What are Japanese Maples?
Also known as an acer palmatum, Japanese Maples are beautiful, ornamental, deciduous trees that come in a variety of colors and shapes. They feature red, spiked foliage and grow to about 10-20 feet tall.
Where do Japanese Maples Grow?
Japanese Maples are non-natives to the United States-they originated in Japan, the Korean Peninsula and China, and enjoy being planted in partial shade and grow in zones 5-8. [planthardiness.ars.usda.gov/P...]
How to Prune Japanese Maples
Once these trees are matured, which typically takes about 10 to 15 years, they should be pruned every few years, usually in the summer or middle of winter. Jenn demonstrates the three-cut method for pruning branches:
1. To prune, aim for the lower branches on the tree that seem to be tangled with other branches, or any dead branches.
2. Remove smaller branches with bypass pruners. For larger branches, start by making a relief cut from underneath, then cut the branch all the way through from the top.
3. Carefully cut away the stump once the weight of the branch has been removed using a pruning saw.
With little-to-no maintenance, Japanese Maples are the perfect way to add character to your landscape.

Red Japanese maple is the most elegant plant I’ve ever seen .. it’s so magnificent
My favorite trees! I was given a small (Red) J. Maple 🍁 by a friend when I bought my first house. Long story short, it’s been 30yrs, I’m living in my FOURTH house and I’ve transplanted that same tree from house to house. Keeping it well trimmed is what allowed me to move it. It’s now in its final resting spot & growing quite well.

I love the fact that my grandma has plants are growing in all her kids and grandkids yard. 20 years we still have a piece of her that lives on. I want to do the same with my mother and her japanese maple. Its my favorite tree.

I installed the Tension-En Garden at the museum of Fine Arts in 1988. Was a dream job and we installed many Acer Palmatum. Great video.
I have been thinking about a japanese maple tree for a few years, but what holds me back is the growing process. I have heard on many occasions that they are hard to care for and your soil has to be right!
There are tons of acer shirasawanum and acer japanicom that would easily fall under the style of “Japanese maple”. Even some of the more vibrant vine maples (acer circinatum) like Sunny Sister or Pacific Fire would count.
I got into water gardens and gardening in San Jose CA with a climate that was almost OK for a Japanese garden. Then I moved to Phoenix where I fell in love with Japanese gardens, but an almost impossible climate. But I have been able to create a pretty fair Japanese garden by substituting species. But I so want a more traditional Japanese garden I'm looking to move again and this time I will focus on getting the climate right. This little video clip reminded again...oh I so want that. Thanks.

This is a wonderfully done video... I would've loved to have learned a little bit more about the care for them, transplanting them at their various life stages (do's and don'ts) and maybe to have thrown up a map of the zones in mention for where they'd grow best.

I just planted 4 miniature Japanese maples in front of 5 Alaskan Weeping Cedar trees to contrast their dark green color with the red of the maples. I only hope the maples do well near them. I’m now concerned about acidity. My soil was heavy clay and not that fit so I put down about a foot of mushroom manure and topsoil mixture over a 70 foot by 15 foot strip. Then for each tree dug down 2.5 -3 feet and mixed in a bag of cow manure and pete mixture with the clay soil then topped the bulb off and mounded with the mushroom manure and topsoil mix. I hope all my new trees make it. It was one heck of an “investment”! Id be interested to hear your thoughts.

This video says they can be grown in zones 5-8, but the area i live is zone 9b and i have two imperial Japanese maples in my front yard and a bloodgood Japanese maple in my backyard and see all kinds of other different varieties in the neighborhoods around where i live. I'm not trying to call you guys out or anything just a friendly little note that it is possible to have them in zone 9 for any gardeners out there that may want them but live in zone 9.

Do it! A lot of verities don't get too big, so you could easily fit many into any sized yard.
I just moved into a new house that happened to have a red one in the backyard! It's small right now, maybe 6ft tall but still looks amazing.

My Japanese Maple got hit by a sudden Hailstorm a week ago. Most of the tree's foliage survived, but there are a couple of places that suffered. Can you tell me how to treat it.
We have one that grew wild looking and pruning it never changed. We ended up cutting it down and now it has started back. It is about 4 inch tall and very healthy looking but being that small how do I protect it from winter
Hi Mike! Thank you so much for your video-I have a question. I have a Red Leaf Japanese Maple Tree and I live in Zone 9. (Deep South Texas) The tips of the leaves of my Japanese Tree are getting scorched. Some people recommend me to move it to a shade location (it gets direct sunlight from morning until 6pm) to avoid scorching. What would you recommend to avoid scorching and at the same time having red leaves? Thanks in advance !
More than likely its from the frost in the morning , especially early to mid spring. Cold nights can produce frost and when the frost sets on the leaves in the morning the suns burns the leaves. The solution that works the best is to go out in the morning before the sun comes up and hose them down (spray water on them). This will get the frost off to prevent the leave burning. Hope this helps
Could they survive in Florida, perhaps in a shaded protected area? I have 8 of them in my house Chicago but moving to FL, so was considering taking a couple currently planted in containers.
Can I plant a Japanese maple in a container and then submerge/bury the container (with the tree in it) in the ground? The reason for this is because my HOA requires one tree to be planted in the ground (front of house), not exposed pots, and I wanted to keep my tree small and slow growth, without roots spreading underground massively and affecting my home foundation.
It is a very nice tree, but it's a very slow growth tree.
If you don't have the time, as in many years to wait for full growth, buying a large tree can be a very expensive thing to do.
I found out that while the tree is young, like several years old or older, they really don't like direct sunlight, especially the hot summers here in So Cal.

