You're not checking for the A series because every android budget phones from Huawei, honor, Redmi, Samsung, vivo, oppo, OnePlus, realme, Motorola still use LCD IPS panels. How would I know ahead of time if I’m sensitive to Oled displays? What if I have bad eyesight as is would that make me less prone to this because I can’t see as well?
It's not entirely correct that 10% of people can see flickering. They can't, but they get affected by it nonetheless. For example, to me OLED screens look great. But after a couple of minutes looking at them I get eye strain, motion sickness and even headaches. 10-20 minutes is enough for me to become dizzy for an hour or two. And I suspect that more than 10% of people are affected by the PWM. Some of them use the phone daily, get migraines because of that, but they don't know what caused them and just continue to suffer thinking that nothing can be done.
Ì am shocked I've been to three Dr's having ocular migraines and dizziness no one ever said any thing about this thank you for your comment I never associatedthe dizziness with the headaches

I like oled its my favourite screen because other displays gives me a headache and Hurts my eyes on LCD display because must be because of the blue back light but the amoled is so much worse for me I find the lcd colours hard to focus on because everything seems to have a blue tint but I am colour blind and the way LCD display are it just makes it harder for me to see colours as good everyone has different eyes and I did research on LCDs and oled its crazy how different people are affected by the displays

PWM was a problem for LCD screens as well 10 years ago. It was just cheaper, apparently, to control brightness with LED backlight flickering instead of using DC current. With OLED the problem is that the "coloring" layer and the backlight are one and the same. LEDs. And it's difficult to retain great contrast and color accuracy on an OLED screen while using DC dimming. Hope manufacturers figure this one out, as the return of the PWM problem is not fun.
because of this reason I am downgrading from my iPhone 15 plus to the iPhone 11. I've suffered headaches and have felt dizzy as well as eye strain. awful.
I'm one of the 10%. I switched from an iPhone 12, to an 11, because of the PWM. The 13's seems to give me less trouble. The only new iPnones with LCD are the SE, and 11.
I bought an iPhone 11 Pro a few years back. I loved it. But after a week my eyes were a mess. I sold it an got an iPhone 11 and all the symptoms disappeared. I would Lillie to upgrade but am afraid that I will waste my money.
Yes, I suffer from it, and the story begins after I moved from the LCD screen of the iPhone 7 to my new iPhone 12, which has an OLED screen. Within twenty minutes, I had dizziness and pain inside the eye. And feeling sleepy. And I went to the doctor, and he advised me to leave the phone, and he told me that it was because of the radiation of the screen, and here I thought of going back to my old phone, iPhone 7, and as I expected, all the symptoms disappeared. I discovered later that the technology of the OLED screen turns off and on millions of times, and this exhausts the eye. Conclusion: I bought the iPhone 11 with the LCD screen and I am very happy knowing that Apple is still producing and selling it.
You can buy iPhone SE 3rd it’s really good ! iPhone 7 battery and everything is not good anymore. New SE 2022 is very fast and you can do more things .. if you want bigger phone with gestures then get the iPhone 11
This issue needs more coverage, it affects a LOT of people. There's an almost 300-page thread on Macrumors about it and various other tech forums dedicated to finding 'safe' devices that won't wreck your eyes. I'm using the SE3 right now with no issues(great phone, highly recommend it), but I'm afraid Apple and other manufacturers will abandon LCD altogether at some point. This phone should last me a good long time but I don't know what I'll do if there are no PWM-free options once it finally dies. Hopefully micro LED will be available by then. I have sent feedback to Apple about PWM and I encourage everyone else with this issue to do the same. You'd think for a company that's so big on accessibility, they'd offer DC dimming for eye health.
in theory, it will make iris muscle contract to frequent.., makes eyes feel tired, dizzy. You cant see it, but you can feel it. I heard there are clinical experiment research that showed amoled or oled more challenging vs IPS lcd to your eye via pwm flickering mechanism in hongkong.. i forget the researcher but thats the result from their experiment

Thank god somebody else is talking about this. Reviewers unilaterally treat AMOLED screens as good and LCD as bad. It's way more nuanced than this. As someone who can't tolerate OLED displays, my choice for a smartphone is mostly limited to the lower midrange as there is almost no high end phone with an LCD.
@@zenithchan1646 With iPhones you have the 11 and the SE. I don't really like iOS but after a couple of years of using lower midrange LCD androids (A Realme 5 Pro and Motorola One Fusion Plus), I bit the bullet and bought an SE just because of the great LCD screen.
I don't get it I love OLED screens they just look so much better, looking at my VA LCD monitor it feels like I'm looking at fog with it's low contrast. Never noticed any flicker

I believe currently, as far as purchasing a phone that still uses lcd technology, the Asus zenfon 6 might just be the best option.. 🤷 Apparently it also has an easily unlockable bootloader..

