Japanese Maple Tree Garden

These video clips were taken whilst making our Japanese themed garden . As I was a carpenter with an unhealthy passion for Japanese Maples, it was only logical that I designed and built this small corner shed to store my pots and tools. The maples I had were in the front garden for about 15 years before I transferred them to this purpose built back garden.

This channel is to help people make an informed choice on one of hundreds of varieties of Japanese maples. The spelling of each variety is under each clip of tree., This is set in a small Japanese themed English garden. In Bedfordshire UK .April 2020. More films will follow as I have 50 varieties all with different characteristics ,with its name and not just under the heading ,Japanese maple.
Absolutely gorgeous !! I love your pagoda lanterns too. I wish we had more of them in the US. They are hard to find . Great work!
Really enjoyed this video thank you for sharing your knowledge and your garden with us..
Enjoyed video found it really interesting and extremely informative on how to move a maple into a large container thank you..
Enjoyed video i have one of these maples
I planted a blood good Japanese maple 3 yrs ago & has grown beautifully. I almost killed by burying it too deep. Now I just recently got the summer gold. You have a great collection. Thanks for sharing.
I love your collection of Acer I’m struggling with my Acer because of a squirrel 🐿️ he keeps eating the leaves 🍁 and snapping off the young branches to eat the leaves 🍁 and I’ve never known a squirrel 🐿️ to do this before eating leaves 🍁 but it is causing die back this year very bad but I love 🧡 the squirrel 🐿️ and the Japanese Acer so I’m at a dead end, nature I suppose lol 😂
Did you prune that Katsura in front of window? Cause the bark is very thick (for maple) in comparison to how big the tree is, if this is natural i might give this a try, i love that.
Your garden is just amazing! So beautiful! What are those fruits with red/orange color that are on the ground around your Osakazuki at 5:00 to 5:20?
Good Morning ( here in England) Meggy, Thank you for your nice comments. Those pods are from the flowering Cornus Kousa or commonly known as Dogwood tree which is behind the Osakazuki. There are a few Chinese and Japanese varieties which flower , these flowers are called Bracts and it is these that turn into those red raspberry looking pods. Thanks for watching Kind Regards T.M.Morgan
Thank you for sharing, Terry. What a clever idea. I have not heard of submerging pots in the ground. I have lost acers in pots over the winter, due to them becoming waterlogged. I now grow them directly in the soil, with better success.
Massively help this, thank you
Very nice first film! I enjoyed watching it and found it informative and inspiring as I prepare my very first order for Japanese maples 😊
Beautiful and well done! What is your average spacing and how many if sun do they get?
Good Morning Ron, Its a south facing garden so it gets a lot of sun in the summer. Fortunately my neighbours have very tall trees surrounding the perimeter of my yard so this helps shade them part of the day. I do have a problem with scorch sometimes, it's a case of moving the trees around to see which ones can tolerate the sunnier spots. Thats another case for keeping them in containers . Once I've found their happy place I bury the container in the ground. I try and give a 5foot spacing . I know the trees will not grow to their full potential but I don't have the space or soil conditions to plant them directly in the ground . I lift the containers every 3/to 4 years to change the soil and trim the roots and in some cases put them in a bigger pot. So really mine are like large Bonsai. I hope this helps , thanks for subscribing and for the comments. Kind Regards T.M.Morgan
Beautiful display of Japanese Maples. I’m extremely impressed with your garden. In a previous post you said you planted them in pots which are buried into the soil. Depending on growth habits, do you repot into larger pots as the tree grows ? Thankyou
Good morning Eleanor, Depending on how big I wish the tree to grow is the deciding factor . As I do not have a large garden but I do have lots of trees I've got to keep them under control. I do have a UA-cam film titled Japanese Maples Repotting which explains how I do this . yes is the answer to your question ,but trim the roots and treat them like large Bonsai. I hope this helps regards. T.M.Morgan
@@terencemorgan6714 Thankyou Terence for your reply. I had a look at your repotting video , very well explained
Do you have a similar display at front of house?
Do you trim them?
Did I hear you say in one of the videos most of the trees came from garden centres and supermarkets?
How do the trees stand up to the hot U.K. summers? Do you need to water regularly?
Very interesting. Thanks for taking the time to put this together!
I’m well impressed on your garden you mentioned trimming the roots? Wouldn’t just leaving them in small pots do the same as trimming?
NO they will end up chocking themselves and no room for fresh soil . you can use the same pot size for ever but like a Bonsia you have to give it room to feed and breath.
@@terencemorgan6714 Thank you for the speedy response… where would you advise getting Japanese maple 🍁 from to make sure there what they say they are 😂 or grow them from seed.. but that will take years… but nursery’s charge the earth…
@@michaelwalker1621 Good Morning Michael, As most Japanese maples are cultivars ( grafted from 2 different varieties) you will not get a true variety from seed. You will get a true variety from a cutting or air layering from a known specimen . They are expensive because they are usually grafted and the end result of a small tree you buy in nursery has taken 3to 4 years to produce . I have found a good supplier with many varieties at various different sizes is: Barthelemy & Co, 262 Wimborne Road, W. Stapehill, Near Bournmouth. BH21 2DZ They do have a website .
