It seems to me there is an awful lot of people in the UK that like to mess with campers. Though it happens in the US, it's far less. Most campers over here are packing heat, and screwing with someone in the middle of the night is a good way to meet your maker!
I was just about to write a detailed response about how I've done hundreds of solo back country camping trips from the west coast of Canada to the east coast and nothing creepy has ever happened to me. But then I remembered the few encounters that would be right at home in a video like this. Hasn't ever stopped me from doing what I love but I'd be lying if I said I didn't lay awake in my tent sometimes thinking about those unexplained, ominous encounters.

But yeah its sad people watching a few videos of bad encounters while 99.9% of the time you would be safe (probably dependent on what country you are in ofc)
It used to be customary to announce your presence to a camp before coming in, skulking around the perimeter of a camp was was a big no-go and considered threatening. Definitely right to pack up if intuition is on high alert.
Indeed, very bad manners not to announce yourself but I guess very few people have experienced the dome of light of a campfire, how hard it is to see past it and how vulnerable it makes you feel.
Creeping up on a person's campsite is a particularly dangerous proposition. Here in the woods of Missouri it could certainly add lead to your diet. Bad for one's health that is.

I feel like that's still human instinct, even in today's age. To approach someone camping in the wilderness and not announce yourself is just really odd behavior.
Always, ALWAYS trust your gut instincts especially when there is potential danger around. Long time ago now but when I was 14 years old back in 1994, camping in the Australian outback with my late Father, uncle and my cousin. Sitting around the fire not long after the sun fully set, my dad and uncle was sharing some stories like normal and then all of a sudden my uncle just stopped talking, looked at my father with concern and sort of made a slight hand gesture to us all to be quiet, he grabbed his rifle from next to him and just shot it into a massive blue gum tree that was only about 30 feet from where we was sitting and two men got up from out of the bushes and just took off running into the distance, my uncle screamed out at them and fired a few shots in the air, never seen the two strangers again. All of us completely scared just packed up and left for the night. Big story my family have always spoken about over the years. It’s a scary thought to think what would of maybe happened or what them 2 strangers intentions were if my uncle never went with his gut instinct thinking something was there and firing a warning shot into a tree and scaring them off.
Is it weird to think that among all the creatures that could be creeping up on you and lurking in the bushes next to your campsites, other humans are among the worst options that I can imagine? Idk why that is. Maybe because animals sneaking around is normal, but other people sneaking up on your camp is weird and creepy.
@@hudimudiwell if you think about it Humans are the biggest threat to Humans so it makes perfect sense. Josh here is in the UK where there are no predators to worry about. Humans can be sick pieces of shit too.
@@hudimudi its easy to tell an animal's motivation. Threatened, hungry, or territorial. A human's motivation is not so easily known. I think that's where that heightened sense of danger comes from when it comes to a human. Not to mention all the things a human can do to you that an animal can't.
@@hudimudiNot weird at all. Humans are far more concerning. You kbiw a bear or a wolf or whatever's intention. It either thinks you're on it's territory or it wants your food. But they're not doing it out of malice. They don't mean harm, they're just doing what is natural. Cause, worst case scenario, if a human is stalking you, they mean harm. Humans have a capacity to inflict much more harm on you than an animal cause in that situation, some human, stalking you in the woods, they don't know you, they are some sick person that just wants to hurt people.
When something starts feeling bad in the gut... go. Just go. Fear, while hailed as something to "get over", is also an ancient instinct for survival. Take care out there. The woods are beautiful and healing but can also be dangerous in more ways than one.
I don't call it instincts I call it god especially if you believe in him because there's plenty of the population that express stupidity with no instincts meaning they are totally unaware of danger going on around them. so to me it was god tugging at his heart and warning him to go and in another comment I said that 100% without a shadow of a doubt it was a man barking like a dog you call tell after the first bark the second time it starts up at the beginning you can really tell it's a man fake barking
Yes. For any outdoor experience, where you deal with the elements of nature (weather, topography, intra- or inter-species conflict), this is absolutely the time to listen to your gut.
Totally agree, instinctual feelings were used far more by our ancestors and our modern scientific world has wrongly made light of them. Relearn your ancient skills.
Im from South Africa and we as a family did quite a bit of wild camping. One weekend we went to a place up in the timber forest named Shayalongubi. It was beside a gorgeous lake and had old fishing shacks in between the trees. It was also on the border of Mozambique during a period of civil unrest. We bedded ourselves down, hubby, 3 kids, the dog and I and were soon sound asleep. At about 2am the dog started doing a low, slow growl. First I, then hubby woke up slightly dazed by a bright light in our faces and about 6 automatic guns of various caliber pointed at us. It was a squad of anti terrorist trackers and they'd smelt our fire and come to investigate. A couple of strong coffees later to warm their cotton socks and they bade us good night, stay safe and went on their way. It was only the next morning that my son cheerfully voiced what we had all been thinking. "Thank God it was the good guys who found us"
Similar thing happened to me over 10 years ago when I was backpacking across Newfoundland but maybe worse. I was following an old rail line that had been converted into a hiking trail. That day of hiking I came across an old abandoned community. Not really a town, but a bunch of boarded up little cottages and trailers. It felt eery, but also cool. I explored a couple of the abandoned trailers but realized the sun was starting to wane. As cool as the little community was I did NOT want to sleep there at night so I started quickly walking down the trail. The community kept going though and I quickly realized I would have to sleep in one of the abandoned lots as it was getting dark, I picked one without a building on it, just an old rusty truck with broken windows slowly being swallowed up by a ravine. I setup the tent, had some dinner and got ready to go to sleep. I was on edge, but being many miles from any real town or road, I didn't have much of a choice so I fell asleep. Not sure when it happened but I awoke at some point and could hear clear footsteps walking around my tent. I calmed myself and slowly, and quietly, took out my knife. The footsteps stopped at the entrance to my tent. I got ready, my plan was that if whoever it was tried opening my tent, I would stab first and ask questions later, as no-one with good intentions would have any reason to open my tent door in the middle of the night unannounced. I don't know if he heard me move in the tent or he never planned to come in but after standing for a bit I heard him walk off into the woods. I waited a long time, kind of paralyzed in fear, wondering what to do. I was completely alone with no vehicle in a woods I didn't know far from any town on a map. After waiting for what felt like hours I got out, packed my stuff faster then I've ever packed before and took off down the trail in the pitch black. I just walked and walked until the sun came out. When I hit the next town I got a hotel and stayed there for a few nights. My theory is that not every building was actually abandoned in the little community. Someone likely watched me walk in and was curious about me and my camp. It's creepy to think they likely watched me walking during the day and either followed me to my camp or went out looking for me at night when they thought I'd be asleep.
Had a group of night stalkers walk past my scout camp at 2am. Hearing them whisper what should they do... they had ill intent but there was a lot of us.
To see someone crouching down behind the tree is the ultimate sign of someone with bad intentions. Then to not answer back, and to walk around ? Uh no. A huge Red Flag to leave asap. Glad you did!
I am so pissed off as to why there are nut jobs who actually find it as a hobby to just stalk peoples camps and not say a weird as they blatantly and obviously make the most noise possible.
Once I was camping solo in the middle of woods than I woke up to some animal noise around the tent and started to listen, then it became quiet and I started to hear steps not like chaotic animal footsteps but human steady pace. It was lasting like 45 min and I went to investigate but saw no one and then I realized because I was trying to lay still and didn’t move much my pulse on my neck was touching my sleeping bag and it was almost perfect sound of someone walking. Almost shat myself 😂
Man I was staying in my friends truck during snowfall in the sierras and it sounded like canons where going off all night. Could hear people moving around, crazy.
Solo camping is insane to me, like even having just one other person provides so much more security and safety even if nothing strange or creepy happens. Props to you for doing it and filming, takes a lot of guts to do what you do

@@dan3nadohh ya, ive had some pretty spooky experiences over rhe years, wandering around where i knew i shouldn't. Its an adventure i suppose. Years ago i went out solo and didn't tell anyone, i got camp set up and was getting the fire going and i looked down the trail and i swear to god man there was a large, tall, black silhouette in the middle of the trail about 20 yards from me. I tried to ignore it, not a big foot or something lol and then i heard a whistle. I know i fucking heard it and it did spook me, I calmly packed up and left. 😊
i dont think i woulda even stuck around after finding Casper. To put that in the middle of nowhere is indicating someone living out their twisted fantasy and I aint starring in Your horror flick . im out
100%... I only ever abandoned camp 1 time after the whole evening feeling off. I was so on edge that I didn't even feel comfortable to drink whisky as my body was screaming at me to stay alert. I packed up my stuff a bit after midnight and got out on the double. a few days later I heard from a friend that the police found a couple of druggies living on the edge of that forest after they robbed a couple of hikers.
I tell my sons that. It’s a power we have inherited from our ancestors. They used to walk around thousands of years ago every foot they would go something would try to kill them. Their instincts kept them alive.
Watched this 3 times and the horror atmosphere is still the same, no creepy background music and no jumpscares, everything is natural and truly scary in nature.. convinced me not to go solo camping, solo with friends is always the best.
Killington vermont 2022. My ex girlfriend (who was an absolute bad ass) was walking through the woods as she often does. A man started to come up the trail behind her very quickly. She kept a steady pace and looked back the man was much closer. She was thinking of stopping and letting the man pass. She kept going but when she turned around this time he had picked up a huge club off the ground. She said she felt petrified. She was hiking with our doberman who jumped out of the woods and immediately knew something was off. He backed up next to her and looked at the man like "you want to try something?" The man looked at them and dropped his club and walked away. Lord knows what would have happened if she didn't have Lawson.

you know... I've been wild camping for years now. and I have had a couple of experiences like this myself. There was especially one that I will never forget. the feeling just came over me all of a sudden and out of nowhere, like I was being watched from behind. and every time I looked, I heard and saw nothing. but when I returned to whatever I was doing, it felt like they or "something" was right behind me... I ended up leaving that night too. But I will say this.... watching your video, the woods don't even look right! it seems as if something is off in the atmosphere, and that's through a screen!... brought that feeling straight back. - overall, it's a brilliant video, keep it up! lets hope the next one is a relaxing one for you!

Those woods and field look familiar. I watched a video about a year ago of a guy camping in woods very similar to yours, and he left abruptly for the same exact reasons. No ghost though, but the woods suddenly got eerily quiet and he also heard bipedal footfalls. Always, Always Listen to your gut! God gave each of us the built in warning signal for a Reason!
@@JonnyMack33 the one I saw wasn’t him, but was very similar as well. The guy went out with his dog and the woods had that same feel. The birds stopped singing and he heard some stuff out in the woods and he decided to leave. His dog was freaking out the whole time. The woods he was in was just a little island of woods in an open field similar to this one. I’m wondering if it is the same location now. At the end of the video he gets back to the car and all the birds scatter from the woods behind him and there’s a yell. It could have been staged or it could have been someone in the woods having fun messing with people.. or he could have actually been in danger. It’s better to trust your gut and leave safe. Edit: Just found it. It was Thomas Lock, which is another solo camping channel.
@@birdiexoxooh yeah I watched him too, a few months ago I think. He went back in daylight and saw a few weird manmade structures out of branches or something if I recall. Real creepy area. And of course UA-cam recommended both of these kinds of videos right before I go to bed 😅
Definitely someone in those woods, you can hear them trudging about and that look at 16:50 you just cant fake. Had a similar experience to your story at the end once, quite a few years ago fell on hard times snd was a vagrant, out walking on a woodland road late at night around 1 or 2 am and this feeling of "get the f off the road" overtook me Went about 20 yards into the woods and sure enough, a truck pulled up right where i had been and 2 people got out with flashlights and followed me in. Mustve had a camera set up on the side of the road or something and saw me as i was walking. I hid under fallen leaves and branches, and they searched around for about 30 minutes trying to find me. Never said a word, just heard them walking all around me breaking branches and smashing leaves. Eventually the footsteps went away but i was so terrified just laid there until the sun came up. anytime i think about it i thank god they didn't find me. Theres freaks out there for sure, we both probably encountered similar kinds.
I greatly appreciate seeing these kinds of things from people who actually do this regularly to help me know what to pay attention to. I don't camp, but I like going for walks. I've stopped wearing headphones and it's good to know what I should be aware of in my surroundings.
A bluetooth speaker helps with that. Also arm yourself, if its with a firearm get a pittle training if you or practice at the range, or mace and taser. This world has gotten crazier by the day amd you gotta have some defence, God bless you and stay safe.