I’m one of the 10% who can’t use OLED due to PWM making me ill. UA-camr Aaron Zollo has this issue too. LCD iPhones are getting rarer and often older ones have to be chosen. Aaron has said the new iPhone Pros with 120Hz screens do give him less trouble.
I really like oled screens but I get what you mean because an amoled display gives me a headache and hurts my eyes im not sure if it's because I'm colour blind and I don't see some colours right but a oled seems better for my eyes and a LCD display I'd probably take a stroke or something because the display is just terrible for my eyes all together and make me not fell to great
Thanks for covering this underreported topic. I can see the flicker but OLED screens rapidly damages my eyes giving me painful eye strain and making me unable to focus properly. I would really like to know if there is a difference between OLED scenes on this issue.
Yeah dc dimming is the king to look for. It's extremely rare in smartphones: only one or two models from OnePlus had it once. But is more common with tv's. So if you're looking for a tv, go for budget Sony tv's as they typically use dc dimming. Lcd tv's can give you just as much pain as oled smartphones. Some tv's go all the way down to 120hz pwm flicker on lcd screens. Luckily with smartphones, lcd's aren't an issue
I am one of the 10 percent and I never was able to use Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy Note 3 Decided to give AMOLED a chance after a while and bought a phone with one of the lowest AMOLED flickering on the market(on par with iPhone 13) - Poco F4 GT Really wanted to like this phone and it was real good, but I just can't use it After 30 min of looking at it, my eyes starting to feel like they are sanded, muscles behind pupils starting hurt, so as the brain itself It is crazy that manufacturers go on with this experiment just leaving people with sensitive eyes behind What are we going to buy? There is no good phone out there without AMOLED!!!!
Another UA-camr mentioned that DC dimming removed the issue for him. Then they software updated it to force PWM dimming, and he started having issues again. This kept happening with all devices he bought. So clearly all they have to do is give us a software option to choose PWM and DC dimming. I assume DC will require more power and causes more wear and tear. That said, I'd rather have that Vs headaches and feel physically sick after using an OLED TV i.e for extended periods of times. Let me remark that I never had any issues. This came gradually over time.
Oh my god! U just addressed an issue that none of my friends accepted when I noticed Oneplus lockscreen flickered.. it literally gave headache to me looking at the screen’s unlock animation.. thank god I still use iPhone 11 with LCD panel
Those 10%-(even more probably) PWM Or flickering sensitive peoples doesn't actually see flickering coz its not possible for our 24fps eyes to see even 240hz motion or flicker but they do definitely notice some discomfort and strain specially below 25-30% brightness in amoled/oled displays. Maybe some eyes can even notice slight flickering at
Huawei is actually doing far better job considering and tackling this issue with providing 3000+ hz pwm dimming while IPhones and Samsung is giving 240-500hz in their overpriced flagship phones.
The quality of the oled panel is also important. I can use my zfold5 all day with no problems, no headaches and no eye strain but I had to sell my oled switch because I'd get headaches after 20min of use
I can't "SEE" the flickering, but the displays make my eyes hurt and a bit of nausea that i never got from LCD screens. And it sucks, because little fixes like true tone/dark mode/white point reduction/diming doesn't really help much. So I'll keep using the SE line until apple phases out LCD displays entirely.
LCD displays have this same issue as well. Their backlight uses PWM to reduce brightness. You’d need to make sure the phone doesn’t use PWM to control brightness and it’s not common to find because PWM is the most energy efficient way to control any LED

Wait I just realized that the screen on the MacBook was "Liquid Retina XDR display" or Mini-LED. Is PWM issues only exclusive to OLED screens? Because I experienced all the symptoms mentioned when using the new M3 MBP.

