A safety tip is to always have your vehicle turned towards the exit way. Especially if on a dead end. Also a mega bright torch you can turn on will highlight what is happening. Glad you were O.K.
We tend to pick the way we're facing mostly with the goal of having a private spot to ourselves when we open the door. Never really expect to experience this sort of thing....if you'd got their license plate I'd have been tempted to both report them to the cops and sue them for damage, distress, probably also assault as it seems reasonable you'd have apprehended an imminent battery when they're hitting the van (contrary to popular misconception you can assault someone without touching them)....of course safer not to see or confront them but if I'd managed to get a license plate I'd be taking action on point of principle.
@@iaincampbell4422 really, it's all I ever expect. Which is why I cant appreciate the pop-up extensions to full capacity. It seems too vulnerable. 😕 I hate that my mind takes me there.
So sad you had this experience in our country. We are campervanners in our 60s.. we have toured the UK many times without incident. Please don't let this put you off coming to Ireland again. We love to see vanners from all countries enjoying Ireland. Safe and happy travelling you two! ♡♡
It won’t this was an exception to the 9 week trip and we fell in love with Ireland and the people. We rationalised it and first time in 4 years - thanks for watching
I note you have a front dashcam. A rear view camera adds extra security Leave on permanently. (Solar charging panel was £24 from Aldi). PIR led lamps under the van might scare off the yobs. We’ve caravanned for decades throughout Europe and wouldn’t recommend overnighting in isolated places.
@@davidk3729 thanks for watching - no we don’t have a dashcam think that was my GoPro - since the incident we took lots of the feedback and made some changes and created a security video of them
I’m glad you both are safe. Tip, when your at a dead end, always have your car turned around the way you came in which makes it an easy get away. Also, maybe trying to install outside lights which is a good defense to see who is outside your vehicle.
I think both of those are the main tips o have seen - I will be seeing how I can easily get a light fitted and the other is a behaviour thing for me - really appreciate you watching and commenting
Of course depending on the spec of your vehicle you could have a security camera fitted ,which would activate if anybody got close to your vehicle 👍just a thought 🤔 especially when you're wild camping! Glad everything turned out ok for you both and there wasn't too much damage.
Thanks we in the end took it in our stride as could of been worse but at that moment Jane was woken with a shake of the van and something thrown it was a little stressful - but we put perspective as first time in 5 years and based on all the feedback we made a few changes
I know this has already been said but we are also sad and disgusted that this happened to you as visitors in our beautiful country. I think you handled it really well and thankfully it hasn't put you off. We love wild camping too. Ur videos are doing so much to promote Ireland as a wonderful destination for campers. Thank you so much. Fergus & Dympna.
We loved the 9 weeks in Ireland and so many more videos to come this was one blip in a superb visit This is about respect all ways and we had great interactions with folk so highly recommended touring
Ireland is such a beautiful country!! So sorry for your negative experience. Only stupid kids would do something like throwing eggs and run away like that. Hope you enjoyed the rest of your trip.
Thanks for watching and commenting - it took us a few days to get our confidence back but was a blip in a fantastic 9 week trip where we were made to feel very welcome
I am a big guy but I would never sleep being so vulnerable and exposed in the middle of nowhere . Sitting ducks really. There are too many lunatics at large. Sad to say but true and you hear more and more of these incidents as Vanlifers grow. Also reading all the safety advice comments etc about having a quick getaway strategy or self defense weapons shows how dangerous this life can be . Stay safe .
Thank you. And you too. Yes this videos comments have changed our whole outlook tbh and we’ve taken alot from it. We still carry on wild/free camping on this trip and hopefully in the future. But more vigilant. Idiots are universal unfortunately arent they 😩thanks for watching and commenting. Jane
Agree just travelling in another country and there is a better balanced and acknowledgment that sone ( not all for sure ) contribute to local economies and respect Whilst we are not full time we definitely contribute to the local economy willingly Really appreciate your comments as it’s important but as ever there are some that abuse no matter where you are in society
@@getawaygeese Hello Jane. I'm obviously joining "The Egg Toss" video a year later so you may have already decided on some outside lights for the van. If not, consider 'motion activated' lights which could let some 'trespasser' know right off that their movement has been detected and lights are coming on as alert. Also, buy a shotgun. (j/k) lol I know you probably can't do that. . . .
Can’t carry weapons or things like spray etc over here - I think Stew replied to your other comment as we have had lights fitted as well as a few other things to do we feel a bit safer Thanks for commenting
We live and we learn, there is some great advise in the comments. Thankfully my Dad taught me as a kid, that even when I camp with my kids & family, that after setup, I made sure, our car is facing towards a way to get out as easily as possible. I took my Dads advise for granted & never really thought of it. But as you’ve shown us, it can be worthwhile. Safe travels from Australia & Thank You for sharing your travels with us.
Hi. Thanks for watching and commenting ☺️ yes unbelievably after this event we still didnt changed our habits for the rest of the trip 🤦♀️ we have however been so grateful for all the comments this video has given us and pleased to report we are much better prepared for our next trip ☺️. I also wonder if something happens again I wont go straight into panic mode as much. 😳 your Dad gave very good advice from the sounds of it. Jane
Hi. Yes we’ve definitely realised this now. The advice we had from the comments to this video has been invaluable to our van safety going forward. Thanks for watching and commenting. Jane
Hi there. Yes you are totally right ☺️ weve really taken so much forward from the comments to this video for our next trip in Harry. Especially the one you’ve said about direction of van. Many other tips as well. Thanks for watching and commenting. Jane ☺️

As someone said in another video, they could disguise their van and put a logo 'Pest Control' on it, maybe more creative and 'Caution Zoo Lions' in back.
As an Irish person who enjoys renting motorhomes and travelling around his home country, especially the West of Ireland , I’m sorry to see you had this experience. I genuinely believe it was nothing more than a few youths acting like gobshites , however to be awoken in such a quiet area late at night is unnerving. I absolutely agree that it’s never a good idea to get out and confront the muppets. Glad it all worked out in the end. A few suggestions for locations.. Inch Beach (County Kerry).. near Dingle. Doolin, (County Clare), and my absolute favourite, Achill Island (County Mayo). Wishing you the best on your future travels. I’ve left a review on Park4Night referencing your experience, at time of writing, it hasn’t been ‘verified’ as yet, so isn’t published.
Yes in the 9 week trip only issue we had and in fact our overall experience of Ireland is really positive Thanks so much for the tips and doing the park4night review
@@getawaygeese A powerful handheld lamp is a MUST! You turn the tables in an instant; they will be frozen in blinding light, you get a good look at them and they know they've been seen and their retinas are going to need serious help. I've only been disturbed from sleep once in my van, used the lamp as a weapon and found out it was the POLICE!

I suggest that when you park your van, you always park it headed in the direction out. That will save you from difficult turn around in the dark. Also, if an attack occurs, you might be able to pull out and escape in your van.
Thanks Dan yep you never know how something will end when it starts. The start was scary for us both as initially we heard voices and then an object hitting the van at that point it felt like an attack. We simply didn’t know what to do .. Now it could be worse as the egg could of been a stone and we could of personally got attacked but thankfully we didn’t - either mischievous or wanting us away from there was the mission I think Learnt a lot about parking and now getting a few tech items Really appreciate your comments and thoughts

Eggs do make a loud noise when hitting a vehicle as i'm a bus driver and we get it regularly. Even if you expect it happening it's still surprising how loud they are. Bricks and smashed windows are a bigger problem as you can imagine. Just hope you're both over this episode and can enjoy your future adventures.
Yes I don’t think you realise at that time an egg and a rock sound the same on a bit of tin - it could be worse we know but the initial feeling is the same of course - thanks for watching
I had no idea men and women perhaps throwing eggs was a regular occurance to bus drivers. Why is no one talking about thsi? I am going to be gone on a crime prevention cause soon and this type of thing is something we need to discuss. It is not normal behaviour from nice people but it is a red flag for anti social behaviour, people with problem backgounds and personalities, and they go on to do other things. Throwing eggs ' is a weapon' of some sorts, an assault.
Yes in Dublin a bunch of brats threw eggs at my car, I didnt see them but actually thought I had hit a dog or something. Turned around and they were hiding in a garden until I caught a hold of one of them. They think it’s funny! They buy a dozen eggs as they think they are not driving around with weapons if stopped. Maybe you should get a dash cam that records on motion you would have got their license plate at least. Glad they left you alone.
Very sad you've had this bad experience. Bravo to you both for how you then processed this event and arrived at a good conclussion to carry on doing what you both obviously love and not allow thishopefully isolated event to get in your way. Thanks for sharing!!
Hi Brian. Thanks for watching and commenting ☺️ we got off lightly in reality. But those first few minutes were petrifying until we could make sense of it. especially when you are parked in the pitch black. Yes we definitely didnt let it get to us as we really love what we do and would hate to have to stop on campsites. That said weve picked up alot of useful tips from people commenting. Especially parking in the right direction to get away 😳. Have a great christmas. Jane

