Believe it or not, the home video game console has been around for nearly 49 years. Yes, that’s almost half a century. Since 1972, we’ve seen over 30 consoles created and sold in North America, which is a ridiculous amount of consoles. That’s an average of more than one console released every two years. Back in the early ‘70s, Nintendo was still about half a decade away from making their first console and the PlayStation and Xbox weren’t even a thought yet. Gaming has come a very long way since then so I’ll be taking a look at every home console ever released in North America.
The first console ever released was the Magnavox Odyssey in 1972. It was the only first generation console to be released in North America. In the second generation, we got the famous Atari 2600, best known for the legendary game, Space Invaders. The third generation was known as the 8-bit generation and introduced us to the Nintendo Entertainment System and the Sega Master System. The fourth generation had the Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo Entertainment System doing battle. As for the fifth generation, it saw a major shakeup. The Sony PlayStation joined the battle alongside the Nintendo 64 and Sega Saturn.
There’s more consoles to get into than just those so enjoy the video, let me know what you think is the best console of all time in the comments section below and don’t forget to subscribe to TheGamer for more gaming tech content.

You kept on showing the NES when you were talking about the SNES. You couldn’t find a picture? Lol. It’s one of the most iconic consoles ever
I was looking for this exact comment. They also showed a picture of a Wii U instead of a Wii at the first picture.
Truly this guy is Confused!!
🤝
@@jamesmylife6578 This is why the wii u flopped hard. Sony always wins, baby, they always win! You can't beat Sony!
@@Number1Tailsfan ong they could’ve named it anything else
Why are you showing NES games when talking about the SNES?
This vis was porly made
I noticed the same thing. Sad that they didn't even show a visual of the SNES in that section. lame. Should probably update that.
Benjamin smith i was sopuse to say that
Because they didn’t actually play on the snes and are too lazy to do research
They are a corporate channel
They just read some Wikipedia article
yes, i agree
I started gaming in 1972 when my dad brought home his knockoff version of the pong player. I still play at 55 years old cos TV is crap.
This channel have a big set of balls to call themselves The Gamer
As a middle aged man, all I can say is I've had the privilege seeing games involve from the pong era to today. I can almost see the day when Real Engine 5 will be the graphics used for mobile games.
I can almost hear morphius say to me "what is the matrix?"
Also had the pleasure of experiencing the outdoors before technology was so addictive and kept everyone separated and at home.
You skipped over the numerous Pong consoles released in the first generation, which would bring the total number of consoles released in the US market WAY over thirty.
Ham sandwiches are ham flavored generally speaking
there were around 600 consoles made in the first generation
What happen to ColecoVision?
no mention of coleco, vectrex, xegs, AES, segaCD/32x, and slammed bally as a "flop"
the astrocade is a homerun comparatively to the 2600 or ody2 (albeit the price kept most consumers out) - bally has a library almost as stacked as the 2600
Also no atari 5200
I was rather surprised also about there was no mention regarding the ColecoVision System...
Granted... It doesn't deserved it's own Generation category, but it was definitely the bridge between the Atari 2600 era and the Nes.
Hes says wii and then shows the wii u.
Yeah that bothered me
He says snes and then shows the nes
What was your first video game console?
Umm... The Magnavox Odyssey.
*WHAT THE FU-*
I think he didn’t do his research well 😅
How time goes by... I remember the SEGA Saturn, N64 and PS1 as my first consoles, and that Gamecube was such a great thing, too. It is astonishing to see how far consoles have come throughout the years.
Talks about SNES, shows NES.
Talks about Square Enix, shows random racing game.
Ok.
talks about wii and shows wii u😭
Missing the best console of the 2nd gen - the Colecovision.
sega and nintendo both had games on coleco- its still fun today & somehow works with a genesis controller
they also forgot the color Tv game 6 and color tv game 15 in the first or second gen.
The gamer didn't even show a single picture of the snes, they just talked about it while showing nes videos? Wtfrick? Show us the snes!
Ikr
They skipped one of the most legendary consoles of all time, what a shame.
