I purchased a new filter cap and it resolved the issue. I believe the filter cap that came with the car was the wrong cap. My filters were always crushed. So I purchased one that had the working spring action. Seemed like the correct one. No more crushed filters.

That's interesting. I've seen several collapsed on several cars.
      Thanks!

I see these partly collapsed cartridge filters on GM products a daily basis. I'm guessing the filter partially collapses when it was first installed, and torqued down, but I never bothered to verity it. The nipple (with the small o-ring) usually inserts into the engine fairly easily, but it's often very hard to get those filters seated in the oil filter cap perfectly straight, especially when you are in a hurry. Bad design, if you ask me, but I don't think it hurts the engine performance, or GM would have fixed it a long time ago. The fact that you have to wedge the filter into place when inserting it into the engine doesn't help matters. I think this problem gives a lot of people the wrong idea that the oil is too dirty, and is causing the filter to collapse. It's easy enough to test though, just put a new filter in there, run it a few miles, and then take it back out and inspect it. (You don't have to drain the oil to do that.) If the new filter is collapsed, then you can be sure it's either slightly oversized, or it was installed slightly crooked. I also wonder if the seating inside the cheap plastic oil filter housing cap wears open a bit over the years, allowing the filter to be inserted slightly crooked. Or maybe crud builds up in there on one side of the oil cap seat, a problem which is magnified by the tight tolerance. To test that you could try a new oil filter cap. If the filter doesn't fit into the cap perfectly straight, the tiny o-ring on the nipple might compress slightly on one side to help compensate for that. This collapsed filter situation shouldn't occur, but I honestly don't think it is doing any harm to the engine.

it's not too long it wasn't seated in the cap all the way! any one with experience with these caps and filters knows you have to seat it onto the cap all the way then install it into the engine!

A week ago I changed the oil and filter in my 15 Equinox 2.4L. I used a Fram Extra Guard filter for the first time. I noticed the filter leaned so bad in the cap that it wasnt seated properly in the housing. I worked with it until it was almost stright and I was able to tighten the oil filter cap without resistance. After watching this, I may replace the filter after a few hundred miles.

That’s what was wrong. And why they get crushed. People don’t insert them properly into the cap. So when they screw it down, it gets crushed then. Not during use.

you should change the oil way before 7400 miles no more like 4000

I don't remember a spring. I would check with your dealer and dig a little deeper.

My thoughts are how much oil is actually not going thru the filter, bypassing the collapsed side.I have seen this exact same problem on my 2010 Equinox 2.4l everytime I've changed the oil and filter usually @ 3000-3500 miles P.O.S. engine.

I found the lesser expensive filters tend to do this. I have removed them several times in the first 2k miles and they are not deformed. I suspect that due to fuel dilution, as high as 5-10% is breaking down the media along with the pressure differential. These engines are notorious for fuel dilution. I never go past 3k due to GDI soot and fuel dilution. Use a high quality synthetic filter, with wire mesh backing on the media. Fram Ultra, Purolator Boss, Wix XP, etc.

Hi Brian and thanks for watching and commenting!
On this vehicle the owner/driver took it to 0% on the OCI and I swear it was like a black ink.
The oil appeared to have sheared down to a water like viscosity.
I never try to get the last mile out of an OCI in my personal vehicles.
      Have a good one!

@@pmtips4482 Yep, black ink, just like diesel. GDI engines produce more soot than diesels these day. If they went the full distance, then it was probably 10 weight oil. I see my top of the line, 100% synthetic oil shear back to 20 weight after only 3k miles from fuel dilution. No additives can protect against that.

How do I get my oil filter canister off if it starts to come off crooked?

    • @pmtips4482
      @pmtips4482  3 роки тому

Melissa, once you start it off you should continue till it's completely off. Those are very thick and coarse threads on the plastic canister. If you plan on keeping the vehicle long term I would replace the OEM with a metal replacement canister, and if not, at least buy a new OEM in case your original is damaged.
Good luck and thank you for watching and commenting!

@@pmtips4482 yes I replace the oem cap every so often just to be safe. They are relatively cheap and worth it to avoid an issue

Put some God damn gloves on! According to the state of California engine oil causes cancer. 🤣

My filter (I have a car with the same engine), whenever I remove it, it always looks like this. Sometimes it’s more subtle than others. I use a mobile 1 filter.

the filter has to be fully seated into the cap before it is put into the engine and screwed down!

mmmm, made in korea, real good product... i wood NOT use a filter f/them again... maybe u should use AMSOIL products like i use & sell... hav a 2016 lexus nx200t... went 3 yrs, 2 months & 2 days, going 23,671 miles b4 changing... my filter looks like nu, mechanic joked & said we should use it again... LOL my filter was never that black... had oil tested, only real BAD part was it got a little thinner in viscosity... on other web sites damage like that was f/hi pressure, butt didn't know how that happens... wife & i also hav had several equinox's in our time & never had a prob like that... 1 m1 filter i saw on line where a guy took a brand nu filter & cut them open 2 see it had bin split open or never closed the seam/2gether... imagine putting a nu 1 on & never having full filtering ability... also, get oil TESTED so u can find out how bad it really is... after wut i did 2 that AMSOIL & filter, i wood not even think of any other oil on the market 2 use...

You're also driving a Toyota. Huge difference. These 2.4 Ecotecs are GDI junk and will never make that long of intervals without breakage of the timing chain guides and sludging up the phaser solenoids.