Especially bc i dont see that flickering, but whenever im in my bedroom, in complete darkness, and ive been looking at my phonescreen for a long time, and when i turn it off, i do see sone kind of flickering. But as soon as i turn on the lights in my room, the flickering stops, and this is a interesting!
On the iPhone go to accessibilities and turn on the white color dimming. At night put it around 80%. Create a shortcut on your scroll down screen menu. Turn the brightness up to 100%. At daytime just use it. At night click the shortcut and enjoy using your phone without flickering but less „bright“ screen
This is such a big problem. I had to return so many phones before i learned about pwm. What is really strange though is that i have no problem with older oled screens such as S7Edge. I lieterally can look for 6 hours straight on my S7edge. But if i look for 10 mins on a S22 or Iphone 13 or whatever i am finished. I feel like passing out or vomit or smthn very strange feeling which is hard to describe. If you now look at the pwm frequency of the S7edge it is low as 240hz. Just like many other phones. So it is not just the frequency i feel like. But i understand not enough about the whole screen technology to say what exactly the culprit is. It is so frustrating not to be able to use all the new shiny phones.
To decrease influence of PWM on your eyes - use iPhone with the smallest screen size - use it at max distance away from the eyes - set it to max brightness - use black theme ( it greatly decrease the pwm effect )
It perfectly explained the sudden onset of my migraine and eye sight deterioration since using iPhone 12 Pro . I can’t see the flashing but my eyes get blurry and tired quite easily. I’m having difficulty tracking rapid movement such as kids jumping on the trampoline.it triggers the reaction similar to motion sickness. I’ve seen eye physiotherapist, neurology physiotherapist, optometry surgeon, neurologist. The answer is optical nerve damage for some reason. Luckily my old iPhone 6s still works. I’ve changed the battery and hopefully my eyes will get better
Seeing it? Not really! Feeling it after a while on the phone ? Yes. I had the iPhone 11 Pro Max for 2 weeks and had a lot of eye strain and headaches. Turned it for the 11 and have been fine. Just switched carriers and got the 13 pro but returned it and decided to keep my 2 year old 11. I know there are tricks to keep brightness up and white point about 70% but still. If they make another lcd phone I’ll buy it. OLED ain’t for me
Yep…I’m one of the 10 %. Just tried to switch from my 11 to a 13 pro. Within 10 mins I had to turn it off bc I felt like i was going blind. I’m back on my 11 now. Not sure what to do bc all the new iPhones are all oled screens.

Thank you for covering this! Nobody talks about it and it's a huge issue for those of us who are affected by PWM sensitivity. For me, I can always tell right away because I strugle to focus on the screen and keep focus. It's like when your camera is focus hunting but it's my eyes trying to lock focus on text. That leads to immediate eye strain and tension headache. I have a XR and I don't have any problems with viewing that screen at all. I've tried the iPhone 12, 13 and now 14 Pro and all have been returned to Apple because I can't handle the OLED screens. Each year I hope they changed something that will make it tolerable but they don't. So I'm still using my XR and hoping Apple keeps at least one phone in their lineup with LCD displays.
I did the Same😂, keep return it .. XD . But you can use iPhone 11 , much faster and better camera and everything else just see the specs .. it’s a very good upgrade for you from XR.. night modus are there and many more things ..

I noticed this while watching reviews of the Galaxy S23. Some cameras UA-camrs use have captured this flickering and it got me concerned. Even though I probably wouldn't notice this in actuality, I was afraid of how it could negatively affect my eyes without my knowing just like you mentioned.

This is the reason why I stick to my iPhone 11. Also, I had an OLED Nintendo Switch that has this issue and the grint tint. I sold it bought a v2 instead.
Reading on (AM)OLED is good for short periods but not sustainable for longer. Color accuracy, sharp contrast and all that are absolutely true compared to an IPS LCD. Even if one does not see the flicker, yet it puts a strain on the eyes even using it for viewing in "dimmed" light at night for example. My choice for a new phone (Xiaomi Note 10 5G) with all its downsides compared to its other (Xiaomi Note 10 Pro) counterpart was only the screen technology. I regularly read books on my phone and AMOLED is just not for me. Thank you for this great presentation!
Is there a way to test if oled bothers you before you get a new phone? I currently have a 7 but am thinking of upgrading to either the 13mini or the se3. I know the mini has oked and I don’t want to find out after spending like 700$ that it will make me sick or give me headaches.
My OLED tv start giving me eyes strain and a terrible headache i tried to lower the Pixel brightness but with no results i can work with my phone for hours with no issues just the lg oled tv do that to me and i don't know how to fix that. i can solve it if i turn off the oled motion ?
Mini-LED is a LCD based display tech. Many Mini-LED displays and FALD based displays also use PWM…just as an fyi. Usually at 960Hz on the TCL/Samsung panels. E-ink might be the best option 😅