My wife booked an off the grid weekend in a cabin for our anniversary in a remote part of the mountains in the Western Cape in South Africa. Lovely place, but very isolated, difficult to reach in our sedan, and zero cell phone signal. There are leopards, baboons, foxes, other small cat species and jackal in the area so we hear some noises that sound like a jackal in the distance. By the time it's dark we had eaten and we left our food in the kitchen of the small cottage and then we went and relaxed in the outside hot tub which was under this massive oak tree about 15 meters from the cottage. We left the door open because, well, it's only us here. It is a moonless night and it is PITCH dark. All you see are these amazing stars and the milky way. At one point we decide to go to bed. We get into the house and my wife looks at the table where she put down her leftover pork chop and she looks at me with this worried look and asks, "where is the pork chop"? At first I laughed, but then I saw these little marks of fat and pork juice leading from the table out of the house and into the blackness outside. We both look at each other in silence. At that moment I hear a loud hiss behind me and it's the frigging automatic fragrance dispenser thing. Anyway, we're on edge and my wife's list of possible culprits in order of likelihood are: 1) A ghost, 2) a monster, 3) a thief. I just thought it was a very sneaky baboon, or a small cat or even perhaps a leopard. We lock the cabin and go to sleep. The next day we wondered whether the chop thief would return and whether we are safe or are we being watched. Turns out, we were. It's the afternoon and the weather has become foul and my wife and I are lying in bed and reading our books. Then I notice a face to my left and a hand touching the glass window and staring into our room, switching it's gaze between us and the plate on which the chop was the night before. It was a mongoose. It's little paw was literally above it's eyes almost like it was trying to stop the glare from outside. When we left the next day our car was completely covered in little mongoose paw prints and we didn't wash it for a good couple of weeks. Everytime we drove to work we saw the mongoose paw on our windshield and we're reminded of the mongoose that stole our chop.
Agree! Listen to your gut. I used to do a lot of rock climbing. We had a saying, " There are old climbers and there are bold climbers. But there are no old, bold climbers." If you were up on a route and your gut said No Further, there was no shame in backing off. Live to climb, or hike, or camp another day. We knew too many great climbers that pushed it just one pitch too far and didn't live to see that next day.
I usually take my 100 lb German Shepard camping with me. She knows what's there way before I do. Last time I went camping in Colorado I ran into a couple of bears when I was getting ready to set up camp. One took a swipe at her but she did her job keeping them distracted long enough to get my mom and son to the car. I called her over and got her in and we went and got a motel room instead of camping out our last night. I LOVE my dog.
Last time we were In the boreal in northern Ontario, a bear showed up so I got out the Heavy bow and i stalked him as he stalked my camp, we decided to just leave because it was out last night anyways and we didn't want any problems with our kids and we didn't want to have to kill the bear because we are in his home and we need to respect their space.
@@aristideregnier4883 I never trained her to do that, it's her instincts. we have a bond. If the bear had got her, I would fight that bear to save her. our fates would have been the same. She knew what she was doing. She has the same faith in me as I do her.
Hey Josh. Had a very similar experience here in North West. Took my two daughters camping to a local woodland spot. Girls in my tent and myself in my hammock. Was laid in the hammock with my headphones in watching a film when I could hear loud footsteps coming through the woods in the leaves loud enough to hear even with headphones in. I jumped out of my hammock and did same as you. Hid being a tree knife in hand. I waited there 20 mins but footsteps had stopped and heard nothing. Litterally as soon as I got back in my hammock and headphone back in they started again. I repeated the same again 3 more times. Sat waiting being tree knife ready. But as normal steps stopped when I got out. I'd scanned the trees with head torch hoping to see the eyes of a fox or something but saw nothing. I laid awake all night as didn't want to wake the kids and scare them from camping again but was worst night camping I've ever had.
@@Trish_Carmichaelto be fair it*could* have been their imagination--especially if it stopped when they got out of their hammock. Most probably an animal who stopped moving when they started, though.
I'm from south Louisiana but one year my dad decided we were going to the ozark mountains for vacation. He wanted to visit caves and beautiful lookouts and actually camp in tents, etc... I had just turned 15 and this was before cell phones, so parents still had a chance to do outdoor things with their kids. One night we were camping near a place called Devils Den in NW Arkansas. We were all worn out and tired by dark. Not sure why but everyone got in the van to sleep, three of them, and left me in the tent. I woke up during the night burning up and got out to sleep on one of the picnic tables. There were two tables but one was covered with several coolers that were removed from the van. Among my family members, I was the only one who could sleep in the open like this. For some reason, mosquitoes and gnats will not bite or sting me. Must be something untasty about me lol. I'd thrown a few pieces of wood on the fire pit coals just to make a little light. Even though it was hot out, this was comforting. The table was hard but I fell asleep quickly. I was facing away from the other table. At some point I was awakened by noise behind me and I was frozen by fright, but I heard bread wrappers rustling and thought it must be my dad getting a midnight snack, as he was prone to do. So I turned over and came face to face with a very large bobcat. He looked at me and I looked at him. Eventually he went back to eating our provisions from the ice chest that he'd turned over. I felt very safe for some reason. Occasionally he would glance at me and then continue pilfering. Next thing I knew it was daylight and the parentals were getting up to make coffee. It looked like a bear had come through and demolished everything and my mother was having a fit over my being so close to the destruction lol. I told her to relax, it was just a big bobcat. She shrieked and asked why I didn't wake them! In typical teenage fashion I told her he was hungry and I didn't feel threatened. Where I was from in the swampland of Louisiana, there were many more threatening things than bobcats. Not a very scary story but its a fond memory.
@Tempusverum I don't know why that made me chuckle 😂. Maybe cause I know that all too well. When I was younger and I would help myself to midnight-3:00am snacks on a regular basis trying to be "quiet".
Josh I like that you act on your gut instincts. Something disturbed you and you did the right thing. For those you tubers who think Josh is a scaredy cat, go try it for yourselves. I was camped out in the woods solo in the New Forest and believe me, many a time I packed my shit up and moved on after hearing strange sounds/voices and heavy footfall in what I believed was a very remote and little used section of the forest
To go off your statement I have spent years out in Wilverly by myself camping, walking and playing, at all times of the day or night. One warm summers evening went out taking photos with a mirror by myself. Went just inside by the dog agility course, set up my gear and snapped a picture. As it was taking (a long exposure) I felt something behind me, and the air for icy cold and my shallow breaths were steaming. I didn’t look then, but when the shutter closed there was a figure in the mirror. Never left anywhere as I quickly as I did then. When I tell the story now the hair stands up on my neck and I feel that fear. It’s strange running from place I know so well, but I don’t regret my decision one bit. Never been back in the night by myself though haha
I used to go camping alone all the time when I was younger. Been woken up by deer blowing at me, among other critters. The noise that an armadillo can make that sounds eerily like a person walking slowly is amazing. What it did it for me was one time at one of my favorite spots, very remote, I got up from my little fire area to walk into the woods to gather more wood. The woods were fairly thick but no undergrowth or low limbs in this area so even though there were a lot of trees, you could see through them pretty good. I made it maybe 30 yards into the woods and turned around to head back with my wood and seeing my campfire and tent through those trees creeped me out more than I could explain. It was very easy to see, but when you’re at the campfire you couldn’t see where I was, nothing beyond the ring of fire light. Just weirded me out that someone or some thing could easily watch me from very close and I wouldn’t know it. I finished the night without incident but I didn’t solo camp after that. Then later reading missing 411 just made it more creepy. Aside from paranormal or running into other people (which may be worse), just the myriad of simple things that could go wrong and leave you basically stranded for dead has made me take a buddy with me when I go camping now.
My wife and I went out day camping down an old trail way out in the woods. We set down a 2 liter by a tree by were we are sitting. The woods were very quite and peaceful. Until we noticed the 2 liter had went missing right behind us. Pretty open area as well. We thought maybe we just misplaced it. We never heard anything and the quite peaceful spot became quickly cold and eerily quite. Our hair on the back of our necks was standing on end and we both had goosebumps all of a sudden. We felt like eyes were on us... we packed up and hauled out real quick. No explanation still, but we can't go by that spot now without feeling uneasy. One of the most uncomfortable feelings I have ever had.
Been there. Visiting my parents out west on the coast they handed me a postcard addressed to me. Blank otherwise. "It happens in my profession", I explained.
I was on 11 mile trail in CO and out of nowhere, a dude walked through our camp holding a boom box over his head blasting metal. We were miles into the trail, so it was the oddest thing to see. The only thing I can think of is he was making loud noises to keep bears away.😅
Haha sounds like it! In Australia my husband and I would sneak silently through the bush, and see lots of wildlife. Now we live in Northwest of USA, and we talk loud, sing, stomp, anything to make sure the critters hear us. We see bear sign all the time, and heard a cougar call just off the trail once 😅
@ausican4ever oh man, I love Australia. I studied at UWA in Perth, and what a beautiful blessing it was. It's totally different here in the States. My best friend visited me from Perth and she was amazed by the mountains...garden of the gods. Crazy you moved here from Oz, and we're meeting in the comment section by coincidence.
I am a hunter. So being outside at all hours of the night is pretty normal to me. I also possess proper thermal imaging tech. Also for safety reasons to not unnecessarily endanger any people crawling around in the woods or fields at night. There are those nights and evenings were things suddenly go quiet within mere minutes lasting for about 10-90/100min accompanied by a creeping feeling of staying really still and quiet for no apparent reason. They are rare but they happen. You feel the energy shift when it’s over and preferably leave after that.
If I were alone in the forest and I heard heavy footsteps like that every horror movie I've seen would be going through my mind...really really scary stuff! I'm glad you're okay!!!
Thank you for posting this and sharing your experience. As a female solo camper, I've found it's so important to feel safe and be comfortable to say I'm out of here. The more this is normalised by people such as yourself the better. Trust your gut - always.
Good advice! I had my fair share of "Nope, not gonna camp here tonight" situations, let it be a strange feeling, strange sounds or just the wrong mind space. But I do however believe in being proactive whenever I meet someone in the dark. I lived in a small village and the bus station was a 1 mile walk through an unlit forest path. We all had to go through there and coming home from partying in the city, I often walked alone, sometimes hearing footsteps behind me, sometimes being someone who followed a girl in 50m distance. I learned to always make myself visible, heard or even plain tell the girl in front of me "Don't worry" or even fall back a bit more. Cause I found myself upping the pace if someone was heardbehind me and I know how someone in front of me would feel. It ALWAYS turned out nice, it always gave both of us more comfort and eased minds. If I would stumble upon your camp, I would make myself known, explaining I'm just collecting mushroom, asking if I can approach etc. I strongly believe it's the passiveness of either one or both parties that make these encounters terrifying. Nothing more calming than seeing the others open palm. That's why waving hands was invented in the first place :-)
You done the right thing. I had to leave a couple of times, the worse was at night hearing movement then what topped it was the voices around my camp while I was alone. If you don't feel safe, it's best to cut your losses. Good on you for sharing 👍🏻
we did a camp few weeks back and I heard a woman's voice , talking only low didn't hear any body speak back thought maybe somebody walking nearby n on her phone , although strange in the pitch black gone midnight!! my hubby was sorta half asleep said he didn't hear then literally 2 mins later again heard the same voice ! hubby got out the tent and shone the torch around couldn't see anybody. we've had several unexplained events whilst camping.

