to word these questions the best I can; I hope it’s easy to read. Thank you so much!
I have an unrelated question: is it dangerous to wear contacts that are weaker than your prescription? I recently got a new prescription and the brand I was previously using (Acuvue Moist) does not go up to that power. Instead, I got prescribed Acuvue Oaysis. I do not like this brand and are much harder to take out. Is it okay if I use some of my old contacts that are Acuvue Moist and order contacts online from a place like 1 800 Contacts and just put in my old power?
My dry eyes are really bad at the moment. Im keeping 1 eye shut to try and keep it feeling moist. As soon as i put eye drops in it feels like they evaporate. Im doing heat masks, mssge, eye drops, omegas and humidifier specifically for last 3 weeks but no improvement. Any help would be appreciated as im so miserable! Also can heated eye mask make yours eyes more dry?? My optician says im doing all he can recommend and it takes time for this flare up to settle down.
i m felling dizziness in lift, classes, and many more situation by my childhood ....and the problems increasing day by day it's very problematic 😔..what is the solution.... please guide me......
hi boss, I've recently transitioned into wearing contact lenses fulltime (with the support of a pair of glasses during hours im not wearing the contacts) and im terrified of losing my vision by developing an eye infection or contracting the Acanthameoba. Do you believe if strictly following a good routine of contact lens care the risk of developing either is greatly reduced (preferably negligble) or wearing the contacts bearing a routine in mind still carries for me a considerable risk of developing an infection. Also, how many hours in a day can i safely wear my contacts? Thank you.
I can do exactly what you say as I only have the one eye when I look at something and it is blurry I pull the back and make it look clear, that is about as best as I can explain it.
One question.....will i have any permanent damage to my eye of i see tv from 9ft for 5 hours. And after few hours break....i use mobile for 4 hours...i see tv from morning 10am for 5 hours. And then mobile from evening 7 pm for 4 hours. Will it cause permanent damage to my eye
Do you know why I feel illness/nausea every time I work in front of my computer? My nose gets stuffy as well which comes from the screen. I can wake up, feel great and then when I start my work I feel illness and like a zombie with brain fog then when I go to the gym everything goes away. How come? Please someone help me
Hi doctor .. i had my eye test today and got -1.25 for one eye and -0.5 for another and now after wearing those i am feeling discomfort and little bit blurred vision in one eye..what might be the reason plz?
Have your eyes changed with screen time? Do you notice eyestrain with using your smartphone?
Screen time is bad for the eyes😢
If I've had a long session on my tablet/phone it takes a bit to be able to focus on distant objects.

Some days are blurrier than others! I found that stress and dry eye symptoms affect my vision when looking at screens and that that depends on the day. When I’m less stressed and anxious, the screen is more clear. That’s been my main guess about the seeming fluctuations.
That is very perceptive of you! It is crazy how our brains really are the master of our sight/vision.
Thank you ❤
SO happy to hear the videos have helped! Have you gotten any glasses yet? If so, how do you like them?
@@DoctorEyeHealth not as yet. I should get them in the next 15 days. Thanks again ❤️
I'm just curious, when you were working on that job, how many hours of sunlight did you get on average? Because I've been reading some studies that imply that the lack of sunlight could cause myopia. Sunlight is needed to produce enough of a certain hormone (idk the name) that is needed to stop your eyes from growing.
look up endmyopia. Thank me later
will the glasses cure the astigmatism ??
I started wearing glasses at age 4 and pretty much failed my eye test every year in school. My myopia got progressively worse each year until I was about -12 in the left and -10 in the right. This was back in the 80s and 90s. However, once I was in high school, college, and grad school, things leveled off. I'm 45 now and terrified of retinal issues due to the myopia, but my prescription hasn't changed much in the last 20 to 25 years (aside from starting to need bifocals).
Wow, it must have been a struggle. 🙏🏻
Did you spend a lot of time inside when your were a kid/teenager?
Glad to hear things leveled off for you. My mother is around that power as well. Fingers crossed you never have any issues!
@@diegoyuiop Not really. I think Inwas pretty normal for time inside/outside.
@@beckytaylor6885did you consider corrective surgeries despite the great success rate those have?
I don’t have the contacts yet, but I still worry about how irritated my eyes are almost constantly now…
Do you have a blue light filter on all of your devices?
@@satyalouis-guepin7692how do you get them, I’m on my iPad everyday.
i really did notice when i stare at a screen to long like my left eye get sort of annoyed and when i take off my glasses and just look away from the computer my eyes feel great
I can't look at any type of artificially lit digital display without instantly feeling sharp and lasting pain in my eyes.
@@retropursuit992 Get sun vision RLCD monitor, or Dasung e-ink monitor, or an DLP laser projector. These monitors cause me no eye pain
I can tell you my eyes got destroyed by screens, maybe more due to close work BUT also the flickering of OLED screen is a issue.
Any reason you wore bifocals/ progressives when you were young? Did you have accommodative insufficiency issues or other binocular challenges?
@@DoctorEyeHealthwhat’s the future for myopia like reverse to 20/20 vision
@@DoctorEyeHealthi am also a huge gamer that has been struck down with dry eyes. It is awful. Whenever my eyes feel well enough to play, i play, and then they feel bad again. I've struggled to give it up.
@@DoctorEyeHealth If the problem is the distance to the object... how about 'computer glasses'? Essentially, they just add a lens in front of your eyes that allows you to focus on the screen with the eyes almost at infinity. It would be as if you're looking at objects far away, instead of close to you?
I really like the change of tone your videos have been having lately comapred to the older ones, they're more research oriented and educative :)
There's no difference between direct light vs. reflected light. It's simply light.
All the studies that I've read say that only children have a risk of myopia progression from near work. So I'm surprised to hear you say that this also includes adults. I'll have to read through the sources that you linked in the description.
Hi Dr,
I want just to tell you that I am really satisfied with your work.
Thanks for sharing! This comment made my day!!!
Unfortunately, not one glasses with protection against blue light will not help you (they only block blue light, not flickering).
Because the cause of dry eyes and eye pain from a monitor or phone is precisely PWM flickering in 80% .
look for a monitor with the lowest PWM. Good luck
Great information ! Thanks, Dr. Allen.
Absolutely! Glad it was helpful!
I really hope that both hardware and software will become more eye safe in the next couple of years!

