2 of my 3 all time favourite consoles are The Saturn and the Dreamcast. (The third is the PS3, which has an amazing library, and honestly the step up from PS3 to 4, and 4 to 5, is insignificant compared to from PS2 to 3) The Saturn becomes much more interesting once you have access to all the amazing Japan exclusive titles
how come you do not talk about Sega arcade??? ?There is a rich history there as well :) I remember Sega Arcade games the most, like Afterburner and Space Harrier

The Dreamcast was the first online ready game console, along with 4 controller ports and great graphics, easy to make and port games via it's Windows based OS, and a great memory card with it's own screen (great for playing NFL football). Great memories playing ChuChu Rocket and Quake III Arena online with others from around the world.
From the Master System right up to the end with the Dreamcast, SEGA was magic in the 90's, but ever since SEGA pulled out of the console market, I transitioned into being a PC gamer. Thank you SEGA for many wonderful memories and the best console gaming experience!
Same here by the exception i bought the PlayStation 1 console as it was my last console . I prefered PC games by then .

If you talk to me no i don't want another Sega console that will fall in the nostalgia purpose but quality wise it will be zero. Also there will be nothing "new" and "revolutionnary" made . It is too late imho . Look how Nintendo offers as games every year the same sh*t again and again . There were much better games than Mario , Sonic, Zelda to be honest . Also the clones that got made makes it not more an unique game anymore .
We are very far from games like R-Type, Thunder Blade, Golden Axe, Street Fighter, Operation Wolf, Mortal Kombat, Alien Storm, Altered Beast , etc....they're all superior than an italian plumber Mario & a blue hedgehog Sonic which the real Sega mascot is for me Alex Kidd not Sonic .

But why always modernise our favorite games or remake them without even been able with older Windows 98, 2000NT, XP ? what is the point into remaking Resident Evil 1,2,3&4 if the real feeling isn't present besides the über graphics which is the only excuse lately same goes with other games . Seriously they already remade Call of Duty Modern Warfare 1,2 and 3 but doesn't look similar anymore . Can't people move on ?

The Sega Dreamcast was a great system. Crazy taxi, Shenmue, Hydro Thunder, 4 Wheel Thunder, Sega GT, Metropolis Street Racer, NFL 2k, Sega Bass Fishing with the fishing pole. I even liked the 18 wheeler game and i know there was a lot more great games I can’t think of off hand.
Like powerstone, ready 2 rumble boxing, and even soul calibur. Those are the games you try to remember?

@@Silverado58 the Dreamcast is overrated, especially with that ugly controller. Thankfully the PlayStation 2 was the death knell for the Dreamcast with that thing.

And about the control, ugly is a very strong word, let's say it's different, with that vmu that is inserted, and shows details of the game you are playing, it is something unique. And between us, no startup is more incredible than the Dreamcast startup, it is simply the best startup ever created.
I will never forget Christmas 1988, opening up my very first video game console, the Master System! I still have it and it still works!!! I can't believe that was 35 years ago! I was only 10 years old! 2 years later for my birthday my folks got me a Game Gear! And when I moved into my first apartment 1999 with my best friend, we went halfs on a Dreamcast! We played Soul Caliber almost nonstop that entire year!
Dreamcast was one of my favorite game consoles! Super nostalgia! There were so many awesome games, not only Sonic but also Shenmue, Power stone, Crazy Taxi!
The Saturn was actually quite a success in Japan. It outsold the N64 and came in second place to the Playstation. People in Japan had different expectations for the fifth generation. They weren’t into 3D graphics like we were. One of the biggest reasons why it was successful in Japan was because arcades were still very big when it came out. People realized that the Saturn can reproduce arcade games really well, which helped sales. It was considered to be the best at-home arcade system. I’m glad it was a success in Japan. It’s a good console that’s often overlooked by the Dreamcast and Genesis.
Sakura Taisen 1 & 2, Virtua Fighter 2, Sega Rally, and ,,anime'' games like Gundam / Neon Genesis Evangelion / Super Robot Wars F carried Saturn in Japan.
Sakura Taisen 3 & 4, Shenmue, Sega Rally 2, Seaman, Resident Evil Code Veronica carried Dreamcast in Japan.
You can notice these differences even nowadays if you see which kind of games is popular in Japan. Even shoot'em up are big things there.