They have bad console recognition
Currently I have all 3 consoles from the 7th generation! They are the only consoles I have but I love them so much!
I started gaming as a kid in the 2nd Generation and I’m totally cool with that! 😎
Ps1 vs N64. One of if not the biggest rivalry of the 90s
I miss some of th sega saturn games
That was one heck of a history
The 1UP(Mari0)
Lack of history *
You all probably dont give a damn but does any of you know a way to log back into an instagram account..?
I was dumb forgot the login password. I love any help you can give me
@Briggs Axton instablaster :)
Those consoles must be nostalgia.
Wii and Xbox 360 and ps3 and ps2
You forgot the colecovision and the CDI. Also dont just gloss over the saturn, its got some great games if you do more than 10 seconds of looking.
True didn't talk about the philips CDI And the 2nd Saturn is easily the greatest 2D fighting game console of all time. Not to mention has one of the most sought after games of all time with Panzer Dragoon Saga 🔥.
the cdi is definitely underrated, however it's primary function was to be an "edutainment" / media center device
they changed gears to games much later
however, their port of tetris is ridiculously good
like, maybe the best ever made
Not enough…
Some great games? It did not have even a Sonic new game!!! Today many people who never have owned a Saturn say good stuff about it, but back them the people who got one had just regrets.Sorry to say, but the Saturn was nothing compared to the PS1 and N64. It killed Sega even before the Dreamcast.
@@naomibillharzferreira2981 whats todays date?
Since you didn’t bother with it, I’ll cover Colecovision for you.
Coleco entered the console business with the Colecovision. It wound up with a 17% share in the market, making it a direct rival to the giant Atari 2600. It was the only company with the license to produce Donkey Kong, so it made sure that its competition had the worst possible version
it was really pitched as the next generation of systems, and the exact reason the 5200 was created. And just like Coleco, the 5200 had an attachment allowing you to play 2600 games. There's a 3rd generation that Moronipedia skips over that ran 1982-1986, because they fell it'd be too much work now to fix (lazy assholes).
The other gaming consoles destroyed the video game industry
I never looked at it as a "rival" to the Atari 2600 system. It was more like the next advancement in the evolution of home video gaming... The NES came next
Missing a few 2nd generation systems. Colecovision, Vectrex, and Intellivision II. Not sure if it it would fit the list, but there was also the Tandy and C64 systems. There are a few others but do not recall them at the moment.
C64 was a micro computer so I'd say it shouldn't be included. If you did include it, you'd have to include every other micro too. So, the C128, the BBC Micro, Acorn, Amstrad, the Sinclair micros, the Dragon, and I know there's more I'm forgetting
Never owned a Vectrex but a Friend of my had one loved that Console so underrated 💔.
bro intellivision 2 is literally the same system in a nicer package, the sears version still looks the best imo though
Sega Mega Drive/ Genesis with Sonic The Hedgehog, that's where it all started for me!
There is no damn way the 2600 and 5200 were in the same generation when Atari pitched the 5200 as the successor to the VCS and main competitor to the ColecoVision.
I remember playing 1st gen games on the home screen, and all the exciting time when all these games got upgraded through all these systems, of which the 16bit Arcade typical games left the most powerful mark as they were hugely attractive and playable ones. Nowadays, most games need to have that catchy elements to get peoples attention.
its weird to think that video game consoles have been around for almost 50 years
6:00 The Sega Dreamcast first released in November of 1998. Look it up.
The disc the gamecube used was a 1.5 gb optical disc
That's why it didn't get a lot of 3rd party titles
loved the video! showing some love from one repair channel to another!
Is it just me or did he forget the color tv game consoles by Nintendo in 1977
yea he clearly doesn't know nintendo, he somehow mistook the snes for the nes.
1:26 Damn you, that was good!
Ι do not think anyone will see this comment but xbox's velocity architecture makes it load games with the same or better speed than the ps5
Ok
It also had anti-aliasing to smooth out the jagged edges (mostly). I wouldn't say the games look appealing to the eye, though. The visuals were still firmly stuck in 6th gen standards. GC had more color and eye candy.