@@terencemorgan6714 bit fare away… I live in Kingston upon Hull… but I am on holiday in Cornwall in about 6 weeks…
Xin chào cả nhà và các bạn đã chia sẻ video chúc mừng ngày mới vui vẻ và hạnh phúc bên gia đình nhé bạn
I picked up three acers yesterday that I've put into the largest pots that I could find. They were:- 1) Red Garnet (but mine says max height 1.5m) ? 2) Little Princess 3) Wilsons Pink Dwarf and I'm looking at two sango-kaku for the back of my garden to the rear
Hi they sound very nice , but it's not always wise to put them in the largest container. They respond better if you gradually increase the size over a number of years in containers with lots of drainage holes . The soil should be free drainage and contain lots of mini pine bark . Yes your Red Garnet is correct although some books says they grow to 3 to 4 Mtr Mine is over 30years old and is wider than it is tall, probably 1 Metre.
Your JM's are so beautiful. I have a collection of JM's, but I was just wondering why your JM's are okay to be exposed in the sun? My Bloodgoods (7 years old) in pots have always been on the side of the house with an Umbrella :) over them because their leaves burn from the heat of the sun. My Crimson Queens, Japanese Red Maples are always on the shaded side corner of my house. The only JM exposed to heat is my Orangeola and Seiryu. How come your JM's are so beautiful without shade. Are these the Heat Tolerant JM's? Thank you......
Sorry for the delay in responding . Thanks for your comments but no mine are not heat tolerant and some times I do get leaf scorch. When in doubt keeping them in semi shade is always the best option. It sounds to me you are doing the right things.
Awesome Garden thank for sharing
Cracking video that , love your garden 👍
Hello mate I’m trying to find a acer atropurpureum bloodleaf to buy but with no success. Is bloodleaf the same as bloodgood?
Hi Jonny , it all depends on who you talk too, but yes some nurseries just call them Atropurpureum. the difference is one you can grow from seed the other is grafted.but they are the same. in most other ways so yes buy a Bloodgood and you will not be disappointed . ....................................
Your shiraz is actually one of the "Ghost" cultivars. Shiraz is very similar to the Geisha Gone Wild cultivar.
Very good tour! Lots of information and showing more mature trees is extremely helpful. Learned quite a bit , thank you!
autumn in heaven so beautiful
Your "Orange Dream" is actuelly Katsura :)
You are possibly right as it dos'nt have7 lobes to each leaf, but it does react differently to seasonal changes compared to the other 2 Katsuras i have . I have never questioned it before as it was bought as an Orange Dream but now you have pointed it out i tend to agree with you. I will observe its form with new interest next spring as at the moment that tree has shed its leaves , the other 2 are in different stages of autumn changes . Thanks for letting me know .i also have about 6 other trees that i didn't show on the film as i have no idea what they are . Thanks again I'll try and amend it in spring.
Lovely collection mate. How is your winter there and how do you care for them during frost? Thanks for sharing.
Hi Bernard, Sorry it has taken so long to reply. Thanks for your comment, . Our winters are not to bad (South East England) . We do get frosty days and most years get about 2 weeks of snow. All the trees in containers above ground i huddle together and protect them from the wind. All those in the ground i do nothing.
Beautiful garden you have. Can you tell me what type is at 1 min, before Red Garnet.
Hi Ivan, thanks for watching , do you mean the green lace leaf ( Dissectum) which is called Ellen.
@@terencemorgan6714 No, it's not green leaf, it's red, and in the video it starts at 40 seconds, just before Red Garnet 🙂
@@ivanposinkovic3169 Good Morning Ivan I believe its a" Peve Dave"
Hi Terence just watched all your videos and your garden is a credit to you . As I’ve just bought 3 Acers which I’m planting in pots in the ground as you have done can I just ask what size of pot should I put the plants into , at the moment there in about 5.5in from garden centre . Many thanks
Thanks for that Terence very helpful im just in the process of taking a couple of shrubs out and definitely going to put maples in as I have one in another part of the garden . Just to decide which variety to choose I don’t have a lot of room so could I prune the maples to keep them to the size I want . Many thanks
HI David,. yes David i prune the branches of mine regularly and the roots every 3to 6 years . i treat them like large bonsai.
I took some JM cuttings on 30th March and got some lovely little plants now. I've even made a new video on their progress so far. I am now thinking about the coming winter and surviving the cold to then wake up in bud the following spring. I plan to keep them in my mini greenhouse which is in my old aviary with a vine plant growing over it. If it gets very cold, I'll cover them a little further within the greenhouse to be safe. Your Acers look fantastic! Mine have a very long way to go. I do have a 22 year old Sycamore Maple which my Dad gave to me as a sapling, this is doing really well now, I pruned it back a little this year and it's growing back well.
💕 Love your garden . Thank you for making this video .
Very nice.
Love your trees
Very helpful video. Thank you so much
Beautiful.
Brilliant videos.
I got my very first Japanese Maple today and HomeDepot didn't label the variety. Your garden is so lovely! Hopefully we can try to achieve 10% of what you've done in the backyard
Beautiful garden and really good informative video. Thank you. What is the red leaf acer behind the osakazuki, please?
Hi Ksenial, the red one you are reffering too is a Atropurpureum, also known as Blood good or Blood Leaf . i have 2 the other one is shown at the end of the video. I hope this helps and thank you for the comments. Terry
is this much better than weeds?
Only you can answer that ,if you prefer weeds then grow weeds ,what ever floats your boat.
Lovely show - regards from South Africa
Also where did you purchase your Japanese shed
Can I ask where your wife purchased the book and what it’s called
Mean ten Acers slip of the finger