I always wondered if the flickering of the screen refreshing would tire your eyes.
it's tiring and even worse it's harmful to the eyes, especially if there's a strong PWM effect. (pulse-width modulation).
There also is dry eye playlist on my channel

Is it common to have astigmatism ( or difficulties in seeing at night due to light source ) even with glasses meant for astigmatism?

Why does it seem that only one of my eye gets worse?
My left eye has been burning for weeks. Not sure if it’s related to staring at a computer screen for hours at a time. But it all started with my side of my eye hurting so I rinsed it out with water. I even rinsed out the top layer of my eye under my eyelid. I’ve been using PF eye drops everyday since they’ve been helping a little bit.
Pulse Width Modulation can causes dry eye syndrome in very big probability.
How is it now?
Does it help to turn the brightness down on the computer screen ?
yes it might
Yeah but not to the lowest so that it won't stress your eyes
probably my eyes do get dry too often but im glad filters for blue light exist, the difference is immediately noticeable between staring for hours at a white page or a yellow/orange-ish one
just as glad as my eyesight still preserving it's capabilities without the need of graduated eye glasses

I know that you do not understand the concept, but early myopia can be prevented, when still at 20/50.
Thank you. You just gave me motivation to stop looking at my phone.
Doctor, thank you for this info.
Absolutely. The past couple years I’ve had more screen time with my job and it’s caused dry eyes.
Not too surprised, hopefully blinking, relaxing and other methods help.
Hello. Thank you for your usefull videos. I have a question. I am 25 and i had healthy eye . I just diagnosed with 0.75 astigmatism and my doctor said that is because of over using of mobile and laptop. Could this happen in this age just because of screen?
My doctor said only miopia is from screens. Nit astigmatism.
heyy! i’ve been asking this to so many doctors but none understood me lol, I’ll try to tell you.
If eyestrain and dry eyes is left untreated what will it lead to?
Headaches, loss of productivity, worsening dry eye symptoms/pain.
Am getting better now and thanks to your videos which also helped me a lot
I am having similar issues...did your condition improve?
So does it really damage it if I work on laptop and use phone most of the time? Or it depends whether it is too close to my eyes?
It's not likely damaging your eyes but may cause eye strain. Or is also more likely to cause you to become more near-sighted the younger you are...
whatever i do i feel burdon on eyes...i went to doctor checked everything is ok....what to do....i feel better when i close one eye(any eye).
Also, turn down your brightness.
So are you! ❤
Hello I hope you're safe over there? I hope this year brings happiness prosperity, love ❤and peace all over the world🌏. I'm Engineer Graham Bolt from Nashville Tennessee, where are you from?💙
Im applying Minoxidil serum on my face for beard growth and 2/3 times accidently when I was applying to mustache, it bounced back and fell in my right eye. And im experiencing Eye twitches from then
And now days im getting eye bags, wrinkles and dark circles all of a sudden, I dont know reason for this
Any suggestions doctor?
Thank you for your amazing work! I learn a lot with you. I have a question : is it real ortho K can help fix our vision by wearing it at night? Have you done a video about it? Johny
Yes, absolutely! Thanks so much, Johny! Here is the video ua-cam.com/video/vciSjD9oifI/v-deo.html
You're only talking about flat screens though. Put your face up close to a monitor with a tube in it and you'll be hurling your head away from the screen and closing your eyes in pain within 2-3 seconds. It's an intense and very immediate stinging.
I know a case that I’m sure about, a guy exposed to phone until 3am he strained his retina and got partially blind when he woke up in the morning… doctor said his veins behind retina started to leak fluid due to strain that ripped off the retina
Omg
I just need to know, should you have high brightness in a dark room, or low brightness in a dark room? I heard having low light in a dark room is worse. Just want to know whats best.
Too much near work gave me strabismus (esotropia). i was over prescribed, now I cant focus evenly and get double vision. lifetime of vision therapy to keep it at bay. sucks
Could you elaborate on different screens? Like an Oled Screen is so much worse for my eyes and i get this pain in my eyelid after a while.
I have been detected recently with mild glaucoma .. I am using glasses from last 16 years with myopia and astigmatism.. I have -3. 75 sph and -2. 50 cyl in right eye and -3. 5 sph and -1. 25 cy in left eye.. What should I do now.. What should be the treatment options for me..