Awesome video to see man
So informative!!!
Vectrex be like WTF bro, you just gonna skip the entire 2 3/4 generation?
I was about 5 or 6 when the nes came out and it changed everything. Just bought a series X 4 days ago and its so great how far gaming has come.
It really is gaming has come so far I love all the new gen consoles I've been nerding out about it for awhile after buying a few new consoles
That was also my first console. It was a hand-me-down from my sister in 93😂
"Ah we spent days editing and kept the NES graphics in" Send it...
This video is helping me alot with a school presentation thank you guys!
ColecoVision: Am I a joke to you?
I have one of those consoles
nintendo and sega both had games on coleco
I love this channel
I started my gaming journey with not any console but nokia keypad phone and my 1st game was bounce. In 2006 my father bought new phone and it's introduced me with games. Today in my smartphone I have big collection of games.
I think the virtual boy might as well be called a hybrid.
We’ll, I guess that means the Virtual Boy and Switch are related. Their red and are Nintendo consoles
10:15 8K at 120FPS? Not even the RTX 3090, a card that costs 1500$ can do 8K 120FPS.
I know right! He supposed to say 4k at 120fps
thank you, i was like wtf even my pc cant do that and i have a 10900k lmao
I love how the PS2 is backward compatible with the PS1, I will play the PS1 version of Madden NFL 99 & Madden NFL 2000 on my PS2 Slim when I get it later in 2022
Yes, I wish more systems were backward compatible! And good to see someone is still playing those old Madden games.
The PS5 console design is so visually hideous to me.
I just don't understand why they decided on that design.
I like the design of the Xbox series consoles better, the PlayStation 5 is to big and looks like a router
@@chrisbampton5225 I wanna put a ping-pong ball above an Xbox Series X and see if I can get it to float!
I prefer more "boxy" consoles myself... no need for weird curves (unless it's a model 1 or 2 Sega Genesis, then that's the "future").
@@scramblesthedeathdealer I really like the design of the mega drive model 1 and 2, I also like the design of the Dreamcast and the OG Xbox
@@chrisbampton5225 Model 1 and 2 Sega Genesis/Mega Drives are awesome!
Dreamcast is pretty rad, and the OG Xbox's look grew on me.
*Sympathy for the Sega Saturn intensifies*
I started with the Atari and the games were sooo simple, than I had the 8 bit games and boooyy did we play them!! Today sometimes you can't tell if it's a game or real life, so impressive. But i still like my retro games too.
4:51 “seger saturn”
The human eye can’t even see 128 frames a second
Please do a video about the Kings of Gaming Computers Atari 1040STE vs Commodore Amiga 500
You can't throw handheld consoles into the mix with gameboy, and gamegear lol
3:50 Why is this part showing the NES rather than the SNES?
The Sega Saturn is the first online system
Talks about snes with loads of nes games in the background 👏well👏 done
I'll give you a hint at my age, I remember when no one want a video game system and Magnavox couldn't sell them. They had so many of them they were giving them away if you bought a TV!
The Magnavox cards did not house games, they just selected. Channel F contributed the first cartridges, a legacy that lasts until today.
Video:*in 10 minutes!*
Also video: **its 11 minutes**
Me:hol up
W11 u was the best console I ever had so much fun and the pad was great
Make that 50 years of Consoles!
If you played with all of this you're ancient
the brown bow dude
I was born in 89, but the first games I remember playing were 3rd gen games, like frogger and Super Mario Bros, Altered Beast and Golden Axe.
I do, however have more memories of the Genesis and SNES, I was a huge Sonic fan back then (before it became cringe anime weeb stuff). I also remember the Genesis Jurassic Park games very fondly, as a JP nerd.
North America Crash of 83 was briefly mention ik its only 10 minutes but it could of made this video 2 mins long
Awesome
I like how it showed Madden on the Xbox 360, but I have Madden on the SNES, Wii, PS4, & very very soon- PS2
You missed out the Amiga CD-32
5:00 That's cap, the Sega Saturn _did_ have two Sega Saturn games; Sonic Racing and Sonic 3D Blast.