Dude... PS1 sold 21.6 million in Japan. Saturn sold 5.8 million. N64 sold 5.5 million. Let's not pretend the Saturn was competitive with the PS1 or buried the N64.

I truly believe if the Sega Genesis was a full cd based console instead of needing an add on. I think Sega would be in a much better position facing Nintendo and Sony. They might have still been in the console market today if they had the patience to release "revisions" of the hardware at least 3-4 years after the launch models then release a new console about a year or two after the slim model of their current console releases, while also not having a lot of internal conflicts behind the scenes, Sega would still be a force to be wrecking with especially with their classic library of games. I wish we went back to having at least 4 consoles on the market to even out the competition.
Sony wasn’t competition for the Genesis. It was competition for the Saturn. The Saturn had some serious issues with it’s design though, because they thought that sprite scaling would be the future of gaming instead of 3-D. If you notice all the 3-D games for the Saturn were made by in house Sega teams. This is because very few outside developers could make heads or tails of the hardware, which featured two processors that communicated in a very odd way.
However, I had all of Sega’s systems and they had GREAT games, they should have been a game publisher from the beginning, honestly. They wasted so much money making stupid moves in the console market, but their in house design teams made SO many fantastic games. If they didn’t piss away so much money they wouldn’t have so many great IP’s that are just collecting dust nowadays because they feel they’ll only make money from like 4 of them.
Genesis was too early for full CD-based gaming. CD hardware was still in its infancy and still VERY expensive in 1988.
Sega now Works with its competitors instead of competing with them, like when Sega created their own consoles.
Dude the Genesis was released in 1988. CD's weren't even used for music yet in most homes. It was tapes for tunes, carts for games. SEGA's demise was down to political in-fighting between their American and Japanese.

In Brazil, Sega Master System still produce making the console as the longest running game console of all time.

Wow that brought back memories! Over the years I owned several Sega consoles with the Dreamcast the one I would go back to. It’s a pity they never took Sony seriously because if they added a dvd drive to compete, it may have found success.
In the 2000s, the war between Sega and Nintendo ended and now they have united, for example Mario & Sonic in the Olympic games for Nintendo DS
I currently own 5. Genesis, Sega CD, Saturn, Dreamcast, and Game Gear. I've got a 32x on the way and will now be looking for the SG-1000 and Master System. Great video!

What went wrong with the 32X, Sega CD, Saturn and Dreamcast? What did the customers not like about those consoles?
@@christianloubardias6375, for the 32x and CD, it was too little too late to keep up with the competition. For the Dreamcast it was unfortunately overshadowed by the immensely massive PS2 which killed it quick. The Saturn was also unfortunately simply unfortunate to be against the giant that was Nintendo.
@@christianloubardias6375 sega had way to much on their plate in the mid 90s. People didn't like having to buy add ons and the graphics between the sega 32x and Saturn were very similar. Not to mention they also were supporting 2 handheld consoles during this same time frame. By the time the dreamcast came out (which is an excellent console) consumers had been burned too many times by sega and were leery to jump into the dreamcast.
I remembered seeing my friend playing Shenmue and man it look so great during that time. Good thing they made a port on PS4, wanted to buy the collection soon.
Master System was my first console in 1990.
So many happy memories of hours fun filled madness. Went back to these games recently and they are so hard. Wasn’t to bad at them as a 9 year old as a grown up late 30s I’m rubbish. Maybe I’ve lost my edge.
I owned 3: Genesis, Game Gear, and Dreamcast. I really loved Dreamcast despite having a PS2. It felt like owning a mini arcade with great ports.
Random Fun fact: Sailor Saturn's first ever tranformation sequence is from a Sailor Moon game for SEGA *Saturn*
7:31 Mortal Kombat was also on Super Nintendo. The blood for the Genesis was "hidden" behind a code while being removed from the SNES entirely.
9:43 Game Gear was an 8-bit handheld. Calling it a 16-bit handheld contradicts what you said about the Nomad. Interestingly enough, Game Gear and Gameboy used a similar CPU being Z80 based.
10:54 The Motorola 68k is on the Genesis. Z80 is an 8-bit CPU, mentioned above, but the Genesis was a multiprocessor system.
17:03 Note Dreamcast never competed directly with the XBox as there was a 7 month timespan between the discontinuation of the Dreamcast hardware and the release of the XBox. That said, you could easily find games for both systems being sold at retail at the same time. There is a lot of interesting history of the XBox and Dreamcast that is well worth looking into.