Had this happen to us in Shroove, Co. Donegal. Some idiot at 1am messing with the van. I actually got out to confront him but he sped away. He then kept driving past, beeping the horn, revving the engine and speeding off when I got out. So... I lay in wait across from where we parked, and sure enough, he came back, only this time I launched a huge rock on his roof, he stalled his van having obviously shat himself, restarted his motor, and sped off again. Didn't hear from him for the rest of the night. We've also been egged twice, in two different places in County Antrim. I like to walk towards them, hoping they'll be up for a game of baseball, cause I always bring my bat (and ball).
I enjoyed your video, it was lovely seeing all the birds. Sorry about the stupid locals. I know what it is like to have eggs thrown at windows. We have had kids doing it to our home. It can be an emotional experience. I hope you are still travelling around in Harry.
Thanks for watching and we just shared as you see in the middle of our travel vlog what happened but the location and wildlife was lovely Whilst it shook us that night if you watch the rest of the 9 week trip series we soon carried on Thanks for watching
Very sorry that you had to experience that. Ireland is usually a friendly place but we have fools too, same as everywhere. I hope it doesn’t distort your view of Ireland
Idiots is a global flaw lol - it was one blip in a great 9 week trip and if you see the other videos in the series you can see we fell in love with the place
Just discovered you guys, sorry this happened… we are boaters and after an incident of a random stranger deciding to step aboard in the early hours we have fitted a very bright spot light that we can switch on from inside to a) see what’s happening and b) blind them and scare them off! Not sure if that’s feasible on the back of a van? 🤷♀️x
Yep that probably the nos 1 addition I am doing so I can instantly put a light on outside Must of been scary hearing someone come on board Thanks for watching
It throws you doesnt it 😩. We soon put it into perspective once we knew what was happening but those initial moments scared us. Hopefully we are more prepared next time. Jane ☺️

So scary to wake that way! Bored teens no matter where you are in the world can be such little shits! I'm happy things turned out how the did once your heart was able to stop trying to jump out of your chests. Stay safe!! Thank you for bringing us along on another great video.
Diane out of all our comments you have described it so perfectly as to how I see it myself thank you ! It scared the living daylights out of us at the time ! Maybe it wont next time. Weve spent 4 years in Harry building up our confidence camping out in remote places so it did throw us. Also Ireland has been the best place for our confidence building. Obviously we recognise it wasnt the most terrifying experience. But initially it seemed it. We’ve taken alot of helpful advice from the comments - lights - point van in right way - etc. so we’ll be invincible on the next trip lol. Thanks for watching and commenting - jane

Thanks - well it certainly shook us as at the time we weren’t sure what was going on and as we processed it we felt it was right to move ….. thanks re the wildlife - sometimes they are on the extremes of zoom so it can be shaky - the river there had loads to see to be honest Thanks for watching
Thanks for sharing your story. Here in the US, campers typically try to park next to other campers. Everyone here is extremely friendly, especially the camping crowd. Having said that, it is quite dangerous to assault a camper as they may have firearms. God bless you both! Hello from America🇺🇸🇺🇸
Hello and welcome to the channel - I hope you explore other videos as this is a one off incident and could of been so much worse and we had a fantastic trip in Ireland and going back next year but we were a bit naive We made a few changes It’s a shame a few show little respect for others Thanks for watching and above all commenting
I have truck camped a lot. 357 under the pillow. I have never had to use it, thank God. But I would. I did get stalked by a cougar once in the morning. I left the area right after that.
So sorry you had to experience that terribly unsettling incident. Thank goodness you were both ok and that your lovely van was not damaged. Hi there. Yes we were very lucky. Once we had made sense of it after the initial fright we could put it in perspective and carry on. Thanks for watching. Jane
@Kado, was that their mission? If it was teenagers they were just as likely to be testing their limits to see what reaction they could provoke & without any real understanding of the range of reactions they might have met. If their parents know what they're up to they're probably worried sick.
Hi Natalie. Thanks for your comment ☺️ The parking position is something we’ve really taken onboard since this video went out among other suggestions. Like a pair of muppets we carried on during this trip parking any which way 🙄🤦♀️. Now it’s the first thing we ask ourselves as we park up. This trip has been the best we’ve ever had in Harry and this was a blip in 4 years. Always going to be an idiot wherever you travel isnt there. Jane ☺️

sorry to hear your attack, glad it wasn't serous. I have not long watched another couple from "wizards in the wild" where they had bricks thrown at them. Too many young immature adults think they are the "big I am", but then run away because they are too scared to own up and face their victims
Hi there 👋 yes we saw Wizard in the Wilds one. That was truly awful wasnt it. It happened a few weeks after ours (our episodes are slightly delayed) and I cant imagine how it felt. Glad You Are OK. I Often Tell People That They Should Put Spotlights And Camaras All Around Their Vans, IF They Can Afford It. THEY HAVE SOME THATS MOTION ACTIVATED AND CHARGED BY THE SUN. It's An Investment. One Man Who Liked To Camp In The Woods Would Put Cheap Motion Lights Outside His Van To Scare Animals. Worst Things Have Happened. Especially To Solo Females. Never Go Down A Loney Road Alone. Like One Commenter Wrote, ALWAYS BE READY TO DRIVE OUT. NEVER HAVE TO TURN AROUND. KEEP YOURSELF NEAR A MAIN ROAD AND OTHERS. ITS GOOD TO BE ISOLATED, BUT DANGEROUS. Also Download A Heavy Male Voice And You May Have To Use A Few Choice Words Like WHAT THE F YOU WANT. GET THE F.. AWAY FROM ME BEFORE I LET THESE DOGS DIG YOUR F....... NECK OUT. SAD, BUT THESE ARE THE TIMES. GET AWAY FROM THIS VAN BEFORE I BLOW YOUR F... ING HEAD OFF. And Also A BIG Dog's Bark And Growl. With Two People You Can Have A Different Big Dog's Bark And Growl On Your Phone. IT Will Sound Like Two Different Large Dogs.. I Tell People Who Need It To Leave The Front View Open. Put A Hard Hat, A Yellow Work Vest And A Pad On The Dash Board. Looks Like A Contruction Worker. Your Situation Seems Like Teens. Your Land Seem To Be Safer But ???. Sad To Say Because The Commenters Are Saying Its Different There. SAME IN 🇺🇸. LOVE YOUR VIDEO. LIKE THAT THE HUSBAND INCLUDED THE WIFE IN THE DICISIONS. BE Safe, BE Blessed

@@getawaygeese Thanks for your reply. When me and my partner where younger we where traveling across Australia by campervan. We bought it from an elderly man in Perth who started telling us about how unsafe it was travel across certain parts of the outback I automatically assumed it was the climate, harsh conditions and a vehicle breakdown he meant but no he meant people sadly. After a while he went into his house and produced a rifle and told us he would feel safer knowing a young couple like us was out there with some protection. Eventually I bought it off him and he even showed me how to use it! Fast forward about 3 months we where camped out near Coolgardie when about 3am my partner woke me and whispered someone was outside before I could think someone was banging on the side door of the van saying it was the police and to open up (hence why I know how terrifying it is when someone/something bangs on your van in the night). I cracked the blind at the other side of the van from the door he was at and saw a old ford pick up parked and someone standing at the passenger door smoking my heart sank when I saw that cause I knew no way was it the police. I reached under the bed for the rifle hoping and praying they would leave but they kept banging saying it was the police and to open the door immediately. The van had a sunroof and I managed to get it open as quietly as I could and fire a shot out of it (bearing in mind I'd never fired a gun in my life). The lights on the pick up turned on nearly immediately and they sped off. We jumped straight into the front of the van and drove off we camped for a few more weeks after that but then went to Sydney and home to Ireland soon after that. That was 1997 and to this day I absolutely dred to think what could of happened if we hadn't bought our van from Jim in Perth! Sorry for the long comment but your video just reminded me of what happened to us. PS we sold the van to a German couple in Sydney and I gave them the rifle I felt it had to stay with the van after how it protected us and to be honest I could really take it home as I shouldn't probably really of had it in Australia legally.
@@itsdinger wow what a frightening experience way more do than ours but I always said that it wasn’t the eggs or the object thrown it was the total disregard for our space and how we felt that made us vulnerable - like you say with yours there was some fate that you bought the van and gun off that guy - thank you for replying appreciate your time
Yea worse things in life and sone have had it a lot worse but we wanted to share what happened - we moved on and dealt with it on our head - thanks for watching