A retired game warden of 35 years once told me he never ever goes into the woods without being armed because you never know what you may encounter. Two legged are the most dangerous. Sounded like good advice.

That sheet hung over the stump as a ghost is a warning sign that somebody has recently been there and doesn’t want visitors. You mentioned these woodlands were a walk from your house. Perhaps a more secluded camping area would reduce the possibilities of coming into contact with other people.
My friend and I were super excited to winter camp. We parked about a 20 min walk away from where we setup. We made 2 trips to the car. When we got done the 2nd trip we were setting up and I noticed there were foot prints in the snow leaving our camp in a direction we didnt go, and the snow had no prints when we started. We both said "nope!" And somehow packed everything back up to make 1 trip to the car then drovr home and camped in my neighbors back yard. Lol.
I’ve watched many of these camping videos. I’ve only camped once and realized I don’t really like it but i still like watching. And I had to try it once. Even though there mostly the same. Flat ground, tarp, tent, chop wood, fire, cook food , sleep. I watched you do none of that and this was one of the best camping videos I’ve seen. I saw genuinely someone that was worried. And at the end when you talked and explained, it all made sense for you to leave. Your choice was yours and I respect that you made the decision you made. Thank you for being real. Hey mate, when animals or birds in your surrounding area usually stop making noises it means theres something/someone there and naturally they quiet down to not attract it as they feel a danger, usually birds sing when they feel safe and not in danger. And whatever was there was def not good. Glad you left shortly after. Stay safe out there brotha.
You know that the predator they are trying to not get eaten by, might be you? Plenty of times has the nature gone quiet simply due to my own presence. They thought I was trying to get them! 😂 So it isn’t particularly weird at all for the nature to go silent suddenly.
When I was 16 years old I was walking down the street and some guys I didn't know came up behind me walking kinda fast and it set off alarms in my head, I chose to ignore my instincts and ended up getting sucker punched and jumped. To this day I have a scar on my retina to remind me to trust my instincts. It's better to be safe and appear a bit cowardly or foolish than to be brave when bravery is not necessary or beneficial and end up getting hurt or worse
I remember one time i was camping with a group on a mountain near a lake and one of my friends was scared during the night. Because of some noises outside his tent. Turns out it was just sheep that time 😉 But well done for listening to your gut Josh, like you said its better safe than sorry and I'm so glad that you realised that, regardless of what was actually out there😊
Unfortunately, there are people out there who do some very strange things. I had a very uncomfortable experience once as a teenager camping with my scout group. This was at a campsite, too, not even somewhere wild. I was sharing a tent with two girls about my age, I think maybe 16 or 17. I woke up in the middle of the night and saw the shadow of a man in the porch area of the tent. Just sitting there, not moving. I wondered if it might be the boyfriend of one of the girls I was sharing the tent with, as he was also on the campsite with us. But she was asleep, and it wasn't like he was trying to wake her or anything. After maybe a few minutes, I sat up and said "Hello?" and whoever it was quickly left. I don't believe it was her boyfriend otherwise he probably would've replied to me. We were camping with some other scout groups who we didn't know well. I can't decide if it's worse if it was someone from our group or not. Scary stuff. Being a teenager, I didn't think much of it at the time and didn't even mention it to anyone. So yeah, if people can be brazen enough to do that, I think people spying on your wild camp is very possible. It was a good instinct for you to leave and stay safe, and there's no point staying if you are no longer enjoying it anyway!
2 years ago I was camping by myself and was awakened by the sound of tree limbs being shaped off of a dead pine tree in rapid succession. It was very loud and close, maybe 20 yds. I immediately jumped ot of my hammock and ran over to my truck and jumped into the bed while panning my flashlight around. I never did see anything or hear any footsteps leaving. I spent the rest of the night in the cab of the truck. My friend showed up the next day and we camped the next night. In the morning my friend asked me if I had gotten up in the night to prank him by poking him through his tent. I too had felt something nudging me through the tarp over my hammock that night. The only explanation we could come up with was a curious black bear. I'll never know but it still gives me goose bumps.
The dead do not communicate with the living. The bird could have been it's own warning. Unfortunately I believe it you've experienced a loved one, it's a demon. Using your emotions to trick you.

fully agree, if your gut says leave, LEAVE!!!!. I camped at a nice place in the mountains and I was the only one in camp, about 8 places but because it was early Winter, no one else was there. I decided the next day on the morning to take a little hike on the farm and explore the abandoned worker houses in the mountain, they always tell such wonderful tales and the last house on the furthest point was in between some "forest" or as we call it here "eucalyptus forest", very devoid of undergrowth due to the trees killing anything around it with it's oils. Strange sounds came from the forest, little cracks of twigs etc and I know for a fact, living and growing up between those forests, they do not do that. A branch falling and seeds falling has specific sounds however those was like something was out there. I immediately made myself known, loud and started walking away watching my back because as that area has leopards. I was not paying attention but on my path back I noticed tracks and they do not belong to dogs so they must be a big cat and this had smaller tracks with it. I was very lucky because I infringed on the area where this mother had a cub and that was a big NO NO. I watched my back and made a b-line for the camping site, once back it was all normal. Like this gentlemen said in his video, listen to nature, you will know because what I missed was the incredible silence that befell me at that moment in the forest and that is a clear sign of something not being OK. Thank you for sharing your video and man I wish I could do what you do, I live in a very dangerous part of my country and I have to drive very very far to go and do what you do so count yourself very lucky. Friends of mine who are a couple went camping with their dog one night in rural New Brunswick and when they got their campfire up and running they heard someone approaching. The man seemed strange but they were cordial and offered a beer. They then tried to say goodnight to the man but he seemed really mad about it but still left. Maybe 20 min later he came back with a machete and tried to attack them. Thank goodness the dog kept him at bay until they got to safety of the truck and the dog was unharmed. He was arrested and spent 6 years in jail for the attack. Wild.
Great video, from seeing your normal videos you can see how uncomfortable you were. Definitely the right decision to leave but also helpful to see a camp 'go wrong' that's genuine and not click bait. Keep up the good work 👍🏼👍🏼
I've never believed in spooky stuff, aliens, ghosts, etc. However, I do believe in the nastiness of humans. Humans can be wonderful creatures, but they can also be dangerous and act in a vicious way towards a stranger for no reason. My friend went on a camping and kyacking trip around 5 years ago. He was solo and didn't know the area he was staying in. Like you , he'd heard noises earlier in the evening and ignored them. At around 3am, he heard a noise outside his tent at his kyack. It was 4 travellers who'd spotted his camp and had come to take his kyack. They violently attacked him and stole his kyack. He managed to run away. A benefit of being a club runner. You did the correct thing to leave. It's best to be safe.
It looks like there's something behind the tree in the very back at 16:03 - 16:06, but when you pan away and pan back at 16:10 it's gone. I could be seeing things or it could just be brush coupled with the angle changing, video artifacting, etc. Still glad you listened to your gut and got out of there.

This summer while wild camping, it was a beautiful clear night. I decided to go for a walk with my headlamp turned off. I started to record the night sky and I was talking about the night sky. I sent the video a friend on Discord. I started getting that odd feeling that I wasn't alone, so I put my phone in my pocket and headed to my tent. I got in my tent and I thought I could hear something, so I froze, laying there with my arm propping me up in an odd way... I then heard a man's voice. It was muffled... but the it stopped. It's nearly midnight and I am in the middle of nowhere, yet I could hear a man's voice for a bit... then there it was again! He was close, but I couldn't make out what he had said... and then silence... and then his voice again. I decided it was time to pull out my phone and text my wife... that's when I realised the video message I had sent my friend was playing on loop in my pocket!
😂 me and my brother had a similar experience. We were camping in a national forest and found a nice spot with several trees to hang our hammocks from. One of the trees had a hollow at the base that went up a few feet where it turned and ended in a hole on the side of the tree about 6 ft up. Well my brother stuck his jbl Bluetooth speaker into the hollow tree as it amplified the volume. Well fast forward several hours later and a few cups of “mushroom “ tea. We started hearing noises and knowing we were the only people for miles around we were on edge and so needless to say we were tripping balls. When we finally realized where the sounds was coming from we had one of the best laughs in years. That tree in the oconee forest will forever be known as the talking tree 😂

Many years ago, my husband and I took our three small children camping once in a remote mountainous area, hoping for a quiet family adventure. For most of the day, it was perfect-like something out of a movie. We hiked, skipped rocks, played games, and really soaked in the peacefulness of being completely alone out there. That is, until around 3 p.m., when an unexpected pair came out of the forest: a man and his young son, about 11 years old. Oddly, they were both barefoot. At first, they seemed friendly. We made small talk and were cordial, but something just felt… off. Despite our polite attempts to signal we wanted some family time, they wouldn’t leave. The man even picked up my husband's guitar and started playing, while his son settled into a card game with our kids as if they'd known each other for ages. As dinner approached, we hinted that it was time for them to go, saying we only had enough food for our family. But the man was insistent, even offering to gather wood for our fire. Then, as it got darker, the boy asked, “Can we stay the night with y’all?” The dad chimed in, “We won’t be a bother, we don’t need to eat, we’re just enjoying the company.” My husband, trying to keep things light but firm, told them it was probably best they head back before dark. That’s when things took a creepy turn. The man stood up, looked at us coldly, and said in a serious tone, “Fine, we were just being friendly. Sleep well.” Then he turned to his son, who suddenly looked at me with this strange, pleading expression and asked, “Will you be my momma?” That sent chills down my spine. I tried to respond kindly, urging him to catch up with his dad. They walked off into the woods… but we could still hear them. For hours, it sounded like they were walking in circles just beyond the edge of our campsite. By 10 p.m., we couldn’t shake the sense that something wasn’t right. We woke the kids, packed them into the car, and left everything-tent and all-behind. We drove down the mountain in silence, our hearts pounding. We came back the next day to retrieve our things, but I’ll never forget the unsettling feeling of that night or the strange pair who nearly made us question everything about the peacefulness we’d gone looking for.