I just recently found out that my favorite daily-driver phone, the Samsung galaxy s20fe has PWM, and has been causing significant eyestrain> I'm currently looking to ditch my current phone in favor for one that uses some form of anti-flicker. I used to have the LG v60, and the G8 after that, and never had an issue.
Great Video. I have a iPhone 8 Plus and looking to upgrade. Went into the local OPTUS store (Australia) to check out the iPhone 13. Soon as I sat my phone next to the 13 it was like night and Day. I hated the new phones OLED screens. Not sure if it was the flickering but it didn't look as clear or as vibrant to my eyes. No idea if I am in the 10% or not. I use a 27inch 5K iMac which is LCD and it looks awesome. Having said that OPTUS have a special on for a brand new iPhone 11 at half price. I might go for that model as it uses a LCD display. I get what you mean but I like oled has been my favourite screen but I have other problems with other screens and the amoled display really hurts my eyes and gives me a headache and the LCD Hurts my eyes but not as much as the amoled everyone has different eyes but I am colour blind can't see some colours as good
@@TheHuski a oled is a better quality display with better colours and oled panel's emits less blue light its why the colours are off on the LCDs and oled has more sharpness of any given image its why most people likes a oled screen LCDs can get blocked or broke pixels but the oled screen while the oled only needs some pixels to lite up the screen but some people can see flickering in oled screens I can't but some can you can and you can mess with the screen colours on the settings and change the screen colour a bit to make it look more like a LCD that should help with the flickering and everyone have different eyes so it's why some people likes oled or amoled or LCD but lcd are only used on really cheap phones now or if a midrange phone are trying to cut price's down on a phone but I think people should have more of a option when it comes to a display so thay can have the phone thay won't with the display thay won't

I'm not PWM sensitive so I don't have any issues with OLED TVs. However I avoid LCD TVs at all costs because of the flickering. As someone with epilepsy the flickering is a nightmare.
I dont see any PWM flickering, but i can feel it after few minutes. My eyes feels heavy like eye muscles ar really tighten and then i got headache because of that

It cannot be solved unless they turn off PWM flickering. But they wont, because if you turn it off, then OLED screen will tint, burn out and become unusable within a month of regular use. It such a great looking display, but doesnt last.
The flicker isn't constant it is more random but often right after i blink. It looks similar to the demonstration in the video. Usually it is more of a black flash but sometimes it is much faster than portrayed. I see similar effects with color wheel projectors, the image randomly splitting into green, red, blue. This effect also happens to a minority of people. I thought the screen was broken with a lose wire or bad GPU drivers lol
That's why I switched back to iPhone XR now. Even if you could choose a high PWM rate phone, like Hornor phones, it still has effects on your eyes but is still way better than the Samsung OLED screen. Luckily we still get some new LCD phones, you guys could check Redmi Note 11T pro / Redmi K50i India version.

It's true that I'm not one of the people affected by this problem, but it's clear that it's annoying to realize that the 2 biggest and richest smartphone manufacturers (Apple and Samsung) are the ones with the worst PMW, 300, especially when many other manufacturers already have screens that go up to 1900 PMW.

I get terrible eye strain from oled. Not so bad on iPhone 12 but Samsung's screen on the 23 ultra is killing me. One plus ce 3 lite. Samsung A14, a Nokia? What's the best LCD phone at the moment?
Month into new OLED phone. Noticed on low bright if background is black and you move something like dark gray color, there is like purple ghosting, very noticeable if you move dark gray color very fast. I use dark mode btw.
Dark mode makes this much better, and there are other ‘tricks’ that lets you have the brightness on full without getting to bright. No dimming equals no PWM flickering.
google pixel phones with OLED -- like the 5, 6, and 7 - all give me eye strain immediately. Samsung galaxy's super AMOLED are completely comfortable to use. The AMOLED in my pixel 2 was also great. Thanks to Consumerism, we have a billion crappy panels being used to cut costs instead of ONE that is the BEST in ALL phones.
Hello. I am having a big problem in deciding on what iPhone to upgrade to after 6 years. I currently have the iPhone 6. Regular iPhone 13 which has PWM and OLED screen, I have never used before. Scared of effects or symptoms. Or normal iPhone 11. I don't really need the latest and greatest. Please advise? Thanks.
Thank you for this video! Unfortunately, it's something that isn't talked about. I just bought my first AMOLED phone 2 days ago and I was feeling super dizzy, nauseus, dry eyes and some migraines. I told this to my BF and at first he thought that I was crazy to think the phone is doing that to me... but after some research I finally found that I was right and explained to him that I was right and why and he finally understood and it's quite concerned with it. He's an Amoled user and never knew that this is an actual problem for a few people. The flicking is not perceptible at eye it's only possible to see through a camera but your eyes are feeling it. The store were I bought the phone don't accept phone returns. I just emailed them explaining that is a health issue and I hope they open an exception. Fingers crossed 🤞

