The Cleaver is a 5.13b offwidth climb in Day Canyon, which was equipped and first tried by Evan Wisheropp. Evan kindly told us about and let us try the project in November 2023. 4 ascents of the route were then made by Pete Whittaker, Tom Randall, Mari Salvesen and Mary Eden. A big thanks must go to Evan for sharing the information and having the vision for the climb. Thanks also to Tendon Ropes for supporting the video
Ok, sorry/not-sorry for blasting you with so many comments as I watch. This is incredible to watch! Mary had 1000% the exact beta I was using. That’s very validating. lol but yeah I need to try Tom’s beta. Who’s joining me this spring?!
I've never watched a Wide Boyz video I didn't love, but this is one of my favorites. I really enjoyed the split screen, which helped me see how Mary and Tom's techniques varied at crucial points. Tom's 'tache is better than Mary's, but Mary's core strength and absolute control is stunning. I'm convinced that she has 36 pack abs. And let's not even get into the fact that young Pete flashed this, and that Mari sent also. Four of the finest crack climbers of their generation doing what they do best. I love it!
@@kwvh I've seen that so many times before! I want to know if that helps him with the nerves or something. Makes him look so cool despite the colorful socks and all :D
😂 The back and forth between Mary and Tom nearing the top, is quite the collection of guttural sounds and sandy dry heaving. 😂 Nice work wrestling the beautiful rock.
I think a wide Boyz dictionary is necessary. What are flying pirates and inverted torpedoes? I've been following this channel for years and I think that's the first time I've heard those terms!
I root for this! Maybe a quick video with 100 most common crack techniques, or they can try to publish a Wideboyz - normal climber dictionary in the newsletter / their website 🙏 @wide boyz
A flying pirate is like a half-whippled togglepull, but without the snare. An inverted torpedo is a regular torpedo but you grist your reflect inside the pyramid instead if outside.
My togglepulls are de-snared as a matter of principle but not whippling fully is going to take some practice. Need to work on my gristing. Thanks Peter for the clarifications.@@PeterTeal77
Incredible climb and well shot & edited video. Remarkable the strength, but even more crazy the technique and effort that seems you have to put in to climb something like this. Well done Tom and Mary. And insane to know that Pete did flash it.
Man, beautiful video, and amazing climbing. As a Utahn, I would love to run into you guys one day. Pete and Tom are the reason I crack climb! Killer effort, Tom, and great climbing from Mary!
No human should ever be able to climb something like this. Just beyond impressive. You guys' desire to constantly push yourselves to the absolute limit is incredible to watch every time. Awesome climb.
Some choice grunting from both. I was smiling away watching you both try hard and felt the need to turn the sound down in case my wife passed by my office.
gosh what an amazing climb. I think i caught the clip of Mari sending this on her insta, it looks absolutely killer every time. such a good offwidth wow. awesome video guys
Dude you guys are sooo good at the offwidth style of climbing, I haven't ever tried it out but love watching you guys move like that with such intense grueling yet technical movements, its really fucking cool :) Please stay safe and thank you for your awesome videos
Absolute great video and amazing ascent. And at the end of that climb even a well trained and experienced orthopedic doctor would NOT be able to tell if you were crack climbing or if you were run over by a big old school bus twice.
I like how you placed the gear lower but clipped it when it was at your waist; thus avoiding the rope getting in the wsy of the jams; and reducing the possible length of a fall. Something many climbers fail to do.
Great video, that's a lot of grunting with Mary. You are going to have to rename the channel Wide boyz and Girlz. Mary is a great addition to the video.
When I see these kinds of cracks I just imagine the entire mountainside popping off when the climber presses too hard. (Wont happen anywhere but in my head)
@@sebastianflynn1746I'm not saying you're wrong, but a hold broke off like a foot below it _in this video_ so I still don't know if I'd be ready and eager to trust it tbh
I've been thinking of the 9.7 version of that same role, has the same sheath and from memory a softer catch than the 9.4 - and I'm too old an fat now to need a skinny rope anyway.
@0:14 you wear socks like this when: you're one of those "type 2 fun" nutters, just off kilter enough to climb stuff like this bunched-up-nightmare-stressfest-climbing-mess you see before you ;). Cheers Wide Boyz

Easy
I'd love to see any more footage you have from Pete's flash
I'm going to order one of those ropes. That climb is rough on the rope!
Tom while climbing - ( sounds like he's getting his guts ripped out...)
Tom once he clips the chains - " I got pumped" 😂
Poor Mary’s coughs of ‘oh god please don’t puke’ were sooooo relatable. Good on y’all, this line is insane.
Been there also

I will
DUDE! At 2:49, the cam slip, I had my cam slide 5” when I fell there! Spooky!!
Sick discovery dude!
Thanks for sharing the crack with the Brits! 🤟
Close your eyes and watch this video.. it’s a whole different concept
Amazing video! I love the side-by-sides!

Tom with that tash and socks may be bringing in a new fan base to wideboyz soon... just foolin tho he actually wears it well.
It's a look...for sure 😂

Pete has written a book about that already
Totally with you on this. Heard of the angry pirate (finish) but not the flying!