@@campingwithjosh After the man and his son left, my daughters said the father gave them the creeps, and they were glad he was gone. In hindsight, we shouldn't have allowed him to stay as long as he did, but we were trying to balance being kind and cautious. It's been nearly 18 years ago, and the girls still bring up the scary man at the campsite.
Hi Josh, im Jim im 61 33:30 and i often solo wild camp, totally different than wild camping with my son whos 30 and his dog and my friend also early 30s. Ive also been wild camping for many years, usually in woodland and near ancient sites. Ive had a few strange and unexplained experiencies. Last autumn me and my friend were camping at a familiar ancient site in a woodland and we heard drumming. We left the camp to investigate and say hello. It was just before dark. As we walked out of the woods and up a track towards the ancient burial mound with standing stones the drum beat continued but as we arrived there was no one there. The silence was deafening, we spent a while looking in every direction, and there was no where for anyone to hide. Im glad i wasnt solo on that one. We went back to the camp and had food and beer and have often talked about it since.
I grew up in a haunted house and I think that the woods around it was also haunted. I don't believe in spirits but I do believe in things you shouldn't mess with. I used to wake up with three fingered scratches on me and they would burn like someone put cinnamon in a open wound. And as I've gotten older I've heard plenty of stories that were very similar to yours. When you encounter stuff like that it is best to leave. After moving out of my old house I haven't had much trouble since. I certainly sleep better. Glad you and your family are safe. 👍

I had a camp once in my fav spot in the woods , id hammocked there loads of times so quite , peaceful , i was reading a book i put it down as it was getting too dark to see , something was telling me i have to go pack up and leave some kind of energy i dont know what to call it , i knew i was not in any danger i was just being told to leave now !!! i packed up so quickly and walked in the dark with a torch through the wood then another wood , across fields all the time something an energy , force was following me , i had an over whelming feeling that it was making sure i was going home but making sure i was safe , i felt it stop but still there when i reach the edge of my housing estate , just making sure i was safe , i can not explain it , ive been back loads of times since and camped and felt very welcomed josh is right listen to yourself its no big deal going home x
Get an air horn. Its incredibly loud and will certainly shock and startle any person nearby that isn't expecting it and is trying to be stealthy. Its a big, massive audio disruption and loud noise is 1 of the humans natural fears. That is... If it is human
Ha! That's funny. That's what we use in the French Quarter where I live if we are out after dark. Doesn't necessarily scare the muggers but the people opening their doors next to the sidewalk, cursing about the noise, makes them run.
Thats.... probably one of the worst ideas I've heard. So you make an extremely loud noise thats definitely going to affect you more than anyone who's out who knows how far away hiding? And even if they do jump or something, you still have an AIR HORN going off in your hand.
Had a similar experience and I slipped off into the woods and just waited. Sure enough someone crept up in my camp and i just watched them. Then i slipped into the light with the ole pew pew. Man you should’ve seen his face 😂😂
My sister and I were camping at Gifford Pinchot National Forest at Cat Creek campground in the US. This was in early October.Our second night, we just made a pot of coffee. It was about 6:30 pm and just getting dark. We were the only campers there. A truck pulls in, slow rolls and pulls around a circle area behind some trees, and turns off everything. We look at eachother and immediately pour the coffee on the fire, break camp in record speed, all the while watching everything. We both had that bad gut instinct without saying it. Scariest thing we've been through camping for years up there.
Glad you trusted your instinct and made it back safe. It could’ve been nothing, but you can never be too careful. Very recently here in the US, a young man was found dead in his tent and was suspected to be the victim of a bear attack. Turned out, another man stumbled upon his campsite and the victim invited him to join him at the campfire. They had a chat and a beer, but at some point, the lunatic just decided to knock the camper over the head with a piece of wood and hack him up with a screwdriver and an axe. It’s a rare case, but still, it proves there are some crazies out there and fear can be useful sometimes.
I was in the Army We always set up camp with a perimeter around our base at knee height using parachute cord. We had flares and thunder flashes that would be set off if the cord was disturbed , but maybe you could use tin cans that would attract your attention? Scary situation for you to be in , thanks for sharing and being honest I see other people on these wild camping videos, they really seem so vulnerable to me , everything is not wrapped up in cotton wool. I hope this experience hasn’t put you off enjoying what nature has to offer ❤

While camping deep in the wilderness, what truly unnerves me isn’t the thought of encountering wild animals or even the so-called "paranormal"-it’s people. People terrify me the most. Imagine this: you’re miles away from civilization, enveloped by endless trees and an almost oppressive silence. Then, out of nowhere, you see them. A person. No backpack, no gear-nothing to explain why they’re there. Just wandering aimlessly through your area, as if they belong to the forest itself. There’s something deeply wrong about it, something that makes the shadows seem darker and the silence deafening. It’s the kind of fear you don’t shake, even long after they’re gone… if they leave at all. Appalachian experiences...

My family and i were in northern Ontario a cpl of years ago, we stumbled upon this great camp site and decided to stay for a week or so. By the second day my wife and i started hearing whispering, i did a scout around my camp with a kinetic projectile tool with zero findings. The place where we were camped happened to be a birch forest, I decided to practice some bushcraft/ building skills and cut down a few saplings for my projects. After i was done all of my bushcraft stuff my wife and i were sitting around and thats when the whispering started to get worse it got so bad as to the point where we could literally hear it inside of our camper. I went outside again and did another sweep of the entire area this time i could literally hear them following me but could not see anything or anyone or any sign of tracks or disruptions in the forest of someone there, we came to the conclusion that the woods were haunted and that we actually stumbled upon a section of "whispering woods" wife and i were kinda creeped out so we left. Its kinda funny because we thought we were lucky to find such a great spot but realized why nobody was there to begin with!
Josh, the most dangerous animal you will ever encounter out in the wild is other people. They can be real random. You wouldn't have been able to relax or settle down to sleep if you had stayed. The dogs barking proved something or someone was out there. I wouldn't have stayed either.
TL:DR - Lived in a house with 2 acres of woods, entire right side of property was spooky. Just something not right.. Everyone whoever came over felt uneasy like something was watching them. I grew up in a house that was built in the 1800s, a cool house on a little over 2 acres that belonged to the church for 100+ years. After that it became a care home for children that were.. well.. violent or mentally insane. After that business closed my parents bought it fairly cheap because it needed a lot of work to restore it back into a home. The house was set far back enough that it couldn't been seen from the road due to the amount of trees/bush. On the right side of the house there was an archway of trees coming all the way from the front fence, all the way to the back garden of the house. My entire family were eating dinner maybe a week after we moved in, we were all chatting at the dinner table and then my sister mentioned that she always felt something on the right side of the property.. Table fell quiet. My Dad said him and my mum felt it too and they put it down to just it being new and it was spooky living in the woods when we were used to living in a bungalow in the city. It wasn't just us that felt it though, the postman felt it, my friends felt it without me even mentioning it.. It was that strong of a presence I'd have to walk them down the driveway when it was time to leave because they were too scared to go alone, even during the day (we were 10/11 at the time). My mum/dads friends would ask them to see them to the car because they were spooked out by the feeling. It became a sort of fun game, we would invite people over and not tell them.. and just wait to see if they said anything about it.. 7/10 times they did. One autumn/winter night, my mum came back from shopping with my sister. They parked the card along the side of the house which is where the front and side door were. They got out and popped the boot (trunk) and both saw something run past the front of the car into the right side of the property.. We all ran outside hearing the screams but they were manic.. ran inside. Dad calmed them down.. they explained they saw a tall figure run into the trees but said it didnt look like a man. They both swear to this day that they saw something. One night I was taking a bath on that side of the house, the window was directly next to the archway. The windows had old wooden shutters on the inside that you could close with bars. My Dad said they were from the blitz so the house could be blacked out during bombing runs. I would always close them when in the bath.. One night I was bathing in there and from that right side of the house I heard a horse hooves hitting the ground.. heard almost like wheels on dirt.. but it continued for what felt like 20 minutes.. And then it just stopped. Turns out that archway was where they used to bring in the horse and cart from the street, they would go down the archway and at the back out the house was an annex where my grandparents lived.. That annex used to be a horse stable. In the 10-12 years we lived there so much happened that's unexplainable. I still don't know that I believe in ghosts as such but there was a lot there that made me believe there is something that we don't understand.
@@peculiarstraw8648 Shit got even spookier inside the house. Turns out the entire right quarter of the house had burned down at some point, which back in the 1800s was the servants quarters.. I heard crying from there, saw shadows of people moving, heard a bell at like 4am (which I later learned the head servant would ring a bell to wake up the cooks to prepare breakfast). From outside the house I would see light, almost like candle light flickering in window but the rooms were empty.. There was a basement, on the old house plans it was the entire length/width of the house but at some point it had been completely concreted in, only a small corridor remained.. My Dad noticed that whenever the door was open, our family dogs wouldn't go near it. He would call the dogs over with the door closed and then open it and they would run away as fast as they could.. Something ominous down there obviously. I'd had things thrown at me, saw kitchen drawers open and stuff jump out.. Saw blinds twist open/closed by themselves.. The last year I lived there, I had a stereo system in my room.. it had been in there for 10+ years.. I barely ever used it since technology progressed and I had spotify, etc. If I did turn it on to listen to the radio, it would default to a local radio station. Well, for a week straight, 7 whole days, at around 4pm, the radio would turn on at full volume, white noise, no radio station tuned in.. Just blasting white noise at max volume. It did it for 7 whole days and then stopped. I know no one was doing it because we were all together in the kitchen (we would all hang out in there as a family and talk/sit at the table drink tea, etc) at least 4 out of the 7 days it happened. I checked to see if there was a way to set a timer or program it and there was not.. Stories could go on and on.. Lot of weird shit
It was a cool but creepy looking camp! I can't lie, I'd have been Running out of there. Give you a lot of credit. Just glad you went with your gut, and you're safe!!
Me and a friend, both in seperate tarps, both heard footsteps right outside our shelters. Looked out, nobody there. Being two of us did make the difference though. You did right to bale out.

I was camping, Solo, up in Montana/USA, I had no bear spray, no gun, a tiny knife, a 200db Air Horn, headlight 450 lumens and it was raining with a thunderstorm up on a Ridge 9200ft elevation. It was around 1am when I set up camp. Pitch black and high wind, flashing lightning too. This was mid summer 2013, my tent was a Taco Tarp wrap/Bivvy bag setup for high wind. No one up there in Grizzly Bear country but me, I was wrapped up, hunkered down under a thick tree with many branches surrounding me. A Bear came into my NO FIRE camp and could smell me out. I saw something big and dark beyond my enclosure so I pulled out my Alaskan Cow Bell and shook it violently. It was super LOUD, the grunting Bear took off running away from me but came back 20 minutes later. I repeated the process and didn't see it again. The next morning I saw the prints and it was a Black Bear by its toe claws. I was up on that 25 mile range for only 1 night and the next day in a Hotel room. Pretty wild for shurr
A lot of people say "Aw JUSTa Black Bear 🐻...NOPE .. apparently they haven't seen the ready made video of a smaller bb dragging a good size"calf"( almost grown)It's dragging it off alive while it's disemboweled and was eating it alive and it was bawling, heaving it around like it's nothing...They can run up trees. Bears love fast food lol I had a very lucid dream that I died like that and could feel the pain after I woke, so I'm trying to stear clear;)

It's surprising how much noise just a squirrel can make, I was whittling a stick sat on a log and thought I heard a person running up behind me. Then turned around to see it skimming along the forest floor.
I just want to say that I'm happy you made this video because I have not come across anyone else who has spoken about this topic. Other videos show the calm and fun aspect of camping, but there's another side of it that is dangerous, especially if you're in unfamiliar surroundings/alone. I'm glad that you shared this, especially that you didn't try to make yourself the hero, and you kept it real.
Eerie mist, rain, strange noises, rustling in the bush, twigs cracking, slight barking and howling. Well sir, there is only one thing it could be... and that is.... The Hound of the Baskervilles. In all serious though, well done for looking after yourself. I can remember a camp I did a year ago and it didn't feel right. Similar situation to yours, misty, rain, hearing thuds. I stuck it out for a while then around 23:00 it was pitch black and I heard a deep thud behind my tent. I got out of my tent instantly ice cold with fear, switched on my head torch and looked behind my tent and saw a very large silhouette in the clearing with 2 large green eyes. Honestly, I froze solid and stopped breathing for a short spell. I genuinely felt terrified. After a few seconds the silhouette moved slightly and groaned with a large puff of smoke from its mouth. Then when my sense came back to me I realised it was a Cow. The relief I felt was such that I felt 10 stone lighter after the my fear dissipated. But I couldn't relax then, I kept hearing other thuds and twigs cracking around my camp and the strange fear came back. I packed up and headed straight home.
Anything about Camping is it so darn peaceful during the day and then it gets spooky at night it’s like a dichotomy so I don’t do it anymore. I’m 72. I travel 3000 miles with a friend on mopeds through Europe and that was amazing but anyway, happy trails. Nice to meet you. I’ll be watching
I think i can understand you mate..been many times on my own in the mountains in north of Italy where i come from..born there,allways felt at home..but couple of times i had some "funny" things happening..the very same place i've been since i was i kid..so i dig you man

That dog wasn’t happy either... definitely good shout to leave. I really want to wild camp but being a single disabled woman ive never been brave enough, hopefully one day ill get the balls to do it. Would love some safety advice from others on here who have gone out. Thanks!
No getting around the fact we are more vunerable when alone so if you can, go out with a buddy or group. Makes all the difference if you are unsure about camping out by yourself. Ive been spooked a few times being alone and it's not nice even as a big hairy ugly dude lol! It doesnt happen often but here in the UK its just the few human weirdo's we have to be careful of.
You could start with simple daytime excursions in the spring. Go out during the day not too far from parking and pitch a tent and enjoy some time in nature for an hour. Pack up and next time add on making a fire or something. I can’t do it either, but there are ways to get out in nature without all the stress that darkness/sleeping solo brings. That’s a little too vulnerable for me to want to do alone.
@suec3215 that's a really good idea, especially as I suffer with chronic pain would be a good way of having a rest etc. Will definitely come back and comment once I've been brave and gone on some adventures to let you know how it goes. Thanks for that suggestion.