@@Med-rb7lk Same as me. At first I tought that I was starting to have some eye problems, it was very difficult to focus and felt super dizzy too. But I was still transitioning between the old phone and the new one. And I didn't feel the same when I was using the old phone. That's when I started to think there was something wrong... I did some research on the AMOLED/OLED screens and found the reason for feeling that way. The problem now is that there aren't many recent phones with an IPS LCD screen anymore. All that are coming out on the market have AMOLED screens.

PWM was a problem for LCD screens as well 10 years ago. It was just cheaper, apparently, to control brightness with LED backlight flickering instead of using DC current. With OLED the problem is that the "coloring" layer and the backlight are one and the same. LEDs. And it's difficult to retain great contrast and color accuracy on an OLED screen while using DC dimming.
Hope manufacturers figure this one out, as the return of the PWM problem is not fun.

The only new iPnones with LCD are the SE, and 11.
I bought an iPhone 11 Pro a few years back. I loved it. But after a week my eyes were a mess. I sold it an got an iPhone 11 and all the symptoms disappeared. I would Lillie to upgrade but am afraid that I will waste my money.

Yes, I suffer from it, and the story begins after I moved from the LCD screen of the iPhone 7 to my new iPhone 12, which has an OLED screen. Within twenty minutes, I had dizziness and pain inside the eye. And feeling sleepy. And I went to the doctor, and he advised me to leave the phone, and he told me that it was because of the radiation of the screen, and here I thought of going back to my old phone, iPhone 7, and as I expected, all the symptoms disappeared. I discovered later that the technology of the OLED screen turns off and on millions of times, and this exhausts the eye.
Conclusion: I bought the iPhone 11 with the LCD screen and I am very happy knowing that Apple is still producing and selling it.
You can buy iPhone SE 3rd it’s really good ! iPhone 7 battery and everything is not good anymore. New SE 2022 is very fast and you can do more things .. if you want bigger phone with gestures then get the iPhone 11
This issue needs more coverage, it affects a LOT of people. There's an almost 300-page thread on Macrumors about it and various other tech forums dedicated to finding 'safe' devices that won't wreck your eyes. I'm using the SE3 right now with no issues(great phone, highly recommend it), but I'm afraid Apple and other manufacturers will abandon LCD altogether at some point. This phone should last me a good long time but I don't know what I'll do if there are no PWM-free options once it finally dies. Hopefully micro LED will be available by then. I have sent feedback to Apple about PWM and I encourage everyone else with this issue to do the same. You'd think for a company that's so big on accessibility, they'd offer DC dimming for eye health.
in theory, it will make iris muscle contract to frequent.., makes eyes feel tired, dizzy. You cant see it, but you can feel it. I heard there are clinical experiment research that showed amoled or oled more challenging vs IPS lcd to your eye via pwm flickering mechanism in hongkong.. i forget the researcher but thats the result from their experiment

As someone who can't tolerate OLED displays, my choice for a smartphone is mostly limited to the lower midrange as there is almost no high end phone with an LCD.

@@zenithchan1646 With iPhones you have the 11 and the SE. I don't really like iOS but after a couple of years of using lower midrange LCD androids (A Realme 5 Pro and Motorola One Fusion Plus), I bit the bullet and bought an SE just because of the great LCD screen.

I don't get it I love OLED screens they just look so much better, looking at my VA LCD monitor it feels like I'm looking at fog with it's low contrast. Never noticed any flicker

I’m one of the 10% who can’t use OLED due to PWM making me ill. UA-camr Aaron Zollo has this issue too. LCD iPhones are getting rarer and often older ones have to be chosen. Aaron has said the new iPhone Pros with 120Hz screens do give him less trouble.

I really like oled screens but I get what you mean because an amoled display gives me a headache and hurts my eyes im not sure if it's because I'm colour blind and I don't see some colours right but a oled seems better for my eyes and a LCD display I'd probably take a stroke or something because the display is just terrible for my eyes all together and make me not fell to great
Thanks for covering this underreported topic. I can see the flicker but OLED screens rapidly damages my eyes giving me painful eye strain and making me unable to focus properly. I would really like to know if there is a difference between OLED scenes on this issue.