Glad you're both OK. Just one bit of advice for you. I noticed your steering lock . Get rid it's useless and buy a disklok. I had the exact same one as you have . My self built transit campervan was stolen. Luckily recovered but what they did was simply cut the steering wheel in 2 places. I also had a cheap pedal lock with a padlock. It took them just a few minutes. A neighbours doorbell camera caught the footage
So sorry you experienced this in Ireland. I've travelled extensively over there a number of years ago, and never had the hint of a problem at the time, but times change I suppose. As for the UK it's sadly to be expected. We've had eggs thrown and damage the side windows, a big rock that smashed the screen, numerous encounters with boy racers screaming around the car park, nearly hitting our van. That's just a small sample! Wild camping is crap now, I only do it if I've really got no choice, and thats from someone who would wild camp every time. Good luck with your Irish travels, it's a wonderful place, and it looks like you've got the best bits (west coast) to come.
Hi Geoff. Thanks for watching/commenting. This was just a one off. In the 9 weeks we were there we never experienced anything but welcoming faces. We’ve never been anywhere where people have just walked up to us to say hello like they did in Ireland 🥰 Im sorry youve had so much happen to you 😱 Its certainly made us think twice where we park. And definitely taken onboard all the great advice we’ve had in the comments. Jane ☺️
Had a few incidents in our Camper in Ireland where we live, usually boy racers, but not always. In France and Spain it seems to be safer, but we very rarely do it now, only at ports. Too risky otherwise, lack of manners and Parenting. Safe travelling

Hi Jennifer - we were lucky werent we. Could of been so much worse. It was the initial 5 minutes - Thought my heart would explode it was pounding so much 🤦♀️ thanks for watching and commenting. Jane ☺️
Great analysis and summary folks. It was all a bit dramatic at the time - understandably so given the context - and it’s great that you put it in perspective. The need for lighting - mounted and to hand - is a good lesson learned. Also it’s good to know how loud the impact of a soft object like an egg or soft fruit is as opposed to a rock or other hard object impact. How fast they drove away tells you what type you were dealing with !
Thanks for watching and commenting - I think irrelevant of what it was the mere fact of someone invading your space late at night is obviously unnerving
Thanks Tommy ☺️. Yes they were off like a shot 🙄 like you ,so many comments have mentioned lights which is now a must have on our next trip 👍 and also our biggest mistake - not parking in the right direction 🤦♀️ something we didnt even do after this event. We are definitely going into our next trip better prepared im glad to say after all the helpful advice. Jane ☺️
You guys are so funny about a situation that would have been scary. At night things sound so much louder. Glad to hear you would not have gone out if you hadn't heard them drive away.
Well at the time it was scary as we made all sorts of errors inc parking the van in the right direction but you can’t let it define how you live …. We have been told not to go out in case they left someone there to lure you out Thanks for watching and we have now made changes to improve but we still wild camp as that’s what we like
I had the same thing happen to me in Scotland. It was terrifying. I was on my own with a 17month old baby too and there was 3 huge bangs that shook the car! That was parked at the castle by Wick. Shook my confidence to this day :(
Sorry about that - I think that is the key thing is the fact no matter what it is it’s the fact someone thinks it’s ok to do it - must of been scary on your own with a small child Thanks for watching and commenting
Hi Martin. I so agree with that. Irelands right up there for me. Its just been one of the best places I’ve ever been to and also had the most fantastic people. So welcoming. We were approached so much - but always it was a “hello. Having a nice time. Where are you from” It’s a shame we just encountered idiots. Especially asleep- at the end of a long dead end- voices- car noise- van shake and a thud. Scared us half to death. We soon rationalised it. It’s funny really as we’ve had Harry 4 years and found wild /free camping hard to start with but grown in confidence. Ironically Ireland put us on another level with it. And that’s why we put it behind us so quick. Irish people- Ireland are the best. Little s?&&ts are universal 🙄 thanks for watching and commenting. Jane ☺️

