- This channel is to help people make an informed choice on one of hundreds of varieties of Japanese maples. The spelling of each variety is under each clip of tree.,
This is set in a small Japanese themed English garden.
In Bedfordshire UK .April 2020.
More films will follow as I have 50 varieties all with different characteristics ,with its name and not just under the heading ,Japanese maple.
Thank you for sharing, Terry. What a clever idea. I have not heard of submerging pots in the ground. I have lost acers in pots over the winter, due to them becoming waterlogged. I now grow them directly in the soil, with better success.

Terence, what a gorgeous collection of trees you have. There is just something bewitching about Japanese maples, I find them irresistible myself and now have about twenty, accumulated over the last three years or so .I find that I am learning by trial and error, and appreciate videos like yours and the comments and advice that follow on. I have had some pruning disasters, certainly! I am intrigued by the subject of root pruning which I do not yet have courage to attempt for fear of murdering the poor tree. Most enjoyable, thankyou!
Hello Martin, thanks for your kind comments. i have quite a lot of root pruning to do in the new year so i may film one or two and add it to my next UA-cam movie.

I took some JM cuttings on 30th March and got some lovely little plants now. I've even made a new video on their progress so far. I am now thinking about the coming winter and surviving the cold to then wake up in bud the following spring. I plan to keep them in my mini greenhouse which is in my old aviary with a vine plant growing over it. If it gets very cold, I'll cover them a little further within the greenhouse to be safe. Your Acers look fantastic! Mine have a very long way to go. I do have a 22 year old Sycamore Maple which my Dad gave to me as a sapling, this is doing really well now, I pruned it back a little this year and it's growing back well.

I keep a written diary at the moment on each plant on things such as repotting or repositioning etc but your idea of logging some of it as i film is a good one .
As soon as ive worked out the best way how to present it i will add it to the videos.

@@nayanmistry4641 HI Nayan, no just by adding the extra ericaceous compost I thought would be enough . I then add a feed in the spring .

Thanks Miguel , i do have a small Sango Kaku but it looks a little bit tatty at the moment, but when I've got it settled down i will take some pictures of it .You are right though they are a great addition to any garden.

Thanks for your comment, . Our winters are not to bad (South East England) . We do get frosty days and most years get about 2 weeks of snow.
All the trees in containers above ground i huddle together and protect them from the wind. All those in the ground i do nothing.

Lovely trees , you can get them in red, green and bronze . With most of them turning red in the fall . Most Dissectums will grow to 2 to 4 M , a few are dwarf 1to 2m and several varieties will reach 6M . So you have great choice, happy hunting ,and thanks for your comment.

@@ssal4699 Hi Sak , although officially the 3 types of colour groups are Red, Green and Verigated. You obviously get Burgandy ones which come under the red group , yellow which come under the green , also orange which could be any . If there was a specific group for Bronze i would put Ornatum, Toyama,Emma, Bronzewing and Heartbeat which are all a Bronze colour during the summer. You will find these all under the Red grouping.
I only have Emma which is lovely and Ornatum but i am sure there are more it also depends on how much sunlight they get , i hope that is of some help .

Hi Ksenial, the red one you are reffering too is a Atropurpureum, also known as Blood good or Blood Leaf . i have 2 the other one is shown at the end of the video. I hope this helps and thank you for the comments. Terry

i planted one of my trees and i felt it was water logged so i potted it
i dunno if with clay soil id have to dig a bigger hole under the pot filled with pea gravel too so i just have them sit on my decking
That is the best way, it all depends how you want the garden to look like . The gravel idea is only a solution to those that want a natural look.

Good Morning Ron,
Its a south facing garden so it gets a lot of sun in the summer. Fortunately my neighbours have very tall trees surrounding the perimeter of my yard so this helps shade them part of the day. I do have a problem with scorch sometimes, it's a case of moving the trees around to see which ones can tolerate the sunnier spots. Thats another case for keeping them in containers . Once I've found their happy place I bury the container in the ground. I try and give a 5foot spacing . I know the trees will not grow to their full potential but I don't have the space or soil conditions to plant them directly in the ground . I lift the containers every 3/to 4 years to change the soil and trim the roots and in some cases put them in a bigger pot.
So really mine are like large Bonsai.

I love your maple garden. A beginner of maple grower in pots started this year. I have 4 very young plants. When can you start to prune them and repot them to keep them small?

It all depends on how you want the tree to look like. I have found that if I repot a plant (even a seedling) its best to go up in small stages . I prune any stringy shoots off at any time ,so that the tree does not put energy into branches I don't like. As for the roots I don't prune these until the tree has reached a size that I would like the tree to stay . may be a little and straighten out any circular roots each repot but not drastic unless you want to Bonsai and the best person for that info is Peter Chan at Herons Bonsai.
When I buy a new tree I repot it straight away . I hope this helps, sorry about the delay in replying.

Thanks for that Terence very helpful im just in the process of taking a couple of shrubs out and definitely going to put maples in as I have one in another part of the garden . Just to decide which variety to choose I don’t have a lot of room so could I prune the maples to keep them to the size I want . Many thanks

yes David i prune the branches of mine regularly and the roots every 3to 6 years . i treat them like large bonsai.