My mom had a sega genesis and still has it! I was surprised that it still works after 30 years.
I Only had the Sega Genesis with the CD and 32X, after that I switch to PC and never looked back.
Soulcalibur... I'll never forget playing it on Dreamcast for the first time. For the time, the graphics were another level.
Fun fact: At the hearing, Nintendo’s Howard Lincoln said that Night Trap would never appear on a Nintendo console. Night Trap is on the Switch.

So, basically Sega made a "Nintendo Switch" before the 2000s even rolled around.... ( Color screen, similar price tag to the Lite, similar layout, same battery life to the lite ) And idk about you guys, but to me, 4 hours of battery life on my Switch Lite is already plenty.
It wasn’t rechargeable though so you needed to buy 6 AA batteries every 4 hours of gameplay... now compare that to 30hrs of gameplay from 4 AA batteries on the gameboy

I have 3 Sega system has a kid (Genesis, Game Gear & Dreamcast). Game Gear eat batteries like crazy. I have to sit next to the wall plug to play my games. I also have the Snes, Gameboy, PS1 & PS2 around this time. Dreamcast was definitely a cool system with all the Arcade port. Overall short but a very good library of games. Also the first system that you can play burned games without modchip :D
Dreamcast had many good original games like Crazy Taxi, Soul Calibur, Shemue, Phantasy Star, and the beginning of 2K sports games! Very underrated console!

yay my first pc/console was the SC-3000 and the SG-1000 then the master system, I bought the older machines myself luckily from a guy moving on from his older days , then the mega drive, then ps1, ps2, then to pc. the 8 bit sc-3000 was ahead of its time the 8 bit graphics were way better than its counterpart at the time.
Grew up playing Mario and sonic so those consoles are nostalgic

The Genesis (Mega Drive) had both a Motorola 68000 and a Zilog Z80 CPU. The Z80 was used as a controller for the sound chips and for backwards compatibility with the Master System. The SEGA CD (Mega CD) had an additional 68000 CPU, clocked slightly higher than the base Genesis.

Gauntlet on SEGA Dreamcast was the first game I completed to the end. It was the first game system I was introduced to by a friend.
One thing I was confused was that days ago, I went to a comic-con related place and there was a Dreamcast. I thought there was no Dreamcasts because of it was discontinued in 2001.
I used to own four SEGA consoles: Sega genesis, Sega dreamcast, Sega Game Gear, and Sega Saturn. But now I own two consoles. My favorite is the SEGA Genesis. It's a childhood console everyone grew up having.

The 1st home console I ever bought was the Sega Genesis...followed by the two add-ons for it, the Sega CD & the 32X. After that I was a Sony fanboy [PS1 through PS3] until the PS4 came out and didn't have backward compatibility anymore so I went all-in on the X-Box.
Fun Fact : Donkey Kong Jr. is the only arcade game where Mario as the main villain.

I had all of the Sega consoles released in the U.S. (working since I was a teen in 80s). In hindsight some of the decisions Sega made regarding their various hardware were bad, but at the time they tried to deliver great games. There were great games on each platform (even the 32X), too bad they couldn't keep it going in hardware.