I took my little grandson camping in a caravan park. We were at the scruffy end of the area and l also booked a caravan in case it got too scary or very wet. All bases covered, we had a great time and he learnt to put up and dismantle his own tent. Maybe you could camp out in a safe place until you have experience and confidence.
South african here. There is a place near my town with a beautiful waterfall surrounded by forest and clean water that runs from the mountain. Unfortunately with time it's become dangerous. Anyway 2 of my friends went fishing there and they kept hearing movement in the bushes behind them but Everytime they looked they didn't see anything. Then my friend decided he would wait a bit and suddenly turn around and as he did he saw a man duck down. They dropped their rods and called for the man to come out. He didn't. So he drew his firearm (licensed BTW) and told the guy to show himself but this guy took off. They knew there and then it was time to leave. It's really sad when u can't go to nice places anymore becuz of people. And yes if you have a bad feeling about a place best to be safe and leave.

I'm glad you left when you did! This reminds me of my first time bike-packing. I was late to my destination on my first day, cycling with my gear on a dirt road in the bush, with little light left. A ute came along and pulled over, turned its lights off and the driver shrieked out the window. I ignored it and kept going, and then the ute turned to follow me. My heart pounded and I just kept pedalling, trying to keep my cool. I think it is important to remain assertive, even if you're feeling unsettled and planning to leave. Predators look for weakness before they attack. Fortunately, it was just a young larrikin, but I could have instead run into a mad man.

It seems to me there is an awful lot of people in the UK that like to mess with campers. Though it happens in the US, it's far less. Most campers over here are packing heat, and screwing with someone in the middle of the night is a good way to meet your maker!

I was just about to write a detailed response about how I've done hundreds of solo back country camping trips from the west coast of Canada to the east coast and nothing creepy has ever happened to me. But then I remembered the few encounters that would be right at home in a video like this. Hasn't ever stopped me from doing what I love but I'd be lying if I said I didn't lay awake in my tent sometimes thinking about those unexplained, ominous encounters.

It used to be customary to announce your presence to a camp before coming in, skulking around the perimeter of a camp was was a big no-go and considered threatening. Definitely right to pack up if intuition is on high alert.
Indeed, very bad manners not to announce yourself but I guess very few people have experienced the dome of light of a campfire, how hard it is to see past it and how vulnerable it makes you feel.
Creeping up on a person's campsite is a particularly dangerous proposition. Here in the woods of Missouri it could certainly add lead to your diet. Bad for one's health that is.

I feel like that's still human instinct, even in today's age. To approach someone camping in the wilderness and not announce yourself is just really odd behavior.

Long time ago now but when I was 14 years old back in 1994, camping in the Australian outback with my late Father, uncle and my cousin. Sitting around the fire not long after the sun fully set, my dad and uncle was sharing some stories like normal and then all of a sudden my uncle just stopped talking, looked at my father with concern and sort of made a slight hand gesture to us all to be quiet, he grabbed his rifle from next to him and just shot it into a massive blue gum tree that was only about 30 feet from where we was sitting and two men got up from out of the bushes and just took off running into the distance, my uncle screamed out at them and fired a few shots in the air, never seen the two strangers again. All of us completely scared just packed up and left for the night. Big story my family have always spoken about over the years. It’s a scary thought to think what would of maybe happened or what them 2 strangers intentions were if my uncle never went with his gut instinct thinking something was there and firing a warning shot into a tree and scaring them off.
Is it weird to think that among all the creatures that could be creeping up on you and lurking in the bushes next to your campsites, other humans are among the worst options that I can imagine? Idk why that is. Maybe because animals sneaking around is normal, but other people sneaking up on your camp is weird and creepy.

@@hudimudi its easy to tell an animal's motivation. Threatened, hungry, or territorial. A human's motivation is not so easily known. I think that's where that heightened sense of danger comes from when it comes to a human. Not to mention all the things a human can do to you that an animal can't.

Humans have a capacity to inflict much more harm on you than an animal cause in that situation, some human, stalking you in the woods, they don't know you, they are some sick person that just wants to hurt people.

Im from South Africa and we as a family did quite a bit of wild camping. One weekend we went to a place up in the timber forest named Shayalongubi. It was beside a gorgeous lake and had old fishing shacks in between the trees. It was also on the border of Mozambique during a period of civil unrest. We bedded ourselves down, hubby, 3 kids, the dog and I and were soon sound asleep. At about 2am the dog started doing a low, slow growl. First I, then hubby woke up slightly dazed by a bright light in our faces and about 6 automatic guns of various caliber pointed at us. It was a squad of anti terrorist trackers and they'd smelt our fire and come to investigate. A couple of strong coffees later to warm their cotton socks and they bade us good night, stay safe and went on their way. It was only the next morning that my son cheerfully voiced what we had all been thinking. "Thank God it was the good guys who found us"

Similar thing happened to me over 10 years ago when I was backpacking across Newfoundland but maybe worse. I was following an old rail line that had been converted into a hiking trail. That day of hiking I came across an old abandoned community. Not really a town, but a bunch of boarded up little cottages and trailers. It felt eery, but also cool. I explored a couple of the abandoned trailers but realized the sun was starting to wane. As cool as the little community was I did NOT want to sleep there at night so I started quickly walking down the trail. The community kept going though and I quickly realized I would have to sleep in one of the abandoned lots as it was getting dark, I picked one without a building on it, just an old rusty truck with broken windows slowly being swallowed up by a ravine. I setup the tent, had some dinner and got ready to go to sleep. I was on edge, but being many miles from any real town or road, I didn't have much of a choice so I fell asleep.
Not sure when it happened but I awoke at some point and could hear clear footsteps walking around my tent. I calmed myself and slowly, and quietly, took out my knife. The footsteps stopped at the entrance to my tent. I got ready, my plan was that if whoever it was tried opening my tent, I would stab first and ask questions later, as no-one with good intentions would have any reason to open my tent door in the middle of the night unannounced. I don't know if he heard me move in the tent or he never planned to come in but after standing for a bit I heard him walk off into the woods. I waited a long time, kind of paralyzed in fear, wondering what to do. I was completely alone with no vehicle in a woods I didn't know far from any town on a map. After waiting for what felt like hours I got out, packed my stuff faster then I've ever packed before and took off down the trail in the pitch black. I just walked and walked until the sun came out. When I hit the next town I got a hotel and stayed there for a few nights.
My theory is that not every building was actually abandoned in the little community. Someone likely watched me walk in and was curious about me and my camp. It's creepy to think they likely watched me walking during the day and either followed me to my camp or went out looking for me at night when they thought I'd be asleep.
Had a group of night stalkers walk past my scout camp at 2am. Hearing them whisper what should they do... they had ill intent but there was a lot of us.

Once I was camping solo in the middle of woods than I woke up to some animal noise around the tent and started to listen, then it became quiet and I started to hear steps not like chaotic animal footsteps but human steady pace. It was lasting like 45 min and I went to investigate but saw no one and then I realized because I was trying to lay still and didn’t move much my pulse on my neck was touching my sleeping bag and it was almost perfect sound of someone walking. Almost shat myself 😂

Man I was staying in my friends truck during snowfall in the sierras and it sounded like canons where going off all night. Could hear people moving around, crazy.

Years ago i went out solo and didn't tell anyone, i got camp set up and was getting the fire going and i looked down the trail and i swear to god man there was a large, tall, black silhouette in the middle of the trail about 20 yards from me. I tried to ignore it, not a big foot or something lol and then i heard a whistle. I know i fucking heard it and it did spook me, I calmly packed up and left. 😊

100%... I only ever abandoned camp 1 time after the whole evening feeling off. I was so on edge that I didn't even feel comfortable to drink whisky as my body was screaming at me to stay alert. I packed up my stuff a bit after midnight and got out on the double. a few days later I heard from a friend that the police found a couple of druggies living on the edge of that forest after they robbed a couple of hikers.
I tell my sons that. It’s a power we have inherited from our ancestors. They used to walk around thousands of years ago every foot they would go something would try to kill them. Their instincts kept them alive.

Watched this 3 times and the horror atmosphere is still the same, no creepy background music and no jumpscares, everything is natural and truly scary in nature.. convinced me not to go solo camping, solo with friends is always the best.
Killington vermont 2022. My ex girlfriend (who was an absolute bad ass) was walking through the woods as she often does. A man started to come up the trail behind her very quickly. She kept a steady pace and looked back the man was much closer. She was thinking of stopping and letting the man pass. She kept going but when she turned around this time he had picked up a huge club off the ground. She said she felt petrified. She was hiking with our doberman who jumped out of the woods and immediately knew something was off. He backed up next to her and looked at the man like "you want to try something?" The man looked at them and dropped his club and walked away. Lord knows what would have happened if she didn't have Lawson.

you know... I've been wild camping for years now. and I have had a couple of experiences like this myself. There was especially one that I will never forget. the feeling just came over me all of a sudden and out of nowhere, like I was being watched from behind. and every time I looked, I heard and saw nothing. but when I returned to whatever I was doing, it felt like they or "something" was right behind me... I ended up leaving that night too. But I will say this.... watching your video, the woods don't even look right! it seems as if something is off in the atmosphere, and that's through a screen!... brought that feeling straight back. - overall, it's a brilliant video, keep it up! lets hope the next one is a relaxing one for you!

Those woods and field look familiar. I watched a video about a year ago of a guy camping in woods very similar to yours, and he left abruptly for the same exact reasons. No ghost though, but the woods suddenly got eerily quiet and he also heard bipedal footfalls.

@@JonnyMack33 the one I saw wasn’t him, but was very similar as well. The guy went out with his dog and the woods had that same feel. The birds stopped singing and he heard some stuff out in the woods and he decided to leave. His dog was freaking out the whole time. The woods he was in was just a little island of woods in an open field similar to this one. I’m wondering if it is the same location now. At the end of the video he gets back to the car and all the birds scatter from the woods behind him and there’s a yell. It could have been staged or it could have been someone in the woods having fun messing with people.. or he could have actually been in danger. It’s better to trust your gut and leave safe.