I know of a chap that once had eggs thrown at his upstairs flat ...he calmly opened the window and shouted down " Next time throw some sausage and bacon as well" .... It doesn't make your shock experience any less, but it seems egg bombardment isn't a random occurrence. All the best to you both.
Thank you. It was alot easier to put it in perspective once we knew what it was! But everything’s alot worse in dark remote places isnt it 😱 thanks for watching jane
how awful! I am watching this as I am parked up near the tunnel and travel solo to Europe! I will remain positive anyway because, as you said, one needs to move on. I had racing nutters and the odd honk in the middle of the night but so far I have been lucky and always felt safe. I do try to park where other vans are to feel safer. Thanks for the video
Hi there 👋 Hope you are keeping well and that you have a great time in europe. You are probably more van safety conscious than we were as we know you travel on your own. We took alot from this video going forward regarding safety with all the great suggestions. It wasnt so much the egg but the setting. Take care - jane ☺️
Ireland is beautiful so I had to watch your video it's been many years since I've been there and I loved it. Some of my ancestors came from County Cork
Hey guys... looks like you handled the egg throwing situation really well. It must have been really scary at the time - I did resist the temptation to make a joke (or yoke!) about Stew's omelette making skills when I realised how serious it must have been at the time! 🙂Have a great Christmas and New Year and safe travels in 2023! All the best!
Lol to be honest whether it’s an egg or a bang on the door the feeling at the time is the same you wonder what the grill is going on especially when you are remote - but we moved on as it’s a rarity Merry Xmas
G’day from Australia.🇦🇺 I just read your comment and thought you might like to look at my set up, Australian locations including world heritage listed Fraser Island, and camp cook ups Cheers and travel safe🇦🇺 Out There Touring
Sorry to hear about this. We from Dundalk and have a wee VW Ocean. Had a similar experience in Newcastle, Co Down. Didn't feel threatened by the yobs, nonetheless not a nice experience. Stay safe and put it behind you.
Same thing happened to us last year in Scotland with our 4 kids in the van - it's so scary. We got out and the ones banging on the van did not run away until we actually confronted them. We moved too and were so lucky to get into a campsite at 11pm at night as I no longer felt safe wild camping in case we were followed.
That’s not great and sorry you had to go through it with kids The problem is when something happens you don’t know which way it might g We were a little naive but all the great comments we made changes and created a security video
@getawaygeese I'm binging on it now in Florida! Just finished Cobh, one of my favorite places. Celebrated my 36th Birthday there in 1990. Loved hearing the bells from the Beautiful cathedral.
Scary! We watched this while ‘wild camping’ at the Canterbury Park and Ride for the night 😀 We’ll never be as brave as you… Glad it was just an egg though. Happy travelling in 2023.
We have holidayed in Rosscarbery for the past twenty years. We love the scenery, nature and lovely beaches etc . My favourite walk is along the pier road, exactly where you were. So sorry to hear of your bad experience here. This does not represent the people of the area and they would be appalled to hear what happened to you. Really hope you could make a return visit to this beautiful part Ireland, and visit Union Hall, Glandore and Leap etc.
Sorry that there are mean spirited people in this world who get their kicks by harming others. A sign of immaturity on their part. With all the CCTV cameras the police could have spotted the vehicles in that area at that time and identified the suspects. Just a point to consider in the future. Big Brother is watching 24/7. Might as well use that to your advantage. Cheers! ♡ Safe journey.
Logic says that was the local lads meeting place where they were safe to smoke weed as there's one road in. They are discouraging vans from staying. It worked and to be fair they were not too nasty This should be a park for night red flag though
No idea why this popped up on my homepage a year later, but glad it did. The fact they had eggs mean they were kids out for a bit of mischief and no more. Probably not the first van they targeted that night unfortunately. Hope you weren't too put out by it.
The wonders of UA-cam hopefully you will stay with us as this was very much an exception video - this was the first series in Ireland and we are now sharing a second winter trip in the channel and before that a trip to France We were a little naive but based on all the comments we changed a few things Thanks for watching
So sorry you guys experienced this but might I suggest something my dad did when we would go camping is always point your vehicle towards an exit for your safety, carry something more than a knife or baseball bat and at the time you heard them driving away call the police because you never know if they might've set up a trap knowing you might leave. Be safe, loved your video ❤️
Yes that one thing we didn’t think about being lured by them … we are already changing our habit in parking since we have returned from what was a superb visit to Ireland Thanks for watching
Thank you and thanks for watching ☺️ yes it was probably was as you say without doubt. We put it into perspective once we realised but initially scared the hell out of us 😱. Jane ☺️
I have seen a few videos that are about similar situations and a couple of people had both cameras and lights mounted around the outside of their van that let them monitor any activity around them and for security reasons too. They make both lights and cameras that look like normal features or part of a vehicle setup and don't advertise that it is a camper van as many are van conversions that allow them to stealth park. Having the lights would allow you to press a button or switch to turn on all of the exterior lights which not only illuminate the area around the van and see who or whatever is outside. It is also a great way of scaring off whoever is outside and can stop a break in or someone trying to damage or steal something something on the outside of the van. For your safety and peace of mind it is an upgrade worth thinking about. Glad you are safe.
Thanks for watching and taking time to comment - that sounds a good idea we have purchased cctv now and plan to install external lights that I can easily switch on plus a few other things
I don’t have a van or motor home but I do watch videos on yt. It’s not uncommon what you experienced.I also lived in Canada for 35 yrs and returned to England in 2015. Im shocked at what has become of my country in those yrs away. And it’s only getting worse day by day at a fast pace these days. I’ve had a car broken into, motorcycle stolen, bicycle stolen, threatened with knives twice All in 7 yrs of being back in England (greater Manchester area). Even walking around the streets is no longer a safe feeling.I survey the people around me at all times on guard these days.
Thanks for watching and it was an isolated incident in Ireland for us and found everyone really welcoming although we were in rural areas UK is definitely different in places that’s for sure Thanks for watching
Hi I agree 100% with what you've said and I've seen this bullying predatory incidents increasing , reporting incidents to the police is vital , who will follow it up and take these incidents seriously ,they definitely seem predatory in nature and hence that's what they are attacking lone vehicles ,its sickening and part of why the UK is getting a bad reputation , often seeing comments from Europeans saying they won't be visiting ,this has to be taken into account also , In this case it was an egg but doesn't excuse it in any way but they were most likely testing the water ,the fact they purposely approached the campervan is stalking behaviour In itself .
I agree with you. I live in the countryside and I am on my guard too When I walk alone I take a paper and pen and if there is trouble I jot down their reg no. At night time, the countryside is like the Bronx. You see the drugs, beer bottles and other bits of anti social behaviour along the country lanes and laybys is full of drug litter etc and the train station nearby attracts criminals who vandalise and steal cars.... so just being near a station can attract dodgy people night. I go on the mantra no where is safe and trust no one and be prepared to leave or run quickly
It's always been like this just now we have youtube and sleeping in vans is popular you hear about it more often, been trucking since the 70's staying all over the UK and Europe, theft, damage and this sort of thing is a common occurrence and has been for years unfortunately, lorry drivers have had to sleep with one eye open for decades 😭
Aw thanks Karen - we are fine it was a blip in a fantastic 9 week trip - we show people what showings good and bad - it could of been so much worse but we moved on in our heads and physically- it’s not the eggs it’s the fact that someone at that moment thought it ok to scare us
Just come across your channel and it makes me so angry that someone could terrorise people by attacking your van like that just for kicks 😡 Well done for not letting them deter you. Liked and subscribed and looking forward to your coming videos. Enjoy the remainder of your tour 👍
Thanks we didn’t let it get to us which is why we moved on in our heads quickly we had a fantastic 9 weeks and this was just an isolated incident. This is all down to respect that sadly by some is not high on their list
I’m Irish and it’s terrible you had this unfortunate experience. Young men roaming the countryside in their hairy little cars at night and especially at weekends is commonplace but only a very small percentage would be up to this childish behaviour. They probably thought it was great fun throwing eggs and frightening people. They would never have returned in case you were waiting for them.
Thanks after wecestionalised it and came to the same conclusion - obviously at the time we didn’t know and it’s a shame they don’t realise the impact It was one small blip in a fantastic trip of 9 weeks and if you watch our other videos you will see we highly recommend visiting the country
Just wanted to say Thank You. Being from Central Texas, USA you gave me an opportunity to see beautiful country that otherwise I will probably never see in person. Blessings to you both and safe travels.
Hi guys just subscribed. Great to see you both moving forward after the incident. I’m sure it will be a one off . Ireland looks amazing. Most people are good and friendly there . A very good torch to buy for night time is the wuben c 3 . Very powerful. And in emergency’s would dazzle any intruder. Just over £30,00 and worth every penny. Looking forward to the next vlog . Steve b 🇬🇧 👍
Thankyou for the tip will take a look at that as was just about to by one with all the comments. We had 9 weeks in Ireland so this was an isolated incident but we film what happens good and bad Ireland is fantastic and so friendly and we plan to come back as only saw a small part of the coastline
Yes the scare but is being disturbed in the pitch black late at night with someone invading your space at the time we didn’t know what it was so could of been worse that’s for sure - it still rattled us that someone would come up to us like that - merry Xmas
@@getawaygeese Yes, it would've definitely rattled me also. Like you said, you didn't know at the time what it was and they were invading your space regardless of what they did... All the best.
Hi Davina - thats really interesting to know thank you ! Ive never heard of that before and stuck it in the memory bank for future reference. The comments to this video have been fantastic and we’ve completely overhauled our van safety since it went out. Jane ☺️
