For my 2¢, if anyone is more interested in getting a larger tree fast as opposed to what exactly that JM looks like, then honestly I'd recommend going with a base Acer palmatum and not one of the varietals (i.e. the JM your varietal is grafted onto). As many have learned from seeing below-the-graft shoots taking off, your basic palmatum is usually much more vigorous than any of its varietals, and once well established can add on 2-3 feet of growth per year easily. A good option if you're wanting to build up and develop your landscape in the shortest time possible.
My niece sent me a baby Japanese Maple from Oregon to Tampa fl. I just transferred it to better pot with the best soil available. I hope to see it grow to a big tree in 15 years.
Thank you for this! I bought a maple last year and planted in the fall. It was simpled labeled 'Acer Palmatum' and I've been trying to figure out which cultivar. By watching this video I am fairly certain now that it is some variety of Coral Bark, which I am thrilled about! I can't wait for it to wake up this spring and mature!
Absolutely love your videos, Jim! Very informative and have learned so many new plants! I do have a few points in your video. I live in Central Indiana (border on zone 5b and 6a) Japanese Maples do not tolerate full sun well here. In fact the thrive in near full shade or morning sun and afternoon shade. The leaves scorch in afternoon sun, and the color can completely bleach from the leaves by the end of Summer. While I do totally agree with you they do best with some direct sun, I always avoid full sun even in zone 5. Zone 5 summers are just as hot and humid as the Deep South.
Living Los Angeles we have clay soil. I’ve had to plant all my Japanese Maples in compost. I basically created a cement large rectangular planter that I had to fill w lots of compost for my Sango kakus which seem to be the best for my small garden.
I took some JM cuttings on 30th March and got some lovely little plants now. I've even made a new video on their progress so far. I am now thinking about the coming winter and surviving the cold to then wake up in bud the following spring. I plan to keep them in my mini greenhouse which is in my old aviary with a vine plant growing over it. If it gets very cold, I'll cover them a little further within the greenhouse to be safe.
I'm with you on this one Dan, I Love Jap Maples too, I have around 15 and wont be stopping at that either. I'm constantly on the lookout for rare and unusual varieties. I would compare them to the Famouse Jap Actress in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Like her they get better with Age and Maturity..
My husband bought me the Bloodgood Japanese Maple for my birthday. I loved it but it didn't leaf out the next year. I did the "scratch test" and there was no green until a few inches above the ground. I took it back to where he bought it. How I wish it did well in my yard...love the color and the ornamental leaves.
thank you so much for your knowledge, you keep it interesting and it all inspires me. I live in zone 8a . I just planted a coral bark maple and I used your advice from another video to plant my maple tree. I really hope it survives. thank you once again.
What tree did you graft the Japanese Maple to? If you graft it to a quicker growing maple will that speed up the growth rate of the Japanese Maple, especially on some of the dwarf weeping like a Crimson Queen?
Hi. Loved your video. I live in zone 7a and Purchased a Japanese maple 2 yrs ago. I noticed that it's not really growing and leaves are limp and dry. It is in an area where it gets direct sunlight all day. Should I move it to a shaded area? If so when would be the best time?
Thumbs up: I think my graft got quirky and produced 2 'different' branches from its graft ... but it became tall (8') and beautiful in partial shade by 3 yrs.; utmost blessings!. :)
We are growing Japanese Maples in zone 9b (Central Valley California). While Japanese maples can tolerate full-sun in cooler climates, they are very prone to "leaf-scorch" in zone 9b. Especially with the 115 degree temperatures we recently endured here this September. In order to prevent leaf-scorch, I had to build shade structures around the younger Japanese Maples for their first couple of years. Once their roots became established the Japanese Maples became much more tolerant of the very hot/dry summers in this area. However, I still have to keep an eye on them when it hits 115 degrees, and make sure they get plenty of water. I enjoy trying to grow plants in zones that the "professionals" say can't be done. Japanese Maples growing in Zone 9b happens to be one of those non-recommended plants for this area. I am also growing Colorado Blue Spruce (Hoopsii) trees in this oven of a valley, and they are doing great. It just takes a little more monitoring and TLC to grow these out-of-zone plants. This is the complete opposite of the many native plants that we have growing in our Xeriscaped yards. The hotter it gets the more those plants seem to thrive. Especially plants like Crape Mertles, Little Johns, Pomegranates, Texas Rangers, Lavender, Mexican Sage and Yuccas. They all love the heat, and requre very little water to keep alive. This is great considering the ongoing drought here in California. Now if more people would just get rid of those water-wasting green carpets in their yards, there would be much more water to go around for everyone. 🙂
Thanks for sharing your video with us. I purchased few maple tree online from Holland, I reported in bigger pot after some time I noticed that 3 of 4 plants leafs are drying. I am really worry about my plants, can you help with your advise please
I’m in zone 9 and just bought a bloodgood at my local Lowe’s . It also be getting full sun at around 10:30 am. I hope it adjust. If not I will be hanging on to my receipt.