Had a similar experience to your story at the end once, quite a few years ago fell on hard times snd was a vagrant, out walking on a woodland road late at night around 1 or 2 am and this feeling of "get the f off the road" overtook me
Went about 20 yards into the woods and sure enough, a truck pulled up right where i had been and 2 people got out with flashlights and followed me in. Mustve had a camera set up on the side of the road or something and saw me as i was walking.
I hid under fallen leaves and branches, and they searched around for about 30 minutes trying to find me. Never said a word, just heard them walking all around me breaking branches and smashing leaves. Eventually the footsteps went away but i was so terrified just laid there until the sun came up.
anytime i think about it i thank god they didn't find me. Theres freaks out there for sure, we both probably encountered similar kinds.

I greatly appreciate seeing these kinds of things from people who actually do this regularly to help me know what to pay attention to. I don't camp, but I like going for walks. I've stopped wearing headphones and it's good to know what I should be aware of in my surroundings.
A bluetooth speaker helps with that. Also arm yourself, if its with a firearm get a pittle training if you or practice at the range, or mace and taser. This world has gotten crazier by the day amd you gotta have some defence, God bless you and stay safe.

My wife booked an off the grid weekend in a cabin for our anniversary in a remote part of the mountains in the Western Cape in South Africa. Lovely place, but very isolated, difficult to reach in our sedan, and zero cell phone signal. There are leopards, baboons, foxes, other small cat species and jackal in the area so we hear some noises that sound like a jackal in the distance. By the time it's dark we had eaten and we left our food in the kitchen of the small cottage and then we went and relaxed in the outside hot tub which was under this massive oak tree about 15 meters from the cottage. We left the door open because, well, it's only us here. It is a moonless night and it is PITCH dark. All you see are these amazing stars and the milky way. At one point we decide to go to bed.
We get into the house and my wife looks at the table where she put down her leftover pork chop and she looks at me with this worried look and asks, "where is the pork chop"? At first I laughed, but then I saw these little marks of fat and pork juice leading from the table out of the house and into the blackness outside. We both look at each other in silence. At that moment I hear a loud hiss behind me and it's the frigging automatic fragrance dispenser thing. Anyway, we're on edge and my wife's list of possible culprits in order of likelihood are: 1) A ghost, 2) a monster, 3) a thief. I just thought it was a very sneaky baboon, or a small cat or even perhaps a leopard.
We lock the cabin and go to sleep. The next day we wondered whether the chop thief would return and whether we are safe or are we being watched. Turns out, we were.
It's the afternoon and the weather has become foul and my wife and I are lying in bed and reading our books.
Then I notice a face to my left and a hand touching the glass window and staring into our room, switching it's gaze between us and the plate on which the chop was the night before.
It was a mongoose. It's little paw was literally above it's eyes almost like it was trying to stop the glare from outside. When we left the next day our car was completely covered in little mongoose paw prints and we didn't wash it for a good couple of weeks. Everytime we drove to work we saw the mongoose paw on our windshield and we're reminded of the mongoose that stole our chop.
Agree! Listen to your gut. I used to do a lot of rock climbing. We had a saying, " There are old climbers and there are bold climbers. But there are no old, bold climbers." If you were up on a route and your gut said No Further, there was no shame in backing off. Live to climb, or hike, or camp another day. We knew too many great climbers that pushed it just one pitch too far and didn't live to see that next day.
I usually take my 100 lb German Shepard camping with me. She knows what's there way before I do. Last time I went camping in Colorado I ran into a couple of bears when I was getting ready to set up camp. One took a swipe at her but she did her job keeping them distracted long enough to get my mom and son to the car. I called her over and got her in and we went and got a motel room instead of camping out our last night. I LOVE my dog.
Last time we were In the boreal in northern Ontario, a bear showed up so I got out the Heavy bow and i stalked him as he stalked my camp, we decided to just leave because it was out last night anyways and we didn't want any problems with our kids and we didn't want to have to kill the bear because we are in his home and we need to respect their space.

@@aristideregnier4883 I never trained her to do that, it's her instincts. we have a bond. If the bear had got her, I would fight that bear to save her. our fates would have been the same. She knew what she was doing. She has the same faith in me as I do her.
The last thing she wants is to be left behind. And she is ALWAYS on guard duty. I couldn't change that if I wanted to.

Hey Josh. Had a very similar experience here in North West. Took my two daughters camping to a local woodland spot. Girls in my tent and myself in my hammock. Was laid in the hammock with my headphones in watching a film when I could hear loud footsteps coming through the woods in the leaves loud enough to hear even with headphones in. I jumped out of my hammock and did same as you. Hid being a tree knife in hand. I waited there 20 mins but footsteps had stopped and heard nothing. Litterally as soon as I got back in my hammock and headphone back in they started again. I repeated the same again 3 more times. Sat waiting being tree knife ready. But as normal steps stopped when I got out. I'd scanned the trees with head torch hoping to see the eyes of a fox or something but saw nothing. I laid awake all night as didn't want to wake the kids and scare them from camping again but was worst night camping I've ever had.

I'm from south Louisiana but one year my dad decided we were going to the ozark mountains for vacation. He wanted to visit caves and beautiful lookouts and actually camp in tents, etc... I had just turned 15 and this was before cell phones, so parents still had a chance to do outdoor things with their kids. One night we were camping near a place called Devils Den in NW Arkansas. We were all worn out and tired by dark. Not sure why but everyone got in the van to sleep, three of them, and left me in the tent. I woke up during the night burning up and got out to sleep on one of the picnic tables. There were two tables but one was covered with several coolers that were removed from the van. Among my family members, I was the only one who could sleep in the open like this. For some reason, mosquitoes and gnats will not bite or sting me. Must be something untasty about me lol. I'd thrown a few pieces of wood on the fire pit coals just to make a little light. Even though it was hot out, this was comforting. The table was hard but I fell asleep quickly. I was facing away from the other table. At some point I was awakened by noise behind me and I was frozen by fright, but I heard bread wrappers rustling and thought it must be my dad getting a midnight snack, as he was prone to do. So I turned over and came face to face with a very large bobcat. He looked at me and I looked at him. Eventually he went back to eating our provisions from the ice chest that he'd turned over. I felt very safe for some reason. Occasionally he would glance at me and then continue pilfering. Next thing I knew it was daylight and the parentals were getting up to make coffee. It looked like a bear had come through and demolished everything and my mother was having a fit over my being so close to the destruction lol. I told her to relax, it was just a big bobcat. She shrieked and asked why I didn't wake them! In typical teenage fashion I told her he was hungry and I didn't feel threatened. Where I was from in the swampland of Louisiana, there were many more threatening things than bobcats. Not a very scary story but its a fond memory.

I was camped out in the woods solo in the New Forest and believe me, many a time I packed my shit up and moved on after hearing strange sounds/voices and heavy footfall in what I believed was a very remote and little used section of the forest
To go off your statement I have spent years out in Wilverly by myself camping, walking and playing, at all times of the day or night. One warm summers evening went out taking photos with a mirror by myself. Went just inside by the dog agility course, set up my gear and snapped a picture. As it was taking (a long exposure) I felt something behind me, and the air for icy cold and my shallow breaths were steaming. I didn’t look then, but when the shutter closed there was a figure in the mirror. Never left anywhere as I quickly as I did then. When I tell the story now the hair stands up on my neck and I feel that fear. It’s strange running from place I know so well, but I don’t regret my decision one bit. Never been back in the night by myself though haha
I used to go camping alone all the time when I was younger. Been woken up by deer blowing at me, among other critters. The noise that an armadillo can make that sounds eerily like a person walking slowly is amazing. What it did it for me was one time at one of my favorite spots, very remote, I got up from my little fire area to walk into the woods to gather more wood. The woods were fairly thick but no undergrowth or low limbs in this area so even though there were a lot of trees, you could see through them pretty good. I made it maybe 30 yards into the woods and turned around to head back with my wood and seeing my campfire and tent through those trees creeped me out more than I could explain. It was very easy to see, but when you’re at the campfire you couldn’t see where I was, nothing beyond the ring of fire light. Just weirded me out that someone or some thing could easily watch me from very close and I wouldn’t know it. I finished the night without incident but I didn’t solo camp after that. Then later reading missing 411 just made it more creepy. Aside from paranormal or running into other people (which may be worse), just the myriad of simple things that could go wrong and leave you basically stranded for dead has made me take a buddy with me when I go camping now.
My wife and I went out day camping down an old trail way out in the woods. We set down a 2 liter by a tree by were we are sitting. The woods were very quite and peaceful. Until we noticed the 2 liter had went missing right behind us. Pretty open area as well. We thought maybe we just misplaced it. We never heard anything and the quite peaceful spot became quickly cold and eerily quite. Our hair on the back of our necks was standing on end and we both had goosebumps all of a sudden. We felt like eyes were on us... we packed up and hauled out real quick. No explanation still, but we can't go by that spot now without feeling uneasy. One of the most uncomfortable feelings I have ever had.

I was on 11 mile trail in CO and out of nowhere, a dude walked through our camp holding a boom box over his head blasting metal. We were miles into the trail, so it was the oddest thing to see. The only thing I can think of is he was making loud noises to keep bears away.😅

In Australia my husband and I would sneak silently through the bush, and see lots of wildlife.
Now we live in Northwest of USA, and we talk loud, sing, stomp, anything to make sure the critters hear us. We see bear sign all the time, and heard a cougar call just off the trail once 😅

I am a hunter. So being outside at all hours of the night is pretty normal to me. I also possess proper thermal imaging tech. Also for safety reasons to not unnecessarily endanger any people crawling around in the woods or fields at night.
There are those nights and evenings were things suddenly go quiet within mere minutes lasting for about 10-90/100min accompanied by a creeping feeling of staying really still and quiet for no apparent reason.
They are rare but they happen. You feel the energy shift when it’s over and preferably leave after that.

Good advice! I had my fair share of "Nope, not gonna camp here tonight" situations, let it be a strange feeling, strange sounds or just the wrong mind space.
But I do however believe in being proactive whenever I meet someone in the dark. I lived in a small village and the bus station was a 1 mile walk through an unlit forest path. We all had to go through there and coming home from partying in the city, I often walked alone, sometimes hearing footsteps behind me, sometimes being someone who followed a girl in 50m distance.
I learned to always make myself visible, heard or even plain tell the girl in front of me "Don't worry" or even fall back a bit more. Cause I found myself upping the pace if someone was heardbehind me and I know how someone in front of me would feel.
It ALWAYS turned out nice, it always gave both of us more comfort and eased minds. If I would stumble upon your camp, I would make myself known, explaining I'm just collecting mushroom, asking if I can approach etc.
I strongly believe it's the passiveness of either one or both parties that make these encounters terrifying. Nothing more calming than seeing the others open palm. That's why waving hands was invented in the first place :-)
You done the right thing. I had to leave a couple of times, the worse was at night hearing movement then what topped it was the voices around my camp while I was alone. If you don't feel safe, it's best to cut your losses. Good on you for sharing 👍🏻
we did a camp few weeks back and I heard a woman's voice , talking only low didn't hear any body speak back thought maybe somebody walking nearby n on her phone , although strange in the pitch black gone midnight!! my hubby was sorta half asleep said he didn't hear then literally 2 mins later again heard the same voice ! hubby got out the tent and shone the torch around couldn't see anybody. we've had several unexplained events whilst camping.

A retired game warden of 35 years once told me he never ever goes into the woods without being armed because you never know what you may encounter. Two legged are the most dangerous. Sounded like good advice.