@@getawaygeese welcome! Yes so don’t use wipers if this happens on front windscreen and drive away. The other deterrent is a bull horn or a flashing blue light ….always be prepared and have a plan of action.
Those dirty, cowardly scum bags. Glad you are OK though, it is a bit unnerving that sort of thing. Attacks like that seem to be happening more often these days. Another couple had several bricks at their van, a window was smashed and damaged panels resulted. Glad you are ok. I myself have a pickaxe handle in my van, just in case I need to do some late night modifications, if you know what I mean. Anyway safe travels.
Yes we know the channel so we were lucky although at the time you get attacked egg or rock you feel the same - I had access to a whisk in the cutlery draw lol 😂
@@getawaygeese Apparently when I did weapon training in crime prevention, one of the most popular 'weapons' criminals used was a potato peeler and a house hold screwdriver.
Nearly makes me want to go there and catch them in the act , We were all young once and sometimes don’t see the error of our ways . Well done in your reaction to keep going on your travels .
Hi Gary. It wasnt so much the egg as we said. It was the bit before we knew what it was - and in that setting. It’s done us a favour in hindsight as we have overhauled our van safety off the back of this videos helpful comments which to be honest was non existent 🤦♀️. Thanks for your comment. Jane ☺️
I'm relieved to hear that everything worked out nicely. I'm not sure if you have them, but if you don't, I would highly recommend that you install some external lights along the side of the van so that you can turn them on at night and they can also serve as a deterrent. I'm also not sure whether you're aware with 3M films for added window protection.
Hi thank you for watching and above all comments - we were a little naive but this was a minor blob in a great 9 week trip and only incident in 5 years. With all the comments we looked at all the suggestions and actually created a security video of what we changed which was behaviour and physical do you may see that on our channel . One of them was external lights and that has made a big difference
*Newly Updated Safety Suggestions: for Campers, Hikers, Explorers, and Travelers* I just happened to see your channel, and others similar channels recently, and I think that you, and others sharing their actual reality, and some have expressed some of the up, and down sides to van, RV, or vehicle living. Although, I just noticed your UA-cam channel, and other similar channels, displaying van living. I just wanted to remind everyone to Aware Be of your surroundings and Alert, I just posted this anyway to help anyone who may benefit from these suggestions I believe that it is very helpful, and beneficial to others who may be thinking about this type of living without actually thinking through, about the some of the realistic problems that could occur with vehicle or van living etc... People need to know what up sides there are, as well as some of the down sides of vehicle living. I believe this channel, and other channels have been informative to others, including myself. Although, I am NOT living in a vehicle or anything like this. I feel that you , and others UA-camrs sharing this with your viewers will be very helpful. I wish you ALL the Best with your traveling endeavors. I shared this with several other travelers, as I watched their UA-cam channel for the first time, as yours, and I shared with them this information that may be helpful to you as well to others. Therefore, I would also like to suggest a few Safety tips, and items that may help you, or others in your viewing audience. Although, you may have knowledge of this already, I am not sure, so I hope this will be helpful to you, others or someone. *Keep a Extra working cellphone with you or in your vehicle. You can purchase inexpensive phone with a very low monthly price between 25, 35, 45, dollars a month with unlimited data and text, and some have Nationwide coverage Do your research for the best fit for you Consider Carrying Several Extra portable cellphone phone chargers, and cables. Consider theses items: *Mini portable power charging station. I have also seen outdoor portable solar powered power stations, that can be recharged from sunlight this may be very useful to have, to power your devices. *Invest in a Cellular signal booster for outdoor use, and camping situations to boost or amplify your cell signal and reception. Consider also the purchase of a WiFi signal booster to also boost your WiFi signal. Research to see what you prefer. *Very Inportant: Invest in a SOS distress electronic signal device, this a kind of device can send out a distress signal with your exact location. There are various types of these devices, and including devices that can be used when boating, or camping situations. *Some have emergency Strobe lights SOS signaling with location alerts, and location updates that can be sent to your family, and emergency first responders. Some can be synchronized with your smart watch or phone. There are some satellite SOS texting messaging, locator devices that will send messages with your phone even if there isn’t any cellular signal, or WiFi. With this device your can still text, and communicate with others in a emergency satellite transmission. Check online, for various emergency SOS products, some are small to fit in the palm of your hand. You can check online, and on Amazon, research what SOS devices will be a good fit for you. *Mini portable vehicle battery jumper charger *vehicle battery jumper cables *Vehicle Jumper cables *PLEASE BE AWARE* that in the *WINTER* *vehicle *Batteries fail* many times in very cold weather conditions. Vehicle batteries drain more often in the winter months. Please Keep a vehicle battery portable jumper pack, this is a device that can jumper or boost your vehicles battery yourself without another vehicle. If you have a older battery in your vehicle, Please have it tested or replace it, and consider the purchase a new vehicle battery with higher Cold Cranking Amps rating. Be Aware that Sometimes even a battery that is a few years old can fail in the Winter months, and extremely cold temperatures. Some alternatives to Winter Camping, Travelers, Explorers, etc, if you can find a Warmer Climate Location to stay during Extreme Winter months, or stay with family for a few weeks. Another alternative is renting somewhere although this can probably get expensive. What ever you decide Be Careful, Alert, Aware, Safe, and Informed... *Keep a Fire extinguisher handy *Smoke detectors, and Carbon monoxide detectors can be helpful Consider installing; *Mounted Dashboard camera front and rear possibly. *Exterior vehicle mounted camera for the front, rear, and both sides of your vehicle. Some can be activated by motion, Including spotlights. *Interior vehicle cameras *Flashlights or pluggin spotlights *Portable spotlights, and lanterns Keep a few whistles around with you, and in your vehicle possibly in your vehicle’s center console *Keep a Sound horn, for hiking this can service, as a deterrent, and a emergency signal alert for others. *A set of long range 2 way radios, walkie talkies, to communicate with others during trips, some have 100 mile radius keep for emergencies, you can keep with you when hiking. Use your own discretion regarding the use carrying of any weapons. Don’t forget to bring Bear Spray Pepper spray Where is allowed Purchase a couple canisters just in case and keep it with you If you own a drone you can use it to survey your area for animals etc. However, Please Be Safe and Beware of your Surroundings. Stay Alert, and Be Safe even when stopping at Rest stops, Truck Stops, and conducting your various tasks. Keep in often contact with your family, friends etc. Keep up with the latest Weather Updates, beware and prepare for unexpected Weather events and conditions. *VERY IMPORTANT* *WINTER AWARENESS* I would suggest *NOT* to travel to locations without internet, or cellular service in the Winter, the reason is that weather conditions can change very quickly, and you absolutely DO NOT want have a vehicle break down, or malfunction, or emergency, and not have the availability to communicate, and contact your family, and or, emergency road assistance, or emergency services. Please Keep in mind that even in area where there is cellular service and internet, in the Winter sometimes there are ice storms that may occur and this can cause Power or Electrical failures, until utilities crews repair lines. *Your Safety is Important* *PLEASE BE AWARE* that in some extreme cold temperatures that vehicle fuel lines could Freeze and causing a vehicle to not start. Just in case Keep your gas tank filled, which helps prevent vehicle fuel lines from freezing. Keep gas or fuel line additive, or gas line antifreeze, that is rated to use okay for your vehicle. Check with your a certified mechanic and your vehicle owners manual, and or dealer repair facility to inquire what is best to prevent freezing gas tank and lines in extreme cold. In the Winter even your bottled Water can freeze so Be Careful and Plan ahead. *Safety is Paramount* *Your Life is Important* *You want to Live to Travel another Day* *So Be Safe* *Stay Alert* *Keep your vehicle gas filled* Don’t ride on fumes, or on Empty. Don’t chance your Safety by running your vehicle fuel or gas too close to Empty. Fill it up anyway, it will save you alot of time, and headache later on. Remember to keep up on routine maintenance, check your tires for wear, keep up with your fluids for your vehicle, like oil levels, antifreeze coolant, Please carry extra (oil)(washer fluid), (brake fluid), (antifreeze). You will need extra Winshield Washer fluid because of the ever changing Weather conditions, dustly roads, especially in slushy wet roads. *WINTER AWARENESS* In the winter consider purchasing and deicing Windshield Washer Fluid, for the much colder weather conditions. Furthermore, you will need extra Windshield Washer Fluid, Because you will Be driving more often in dusty, dirty, windy, and varying weather conditions. Your windshield will gather dust and debris from long term driving. Also, Remember Because you are on the road riding for sometimes very long distances, and long periods of time, I would suggest investing in 2 sets of tires, and a spare, the extra set at a home base, friends or family’s house to rotate later on, also make sure that you have a spare tire in your vehicle. Check the mileage ratings on your tires they all very. Conduct visual inspections of your tires often, check for damage, wearing, air pressure, etc Keep a pressure gauge to check your tires pressure and a tire pump. Electric, Portable tire pump. Keep towing insurance to Be Safe if you ever need it. It Doesn’t cost much try to get National coverage if available, or where you will be traveling. Keep Extra financing, and savings for any unexpected issues, vehicle repairs, and overnight stays, in a emergency or if you need to rest indoors. Keep Enjoying Yourself, Keep Enjoying the outdoors, and Nature Just..Please continue to Be Positive, Safe, and Alert.. Wishing Success, Well-being and Happiness You All. Wow great post and brilliant you share the list with us as others will benefit. We don’t live full time but have extended periods out do the Ireland trip was 9 weeks but your suggestions are still valid We simply share what happens to us the good and the bad and the reality do whilst this was ultimately just an egg you still go through the same emotion of a group of individuals invading your space and throwing something at the van which we thought initially it was a rock Many thanks for watching and above all commenting
Hi, I just found your channel and subscribed. Thankfully it wasn't serious. These were not "kids" but adults who have no regard for the consequences of their actions. You did the right thing to report them. Get yourselves a very powerful torch that you can shine right at anybody coming too close. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the rest of your holiday. All the best. XX