I know it’s a maple. It’s still very small. It’s only about 3 inches high. I found it in the cracks of my pavers. I generally brought it out and put it into a small container. I named it Maple, but I’m trying to find out what kind it is thank you for your explanations. Mine has red edges.
Jim, appreciate information as I'm looking at learning the about the different types of Japanese maples and perhaps even growing them for others. Great video and what sources would you recommend for additional info and learning?
Great vid but 1 important thing you didn't mention is that they require soil that is acidic they don't do well on alkaline soils , in their natural environment they grow under the dappled shade canopy of the forest.
This is a Great Video ! Color . Variety . Care . Various types types . Your technicolor was true . Audio was excellent One question. What price ranges for these should we expect ?
Didn't discuss was soil type to plant in pots or in the ground. took me a while to find out the best mixes but from what I remember potting soil and pine bark or potting soil and horticulture pumice 5050 mixes. But maybe you can discuss that further
Hi Jim, I live in North Texas and just bought a Japanese maple “Acer Palmatum var. Bloodgood” in a pot. I watched your video and I’m wondering if I should put it in a big planter… Did you say that you can plant them in a pot? I would like to have it be mobile in case it doesn’t tend to do well in our yard so I can move it around if it needs different lighting… Your thoughts?
Hi Jim - what kind of maple do you recommend planting in an urn? I live in NY and my small garden already very crowded so just trying to utilize an urn instead and still add some color to my backyard. Of course I I am not looking for anything that will get too tall.
Can you tell us about maple allopathy? I know it's not as serious as black walnut allopathy, but knowing which perennials, annuals, & grasses are affected by maples would be helpful. In Minnesota, we have a lot of maples and it would be helpful to know.
I have a upright one that I planted in the ground a year and a half ago. Seems to be doing fine and gets about 6 hours of morning sun and is in the shade for the afternoon. It got quite a bit of foliage this spring...however, It really hasn't grown at all. It has stayed relatively at the same height as when I got it. Not entirely sure what I did wrong. maybe it needs better dirt and mulch around it?
You are the absolute best information Utube channel. I get soooo excited when I watch your videos, then..... deer like them.... I have a huge deer problem. If I was a hunter I would be in heaven. So I just go onto another of your videos. Thanks Jim. P. S. sometimes I see a little dog in the background looks so sweet.
Jim, Can you take cutting from a burning bush this time of the year in November to propagate them or would it be best to wait until spring. I was going to set them indoors by my woodstove and keep them moist until they root out.
Japanese maples are our favorites. We probably have 50 or more of them.we have upright and weeping. One of our favorites is the Coral bark maple because in the winter the limbs are a beautiful color all the winter. They are wonderful😊
i have a japanese maple that i bought online that was labeledl pink. i think it is peaches and cream. It is about 3 and 1/2 feet tall and I noticed it has two trucks. Should i dig it and divide them?
Can I plant a Japanese maple in a container and then submerge/bury the container (with the tree in it) in the ground? The reason for this is because my HOA requires one tree to be planted in the ground (front of house), no exposed pots, and I wanted to keep my tree small and slow growth, without roots spreading underground massively and affecting my home foundation.
@@rafaelcamara6639 Thank you so much. I have recently planted one directly onto the ground and you are right about it being slow growth, which is perfect.
We get -30 degrees in winter. Would Japanese maple do ok? Also, do bunnies eat the bark? We have a problem with bunnies eating scrubs in winter, only my black current they don't touch for some reason.
I live in north Santa Barbara county California, I've noticed the leaves on my young Japanese maple bloodgood tree are getting burnt, so I bought shade cloth and made a freestanding canopy to block hours of direct sunlight, how much shade time should I keep on my tree.. sun is hottest between 1-4pm.... is this a good idea to block sun to prevent leaf burn?
Yes, I have that problem too. NC. My 60 year old laceleaf Crimson Queen had trees on either side of it sheltering it from the sun. When I lost a big part of one of the dogwoods two years ago it got sunburned in that area immediately in April. I thought about a shade cloth screen but it would be huge. I’d need it installed. The tree is 12’ tall by 16’ wide
Jim.. We bought a Japanese Maple tree and we're in zone 7 but where we wanted to plant it will be in direct sunlight and it gets hot during the summer Season in Idaho. I was told it will fry like bacon. We want to try and keep it in the container and place it on our back patio where it'll get morning shade and afternoon sun. We will put it on wheels to move it around but I want to make sure it'll be okay in the container?!
Kimberly, I have a similar concern about the direct sun & hear as I love in zone 8. I noticed Jim did not answer you & you posted this question a while ago. Curious...what have you discovered? Did your tree survive?