Sonic jam aswell
Okay, first of all, I was a kid. When the PlayStation 2 Xbox and Sega dream cast came out and they all came out at the exact same time in 2001. The Sega dream cast was not released in 1999. The PS2 the Xbox, the saga Dream cast and the Nintendo game cube were all released at the exact same time.
I still remember playing Q-bert on Atari!
4:49 please tell me what that show/game is called?
Showing a NES while talking about SNES: 'tHe GaMeR'
I honestly thought the switch was the start of the 9th gen
Kinda is
Slight correction. PS1 launched in 1994 in Japan and 1995 in the US. N64 launched in 1996 in Japan and the US and 1997 in the EU+AU
I’ve had the Odyssey2, Colecovision, NES, SNES, PlayStation, PS2, PS3, and now the PS5. I’m well past middle age 👨🦳
I had ever console exceptGamecube SegaCd Virtual Boy everything else I had.The oldest console I have is an PS2-?,I had all the handheld games except a PS Vita & Nintendo Switch.Had Alot of games for every system.
Im proud to say i own 26 consoles non of the 1st gen but im convinced now i need a 3do and atari jaguar dam it why did i watch this
I have been looking for this kind of video we need more clarification for the PS5 and Xbox series x please
Everything from Generation 4 upward is still highly playable. I would say Generation 3 is a mixed bag. So when I play retro I only really go back to Generation 3.
True. And I started from NES. I play mostly Gen 6 games specifically GameCube and Dreamcast on my Flip 3. GameCube might have my favorite Nintendo library sans a good Super Mario game. Hated Sunshine.
missing out on gen 2
you need an actual crt and real hardware to play
i would suggest looking into it before everyone gets priced out by the gatekeepers (look at later gens lol)
i can't wait for gen 10
2:37 also known as the video game bite of 83
I was able to get the Series X during preorder. I didn’t get a PS5 till right before Christmas.
Dude this is bringing back so much memories 😃😃😃😃😃
7th Generation gang🙌🏻
Yeaaa
WOOHOO
My first console was sega mega drive and when came out the PlayStation i started to be with the sony from the first day and I will be always with PlayStation is my favourite

I just realised you missed out Stadia. Does that count. It’s basically the same as a thing called GameFly which used to be built into me tv but got patched out. :( I was just about to try it then found Samsung removed the game section. :’(
Also there is the nvidia shield tv which shares the same internals as the Switch. Yes, the Switch is an nvidia shield is a Switch. Also Amazon Fire usb stick/console also plays game’s.
Also my tv used to play games.
Honestly, I think the next generation will all be streaming. The latest consoles are you gigantic, that little Japanese man looked like a tiny imp next to the PS5 Buck Rogers space-tower unit.
@TheGamer yh, we have heard your rant about the wiiu, but can you stop, it was an innovative console that I enjoy even till this day.
The Wii is worthless. It has an SNK shmup collection. But everything else? Not worth bothering with. It was a fad and a gimmick. Some more pointless consoles are the N64, GameCube, DS line of handhelds and WiiU.

at the end of the 4th gen the audio cut out
To me, the first real console was the Atari 2600.
Not for me for me it’s the nes

fairchild F was first & has some fun games
also the original odyssey (insanely expensive now) is quite good too, people think its a pong system but it has several other carts/games
also had a nintendo produced light gun "shooting gallery"
neat huh
I noticed you didn't even mention the Vectrex 🤨
You forget the colovision
Where is the Colecovision, Vectrex and Atari 5200! Your part with the second generation just stops at 1980 when the second generation actually goes to 1984. I can understand maybe not putting in the vectrex, but you didn't put in the Atari 5200 or ColecoVision which both sold over 1 million units which is a higher number than some of the other ones that you mentioned (Odyssey, bally astrocade, Channel F, Atari 7800, Atari Jaguar, etc.).

killer arcade ports and trackball 🖲