Loved the side-by-side storytelling! Amazing video, and amazing climb of course.
Good old flying pirate turning from an invert torpedo

I bumped into Pete in Moab a couple months ago. Super nice guy
No human should ever be able to climb something like this. Just beyond impressive. You guys' desire to constantly push yourselves to the absolute limit is incredible to watch every time. Awesome climb.
Excellent videos, lads, really top rate. I'll echo what others have said - the side by side comparisons was awesome. More of the same, please.
I love how although you're all very talented, it's always primarily about the effort.
My neighbours probably think I watch another kind of movie. 👀💦
The noises made me pitch a tent 😮
Aw my missis youst to keep asking what am I watching thinking it was something else
That looks incredibly difficult great video lads. I enjoyed every minute
i love the socks
I love the interleaved send video snippets, that's a really good style of video! Awesome climbing as always of course.
Some choice grunting from both. I was smiling away watching you both try hard and felt the need to turn the sound down in case my wife passed by my office.
The side-by-side shots were so cool! Absolutely grueling route.
I enjoyed this a lot. Kudos to the ability to push yourself like that

Amazing! When are we going to see Petes flash?
Day Canyon is awesome! Great to see you there!
Love the editing on this, the alternating shots showing the different techniques was really interesting

Great split screen and the audio giving a real feel of the level of difficulty. Great effort!
Love the side by side editing on this, really cool way to show it
Gads, Mary has so much power!
This is such a cool side by side presentation. Great video, great climbing
Absolute great video and amazing ascent. And at the end of that climb even a well trained and experienced orthopedic doctor would NOT be able to tell if you were crack climbing or if you were run over by a big old school bus twice.
Lmao
Amazing how different both betas were

Something many climbers fail to do.
Go on Mary! Smashed it!
Dear Wideboyz,
Great video and great videos ! How about climbing with Janja Garnbret ?? :)
I love how the bluesy piano music fits them grinding out these tough sequences
you lot always make me want to try trad climbing
When that cam moved on Tom for just a second we saw some humanity from these monsters
I love to see some more tom content (tomtent) back on this channel. Proper fight mate!
More on it's way!
...oh my god, I was out of breath just watching that! Top vid and well done you two! 🤩💪
1:11 will be my new text ringtone
😂
good to see some stashes still around
What a cool change over that lip makes.
The raw effort here is awesome
Y'all killed this. Good effort!
Incredible effort from the both of you!
Wow Oo incredible, love that!! Respects! If only we had such beautiful cracks in France.
Such a nice line!
Brilliant! What a climb u 2 🤙
Absolutely amazing effort both of you!
Always enjoyable to see the pain and agony that goes with crack
Showing the different ways y'all climbed this was rad. I'd love to see how Pete did it as well.
Kings and queens of crack climbing.Bravo!

Nice!
Amazing!
wow, a proper fight! good job Tom and Mary
This is gonna trigger a night mare for sure, ty!!
Absolutely epic and savage sending, congrats to both Tom and Mary!!
Did I miss Pete and Mari's sends, or if not is that footage coming soon?
No footage of Mari's send. Only photos of Pete's. So this is all from this route 👍
@@WideBoyz well it was still glorious to watch! Thanks!
nice video with the editing and filming
Respect! What a fight
Hell yeah, Tom!
Tom keeping it clean and not using the bolt, well done!
I like her protection better. Which for my mind would allow me to overgrip/ use too much power/ energy on moves.
Congratulations to all
Great stuff!
Good effort❤💪
Insane!
what an awesome mustache, Tom!
Tom's outfit is so 60s climber, just needs a flat cap and a wool jumper.
Great video! By the way, will the Wide Boyz ever return to the Crucifix?
Watching Mary just rest casually in that chicken wing. . . man I wish I was half that good.
BTW, loved the editing on this one! Great side-by-sides.
Brilliant, everything. Nothing else to say.
Fantastic ! I have a gear question: what kind of kneepads are you using here Tom and how do they not slip down your trousers ?
Wide Boyz kneepad, coming soon
I'll look it up then !
Amazing! I konow you are good but you are, excuse me, a damn good climbers! Chapeau bas!
There were like 5 times I was SURE Mary was coming out. What a beast.
Nice videos. you re all amazing. just a question, is the helmet optional? Be carefull.
BRVTAL!!
When I see these kinds of cracks I just imagine the entire mountainside popping off when the climber presses too hard. (Wont happen anywhere but in my head)
I laybacked every offwidth and squeeze chimney I could starting in the 60s. In America.
But you are right most American climbers didn't.
The power of Movember!! Epic lad!!
not gonna lie: I love this full-effort climbs
Niiiiiiice!
Am I missing something, or are those expansion bolts? In _crumbly Utah sandstone?_
The creek has mostly good sandstone, it's not all fisher towers.

General curiosity. Is there a standard for how thick tape gloves can be before it's considered aid?
Holy shit Tom you're a beast!
Tom has a sense of style
Good to see @tradprincess climbing with you again, comparison shots were awesome. And that double chicken wing "rest" 🤌🫴
This video made me get out of bed and start doing pull ups
Anyone know what the music is at 0:45 ?
Obvious statement, but holy cow that corner looked absolutely brutal. You guys are absolute units!
Man, Tom's face when that cam slipped... Need a change of pants after that lol
how long are your climbing trips that going through more than one rope is a concern?