This is a late reply, but I have an emperor 1 in Austin, TX (8b). It's slightly on the struggle bus, but it randomly grew a foot at the top. Full sun probably 10 hours a day. Some leaves are a bit crispy, but it seems to be doing OK. I irrigate with sprinkler heads (MP Rotator) for about 1.5 hours/week, and will occasionally give them more water when I'm bored. Planted last November Ish (it's now late August).
I am new to your Chanel and can’t get enough of your videos!! I live in a zone 5b can you please make a video of flowering shrubs I can plant in my garden. Thank you
I live in zone 8a. Can I transplant them now in a larger container? It’s about 2-3 ft now. Or is too much of a shock in this weather? 50’s most nights.
I live in an area with high wind, wet winters & 30 degrees summers. All maples keep dying. Branches gradually die even with the ones in protected spots. Any suggestions?
Dear Jim, I just purchased one red and one yellow/greenish maple they're both about 4 feets long. The question is how far they should be away from the fence and from each other? As I love to plant them very close to each others to have a good mix of colors. Thanks
I recently purchased a crimson Queen maple and I potted in a container. I have new leaves coming up at the bottom of the tree but they are completely different looking leaves not even red. What should I do?
Hello! The reddish-purple weeping looking kind in our front yard has sprouted very green non-weeping limbs straight up. It looks possessed…. Can I cut the straight up branches, or will it damage the tree? Is there anything I can do to become cohesive again?
I recently bought a blood good but I just found that it’s main stem is going bended and the store got a stick to make it straight. Do you know what I should do to get it full straight???
Hello Jim! I was almost ready to put this weeping Japanese maple to the curb. Three years ago we had a bad snow storm here on East Coast of Long Island. A chunk of the maple broke off. My husband tried grafting it back together with pantyhose. It worked! My maple was a gorgeous purple color now the majority of the plant is green. Almost similar to the one you showed green with reddish/purple edges. I’ve had the tree for almost 10 years. If I could figure out how to forward a photo I would. Is there anyway to get it back to the reddish color?
It really sounds like the tree is not the named variety you purchased, it is the root stock variety. Meaning when it broke, it grew vack from below the graft.
Watch for sunburn. It can’t take midday direct sun. Mine gets fried in one direction because I lost an overhanging limb that protected it. It’s large. Been in the ground 60 years
Hello, I would really like to plant an upright japanese maple in in the corner of my house, close to the foundation for some height. Is that safe to do?
I'm in 8B I believe. 30 miles north of Dallas. I only said it was a Chinese Maple, it had red leaves that burnt from too much sun. It is rooted now. I was worried it was just going to dye. But didn't want to move it during a very hot summer. The new leaves are coming in green now? Should I move it to a shadier location and bring it closer to the house? It does seem like it will not get very tall. I planted it in before summer. Is it ok to move it? Would November good time? I appreciate your help.
Hey Trudy, I don’t see an answer to your question. I live in Melissa Texas just north of Dallas as well… Just purchased a Bloodgood in a small planter. Trying to figure out if I should plant it in a pot or plant it in the ground etc. What ended up happening with yours?
You mentioned that they’re grafted. Can a Japanese Maple throw seeds that grow? We have a mature Japanese Maple at our new house that’s surrounded by baby Japanese Maples. We think it the mature one may have been planted in the 60s or 70s.
Beverly Meola Rogers they will grow, still need to be grafted if you want them to be exactly the same as your treee, you can also graft to a different variety
I have 5 Japanese Maples that I started from seed. The tops always dies in the winter. They grow nicely in spring and summer and then winter hits and I lose half the growth because it freezes. Any suggestions ? I’m in zone 6b, Northern California.
Need a suggestion, I have a Japanese Maple Bloodgood that the top portion died but the main stock kept growing even though I was pruning these off. Now I am having to deal with the bottom portion healthy and growing but a bare trunk at the top sticking up in view from the bottom growth. Hate to discard this tree. Variety of grafted bottom I do not know.
My Japanese maples are 34 years old they are on my patio they are glorious and beautiful ,I did not know how to care for them , some of the bark is rotted on one I never fed them is it to late ? If you address this I will listen for your answer .
Everyone label I've read from growers of Japanese Maples say they are deer resistant (not deer proof but deer tend to avoid). These can be very very expensive for a larger specimen and would hate to risk deer browse or a rub.
Hi Jim, I have a question. We're planting some Sunshine Ligustrum, Ever Red, and a Catawba Crape Myrtle in a small area of our yard. I have a Shaina Japanese Maple that's currently in a container on our patio. I'm wanting to plant it eventually in the same area as these plants. But I was going to wait 2 or 3 years to do it. My question is, should I plant now or wait? I remember you saying in one of your videos that established trees and shrubs don't play well with newbies. Thanks!