Terry can you share what kind of pot you plant them in and if prep the pot in some way like more drainage holes etc. Like the idea.

I am an UK maple enthusiast aswell . I would love to put my potted maples on the ground like you did ( it looks great , protects from cold , helps controling grouth and root spread all keeping the trees mobile at the same time ) but I wonder how this will affect the drainage .

I drill at least 4 holes in the bottom of the container, all depending on the size of the container. More on bigger pots, 15mm diameter each hole.
Then I put 50 mm of 20mm gravel or hard stones in the bottom of the container.
Then i mixture a soil of 60% peat compost 20% Sharp sand and 20% potting gravel.

@@terencemorgan6714 and how do you handle moving the plants when the roots have grown through the holes in the bottom of the pot, especially when it is one of the large roots? Also what is the pot material...plastic, terra-cotta or something else? Thanks for sharing so much with us.

Hellow , the pots are a rubberised plastic which i drill my own 20mm hols in . if the roots are starting or have grown through any of them it is time to repot it and i just cut them off flush with the pot . You would usually do a litte root pruning anyway when you repot a tree.

Yes i do , it has been a hard winter this year with the soil beeing frozen solid for a couple of weeks and the frosty mornings still contiuing in the second week of May. The smaller ones i did cover with fleece tunnels . I have been caught out with these late frosts which has damaged a number of the early budders . If your soil is good put them directly in the ground.

I picked up three acers yesterday that I've put into the largest pots that I could find. They were:-
1) Red Garnet (but mine says max height 1.5m) ?
2) Little Princess
3) Wilsons Pink Dwarf
and I'm looking at two sango-kaku for the back of my garden to the rear
Hi they sound very nice , but it's not always wise to put them in the largest container. They respond better if you gradually increase the size over a number of years in containers with lots of drainage holes . The soil should be free drainage and contain lots of mini pine bark .
Yes your Red Garnet is correct although some books says they grow to 3 to 4 Mtr Mine is over 30years old and is wider than it is tall, probably 1 Metre.
Your JM's are so beautiful. I have a collection of JM's, but I was just wondering why your JM's are okay to be exposed in the sun? My Bloodgoods (7 years old) in pots have always been on the side of the house with an Umbrella :) over them because their leaves burn from the heat of the sun. My Crimson Queens, Japanese Red Maples are always on the shaded side corner of my house. The only JM exposed to heat is my Orangeola and Seiryu. How come your JM's are so beautiful without shade. Are these the Heat Tolerant JM's? Thank you......

Thanks for your comments but no mine are not heat tolerant and some times I do get leaf scorch.
When in doubt keeping them in semi shade is always the best option. It sounds to me you are doing the right things.

Yes i do , so most of my Maples are like large Bonsia as i don't have the space to let them grow to there full size.
I do show this on 2 videos , one called Japanese Maples Soil Issues . The other is Japanese Maple Repotting .These show how i root trim in the winter. As regards pruning i do it any time if i see a crossing , untidy or dead branch.

@@terencemorgan6714 cheers for getting back in touch Terry. All my maples are in containers, because my garden is in full sun nearly all day with very little shade. Which means I can move them easily when needed. So will need to root prune eventually. Any idea Terry how many trees you have. At moment I have 6 red and also 6 green varietys. Terry you haven't already you must get a corallinum, these trees are stunning. Reason I ask, I've never heard you mention one in your videos. Any idea when you will do another video. I can I ask where you roughly live, I'm near Coventry. If passing hit me up and pop in for a beer and chat.

No i have not got a Corallinum in my collection but the hunt is on now you have recommended having one.
I have approximately 50 trees but some varietys i have 2 or more off and some are very small saplings.
I have taken some film this spring and should strart editing it soon . My house is in Bedfordshire so not too fare.

@@terencemorgan6714 Terry if you have any problems getting your hands on a corallinum, get in touch. I don't think it will be a problem getting one. The chap I deal with only has 4 thousand trees of different varieties. Look forward to your next video, and try and keep cool.
Hi Keith, thanks for the information as regards planters it made me investigate the treated wood which I have used to construct the ones I have just made . I had lined them with black dpc plastic anyway and that seems to be the best thing to do.
As regards some of the other trees which require lifting and root pruning, I will asses them once I see the condition of the root ball. would you recommend this to be carried out at the end of January ?
The shed I made nearly 2 years ago, it’s a bit of an illusion as it’s only a corner triangular one. I am a carpenter by trade so that helps.

Hi Serlly, although I am in the uk I think our south climate in winter is close to your zone 5. I find if the roots are below ground and not in a container above ground , then they survive the frost . What they need protecting from is the harsh winds, this is the killer . So all depending on the size of the plants . if they are in containers above ground I gather them altogether in a corner and place straw bails or anything to stop the wind directly blowing onto them , but I do not cover them up. The trees planted in the ground , if they are less than 3ft and are of a less hardy variety I would loosely wrap in a light fleece but only when necessary. I hope this helps .Kind Regards T.M.Morgan

Hello mate I’m trying to find a acer atropurpureum bloodleaf to buy but with no success. Is bloodleaf the same as bloodgood?
Hi Jonny , it all depends on who you talk too, but yes some nurseries just call them Atropurpureum. the difference is one you can grow from seed the other is grafted.but they are the same. in most other ways so yes buy a Bloodgood and you will not be disappointed . ....................................
Hi Terry are you maples mainly in shade. I have a south facing garden so not sure if my maples will be exposed to too much sun.