i started wearing glasses since i was ~7. i played 30-60m of flash games weekly, my main source of entertainment was a soccer ball and a brother. my current eyesight is -8.5, education in china was no joke. also gotta mention poor lighting and terrible air quality. kids should not be subjected to such cruel long hours of school work, then the endless homework. especially coming from someone with adhd, i believe it's harming us more than helping us, killing our eyes and creativity
I am a 26 year old college student. I have a glasses prescription of -3.00 in both my right and left eye. Should I be concerned of my vision getting way worse. The reason why I asked because I have a family history on both my parents side of being extremely myopic. My dad is roughly -12. I do believe. And I have an aunt who is -15.00. Do you think my vision will ever get as my dad. My dad is 70 years old. For the past 5 years my glasses prescription hasn’t changed. A couple of weeks ago my eye doctor said my vision is currently stable. My vision used to change roughly .25 a year.
look up endmyopia. Thank me later
Can you possibly make a video on why my glasses make one of my eyes red ? When I don’t wear them my eye is fine
Doctor I started decreasing contrast and seeing eye floaters is it photoreceptor damage. Which test to find it
hi, started using luten zeax (gel).
l-carnosien (cap and 1 drop 2x)
bilerry fruit (cap)
eyebright (tinc)
Cod liver 400 (gel)
and now thinking of using a christopher eyewash
Overkill?
Some people may benefit from using artificial tear drops for contact lenses.
look up endmyopia. Thank me later
My mom used to scold me as a kid when I used to be glued to playing videogames on a screen, but as she got more into social media she started needing her own pair of glasses over the years…
How ironic
Hello, what is the thickness of the cornea? Is it normal? And in the case of high astigmatism, how thin is the cornea?
How does all of this apply to larger screens such as TVs? How close can you be to a 77"? How close should you be?
I have a question that Can migraines cause flashes in the eyes vision?
I have your earlier video on migraine But in that you have not told this And I feel all the symptoms you mentioned in that video but you haven't mentioned the flashes of light.
There is one more thing that I want to tell that if I continuesly stare at a blank wall, I feel that something is floating in my vision.
And I want to say one more thing that you have really won my trust because whatever you have told is very true and correct.
This is a serious question but does it matter if your short sighted and you try to focus on things far away does it help with myopia
Hi Doctor. Can i take a serving of PRN softgels in the morning and then a serving of Hydroeyes at night or is that too much?
Thank you
I have an unrelated question: is it dangerous to wear contacts that are weaker than your prescription?
My optician says im doing all he can recommend and it takes time for this flare up to settle down.
how does the pwm factor on oled screens affects your eyes?
i m felling dizziness in lift, classes, and many more situation by my childhood ....and the problems increasing day by day it's very problematic 😔..what is the solution.... please guide me......
hi boss, I've recently transitioned into wearing contact lenses fulltime (with the support of a pair of glasses during hours im not wearing the contacts) and im terrified of losing my vision by developing an eye infection or contracting the Acanthameoba. Do you believe if strictly following a good routine of contact lens care the risk of developing either is greatly reduced (preferably negligble) or wearing the contacts bearing a routine in mind still carries for me a considerable risk of developing an infection. Also, how many hours in a day can i safely wear my contacts? Thank you.
I can do exactly what you say as I only have the one eye when I look at something and it is blurry I pull the back and make it look clear, that is about
as best as I can explain it.
Hey a simple questions, can monitors cause dark circles ?
Hi doc! Do you prefer light or dark mode on your phone?
One question.....will i have any permanent damage to my eye of i see tv from 9ft for 5 hours. And after few hours break....i use mobile for 4 hours...i see tv from morning 10am for 5 hours. And then mobile from evening 7 pm for 4 hours. Will it cause permanent damage to my eye
Iam using Fluocinolone acetonide with miconazole nitrate cream (MICZ-F) for eye lashes dandruff
Is that right iam using that stuff...?
Could you speak about the new prescription eye drop Lotilaner for eyelash dermadex mites treatment, expected to become available last in year?

Do you know why I feel illness/nausea every time I work in front of my computer? My nose gets stuffy as well which comes from the screen.
I can wake up, feel great and then when I start my work I feel illness and like a zombie with brain fog then when I go to the gym everything goes away. How come? Please someone help me
Thank you so much!
Thanks Doc
Hi doctor .. i had my eye test today and got -1.25 for one eye and -0.5 for another and now after wearing those i am feeling discomfort and little bit blurred vision in one eye..what might be the reason plz?