Two or three years wouldn't be a big issue. Shade trees and large growing shrubs might be an issue, but not small ornamental plants. Good luck with your projects
I have the weeping kind of Japanese Maple tree, two plum and one green. I noticed on one of the plums that on some of the leaves, on the tips, they are drying out and turning brown. I do water them, maybe too much after watching your video, bit I don't think that is the problem. Any ideas.
I have a big one - 15’ spread and 12’ high. It gets sunburned because I lost a big limb on an old dogwood that was shielding part of it in the highest sun part of the dat from 12-2
I just a Japanese maple and some of look pretty bad I noticed a couple of mushrooms growing in pot that I bought it in so I assume there's a fungus problem am info fungus treatment would be helpful
I love people from the south, so mannered and kind. Thanks Jim, the gardening is a plus!
you obviously never sat down for a night of texas hold 'em with a group from the south! lol
For my 2¢, if anyone is more interested in getting a larger tree fast as opposed to what exactly that JM looks like, then honestly I'd recommend going with a base Acer palmatum and not one of the varietals (i.e. the JM your varietal is grafted onto). Planted last November Ish (it's now late August).
Hi, have you ever keep a Japanese maple called Taylor? I know it’s pink in spring but does it turn red in Autumn?
No, Taylor is pink.
Can you grow the upright maple indoors or is it only for outdoors?
Prolly next to a sunny window...
Can you prune an upright Japanese Maple so that it spills over and has a weeping look?
I am new to your Chanel and can’t get enough of your videos!! I live in a zone 5b can you please make a video of flowering shrubs I can plant in my garden. Thank you
Thank you for the information. I have a lacy red type and a light green. Pretty much getting everything you suggested.
Are there a couple of varieties that could grow in a container in a partial shade in zone 10?
Hello! The reddish-purple weeping looking kind in our front yard has sprouted very green non-weeping limbs straight up. It looks possessed…. Can I cut the straight up branches, or will it damage the tree? Is there anything I can do to become cohesive again?
Thank u I hv a few maples just want to know how to plant them I'm in the uk I find they dont like a lot of light or sun thank u forr yr vida eileen
Hi Jim. Thanks for your video. What's the correct spelling of the green upright you mentioned that sounds like: "Serry You"?
Seiryu Japanese maple
New japanese Weeping maple Just notice 2/3 of the whole thing. The leaves curled up what I do.
I planted mine in almost full sun. It’s a blood good.
Should I use an umbrella to shade it during the hot summer months.

We live in waxhaw NC.
I recently bought a blood good but I just found that it’s main stem is going bended and the store got a stick to make it straight. Do you know what I should do to get it full straight???
Hi, I planted my japanese maple atropurpureum on the bank of a small river in the shade, will it have too much water?
My crimson queen the leaves are drying up at the tips. Just moved it to a bigger pot. Hopefully it recovers.
Watch for sunburn. It can’t take midday direct sun. Mine gets fried in one direction because I lost an overhanging limb that protected it. It’s large. Been in the ground 60 years
@@suz567 thanks
Can this be grown in a hydroponic way ? I’ve been messing with aquariums and planting in the filters
I'm thinking of taking a tree stump up that is rotten in my garden.. is it a good place to put my Japanese maple there
I have three 50 foot tall Japanese maple trees
Hello, I would really like to plant an upright japanese maple in in the corner of my house, close to the foundation for some height. Is that safe to do?
Very Nice. Thank You.
Thank you!
I have 5 Japanese Maples that I started from seed. The tops always dies in the winter. They grow nicely in spring and summer and then winter hits and I lose half the growth because it freezes. Any suggestions ? I’m in zone 6b, Northern California.
Jim Enjoyed your video. Did you grow the trees your showing from seed?
Need a suggestion, I have a Japanese Maple Bloodgood that the top portion died but the main stock kept growing even though I was pruning these off. Now I am having to deal with the bottom portion healthy and growing but a bare trunk at the top sticking up in view from the bottom growth. Hate to discard this tree. Variety of grafted bottom I do not know.
Just prune the top and it should grow back healthy over a few months.
Thanks!
My Japanese maples are 34 years old they are on my patio they are glorious and beautiful ,I did not know how to care for them , some of the bark is rotted on one I never fed them is it to late ? If you address this I will listen for your answer .
@Luvenia Stokes. Are they in the ground?
Thanks Jim...very informative...but you lost us at "Deer Love Maple Trees". We are moving to the national forest in Zone 8, and deer are everywhere.
Everyone label I've read from growers of Japanese Maples say they are deer resistant (not deer proof but deer tend to avoid). These can be very very expensive for a larger specimen and would hate to risk deer browse or a rub.
@@jetsamperes5762 incorrect, sprays are needed. It is a constant battle but worth it.
A fence will protect it.
Thank You!