That sheet hung over the stump as a ghost is a warning sign that somebody has recently been there and doesn’t want visitors. You mentioned these woodlands were a walk from your house. Perhaps a more secluded camping area would reduce the possibilities of coming into contact with other people.
My friend and I were super excited to winter camp. We parked about a 20 min walk away from where we setup. We made 2 trips to the car. When we got done the 2nd trip we were setting up and I noticed there were foot prints in the snow leaving our camp in a direction we didnt go, and the snow had no prints when we started. We both said "nope!" And somehow packed everything back up to make 1 trip to the car then drovr home and camped in my neighbors back yard. Lol.
I’ve watched many of these camping videos. I’ve only camped once and realized I don’t really like it but i still like watching. And I had to try it once. Even though there mostly the same. Flat ground, tarp, tent, chop wood, fire, cook food , sleep. I watched you do none of that and this was one of the best camping videos I’ve seen. I saw genuinely someone that was worried. And at the end when you talked and explained, it all made sense for you to leave. Your choice was yours and I respect that you made the decision you made. Thank you for being real. Hey mate, when animals or birds in your surrounding area usually stop making noises it means theres something/someone there and naturally they quiet down to not attract it as they feel a danger, usually birds sing when they feel safe and not in danger. And whatever was there was def not good. Glad you left shortly after. Stay safe out there brotha.

When I was 16 years old I was walking down the street and some guys I didn't know came up behind me walking kinda fast and it set off alarms in my head, I chose to ignore my instincts and ended up getting sucker punched and jumped. To this day I have a scar on my retina to remind me to trust my instincts. It's better to be safe and appear a bit cowardly or foolish than to be brave when bravery is not necessary or beneficial and end up getting hurt or worse
I remember one time i was camping with a group on a mountain near a lake and one of my friends was scared during the night. Because of some noises outside his tent. Turns out it was just sheep that time 😉

Unfortunately, there are people out there who do some very strange things.
I had a very uncomfortable experience once as a teenager camping with my scout group. This was at a campsite, too, not even somewhere wild.
I was sharing a tent with two girls about my age, I think maybe 16 or 17. I woke up in the middle of the night and saw the shadow of a man in the porch area of the tent. Just sitting there, not moving. I wondered if it might be the boyfriend of one of the girls I was sharing the tent with, as he was also on the campsite with us. But she was asleep, and it wasn't like he was trying to wake her or anything.
After maybe a few minutes, I sat up and said "Hello?" and whoever it was quickly left. I don't believe it was her boyfriend otherwise he probably would've replied to me. We were camping with some other scout groups who we didn't know well. I can't decide if it's worse if it was someone from our group or not.
Scary stuff. Being a teenager, I didn't think much of it at the time and didn't even mention it to anyone.
So yeah, if people can be brazen enough to do that, I think people spying on your wild camp is very possible. It was a good instinct for you to leave and stay safe, and there's no point staying if you are no longer enjoying it anyway!
2 years ago I was camping by myself and was awakened by the sound of tree limbs being shaped off of a dead pine tree in rapid succession. It was very loud and close, maybe 20 yds. I immediately jumped ot of my hammock and ran over to my truck and jumped into the bed while panning my flashlight around. I never did see anything or hear any footsteps leaving. I spent the rest of the night in the cab of the truck. My friend showed up the next day and we camped the next night. In the morning my friend asked me if I had gotten up in the night to prank him by poking him through his tent. I too had felt something nudging me through the tarp over my hammock that night. The only explanation we could come up with was a curious black bear. I'll never know but it still gives me goose bumps.

fully agree, if your gut says leave, LEAVE!!!!. I camped at a nice place in the mountains and I was the only one in camp, about 8 places but because it was early Winter, no one else was there. I decided the next day on the morning to take a little hike on the farm and explore the abandoned worker houses in the mountain, they always tell such wonderful tales and the last house on the furthest point was in between some "forest" or as we call it here "eucalyptus forest", very devoid of undergrowth due to the trees killing anything around it with it's oils. Strange sounds came from the forest, little cracks of twigs etc and I know for a fact, living and growing up between those forests, they do not do that. A branch falling and seeds falling has specific sounds however those was like something was out there. I immediately made myself known, loud and started walking away watching my back because as that area has leopards. I was not paying attention but on my path back I noticed tracks and they do not belong to dogs so they must be a big cat and this had smaller tracks with it. I was very lucky because I infringed on the area where this mother had a cub and that was a big NO NO. I watched my back and made a b-line for the camping site, once back it was all normal. Like this gentlemen said in his video, listen to nature, you will know because what I missed was the incredible silence that befell me at that moment in the forest and that is a clear sign of something not being OK. Thank you for sharing your video and man I wish I could do what you do, I live in a very dangerous part of my country and I have to drive very very far to go and do what you do so count yourself very lucky. Friends of mine who are a couple went camping with their dog one night in rural New Brunswick and when they got their campfire up and running they heard someone approaching. The man seemed strange but they were cordial and offered a beer. They then tried to say goodnight to the man but he seemed really mad about it but still left. Maybe 20 min later he came back with a machete and tried to attack them. Thank goodness the dog kept him at bay until they got to safety of the truck and the dog was unharmed. He was arrested and spent 6 years in jail for the attack. Wild.

I've never believed in spooky stuff, aliens, ghosts, etc.
However, I do believe in the nastiness of humans. Humans can be wonderful creatures, but they can also be dangerous and act in a vicious way towards a stranger for no reason.
My friend went on a camping and kyacking trip around 5 years ago. He was solo and didn't know the area he was staying in.
Like you , he'd heard noises earlier in the evening and ignored them.
At around 3am, he heard a noise outside his tent at his kyack.
It was 4 travellers who'd spotted his camp and had come to take his kyack. They violently attacked him and stole his kyack. He managed to run away. A benefit of being a club runner.
You did the correct thing to leave. It's best to be safe.

I could be seeing things or it could just be brush coupled with the angle changing, video artifacting, etc. Still glad you listened to your gut and got out of there.

This summer while wild camping, it was a beautiful clear night. I decided to go for a walk with my headlamp turned off. I started to record the night sky and I was talking about the night sky. I sent the video a friend on Discord.
I started getting that odd feeling that I wasn't alone, so I put my phone in my pocket and headed to my tent.
I got in my tent and I thought I could hear something, so I froze, laying there with my arm propping me up in an odd way... I then heard a man's voice. It was muffled... but the it stopped. It's nearly midnight and I am in the middle of nowhere, yet I could hear a man's voice for a bit... then there it was again! He was close, but I couldn't make out what he had said... and then silence... and then his voice again.
I decided it was time to pull out my phone and text my wife... that's when I realised the video message I had sent my friend was playing on loop in my pocket!
😂 me and my brother had a similar experience. We were camping in a national forest and found a nice spot with several trees to hang our hammocks from. One of the trees had a hollow at the base that went up a few feet where it turned and ended in a hole on the side of the tree about 6 ft up. Well my brother stuck his jbl Bluetooth speaker into the hollow tree as it amplified the volume. Well fast forward several hours later and a few cups of “mushroom “ tea. We started hearing noises and knowing we were the only people for miles around we were on edge and so needless to say we were tripping balls. When we finally realized where the sounds was coming from we had one of the best laughs in years. That tree in the oconee forest will forever be known as the talking tree 😂

Many years ago, my husband and I took our three small children camping once in a remote mountainous area, hoping for a quiet family adventure. For most of the day, it was perfect-like something out of a movie. We hiked, skipped rocks, played games, and really soaked in the peacefulness of being completely alone out there. That is, until around 3 p.m., when an unexpected pair came out of the forest: a man and his young son, about 11 years old. Oddly, they were both barefoot.
At first, they seemed friendly. We made small talk and were cordial, but something just felt… off. Despite our polite attempts to signal we wanted some family time, they wouldn’t leave. The man even picked up my husband's guitar and started playing, while his son settled into a card game with our kids as if they'd known each other for ages.
As dinner approached, we hinted that it was time for them to go, saying we only had enough food for our family. But the man was insistent, even offering to gather wood for our fire. Then, as it got darker, the boy asked, “Can we stay the night with y’all?” The dad chimed in, “We won’t be a bother, we don’t need to eat, we’re just enjoying the company.”
My husband, trying to keep things light but firm, told them it was probably best they head back before dark. That’s when things took a creepy turn. The man stood up, looked at us coldly, and said in a serious tone, “Fine, we were just being friendly. Sleep well.” Then he turned to his son, who suddenly looked at me with this strange, pleading expression and asked, “Will you be my momma?”
That sent chills down my spine. I tried to respond kindly, urging him to catch up with his dad. They walked off into the woods… but we could still hear them. For hours, it sounded like they were walking in circles just beyond the edge of our campsite.
By 10 p.m., we couldn’t shake the sense that something wasn’t right. We woke the kids, packed them into the car, and left everything-tent and all-behind. We drove down the mountain in silence, our hearts pounding. We came back the next day to retrieve our things, but I’ll never forget the unsettling feeling of that night or the strange pair who nearly made us question everything about the peacefulness we’d gone looking for.

@@campingwithjosh After the man and his son left, my daughters said the father gave them the creeps, and they were glad he was gone. In hindsight, we shouldn't have allowed him to stay as long as he did, but we were trying to balance being kind and cautious. It's been nearly 18 years ago, and the girls still bring up the scary man at the campsite.

Hi Josh, im Jim im 61 33:30 and i often solo wild camp, totally different than wild camping with my son whos 30 and his dog and my friend also early 30s. Ive also been wild camping for many years, usually in woodland and near ancient sites. Ive had a few strange and unexplained experiencies. Last autumn me and my friend were camping at a familiar ancient site in a woodland and we heard drumming. We left the camp to investigate and say hello. It was just before dark. As we walked out of the woods and up a track towards the ancient burial mound with standing stones the drum beat continued but as we arrived there was no one there. The silence was deafening, we spent a while looking in every direction, and there was no where for anyone to hide. Im glad i wasnt solo on that one. We went back to the camp and had food and beer and have often talked about it since.

I grew up in a haunted house and I think that the woods around it was also haunted. I don't believe in spirits but I do believe in things you shouldn't mess with. I used to wake up with three fingered scratches on me and they would burn like someone put cinnamon in a open wound. And as I've gotten older I've heard plenty of stories that were very similar to yours. When you encounter stuff like that it is best to leave. After moving out of my old house I haven't had much trouble since. I certainly sleep better. Glad you and your family are safe. 👍

I had a camp once in my fav spot in the woods , id hammocked there loads of times so quite , peaceful , i was reading a book i put it down as it was getting too dark to see , something was telling me i have to go pack up and leave some kind of energy i dont know what to call it , i knew i was not in any danger i was just being told to leave now !!! i packed up so quickly and walked in the dark with a torch through the wood then another wood , across fields all the time something an energy , force was following me , i had an over whelming feeling that it was making sure i was going home but making sure i was safe , i felt it stop but still there when i reach the edge of my housing estate , just making sure i was safe , i can not explain it , ive been back loads of times since and camped and felt very welcomed josh is right listen to yourself its no big deal going home x

Get an air horn. Its incredibly loud and will certainly shock and startle any person nearby that isn't expecting it and is trying to be stealthy. Its a big, massive audio disruption and loud noise is 1 of the humans natural fears.

Ha! That's funny. That's what we use in the French Quarter where I live if we are out after dark. Doesn't necessarily scare the muggers but the people opening their doors next to the sidewalk, cursing about the noise, makes them run.

I have a special air horn that's really, REALLY loud. It also fires lead projectiles at very high velocity when you turn it on.