I have a south facing garden too but as you can see on the video it is surrounded by a fence and the nieghbours high trees , this helps.
The ones that do not get much shade do struggle but again some are tolerant of the sun. Ellen, Garnet ,Enken and Red Feathers have all done well from my experience.

I’m well impressed on your garden you mentioned trimming the roots? Wouldn’t just leaving them in small pots do the same as trimming?
NO they will end up chocking themselves and no room for fresh soil . you can use the same pot size for ever but like a Bonsia you have to give it room to feed and breath.

Good Morning Michael, As most Japanese maples are cultivars ( grafted from 2 different varieties) you will not get a true variety from seed. You will get a true variety from a cutting or air layering from a known specimen . They are expensive because they are usually grafted and the end result of a small tree you buy in nursery has taken 3to 4 years to produce .
I have found a good supplier with many varieties at various different sizes is: Barthelemy & Co, 262 Wimborne Road, W. Stapehill, Near Bournmouth. BH21 2DZ They do have a website .

how to handle red maple after pruning & root cutting? does it have to be covered?
Hi Keith, no i do not cover after pruning or root cutting. If you have seen my UA-cam film titled , Japanese Maple soil issues.
It shows how i repotted a 5ft tall Bloodleaf in December with quite a sever root trimming. I also did the same to several of my other medium sized maples including my Enkan in the same week. All have survived , which i will show in my next film.

i have 11 acer now and i think 10 conifer all in pots i was thinking about trying to grow them like yours and keep them small but that end tree i have 4 of will they all grow to 2m even in a pot?
All depends on how big the containers are and if you trim the roots.

its in like a 40liter pot roots dont touch the sides yet :)

Hi Terence, nice trees, but I think you'll run into problems by burying your pots in the ground, for the fact your immediately cutting off oxygen for the rootball, as you'll have seen an Acer in a pot grows it's roots to the sides and base of pot, to get oxygen, do a healthy potted Acer requires a good balance of moisture and oxygen, so a pot in the ground the tree isn't getting that, nevermind the other factor of drainage, a lot has only so many holes in its base, on hard ground that will drain fine, in the ground those pots will hold water much longer, and possibly at times no drain at all, and Acer's do not like being waterlogged, and again you'll run into problems.
If your on Facebook, if you don't believe me, search groups for Acer Trees Japanese Maples, and hear the professionals and very experienced Acer keepers on disadvantages of this subject on burying pots in the ground, best regards
Hi Keith, you have some valid points and I have been thinking that once I have found the position of each tree where they are comfortable , ie sun and wind. I ought to plant them in the ground. Which i will next year as most of my plants are due a soil change and trim.
Some of the larger trees, { not that any of my trees are very big} i have decided to transfer into large wooden containers (800mm x 800mm ) which will not be buried but will be part of the ornamental ,oriental feel. I am in the process of making those at the moment and hope to show the new layout next spring and explain why i have done so. You are right though , and you never stop learning but we have to try these different things to learn what suits our conditions the most. Mine was driven by the natural condition of my soil is solid chalk . I have had most of the specimen plants for 17years plus so it can't be all bad. I do appreciate you taking the time to point this out and i am going to take your advice in the new year, as it would be upsetting to loose any of the trees. @@terencemorgan6714 no worries Terence, 17 years is a long time, were those trees standing on concrete or sunk in the ground? We have heavy clay here in South Shields, and a lot of folk like ourselves have poor soil, mound planting helps a lot of folk overcome this, and also the benefits of back planting with the native soil is beneficial compared to just adding compost to the whole hole, thats scientifically been studied and good to know. We see this now and again in our group where folk ask why their tree is struggling or dying, once the pot has been spotted, and some have been like this for years, root prune and replanting or potting up, much better health is noted, only this morning a nursery woman realised a Acer they planted in a display border 10 years ago has been struggling, they dug it up, forgot they planted it its pot back then, very pot bound, so they have corrected and planted obviously without the pot and hope spring sees improvement, we have a very experienced member in America who out there they use specially designed root pouches which are designed as your using the pots for.
Raised beds too can be problematic, and use of planters, though I can't remember much on problems discussed on this.
It's good to try trees in a spot for a year or two before planting, and like yourself we are all learning, and luckily we are blessed by our group by having some of the most experienced and many professional Acer specialists from around the world share their knowledge, so we can avoid mistakes on our own, and of course others not following our mistakes too.
It was a good friend in the group who shared your video this morning that the topic of the pots/ground started, you've got some beautiful trees, and stunning garden, I particularly love your Japanese shed/summerhouse, that really is the icing on the cake there.