Yeah dc dimming is the king to look for. It's extremely rare in smartphones: only one or two models from OnePlus had it once. But is more common with tv's. So if you're looking for a tv, go for budget Sony tv's as they typically use dc dimming. Lcd tv's can give you just as much pain as oled smartphones. Some tv's go all the way down to 120hz pwm flicker on lcd screens. Luckily with smartphones, lcd's aren't an issue
I'm also affected by PWM. Unfortunately it eliminates all great OLED screen smartphones for me.
Bad IPS can hurt your eyes too. Switching over to a dc dimmed oled phone fixed this.

Decided to give AMOLED a chance after a while and bought a phone with one of the lowest AMOLED flickering on the market(on par with iPhone 13) - Poco F4 GT

Another UA-camr mentioned that DC dimming removed the issue for him. Then they software updated it to force PWM dimming, and he started having issues again. This kept happening with all devices he bought.
So clearly all they have to do is give us a software option to choose PWM and DC dimming. I assume DC will require more power and causes more wear and tear. That said, I'd rather have that Vs headaches and feel physically sick after using an OLED TV i.e for extended periods of times.
Let me remark that I never had any issues. This came gradually over time.
Oh my god! U just addressed an issue that none of my friends accepted when I noticed Oneplus lockscreen flickered.. it literally gave headache to me looking at the screen’s unlock animation.. thank god I still use iPhone 11 with LCD panel
Those 10%-(even more probably) PWM Or flickering sensitive peoples doesn't actually see flickering coz its not possible for our 24fps eyes to see even 240hz motion or flicker but they do definitely notice some discomfort and strain specially below 25-30% brightness in amoled/oled displays.
Maybe some eyes can even notice slight flickering at

The iPhone 13 Pro was the first OLED phone I could use without eye strain. I still keep my 11 around just in case.
Use your phone and record a video on the screen to check if it flickers... if not, congratulations, but if it does, you should limit its use!

Huawei is actually doing far better job considering and tackling this issue with providing 3000+ hz pwm dimming while IPhones and Samsung is giving 240-500hz in their overpriced flagship phones.
The quality of the oled panel is also important. I can use my zfold5 all day with no problems, no headaches and no eye strain but I had to sell my oled switch because I'd get headaches after 20min of use
I can't "SEE" the flickering, but the displays make my eyes hurt and a bit of nausea that i never got from LCD screens. And it sucks, because little fixes like true tone/dark mode/white point reduction/diming doesn't really help much. So I'll keep using the SE line until apple phases out LCD displays entirely.
LCD displays have this same issue as well. Their backlight uses PWM to reduce brightness. You’d need to make sure the phone doesn’t use PWM to control brightness and it’s not common to find because PWM is the most energy efficient way to control any LED
I thought I was crazy with my new Macbook Pro M3. My eyes started straining (vision becoming blurry), and other migraine symptoms began flaring after minutes of use.

Wait I just realized that the screen on the MacBook was "Liquid Retina XDR display" or Mini-LED. Is PWM issues only exclusive to OLED screens? Because I experienced all the symptoms mentioned when using the new M3 MBP.

Especially bc i dont see that flickering, but whenever im in my bedroom, in complete darkness, and ive been looking at my phonescreen for a long time, and when i turn it off, i do see sone kind of flickering. But as soon as i turn on the lights in my room, the flickering stops, and this is a interesting!

LCD wins for longevity. No bs green lines, no burn ins, and cheap to replace.
On the iPhone go to accessibilities and turn on the white color dimming. At night put it around 80%.
Create a shortcut on your scroll down screen menu.
Turn the brightness up to 100%.
At daytime just use it. At night click the shortcut and enjoy using your phone without flickering but less „bright“ screen
This is such a big problem. I had to return so many phones before i learned about pwm. What is really strange though is that i have no problem with older oled screens such as S7Edge. I lieterally can look for 6 hours straight on my S7edge. But if i look for 10 mins on a S22 or Iphone 13 or whatever i am finished. I feel like passing out or vomit or smthn very strange feeling which is hard to describe. If you now look at the pwm frequency of the S7edge it is low as 240hz. Just like many other phones. So it is not just the frequency i feel like. But i understand not enough about the whole screen technology to say what exactly the culprit is. It is so frustrating not to be able to use all the new shiny phones.
To decrease influence of PWM on your eyes
- use iPhone with the smallest screen size
- use it at max distance away from the eyes
- set it to max brightness
- use black theme ( it greatly decrease the pwm effect )
- don't use iPhone
I think it’s the opposite. LCD ones don’t take in that much power so they are better for battery

It perfectly explained the sudden onset of my migraine and eye sight deterioration since using iPhone 12 Pro . I can’t see the flashing but my eyes get blurry and tired quite easily. I’m having difficulty tracking rapid movement such as kids jumping on the trampoline.it triggers the reaction similar to motion sickness. I’ve seen eye physiotherapist, neurology physiotherapist, optometry surgeon, neurologist. The answer is optical nerve damage for some reason. Luckily my old iPhone 6s still works. I’ve changed the battery and hopefully my eyes will get better
It's not so much that you can consciously see it, rather your brain registers it and causes headaches, nausea etc.