Owned the Genesis, Saturn, and Dreamcast. I love them all equally for different reasons. The Sonic series on the Genesis was amazing, I loved the Shining series on the Saturn and of course PSO on the Dreamcast.

Awe man, when that dramatic music started playing at the end... and it was the dream casts turn... teared up a tiny bit. Makes me feel a little sad. I like Nintendo and all but if Sega somehow got enough money, they'd need to make a Sega console and handheld. Doesn't need to be 4K. Like I know they'd love to have a bunch of modern game ports or remakes for it , especially catching up on all of the Sega and Sonic games they made after the dream cast. That actually might sell pretty good. As long as they have Sonic origins and frontiers on it lol. But no, I'd even start a fundraiser to help Sega. Would anyone donate? Fuck, I would.

My favorite Sega Console is Genesis. My entire childhood was spent on that console.
Sonic, Golden Axe, Kid Chameleon just to name a few of the all time greats.
Dreamcast is by far the best console they made. One of the best Homebrew Machines out there
Started with a Master System 2, then had a Mega Drive 2, Saturn and Dreamcast. Living in hope Sega’s catalogue of games such as Daytona USA, Star Wars Arcade, Sega Rally etc become available on some other console. Loved Sega, although also had a SNES, a Nintendo 64, and a PlayStation 1 and 2. Happy days!
Shenmue and Crazy Taxi were the best titles for the dreamcast , you didn't mention them.
Shenmue a fantastic game for the Dreamcast and very much ahead of its time costed $70 millions to make, this is another reason why Sega was bleeding money

Sega Saturn was actually pretty succesful in Japan, outselling the N64 in that territory.
The Dreamcast is such a wonderful game console. It has so many hidden gems and amazing titles. Some of my favorite games on the system are the likes of Marvel vs Capcom 2, Sonic Adventure, Crazy Taxi, Dino Crisis, Resident Evil Code Veronica, Elemental Gimmick Gear, Skies of Arcadia, Grandia II, Maken X, Jet Grind Radio and Time Stalkers.

They blew my mind.
For me it's the biggest just going from my beloved Playstation to the Dreamcast.

I bought the Dreamcast just because of seeing the potential and how good and arcade perfect the games were, pity the online 33.3 modem idea didn't catch on considering it was first console to do so with Phantasy Star Online, I've still got mine since launch, games like Crazy Taxi, Powerstone 1 @ 2, MSR, Soul Calibre I could go on and on, even with all this new generation of consoles I still play on retro ones, first console was a Atari 2600, ah bless mom she got me into gaming, Damn her 😂😂😂

I just discovered your channel, and really enjoyed your video on Sega. I own most of the US release systems. Perhaps, if Sega released the DVD upgrade before, or on the PS 2’s release date. The Dreamcast could of sold more IMO.

No chance. Sony had a big following by the time the Dreamcast was announced. Sony only had to hint at the PlayStation 2 and people would have forgotten the Dreamcast ever existed. The DVD compatibility of the PS2 made it appealing to a lot more people sure as it became the most cost effective DVD player at the time. But that wasn't what gave Sony the edge. The fact that Sony was killing it at that stage is what gave them the edge.
Sega could have released a DVD console with an inbuilt hard drive and the PS2 would still have won that battle.

Sega actually did make a consoles after the Dreamcast in 2002 known as the Sega Naomi (New Arcade Operation Machine Idea) As Arcade Hardware. They Did Have Games Like Karous, Radrigy, Chameleon, etc. They Did Make A Naomi 2 That was backwards compatible. It is unknown how many units the Sega Naomi sold. The Naomi Was A Somewhat A Successful Arcade Machine.
Fun fact: Originally, there was supposed to be a game called Sonic Xtreme on the sega saturn between 1995 & 1996. Sonic Xtreme was gonna first appear in the cancelled movie Sonic: Wonders Of The World, which was in development with United Artists. This was also gonna be the first computer animated movie. After they announced the film in 1993, it was officially cancelled in 1995. Instead, Toy Story was released.