My sister and I were camping at Gifford Pinchot National Forest at Cat Creek campground in the US. This was in early October.Our second night, we just made a pot of coffee. It was about 6:30 pm and just getting dark. We were the only campers there. A truck pulls in, slow rolls and pulls around a circle area behind some trees, and turns off everything. We look at eachother and immediately pour the coffee on the fire, break camp in record speed, all the while watching everything. We both had that bad gut instinct without saying it. Scariest thing we've been through camping for years up there.
Glad you trusted your instinct and made it back safe. It could’ve been nothing, but you can never be too careful.
Very recently here in the US, a young man was found dead in his tent and was suspected to be the victim of a bear attack. Turned out, another man stumbled upon his campsite and the victim invited him to join him at the campfire. They had a chat and a beer, but at some point, the lunatic just decided to knock the camper over the head with a piece of wood and hack him up with a screwdriver and an axe. It’s a rare case, but still, it proves there are some crazies out there and fear can be useful sometimes.

I was in the Army
We always set up camp with a perimeter around our base at knee height using parachute cord.
We had flares and thunder flashes that would be set off if the cord was disturbed , but maybe you could use tin cans that would attract your attention?

While camping deep in the wilderness, what truly unnerves me isn’t the thought of encountering wild animals or even the so-called "paranormal"-it’s people. People terrify me the most. Imagine this: you’re miles away from civilization, enveloped by endless trees and an almost oppressive silence. Then, out of nowhere, you see them. A person. No backpack, no gear-nothing to explain why they’re there. Just wandering aimlessly through your area, as if they belong to the forest itself. There’s something deeply wrong about it, something that makes the shadows seem darker and the silence deafening. It’s the kind of fear you don’t shake, even long after they’re gone… if they leave at all.

My family and i were in northern Ontario a cpl of years ago, we stumbled upon this great camp site and decided to stay for a week or so. By the second day my wife and i started hearing whispering, i did a scout around my camp with a kinetic projectile tool with zero findings. The place where we were camped happened to be a birch forest, I decided to practice some bushcraft/ building skills and cut down a few saplings for my projects. After i was done all of my bushcraft stuff my wife and i were sitting around and thats when the whispering started to get worse it got so bad as to the point where we could literally hear it inside of our camper. I went outside again and did another sweep of the entire area this time i could literally hear them following me but could not see anything or anyone or any sign of tracks or disruptions in the forest of someone there, we came to the conclusion that the woods were haunted and that we actually stumbled upon a section of "whispering woods" wife and i were kinda creeped out so we left. Its kinda funny because we thought we were lucky to find such a great spot but realized why nobody was there to begin with!
Josh, the most dangerous animal you will ever encounter out in the wild is other people. They can be real random. You wouldn't have been able to relax or settle down to sleep if you had stayed. The dogs barking proved something or someone was out there. I wouldn't have stayed either.

TL:DR - Lived in a house with 2 acres of woods, entire right side of property was spooky. Just something not right.. Everyone whoever came over felt uneasy like something was watching them.
I grew up in a house that was built in the 1800s, a cool house on a little over 2 acres that belonged to the church for 100+ years. After that it became a care home for children that were.. well.. violent or mentally insane. After that business closed my parents bought it fairly cheap because it needed a lot of work to restore it back into a home.
The house was set far back enough that it couldn't been seen from the road due to the amount of trees/bush. On the right side of the house there was an archway of trees coming all the way from the front fence, all the way to the back garden of the house.
My entire family were eating dinner maybe a week after we moved in, we were all chatting at the dinner table and then my sister mentioned that she always felt something on the right side of the property.. Table fell quiet. My Dad said him and my mum felt it too and they put it down to just it being new and it was spooky living in the woods when we were used to living in a bungalow in the city.
It wasn't just us that felt it though, the postman felt it, my friends felt it without me even mentioning it.. It was that strong of a presence I'd have to walk them down the driveway when it was time to leave because they were too scared to go alone, even during the day (we were 10/11 at the time). My mum/dads friends would ask them to see them to the car because they were spooked out by the feeling. It became a sort of fun game, we would invite people over and not tell them.. and just wait to see if they said anything about it.. 7/10 times they did.
One autumn/winter night, my mum came back from shopping with my sister. They parked the card along the side of the house which is where the front and side door were. They got out and popped the boot (trunk) and both saw something run past the front of the car into the right side of the property.. We all ran outside hearing the screams but they were manic.. ran inside. Dad calmed them down.. they explained they saw a tall figure run into the trees but said it didnt look like a man. They both swear to this day that they saw something.
One night I was taking a bath on that side of the house, the window was directly next to the archway. The windows had old wooden shutters on the inside that you could close with bars. My Dad said they were from the blitz so the house could be blacked out during bombing runs. I would always close them when in the bath.. One night I was bathing in there and from that right side of the house I heard a horse hooves hitting the ground.. heard almost like wheels on dirt.. but it continued for what felt like 20 minutes.. And then it just stopped.
Turns out that archway was where they used to bring in the horse and cart from the street, they would go down the archway and at the back out the house was an annex where my grandparents lived.. That annex used to be a horse stable.
In the 10-12 years we lived there so much happened that's unexplainable. I still don't know that I believe in ghosts as such but there was a lot there that made me believe there is something that we don't understand.

There was a basement, on the old house plans it was the entire length/width of the house but at some point it had been completely concreted in, only a small corridor remained.. My Dad noticed that whenever the door was open, our family dogs wouldn't go near it. He would call the dogs over with the door closed and then open it and they would run away as fast as they could.. Something ominous down there obviously.
I'd had things thrown at me, saw kitchen drawers open and stuff jump out.. Saw blinds twist open/closed by themselves..
The last year I lived there, I had a stereo system in my room.. it had been in there for 10+ years.. I barely ever used it since technology progressed and I had spotify, etc. If I did turn it on to listen to the radio, it would default to a local radio station.
Well, for a week straight, 7 whole days, at around 4pm, the radio would turn on at full volume, white noise, no radio station tuned in.. Just blasting white noise at max volume. It did it for 7 whole days and then stopped. I know no one was doing it because we were all together in the kitchen (we would all hang out in there as a family and talk/sit at the table drink tea, etc) at least 4 out of the 7 days it happened. I checked to see if there was a way to set a timer or program it and there was not..
Stories could go on and on.. Lot of weird shit

Me and a friend, both in seperate tarps, both heard footsteps right outside our shelters. Looked out, nobody there. Being two of us did make the difference though. You did right to bale out.

I was camping, Solo, up in Montana/USA, I had no bear spray, no gun, a tiny knife, a 200db Air Horn, headlight 450 lumens and it was raining with a thunderstorm up on a Ridge 9200ft elevation. It was around 1am when I set up camp. Pitch black and high wind, flashing lightning too.
This was mid summer 2013, my tent was a Taco Tarp wrap/Bivvy bag setup for high wind.
No one up there in Grizzly Bear country but me, I was wrapped up, hunkered down under a thick tree with many branches surrounding me.
A Bear came into my NO FIRE camp and could smell me out.
I saw something big and dark beyond my enclosure so I pulled out my Alaskan Cow Bell and shook it violently. It was super LOUD, the grunting Bear took off running away from me but came back 20 minutes later. I repeated the process and didn't see it again.
The next morning I saw the prints and it was a Black Bear by its toe claws.
I was up on that 25 mile range for only 1 night and the next day in a Hotel room.

Bears love fast food lol I had a very lucid dream that I died like that and could feel the pain after I woke, so I'm trying to stear clear;)

It's surprising how much noise just a squirrel can make, I was whittling a stick sat on a log and thought I heard a person running up behind me. Then turned around to see it skimming along the forest floor.
Armadillos do this to me all the time. I panic a mountain lion, or human is in the brush and then out pops a little armadillo. 🙈😂
My own rain jacket has spooked be before when it rubbed against itself while already thinking I heard stuff. 😅

old woman of the woods here…. most of my solo camps were car camping, but being a solo woman adventuring - always trust your instincts. always.
I just want to say that I'm happy you made this video because I have not come across anyone else who has spoken about this topic. Other videos show the calm and fun aspect of camping, but there's another side of it that is dangerous, especially if you're in unfamiliar surroundings/alone. I'm glad that you shared this, especially that you didn't try to make yourself the hero, and you kept it real.

I can remember a camp I did a year ago and it didn't feel right. Similar situation to yours, misty, rain, hearing thuds. I stuck it out for a while then around 23:00 it was pitch black and I heard a deep thud behind my tent. I got out of my tent instantly ice cold with fear, switched on my head torch and looked behind my tent and saw a very large silhouette in the clearing with 2 large green eyes. Honestly, I froze solid and stopped breathing for a short spell. I genuinely felt terrified. After a few seconds the silhouette moved slightly and groaned with a large puff of smoke from its mouth. Then when my sense came back to me I realised it was a Cow. The relief I felt was such that I felt 10 stone lighter after the my fear dissipated.
But I couldn't relax then, I kept hearing other thuds and twigs cracking around my camp and the strange fear came back. I packed up and headed straight home.

Anything about Camping is it so darn peaceful during the day and then it gets spooky at night it’s like a dichotomy so I don’t do it anymore. I’m 72. I travel 3000 miles with a friend on mopeds through Europe and that was amazing but anyway, happy trails. Nice to meet you. I’ll be watching
The only thing that makes camping scary is the people that patrol them. Trust your gut... Never go against it.

That dog wasn’t happy either... definitely good shout to leave. I really want to wild camp but being a single disabled woman ive never been brave enough, hopefully one day ill get the balls to do it. Would love some safety advice from others on here who have gone out. Thanks!
No getting around the fact we are more vunerable when alone so if you can, go out with a buddy or group. Makes all the difference if you are unsure about camping out by yourself. Ive been spooked a few times being alone and it's not nice even as a big hairy ugly dude lol! It doesnt happen often but here in the UK its just the few human weirdo's we have to be careful of.
You could start with simple daytime excursions in the spring. Go out during the day not too far from parking and pitch a tent and enjoy some time in nature for an hour. Pack up and next time add on making a fire or something.
I can’t do it either, but there are ways to get out in nature without all the stress that darkness/sleeping solo brings. That’s a little too vulnerable for me to want to do alone.
@suec3215 that's a really good idea, especially as I suffer with chronic pain would be a good way of having a rest etc. Will definitely come back and comment once I've been brave and gone on some adventures to let you know how it goes. Thanks for that suggestion.

I took my little grandson camping in a caravan park. We were at the scruffy end of the area and l also booked a caravan in case it got too scary or very wet. All bases covered, we had a great time and he learnt to put up and dismantle his own tent. Maybe you could camp out in a safe place until you have experience and confidence.
South african here. There is a place near my town with a beautiful waterfall surrounded by forest and clean water that runs from the mountain. Unfortunately with time it's become dangerous. Anyway 2 of my friends went fishing there and they kept hearing movement in the bushes behind them but Everytime they looked they didn't see anything. Then my friend decided he would wait a bit and suddenly turn around and as he did he saw a man duck down. They dropped their rods and called for the man to come out. He didn't. So he drew his firearm (licensed BTW) and told the guy to show himself but this guy took off. They knew there and then it was time to leave. It's really sad when u can't go to nice places anymore becuz of people. And yes if you have a bad feeling about a place best to be safe and leave.

This reminds me of my first time bike-packing. I was late to my destination on my first day, cycling with my gear on a dirt road in the bush, with little light left. A ute came along and pulled over, turned its lights off and the driver shrieked out the window. I ignored it and kept going, and then the ute turned to follow me. My heart pounded and I just kept pedalling, trying to keep my cool. I think it is important to remain assertive, even if you're feeling unsettled and planning to leave.
Predators look for weakness before they attack.
Fortunately, it was just a young larrikin, but I could have instead run into a mad man.