I had the iPhone 11 Pro Max for 2 weeks and had a lot of eye strain and headaches. Turned it for the 11 and have been fine. Just switched carriers and got the 13 pro but returned it and decided to keep my 2 year old 11. I know there are tricks to keep brightness up and white point about 70% but still.
If they make another lcd phone I’ll buy it. OLED ain’t for me

Yep…I’m one of the 10 %. Just tried to switch from my 11 to a 13 pro. Within 10 mins I had to turn it off bc I felt like i was going blind. I’m back on my 11 now. Not sure what to do bc all the new iPhones are all oled screens.

Thank you for covering this! Nobody talks about it and it's a huge issue for those of us who are affected by PWM sensitivity. For me, I can always tell right away because I strugle to focus on the screen and keep focus. It's like when your camera is focus hunting but it's my eyes trying to lock focus on text. That leads to immediate eye strain and tension headache. I have a XR and I don't have any problems with viewing that screen at all. I've tried the iPhone 12, 13 and now 14 Pro and all have been returned to Apple because I can't handle the OLED screens. Each year I hope they changed something that will make it tolerable but they don't. So I'm still using my XR and hoping Apple keeps at least one phone in their lineup with LCD displays.
You forgot iPhone 1that it has the same weight and size compared with XR. But you will get an ultra-wide camera, 4GB ROM, and Bionic A13 CPU.

I noticed this while watching reviews of the Galaxy S23. Some cameras UA-camrs use have captured this flickering and it got me concerned. Even though I probably wouldn't notice this in actuality, I was afraid of how it could negatively affect my eyes without my knowing just like you mentioned.

Reading on (AM)OLED is good for short periods but not sustainable for longer. Color accuracy, sharp contrast and all that are absolutely true compared to an IPS LCD. Even if one does not see the flicker, yet it puts a strain on the eyes even using it for viewing in "dimmed" light at night for example. My choice for a new phone (Xiaomi Note 10 5G) with all its downsides compared to its other (Xiaomi Note 10 Pro) counterpart was only the screen technology. I regularly read books on my phone and AMOLED is just not for me. Thank you for this great presentation!

I have both of those phones, I've had zero issues wuth the SE3 but the 13 mini did give me headaches.

My OLED tv start giving me eyes strain and a terrible headache i tried to lower the Pixel brightness but with no results i can work with my phone for hours with no issues just the lg oled tv do that to me and i don't know how to fix that.

Mini-LED is a LCD based display tech. Many Mini-LED displays and FALD based displays also use PWM…just as an fyi. Usually at 960Hz on the TCL/Samsung panels.
E-ink might be the best option 😅

I just recently found out that my favorite daily-driver phone, the Samsung galaxy s20fe has PWM, and has been causing significant eyestrain> I'm currently looking to ditch my current phone in favor for one that uses some form of anti-flicker. I used to have the LG v60, and the G8 after that, and never had an issue.

Great Video. I have a iPhone 8 Plus and looking to upgrade. Went into the local OPTUS store (Australia) to check out the iPhone 13. Soon as I sat my phone next to the 13 it was like night and Day. I hated the new phones OLED screens. Not sure if it was the flickering but it didn't look as clear or as vibrant to my eyes. No idea if I am in the 10% or not. I use a 27inch 5K iMac which is LCD and it looks awesome. Having said that OPTUS have a special on for a brand new iPhone 11 at half price. I might go for that model as it uses a LCD display. I get what you mean but I like oled has been my favourite screen but I have other problems with other screens and the amoled display really hurts my eyes and gives me a headache and the LCD Hurts my eyes but not as much as the amoled everyone has different eyes but I am colour blind can't see some colours as good

@@TheHuski a oled is a better quality display with better colours and oled panel's emits less blue light its why the colours are off on the LCDs and oled has more sharpness of any given image its why most people likes a oled screen LCDs can get blocked or broke pixels but the oled screen while the oled only needs some pixels to lite up the screen but some people can see flickering in oled screens I can't but some can you can and you can mess with the screen colours on the settings and change the screen colour a bit to make it look more like a LCD that should help with the flickering and everyone have different eyes so it's why some people likes oled or amoled or LCD but lcd are only used on really cheap phones now or if a midrange phone are trying to cut price's down on a phone but I think people should have more of a option when it comes to a display so thay can have the phone thay won't with the display thay won't

I'm not PWM sensitive so I don't have any issues with OLED TVs. However I avoid LCD TVs at all costs because of the flickering. As someone with epilepsy the flickering is a nightmare.