Hello, I have a Coral Bark Japanese maple tree. The tree is planted in the ground, somehow, it is not doing too well, the leaves as slowly dying, especially at the top of the tree and working its way down. I've checked the ph level and it is registering 7.-8. Based on some of the research I've done thus far, I need to reduce the Ph level to 5.5-6.5. Can you confirm? Also, what would be the ideal fertilizer for this particular tree? I've heard people said Happy Frog Japanese Maple 4-3-4 is good. Thanking you in advance. LV

There is hardly any shade where I live. Is that going to be a problem? What do I do?
I fell in love with this thing ones I was working near the Wasatch mountains in Utah. But there were tons of mountains of big oaks all around providing shade.

Honestly you could maybe find a different maple because it definitely wouldn’t live with huge trees, also Japanese maples can be invasive to native grasses in fields so I just wouldn’t get it

Hey Jenn, our Parish has a Japanese Maple and I have been taking care of it. I noticed that it is not producing seeds, and the red color changed in the summer time? I am learning about this tree, even to to propagate it for future growth.

I wish there was a Japanese Maple for zone 4 almost zone 3. People are always surprised when they find out I have had a Magnolia Jane for about 10 years.
I’m in zone 3, I’ve planted a Korean maple and a north wind maple. The north wind is from Iseli’s Jack Frost collection. They are both doing very well. I did put mulch down and wrap the base with burlap in the winter for the first few years. While they are not Japanese Maples they are in the same family and do well in Zone 3. Happy planting!

Is a Red Maple the same thing as a Japanese Maple or is that something different?
Different. The red maple is a common name and can't be trusted. Use the latin botanical name for utmost accuracy.
Red Maple = Acer rubrum
Japanese Maple = Acer palmatum
Then there is the crazy Norway Maple (Royal Red or Crimson King cultivars) they too have red/purple leaves.
Norway Maple = Acer platanoides

Beautiful trees, but I think it would be a stretch growing then in a 9b like New Orleans. Will have to stick to silver maples.
From what I've been reading on trimming and maintenance of a red Japanese Maple tree that was bought and planted in the middle of our front yard under the glowing hot sun with no shade til later afternoon/evening. It has been in ground be 2 years this October. has been mulched too close to trunk at ground level for past 1-1/2 years and late last Fall (2023) I trimmed a lot of dead thin tiny twig from it and it did look better. This year it has leafed out beautifully but starting at ground level on up the trunk, etc a lot of new leaves sprouted out alone the way. A few dead twig like branches up through top of tree. Tree looks like it's gotten shorter. should I wait til summer to trim/prune - no mulching close to trunk (mulching last Fall laid thick and heavy up to trunk. Been told should mulch should not be right up onto the trunk???? HELP if you can.......Mary A Oh yes, in in SW Ohio.

I would love to grow a Japanese maple in my front garden bed, but it receives too much sun, and I'm afraid it wouldn't thrive under those conditions.
Bloodgood or Shantung, would be your best bets. I have a 2 Shantung 'Fire Dragon' in full all day sun in Texas heat and they are doing fine. Green in spring, then beautiful yellow, orange, and red in the fall.
I like her gentle slopes. 😊

My dwarf Japanese Maple just started dying and I'm not sure why the branches started to turn green and the leaves just started dying. What went wrong?
Mine did that - it had too much sun. It was planed on the south facing part of the house

No
Not all Japanese maples are acer palmatum, including the one seen at 0:36, and many do not have palmate leaves, as one can see throughout this video. But at least she got the country of origin correct.
Japanese Maples are native to. . . Japan. Wait. What?
Well Pinus nigra or Black Pine has the word nigra for Nigerian black people of Africa.
But it is native to the mediterranean mostly in Turkey and Austria, so there are some tricky ones out there.

What can i do for a Japanese maple that leaves are scorched but is still alive?
It's getting too much sun, most varieties cannot tolerate afternoon sun. Additionally it could just need more water, especially as it gets hotter in the late summer.
@@michaelnelson2474 so will.it recover if I shade it ? Should I remove scorched leaves. Please help. Really hope to save it.
@@kylaupshaw3973 no need to remove the leaves. Depending how bad it is, it can recover but the burnt leaves may stay for for the entire summer.

It will really come down where you live and which cultivar it is. Generally, the main culprit will be excessive wind and lack of water. Many people will tell you they need shade, but that isn't strictly true. In fact to get good autumn colour, many will require to be in full sun.
I've found the dissected green varieties like a bit more shade and can burn easily, while the fuller leaved ones, or anything with a red leaf prefers more sun. Many red leaved maples really need full sun to keep their colour over summer.
It might look a bit sad over the next spring/summer (I'm guessing your in northern hemisphere), but come autumn it will defoliate and should be fine.
I like to watch This Old House for the vast knowledge to learn, however there was enough incorrect facts about Japanese Maples that made it obvious, she really didn't know much about Japanese Maples. For example, 0:30 she says "they are all called acer palmatum", this is completely wrong. In fact the next tree shown is an acer shirasawanum. Additionally Japanese Maples have various zone ranges by species and vastly different sun tolerances and needs.

Don't plant them in full sun on the south side or they don't turn red. They get stressed and stay green. Also never move them in the summer.
I had 2 regular American maple trees leaning on my gutters. It cost hundreds of dollars to remove. Larger trees can cost 1000s to remove. Never plant large trees near your foundation The large roots could ruin your plumbing too. Japanese maples come in perfect sizes. Do not plant small Japanese maples next to the road because some masked bandit will pluck them out of the ground.

Wow, she is so aggressive with the pruning shears! OMG, I nearly fainted. It was traumatic to watch. I really learned so much, that Japanese maples actually do come from Japan! Who would have guessed! Really, this old house was so helpful. Really a pretty poor video, considering it was supposed to be educational.
