I live in San Jose, California, Zone 9b and most of my Japanese Maples are showing burned leaf tips this time of year. We are in a drought and have had a heat wave with temperatures in the high 90's. Labor day the temperature is expected to reach 100 degrees. A tree that has been truly impressive and remarkable is Acer palmatum "Monticello Gardens"! This tree has been left temporally growing in the black 3 gallon pot and placed in one of the hottest, afternoon sunniest location on the concrete patio. I didn't leave it there intentionally and planed on moving it, however as a test "Monticello Gardens" has not only survived the heat and afternoon sun, she has thrived and looks remarkable. I highly recommend Acer palmatum "Monticello Gardens" if your looking for a tree that's bulletproof and beautiful.
Gosh, THANK YOU. I reside in St George Utah, 100°F five months/year... I grew up in Palo Alto + badly want to grow a Japanese maple to remind me of the Bay Area. Your tip is great!!
First let me preface by stating some leaf burn does not bother me. I’ve noticed as the trees get older it is less and less of a problem. I live in DFW zone 8a and Seiryu, Shishigashira, Mikawa Yatsbusa and Bloodgood are all doing well. Again let me say again. Leaf burn does not bother me.
This was incredibly helpful. Looking forward to part 2. Quick question, does being a heat tolerant JM translate to full sun or just the air temperature?
I live in a zone 10b in Southern California, but the inland desert... I have a Bloodgood, Shishigashira and Crimson Queen. They struggle in this consistent heat. But I've found that putting them in a small greenhouse helps keep the leaves from drying out.
I’m seriously looking into getting into a Kiyohime. It’s been 11 months since you posted. How hot did it get in your area and how cold. Please don’t say zone this or that….how cold? - as in an exact cold degree & for how long. As for the high, how high (exact deg) & was or is it in direct sunlight? I live in El Paso TX. Highs 105-108 2 to 2.5 months straight and lows 15-20 deg.
I recently recieved 3 trees from you guys and i want to say thank you! They came so quickly and well packaged! Can't wait to purchase more! Again thank you

Great selection! I have a shishihashira in full sun in zone 8a and it has shown minimal scorching signs in the worst of summer. I have a seiryu nearby which is in its second year in my car. It still hasn't shown any spectacular growth, hopefully because I had to transplant it during winter. Maybe next year?
Lionshead was one of my first in our new house and we love it. It's in full sun zone 6 and thrives. Love the meaning of it and so happy it was our first in the new house. Everyone who visits loves this one and like you said always ask what is that tree? Love the texture of the leaves
I have three Red Emperor 1 JMs. One is currently dark bronze leaf colour, one has reverted to green - despite being a deep dark red leaf earlier this year and the last one is red. I’m looking forward to whatever Autumn colours they will display before the leaves drop.. The UK has had two fierce heat waves whereby the temp was reaching 38 degrees C! They are all in large terracotta pots! Hopefully next years summer will be a lot for stable and favourable to the needs of the JMs.
Hi Can I get name of maple for The last picture of the big maple please? Thanks I need a fast growing tree with heat tolerant since I am in southern California Pasadena area.
I’m in Zone 9 CA Central Valley. From late October to end of march its 65-73F degrees during the day with varying cold from 34-45F , April-September its 90-108F every single day, it gets to 90 by 7:00 ama nd and no lower than 75F at night. Which maple tree would you recommend? Trees here just face the sun 24/7 without shade.
I live in Jackson Miss the front of my house where i want to put the tree faces South West i just bought 6 Japanese Maple from you, would one of the Coral Bark maples survive in that hot afternoon sun.
Q? I live on the Texas gulf coast zone 9b, very hot and humid with salt air. How would the Tamukeyama do here? I really love dwarf weeping laceleafs that are red or purple. HELP! Thank you for all your informative information.

Great video. How does dry heat / low humidity affect maples? Would they burn more in low humidity climates? Also the affect of UV? I suspect the higher the UV index days the more likely the maples will burn?
I have a few customers in Hawaii but it’s not ideal. Some areas in Maui have enough evaluation to provide seasonal changes but most don’t. Zone 10 US is typically to hot

Humidity seems to be key issue dry heat is what they can’t tolerate from my research anyway I own 18varieties in zone 9

Sad to hear. What area did this happen? Direct sunlight? Any pm shade? What were your highs?
What would grow good in tucson arizona
Check your zone. Maples work 5-9 but need shade in 9 and some high heat index zone 8s
Mikawa yatsubusa, Fireglow and Tamukeyama would be good starting places if your zone allows
