This guy is the GODFATHER of this Japanese Maples shit. Wow. I’m learning so much just by listening to him speak. I’m in the midst of also creating quite a garden and I am just here admiring the beauty of the trees & soaking up the wisdom!
I currently have 400+ in the ground in my garden, beautiful trees you have , some of my oldest are around 20 years old. But most are new that I’ve added recently
The seiryu such is a gorgeous tree. An upright green laceleaf that is very unique in the fall. And wow I had never seen the Bonfire before. Thanks for the tour
You have some Amazing Japanese trees. And beautifully explained such dedication is rare, thanks for sharing. I am in Coleraine and it rains a lot here…😂❤️❤️🙏❤️🙏
Awesome video but you must live in the PNW or some other super mild climate. I live in middle tn and autumn moon can't take full sun here for 3 days before every leaf on it would be crispy. Enjoy your paradise!
Yes, we are in Chilliwack BC, just north of Washington state. The autumn moon has much more sun tolerance then the full moon which can not tolerate any sun at all. I have both varieties described in the video. Are you sure you have the autumn moon? as it definitely is sun / partial shade tolerant
The larger container grown Japanese maples are fairly easy to move with a good quality 2 wheel dolly. Although generally they are never moved once we decide on their location.
You didn’t say what zone you are in but I’m thinking northern US even Canada so when you say can handle full sun I don’t think it could handle full sun in my high desert Arizona home. You have a beautiful collection. I just purchased my first Japanese dwarf maple tree, Acer Palmatum tree, Red Dragon. I always wanted one and this one is okay in my zone 8b as long as it gets afternoon shade I’m told. We shall see how it fairs. I’m going to keep it in a pot under my huge pine tree that has been pruned up since it is in my backyard. My problem is finding the correct mix 80% pine bark mulch, 15% peat and 5% perlite. The peat and perlite I can find but nowhere in my small town or Tucson, AZ can I find pine bark mulch. Mr Maple said you could it in Miracle Grow potting soil if it has no fertilizer in it but again I’ve looked everywhere and they all have fertilizer in it. It’s almost Xmas do you have any suggestions? I’ve only had it two days as of this comment.
Hi Michele thanks for noticing the over sight. we are also in Zone 8b, fairly close to the border of Washington state. I have now mentioned it in the description of the video. The red dragon is a great choice, it was one of our very first cultivators and can handle high heat / wind. As far as hot weather goes, we had a heat bomb back in 2021 with temps of 45C (113F). All of our trees survived although definitely required watering 2x each day ( early morning / early evening) The hardest thing on the japanese maples in container is heat combined with high winds. Its best to make sure the tree is away from high wind areas if you have excessive heat. As for potting mix we always use a composted fir bark mulch with sand ( I have a potting mix video as well that you may want to check out) Hopefully a good quality nursery in your area can bring in mulch if you request it? Also, if you have a large landscape company in your area, perhaps they would have bulk mix that you could get? Hope that helps!
Thanks for the great video of all the beautiful trees. I was wondering if you pruned Osakazuki. I thought it would grow taller than the one in your garden.
Yes, an Osakazuki can grow taller. We have pruned ours to keep it at the height it is. You can expect a height of 2 1/2 meters ( 8' feet) by allowing the limbs to keep pushing upwards. It really all comes down to how you like to have it presented in your garden.
I have a 4 part video series on our entire grafting process. It has its own separate playlist on my channel. Here is the link to the playlist: ua-cam.com/video/TMCNMChxUMQ/v-deo.html
I'm just curious, so I'm in the Midwest and I've had 3 maples that I purchased for containers and they were alive during the growing season. And so when winter set in I let them harden off Now that we are in may they have not buded so some of the stems are dark brown and I'm assuming they are dead ❓ so giving me your best short answer Should have I brought them out of the cold the first year or have I done something elese wrong? I have a three season room off the back of the house. I have a makawa yatsubusa.... Orion and a shishishagiri and by the looks of things they didn't make it 🤔
@@myk1200s Hard to answer that without more details. Long sustained cold during the winter? In the praire provinces in Canada, always best to put them into some sort of shelter out of the driving winds in winter. Here in our area we get temps. of -20 C for short periods and all of our container trees are fine with that. Small containers with young trees we do keep in the greenhouse during the the winter
I enjoyed your video, thank you. Where are you located (in the US? which state?) I read a comment you are in zone 8b, which can help somewhat as a reference, but all 8b zones are not the same.
Hi Nora We are in Chilliwack BC, Canada. Our town name is right at the headline of each video I believe. Geographically we are just north of the Sumas, Washington border.
Hi Chris, Any of the varieties with really tight bud sets are always extremely difficult to graft with good high success rate. For example, some of the varieties we grew would include Shaina, Shishigashira, Bonfire, orido nishiki, etc. Grafting success would be considered very good if we had a 20 -25% success rate on those varieties.

I’m getting my forever house in a year or two, and I really want to start my Japanese maple garden. Will they do good in California weather ?
There are many japanese maples grown in California. Head out to your local independent garden shop that really caters to gardeners. You just have to be selective with which varieties wouldd be suitable for your growing area.
We are in zone 8b Japanese maple can grow in zone 3 and 4 although there would be extra care required for the cooler winter months making sure they are well protected. Strategic planting in the garden would be important. There is quite a lot of info online if you search " Japanese maple growing in zone 3 & 4"