That would have scared the heck out of me! Living in a van myself, may I suggest: never park with front end pulled in. Always park with your nose out. Also, never turn your inside lights on in that situation. If in danger, darkness is your friend. The best strategy to get them to move on (aside from the sound of chambering a round, lol) is to stay dark inside and beam them with a very strong flashlight. You effectively blind them while being able to see them. Best of luck and safe travels, Lauren 😊 P.S. always keep your keys and a flashlight in the same spot next to you when you sleep.
Yes thanks at the time it was scary as you don’t know what’s going on We were a little naive and based on a lot of comments we changed a few things and created a security video of the changes - thanks for sharing your thoughts
So sorry this had to happen to you both in my country. I have been wild camping in my renault trafic for years I'm in my late 60s and thankfully have not experienced any problems. Please don't let this change your mind about travelling in Ireland. Love your van by the way stay safe. Paddy the Irish man.
Thanks for watching and commenting this was a blip and could happen anywhere. You will see in our other videos we had a fantastic trip and was made to be most welcome and highly recommend Ireland
Thank you for sharing. Our oldest daughter is car camping from Tennessee to the west (USA) this summer after school lets out for summer. She’s a teacher and has built out her car for this adventure. She solo camps alot but I ask for well wishes and prayers as she heads out at the end of May. Many blessings to you. Thank you for sharing. ❤
Reality is it’s a rare event we have only had one incident in 5 and half years and we’re a little naive All the great comments we ended up making sone changes and summarised these in a video - the link is at the end of this video Thanks for watching
Hi Pamela - Absolutely 100% ! And thankfully just an egg too. We know theres been alot worse thrown. And thats why we processed it quickly. But being far from anywhere alone and in the dark to be woken up to a car - voices - the van moving and a thud scared the hell out of us until we had time to realise what happened. And infact Stew was more annoyed afterwards at the idiots because as he said it could of been our YT friend Sue from CamperVanya there on her own. Thanks for watching and commenting. Jane ☺️
I appreciate your comments and that is the alternative but we were there for 9 weeks and could not afford a 20 euro per night fee it would make it impossible for us - do you are correct we have to accept the risk and minimise it Thankyou for watching
I have learned not to stay in one place too long. It seems there is always someone not so nice keeping track of your movements.,Its just the world today. Always weirdos troublemakers watching. A real shame.
Hi There, Ireland is really a beautiful place from what I have seen on your video. Maybe one thing to consider when parking up for the night, always park in such a way that you have more than 1 way to drive out without getting out of your van....enjoy your journey and safe travels
Hi there 👋 Ireland is just one big wow isnt it. We cant wait to get back there. My only complaint about the place is that it was so stunning we didnt travel far daily 😂 but its a nice complaint to have. Thanks for watching and commenting. Jane
so sorry to hear about your episode with idiots , its the one thing that worries me doing van life on my own , take care and merry christmas to you both xx
Wee we ok it’s an infrequent occurrence and 4 years and this was the first incident and ultimately minor - I think if you approach something could happen then when it does it won’t be so big
Thanks for watching Peter. Its taken us many years to feel more at ease with camping in remote places. So while not serious it certainly threw us a bit 🤦♀️ but we know that this is not the norm. Happy travels ☺️ jane
What a horrible experience for you. I'm glad you're OK. Sadly, this is the third time I've learnt about vans being attacked. You know of course about Wizard in the Wild, but another UA-camr, Touring with the Kids, reported that they had been targeted whilst staying near the Falkirk wheel in Scotland. Banging on the rear doors of their van.
Yes we know Wizard and theirs was so much worse although in that split second the emotion is the same …. Unfortunately there seems a lack of respect but it’s also rare which is why we have moved on as we have travelled now for 4 years - thanks for watching
Yes, I have heard it a few times too, often in the UK. I don't have a van but I live in the countryside and we get a lot of drunk driving, drug driving and vandalism at night. Even cars by the train station have been vandalised at night too or stolen. The police have stopped some of them and got them with drugs, guns and offensive weapons. If you go on the police crime map for the area, you get a rough idea of what sort of behaviour is in the roads where you will pitch up. Even talk to locals, sometimes an area may be quiet. for a reason
Hi a newbie to your channel from Scotland…. Can I make a suggestion We always make sure our van is pointing to the exit just makes things easier for a faster getaway even in car parks we always reverse in .. Safe travels .
Thanks for watching and commenting - we were a little naive and did a follow up as based on all the great comments and sone of them behaviours as you say …. It could of been worse but at that time when the van shakes and something hits the van you just don’t know
Hi Patricia. We’ve had so many good comments like yours. Especially about the direction park we in. Just seems like common sense now but something we’ve never thought about 🤦♀️ definitely something we will take forward and also lights. Thanks for watching ☺️ jane
@@getawaygeese And remember to NOT park all the way back against a structure such as a wall, fence, cliff, etc. ... if an assailant should be parked in front of you then you will need at least a few feet to reverse before driving around that vehicle and away to safety.
As a third degree black belt instructor I would never advise you exit the vehicle, it could sometimes be a ploy to lure you from safety in order to assault you or steal your vehicle or both. Glad your safe though, just subbed.
Thanks for watching commenting and subbing - as said although I joked about it I only got out when I heard them drive off I agree that’s a risk getting out of the van for sure
At night people seem to be very different and there are few police about. I would love to be a fly on the wall at night in my area, but I am always asleep. My area at night would be completely different and less rosy. Just talking about what happens at night is important, during the day we can be very naive. It is kind of crazy. I am a volunteer in crime prevention but we only do daytime as a volunteer.. at the moment. I wouldn't want to be alone at night
Always, always have a crazy bright torch within grabbing distance, mine is screwed onto the cupboard above the work surface charging up. Highly recommended. Anything above sorta 3000 lumens is fine.
Hi there. Thanks for watching and commenting ☺️ yes weve picked up so much good advice like yours from all the comments and taken onboard for our next trip. The word naive comes to mind. We will be better prepared next time hopefully. Jane ☺️
Sorry to hear what you guys had to go through..it sounds like youth's messing around.they probably thought it was hilarious..it must of been awful in the moment..best to leave just in case..it's sad when arseholes ruin people's nice time..
That’s the problem for us it’s very scary egg rock or bang on door whilst they laugh the impact to others is greater - I suspect if there granny had the same event they would feel different - thanks for watching
@@getawaygeese Some people are narcissistic and as you say get their kicks to intimidate you. They really are cowards and often work in groups, they would be mild little mice when alone. Peer pressure can make people do stupid things 'for kicks'.
A safety tip is to always have your vehicle turned towards the exit way. Especially if on a dead end. Also a mega bright torch you can turn on will highlight what is happening.
Glad you were O.K.
Thanks for watching - yes sound advice all I had at hand was a whisk in the cutlery draw
Brain dead
We tend to pick the way we're facing mostly with the goal of having a private spot to ourselves when we open the door. Never really expect to experience this sort of thing....if you'd got their license plate I'd have been tempted to both report them to the cops and sue them for damage, distress, probably also assault as it seems reasonable you'd have apprehended an imminent battery when they're hitting the van (contrary to popular misconception you can assault someone without touching them)....of course safer not to see or confront them but if I'd managed to get a license plate I'd be taking action on point of principle.
Every car, always!
Egg can leave damage on your paint work . Get some strong flood lights for your van
Yes lights will be something we sort
@@getawaygeese You cannot wild camp anywhere in Ireland without permission!
Perhaps that's why you were targeted. 😏
Could be I guess
"It was a large egg... it was not a medium egg... it was a large egg!" Best sentence in the video 🙂 Stay safe!
Well you have to try to make light of the event to move in lol 😂 at the time we didn’t laugh mind you
Thanks for watching and commenting
Don't get into a dead end situation, even if the van is turned around a vehicle can block the exit
@steven - yes we are investigating several options thanks for watching
@Diane - yes another consideration for sure although many beach cove stops are that so it’s a risk calc I guess or move elsewhere for the night
This is outrageous. Really sorry this happened to you nice people.
We loved the 9 weeks in Ireland and so many more videos to come this was one blip in a superb visit
This is about respect all ways and we had great interactions with folk so highly recommended touring
Good to hear it was only minor. Great to hear you carried on.
@patrick - thanks it was important to rationalise it and move on but learn to - thanks for watching
Get a shotgun or a protective dog as a pet ! And then you won't need to grow balls. Regards Tony from Australia.
😂. Not sure that look will suit me Tony !! Jane ☺️
You are a lovely couple. Love from Ireland 🇮🇪☘🇮🇪
Thanks Ray. Just unfortunate to meet some idiots 🤦♀️ Thanks for watching. Jane ☺️
I agree that’s some thing that kids do when they can’t find anything else to do
I am a big guy but I would never sleep being so vulnerable and exposed in the middle of nowhere .
Jane
Agree respect goes always
Agree just travelling in another country and there is a better balanced and acknowledgment that sone ( not all for sure ) contribute to local economies and respect
Whilst we are not full time we definitely contribute to the local economy willingly
Really appreciate your comments as it’s important but as ever there are some that abuse no matter where you are in society
(j/k) lol I know you probably can't do that. . . .
Can’t carry weapons or things like spray etc over here - I think Stew replied to your other comment as we have had lights fitted as well as a few other things to do we feel a bit safer
Thanks for commenting
We live and we learn, there is some great advise in the comments.
Thankfully my Dad taught me as a kid, that even when I camp with my kids & family, that after setup, I made sure, our car is facing towards a way to get out as easily as possible. I took my Dads advise for granted & never really thought of it. But as you’ve shown us, it can be worthwhile.
Safe travels from Australia & Thank You for sharing your travels with us.