It cannot be solved unless they turn off PWM flickering. But they wont, because if you turn it off, then OLED screen will tint, burn out and become unusable within a month of regular use. It such a great looking display, but doesnt last.
Hopefully in the future the individual pixel can be made with something that doesnt deteriorate so fast, so PWM can be turned off completely.
The flicker isn't constant it is more random but often right after i blink. It looks similar to the demonstration in the video. Usually it is more of a black flash but sometimes it is much faster than portrayed. I see similar effects with color wheel projectors, the image randomly splitting into green, red, blue. This effect also happens to a minority of people. I thought the screen was broken with a lose wire or bad GPU drivers lol
That's why I switched back to iPhone XR now. Even if you could choose a high PWM rate phone, like Hornor phones, it still has effects on your eyes but is still way better than the Samsung OLED screen. Luckily we still get some new LCD phones, you guys could check Redmi Note 11T pro / Redmi K50i India version.

It's true that I'm not one of the people affected by this problem, but it's clear that it's annoying to realize that the 2 biggest and richest smartphone manufacturers (Apple and Samsung) are the ones with the worst PMW, 300, especially when many other manufacturers already have screens that go up to 1900 PMW.
It hurt my eyes and made me feel dizzy, i had iphone 8 plus i was happy and comfortable with the display , when i bought 12 pro max i could not use it more than 5 min before i felt dizzy and nausea , returned to my 8 plus now .
I get terrible eye strain from oled. Not so bad on iPhone 12 but Samsung's screen on the 23 ultra is killing me. One plus ce 3 lite. Samsung A14, a Nokia? What's the best LCD phone at the moment?

Month into new OLED phone. Noticed on low bright if background is black and you move something like dark gray color, there is like purple ghosting, very noticeable if you move dark gray color very fast. I use dark mode btw.
What's your opinion about the LTPO OLED screens. Are those better than the original OLED???

Dark mode makes this much better, and there are other ‘tricks’ that lets you have the brightness on full without getting to bright. No dimming equals no PWM flickering.
google pixel phones with OLED -- like the 5, 6, and 7 - all give me eye strain immediately. Samsung galaxy's super AMOLED are completely comfortable to use. The AMOLED in my pixel 2 was also great. Thanks to Consumerism, we have a billion crappy panels being used to cut costs instead of ONE that is the BEST in ALL phones.

Hello. I am having a big problem in deciding on what iPhone to upgrade to after 6 years. I currently have the iPhone 6. Regular iPhone 13 which has PWM and OLED screen, I have never used before. Scared of effects or symptoms. Or normal iPhone 11. I don't really need the latest and greatest. Please advise? Thanks.

I just bought my first AMOLED phone 2 days ago and I was feeling super dizzy, nauseus, dry eyes and some migraines. I told this to my BF and at first he thought that I was crazy to think the phone is doing that to me... but after some research I finally found that I was right and explained to him that I was right and why and he finally understood and it's quite concerned with it. He's an Amoled user and never knew that this is an actual problem for a few people.
The flicking is not perceptible at eye it's only possible to see through a camera but your eyes are feeling it.
The store were I bought the phone don't accept phone returns. I just emailed them explaining that is a health issue and I hope they open an exception. Fingers crossed 🤞

@@Med-rb7lk Same as me. At first I tought that I was starting to have some eye problems, it was very difficult to focus and felt super dizzy too. But I was still transitioning between the old phone and the new one. And I didn't feel the same when I was using the old phone. That's when I started to think there was something wrong... I did some research on the AMOLED/OLED screens and found the reason for feeling that way. The problem now is that there aren't many recent phones with an IPS LCD screen anymore. All that are coming out on the market have AMOLED screens.

Dude thank you so much for covering this topic. I have the same nokia for years bc i cant update to a new phone. Hopefully they'll make changes soon. Have you found anything new that works?