Hi. Yes we’ve definitely realised this now. The advice we had from the comments to this video has been invaluable to our van safety going forward. Thanks for watching and commenting. Jane

Always park your van in a position that doesn't require a 16-point turn if you want/need to move off in a hurry ! Good luck.
Yes one thing for future trips as we did carry on not thinking about that although some locations lend itself to park a certain way
As someone said in another video, they could disguise their van and put a logo 'Pest Control' on it, maybe more creative and 'Caution Zoo Lions' in back.

Yes in the 9 week trip only issue we had and in fact our overall experience of Ireland is really positive

@@ottouring- do you ever find big spiders in your camper?
I suggest that when you park your van, you always park it headed in the direction out. That will save you from difficult turn around in the dark. Also, if an attack occurs, you might be able to pull out and escape in your van.
Yes that is one thing in all the comments we need to take on board - thank you for commenting and watching
IF it is a genuine "attack" that's no holds barred time and you should use the big steel box as a weapon and RAM your way out!
Thanks Dan yep you never know how something will end when it starts. The start was scary for us both as initially we heard voices and then an object hitting the van at that point it felt like an attack. We simply didn’t know what to do ..
Now it could be worse as the egg could of been a stone and we could of personally got attacked but thankfully we didn’t - either mischievous or wanting us away from there was the mission I think

My teenage friends used to go to the shop to buy a 24 pack of eggs to throw at busses and cyclists.
@dar540 mmmm fun v very scary on the other side

Blimey I bet he was bricking it
I guess not all can be bold like you but understand your approach

@Kado, was that their mission? If it was teenagers they were just as likely to be testing their limits to see what reaction they could provoke & without any real understanding of the range of reactions they might have met.

Thanks for watching - we were determined for it not to change us but also wanted to share to others as it’s important to move on - merry Xmas
G’day from Australia.🇦🇺
So sorry this happened to them.
I just read your comment and thought you might like to look at my set up, Australian locations including world heritage listed Fraser Island, and camp cook ups
Cheers and travel safe🇦🇺

Sorry to hear about your incident - great it didn’t cause any major damage like a stone or rock would have done - still not acceptable behaviour though - hope you can both put it behind you and continue to enjoy your Vanlife - all the very best, have a great Christmas - David & Rachel 👍
Thank you at the time we didn’t know what it was but a little scary but as you say it could of been worse - merry Xmas
Watching from Chicago IL and I am glad the both of you are ok and please be careful and safe
Thank you for watching and commenting - it unsettled us for 48 hours when we were looking for parkups but we were determined to put it behind us
Hi Stew and Jane. Thank you for another positive video, in spite of your experience with those yobs.🙄 You articulated the range of emotions you went through so well! I could relate to every thing you said and I would have been left very shaken! I’m glad that it hasn’t put you off.
Looking forward to the next episode! I wish you and your family a happy and peaceful Christmas.🎄 Tom
Thanks we found our approach right for us as whilst it was only an egg in the end it could of been worse and we didn’t know at the time ….. we will use our approach if we have other issues and hopefully useful for others
Glad you're both OK. Just sad how things have gone...30 years ago when we used to go camping, we always felt safe and people were respectful.
Thanks for watching and your comment - it was a blip on a fantastic 9 week trip and first time in 4 years we have had an issue.
Hopefully it won’t happen again
G’day from Australia.🇦🇺

I’m glad to see you are safe & nothing happened beside jilted nerves 🙏🏽
We have been told not to go out in case they left someone there to lure you out
Thanks for watching and we have now made changes to improve but we still wild camp as that’s what we like
I had the same thing happen to me in Scotland. It was terrifying. I was on my own with a 17month old baby too and there was 3 huge bangs that shook the car! That was parked at the castle by Wick. Shook my confidence to this day :(
Sorry about that - I think that is the key thing is the fact no matter what it is it’s the fact someone thinks it’s ok to do it - must of been scary on your own with a small child
Thanks for watching and commenting
sad to think this is happening ireland is such a wonderful place and the people so nice

Ok that’s my best response going forward lol thanks for watching
@@getawaygeese 🥰💯....I send you good luck and peaceful traveling in the future 😇😇😇
Haha brilliant
I'm glad to know that you all are okay.
Glad you like the series were coming back next year to do the north so don’t miss it - we love the place
Sorry ,glad you took of better be to safe than sorry. God Bless You. Take care and have fun.
Thanks for watching
Hey guys... looks like you handled the egg throwing situation really well. It must have been really scary at the time - I did resist the temptation to make a joke (or yoke!) about Stew's omelette making skills when I realised how serious it must have been at the time! 🙂Have a great Christmas and New Year and safe travels in 2023! All the best!
Lol to be honest whether it’s an egg or a bang on the door the feeling at the time is the same you wonder what the grill is going on especially when you are remote - but we moved on as it’s a rarity
Merry Xmas

Sorry to hear about this. We from Dundalk and have a wee VW Ocean. Had a similar experience in Newcastle, Co Down. Didn't feel threatened by the yobs, nonetheless not a nice experience. Stay safe and put it behind you.
No we rationalised it and actually talking to camera the following day allowed us to move in to - thanks for watching
That’s not great and sorry you had to go through it with kids
The problem is when something happens you don’t know which way it might g
We were a little naive but all the great comments we made changes and created a security video
I'm glad you were okay. Maybe don't camp in such an isolated area with only one road out. Happy, safe travels together. 🍀
Thanks we learned a few lessons but it was one isolated incident in the 9 week trip and Ireland was fantastic
@getawaygeese
I'm binging on it now in Florida! Just finished Cobh, one of my favorite places. Celebrated my 36th Birthday there in 1990. Loved hearing the bells from the Beautiful cathedral.
@marymahar8446 Cobh is a great place
Scary! We watched this while ‘wild camping’ at the Canterbury Park and Ride for the night 😀 We’ll never be as brave as you… Glad it was just an egg though. Happy travelling in 2023.
Ah sorry if we scared you lol it’s a rare event in reality and could of been worse
Yep it was a blip in a great 9 week trip and we fell in love with Ireland - so much so we are just sharing our winter trip to the north on the channel
Thanks for watching …… this us the first time in 4 years we have had an issue and felt we should share as it was part of our trip but we moved on
Logic says that was the local lads meeting place where they were safe to smoke weed as there's one road in. They are discouraging vans from staying. It worked and to be fair they were not too nasty This should be a park for night red flag though
Yep you may be right having stayed there one night we felt safe to be honest so maybe it was bad luck - thanks for watching
Exactly, could be a drug meeting place and they were in the way
No idea why this popped up on my homepage a year later, but glad it did. The fact they had eggs mean they were kids out for a bit of mischief and no more. Probably not the first van they targeted that night unfortunately. Hope you weren't too put out by it.
The wonders of UA-cam hopefully you will stay with us as this was very much an exception video - this was the first series in Ireland and we are now sharing a second winter trip in the channel and before that a trip to France
We were a little naive but based on all the comments we changed a few things
Thanks for watching
So sorry you guys experienced this but might I suggest something my dad did when we would go camping is always point your vehicle towards an exit for your safety, carry something more than a knife or baseball bat and at the time you heard them driving away call the police because you never know if they might've set up a trap knowing you might leave. Be safe, loved your video ❤️
Yes that one thing we didn’t think about being lured by them … we are already changing our habit in parking since we have returned from what was a superb visit to Ireland
Thanks for watching
Thanks we are looking into lights for sure
Sounds good
So glad you are ok guys. It was most likely some kids making mischief. Highly rude of them, but what goes around comes around....take care...
Thanks for watching and it was an isolated incident in Ireland for us and found everyone really welcoming although we were in rural areas
UK is definitely different in places that’s for sure
Thanks for watching
Hi I agree 100% with what you've said and I've seen this bullying predatory incidents increasing , reporting incidents to the police is vital , who will follow it up and take these incidents seriously ,they definitely seem predatory in nature and hence that's what they are attacking lone vehicles ,its sickening and part of why the UK is getting a bad reputation , often seeing comments from Europeans saying they won't be visiting ,this has to be taken into account also ,
In this case it was an egg but doesn't excuse it in any way but they were most likely testing the water ,the fact they purposely approached the campervan is stalking behaviour In itself .
You are the cutest couple!
As thanks - trust me have our moments - thanks for watching
I'm happy 😊 you 2 are OK. Please take care of yourselves.
Aw thanks Karen - we are fine it was a blip in a fantastic 9 week trip - we show people what showings good and bad - it could of been so much worse but we moved on in our heads and physically- it’s not the eggs it’s the fact that someone at that moment thought it ok to scare us
Just come across your channel and it makes me so angry that someone could terrorise people by attacking your van like that just for kicks 😡
Well done for not letting them deter you.
Thanks after wecestionalised it and came to the same conclusion - obviously at the time we didn’t know and it’s a shame they don’t realise the impact
It was one small blip in a fantastic trip of 9 weeks and if you watch our other videos you will see we highly recommend visiting the country
Just wanted to say Thank You. Being from Central Texas, USA you gave me an opportunity to see beautiful country that otherwise I will probably never see in person. Blessings to you both and safe travels.
Brilliant so glad you liked the series - it was a 9 week trip and probably made to many episodes lol but we loved it so much - thanks for watching
We had 9 weeks in Ireland so this was an isolated incident but we film what happens good and bad
Ireland is fantastic and so friendly and we plan to come back as only saw a small part of the coastline
It was 'just an egg' but it must have been scary. Glad you're okay. Merry Christmas! Michelle.
They use eggs to throw at the front windscreen because it forms a film when u try to wipe off with windscreen wipers and you can’t see to drive off.
@@getawaygeese A whisk can ne a very dangerous weapon, you might just be stirring things up.
If you see my other episodes I fail to make an omelette so that’s a shame as a missed opportunity as I could of fed them
Lol yes
Nearly makes me want to go there and catch them in the act ,
We were all young once and sometimes don’t see the error of our ways .
*Newly Updated Safety Suggestions: for Campers, Hikers, Explorers, and Travelers*
I just happened to see your channel, and others similar channels recently, and I think that you, and others sharing their actual reality, and some have expressed some of the up, and down sides to van, RV, or vehicle living.
Although, I just noticed your UA-cam channel, and other similar channels, displaying van living.
I just wanted to remind everyone to Aware Be of your surroundings and Alert, I just posted this anyway to help anyone who may benefit from these suggestions
I believe that it is very helpful, and beneficial to others who may be thinking about this type of living without actually thinking through, about the some of the realistic problems that could occur with vehicle or van living etc...
Although, you may have knowledge of this already,
I am not sure, so I hope this will be helpful to you, others or someone.
*Keep a Extra working cellphone with you or in your vehicle.
You can purchase inexpensive phone with a very low monthly price between 25, 35, 45, dollars a month with unlimited data and text, and some have Nationwide coverage
Do your research for the best fit for you
Consider Carrying Several Extra portable cellphone phone chargers, and cables.
Consider theses items:
*Mini portable power charging station.
*Very Inportant:
Invest in a SOS distress electronic signal device, this a kind of device can send out a distress signal with your exact location.
*Mini portable vehicle battery jumper charger
*vehicle battery jumper cables
*Vehicle Jumper cables
*PLEASE BE AWARE* that in the *WINTER*
*vehicle *Batteries fail* many times in very cold weather conditions.
*Keep a Fire extinguisher handy
*Smoke detectors, and Carbon monoxide detectors can be helpful
Consider installing;
*Mounted Dashboard camera front and rear possibly.
*Exterior vehicle mounted camera for the front, rear, and both sides of your vehicle.
Some can be activated by motion, Including spotlights.
*Interior vehicle cameras
*Flashlights or pluggin spotlights
*Portable spotlights, and lanterns
Keep a few whistles around with you, and in your vehicle possibly in your vehicle’s center console
*Keep a Sound horn, for hiking this can service, as a deterrent, and a emergency signal alert for others.
*A set of long range 2 way radios, walkie talkies, to communicate with others during trips, some have 100 mile radius keep for emergencies, you can keep with you when hiking.
Use your own discretion regarding the use carrying of any weapons.
Don’t forget to bring
Bear Spray
Pepper spray
Where is allowed
Purchase a couple canisters just in case and keep it with you
If you own a drone you can use it to survey your area for animals etc.
*VERY IMPORTANT*
*WINTER AWARENESS*
I would suggest *NOT* to travel to locations without internet, or cellular service in the Winter, the reason is that weather conditions can change very quickly, and you absolutely DO NOT want have a vehicle break down, or malfunction, or emergency, and not have the availability to communicate, and contact your family, and or, emergency road assistance, or emergency services.
Please Keep in mind that even in area where there is cellular service and internet, in the Winter sometimes there are ice storms that may occur and this can cause Power or Electrical failures, until utilities crews repair lines.
*Your Safety is Important*
*PLEASE BE AWARE* that in some extreme cold temperatures that vehicle fuel lines could Freeze and causing a vehicle to not start.
*Safety is Paramount*
*Your Life is Important*
*You want to Live to Travel another Day*
*So Be Safe*
*Stay Alert*
*Keep your vehicle gas filled*
Don’t ride on fumes, or on Empty.
Don’t chance your Safety by running your vehicle fuel or gas too close to Empty.
Fill it up anyway, it will save you alot of time, and headache later on.
Remember to keep up on routine maintenance, check your tires for wear, keep up with your fluids for your vehicle, like oil levels, antifreeze coolant,
Please carry extra (oil)(washer fluid), (brake fluid), (antifreeze).
You will need extra Winshield Washer fluid because of the ever changing Weather conditions, dustly roads, especially in slushy wet roads.
*WINTER AWARENESS*
In the winter consider purchasing and deicing Windshield Washer Fluid, for the much colder weather conditions.
Conduct visual inspections of your tires often, check for damage, wearing, air pressure, etc
Keep a pressure gauge to check your tires pressure and a tire pump.
Keep Enjoying Yourself,
Keep Enjoying the outdoors, and Nature
Just..Please continue to
Be Positive, Safe, and Alert..
Wishing Success, Well-being and Happiness You All.
God Bless You, and everyone
Traveling, or living in their vehicles, Vans, RVs, Hiking etc.
Please Be Safe.....
God Be With You.....

Wow great post and brilliant you share the list with us as others will benefit. We don’t live full time but have extended periods out do the Ireland trip was 9 weeks but your suggestions are still valid
We simply share what happens to us the good and the bad and the reality do whilst this was ultimately just an egg you still go through the same emotion of a group of individuals invading your space and throwing something at the van which we thought initially it was a rock
Many thanks for watching and above all commenting
Hi, I just found your channel and subscribed. Thankfully it wasn't serious. These were not "kids" but adults who have no regard for the consequences of their actions. You did the right thing to report them. Get yourselves a very powerful torch that you can shine right at anybody coming too close. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the rest of your holiday. All the best. XX
We did as the series is running behind where we are at as we were on the road in Ireland for 9 weeks and had the best time
Thanks for watching
That would have scared the heck out of me! Living in a van myself, may I suggest: never park with front end pulled in. Always park with your nose out. Also, never turn your inside lights on in that situation. If in danger, darkness is your friend. The best strategy to get them to move on (aside from the sound of chambering a round, lol) is to stay dark inside and beam them with a very strong flashlight. You effectively blind them while being able to see them. Best of luck and safe travels, Lauren 😊 P.S. always keep your keys and a flashlight in the same spot next to you when you sleep.
Yes thanks at the time it was scary as you don’t know what’s going on
We were a little naive and based on a lot of comments we changed a few things and created a security video of the changes - thanks for sharing your thoughts
@@getawaygeese I'm so glad to hear that! I have some videos to catch up on :-) Lauren
Reality is it’s a rare event we have only had one incident in 5 and half years and we’re a little naive
All the great comments we ended up making sone changes and summarised these in a video - the link is at the end of this video
Thanks for watching
This happened to another van at the same location and they moved obviously too.
Thanknyou for watching - we did hear later by a local it was a ‘thing’ that happened - Shame the Garda hasn’t sort them out
Lucky there were TWO of you
There are so many solo female travellers out there dealing with a lot more!!
Jane ☺️
As a van lifer myself this is why I always park on authorised campsites only. It isn’t worth the risk. So much more of this happening these days.
I appreciate your comments and that is the alternative but we were there for 9 weeks and could not afford a 20 euro per night fee it would make it impossible for us - do you are correct we have to accept the risk and minimise it
Thankyou for watching
sorry, giving in to bullies makes situations worse not better.
I have learned not to stay in one place too long. It seems there is always someone not so nice keeping track of your movements.,Its just the world today. Always weirdos troublemakers watching. A real shame.
Yep at the moment we won’t be forced by bad behaviour to change as we are very respectful of where we stop and often do litter picks etc
Yes if we had left after one night that would of reduced the risk I guess - thanks for watching

Thank you. That’s really good advice. Jane ☺️
It could of been worse but at that time when the van shakes and something hits the van you just don’t know
You should always be backed in wherever you park, especially for unexpected events or personal attacks, easier to get up and leave!
Another great tweak to that tip we are seeing a lot of - thanks
As a third degree black belt instructor I would never advise you exit the vehicle, it could sometimes be a ploy to lure you from safety in order to assault you or steal your vehicle or both.
Glad your safe though, just subbed.
Thanks for watching commenting and subbing - as said although I joked about it I only got out when I heard them drive off I agree that’s a risk getting out of the van for sure
@@getawaygeese stay safe out there.
Merry Christmas.
Thanks same to you
good point
