  • all three of these foods are very popular. There's plenty of pet parents feeding them and they're very satisfied. but besides nice coat, firm stool, and liking the taste, which one is actually healthiest for your dog? How can a food promote good health anyway? Here is an in-depth evaluation of these foods, looking at which one is actually the
    healthiest.

      I really try to show people how to evaluate foods for themselves and not just simply say Feed this and Don’t Feed That. But I will say I feed Science Diet, based on what I know from 34 years working in veterinary nutrition. Of course a brand demonized on most z UA-cam videos.

      Go to UA-cam search for Veterinarian secret listen to some of his videos. He has some great ideas how to feed your dog how to look after your dog how to keep the vet bills down… there’s also a girl and I can’t remember her name but she talks about nutrition and games and things for your dogs and foods what to feed your dog, but not to feed your dog.. find a holistic veterinarian. My dog has had some problems, and I have gotten her on food that they have mentioned, supplements and other things that he has mentioned and they are helping her.

    Great presentation because some of us aren't savvy enough to put all of this together. I would have simply chosen Blue Buffalo because it said "adult maintenance " not realizing that it was equally as bad for 7 year old dogs. Really upsetting how pet food manufacturers get by with deceptive marketing. They could put all that money they spend on marketing into making quality dog food. Thank you for your time making these videos.

    Taste of the wild even markets all life stages as a great thing; they appeal to people with multiple dogs/cats of different ages. The consumer thinks they don't have to go through the headache of choosing a diet for every pet, but alas, they don't know that this could be truly detrimental.

    I truly appreciate your videos and the information provided. Can you please advise what YOU feel is the healthiest puppy food and healthiest adult dog food of any type? We have done our best to sift through the minutia and research, we have tried many types of dry kibble and also frozen raw over the years in an attempt to provide easily digestible and “ healthy”. You are so accurate about the marketing and the guilt. It is very disheartening that it is so difficult to figure out what the TRUTH really is when trying to give our pets the “best”. Thank you.

      Kelly, thanks for writing! I can only understand nutrition from how it has been taught to me by top board certified nutritionists over 34 years… and the results of that research and knowledge. First of all, puppy food is pretty easy. They are only puppies for a year and I really never found a puppy food that was deficient. Any reputable dry brand is fine. Science Duet and ProPlan are my go tos. Adult I would say the same thing. I see no benefit of raw. I just don’t. The arguments against dry kibble is all emotional and/ or philosophical. I only trust companies with a team of board certified nutritionists who have a track recited of success. Since I did vet nutrition I consider a company that can produce those diets can produce a diet for a healthy pet. It’s so sad but so simple! Provide optimal nutrients to promote health and reduce risk of disease. Most companies have no clue about that. It’s all a marketing game to look better than the rest. I’m glad you are enjoying my videos! I’m trying !

    Hello sir, im from Holland and I wanna switch to a barf raw diet for my Germand shepherd x Black wolf and my Tibatin mastiff. Im researching a lot about what food is best. So my question is could you make a video about a raw diet and what meat has the best amino acids.
    I see a lot off websites these days that promote barf food and theyre all byproducts that dont get consumed by us humans and I was wondering if theyre as healthy? I asume they are or is there maybe a trick in the sleeve where the byproducts / leftovers dont get tested on diseases?
    Thanks in advance!

    • @PetFoodPuzzleGuy
      @PetFoodPuzzleGuy  9 місяців тому

      I am not an expert on barf or raw diets, but I can tell you there is nothing wrong with by products. The problem is the quality of by products. It can range from high quality organ meat to pretty much junk. If you are buying the meat yourself, you know the quality. Now your only issue is finding a balanced diet from a real board certified vet nutritionist.

  • @kylasbibi

    This was a very interesting video. For me, what have been helpful would have been the range of mineral levels we should be looking for and if it matters for particular breeds of dog. I’m guess I’m asking, where do we find the guidelines you are using (ie: lower minerals means a higher quality of protein ingredients).
    Also does it matter that the meat has already been processed into meat meal? I’m asking because we know for humans, the more processed a food the worst it is for humans. Does that hold true for dogs as well. My apologies for asking so many questions. I really want to have a way to determine what is good for my pup.

    • @PetFoodPuzzleGuy
      @PetFoodPuzzleGuy  9 місяців тому +1

      The ranges in good texts books are in percentages and still quite wide a range. Every food I’ve looked at has always been good to extremely excessive, never too low.. but again if it says All Life Stage they have already told you they are excessive! That’s the easiest way! It does not matter if it is raw, cooked meat or cooked into a meal. Protein is protein. Vitamins are diminished in cooking but there should be a vitamin mineral supplement anyway. Everything you hear about meat meals being low quality is a flat out lie. The formulating of these diets is very different than human processed food, using horrible unhealthy stuff we all know. Pet food marketers try to describe kibble as over processed to sell their foods. All lies.

    I use Carna4 as a primary, Open Farm's wet and broth as a topper. I been looking into Spot & Tango unkibble but they have sweet potatoes as the 3rd/4th ingredients. What are your thoughts on potatoes and sweet potatoes in food ingredients?

    • @PetFoodPuzzleGuy
      @PetFoodPuzzleGuy  10 місяців тому

      I know of no reason to be concerned with either potato. Sweet potatoes are a bit higher in carbs but again, no concern to me.

    • @KarenTweedy-vd6fb
      @KarenTweedy-vd6fb 9 місяців тому

      Solanine. And what I consider to be excess carbs. I know the dose makes the poison. But I don’t see why a dog would need potatoes. As someone who thought I was feeding the best kibble to a rescue dog I got at age 2 (a well-marketed salmon and sweet potato kibble), I was devastated when he developed insulin dependent diabetes at age 10. I immediately switched him off of commercial kibble onto a homemade recipe that included a veterinarian-developed mix that delivered low glycemic nutrients in an amount calculated based on his weight/age/health conditions. It allowed me to get his weight normalized and according to my vet who always bragged on me, he stayed amazingly healthy until he passed at age 16 when most diabetic dogs only live for two years after diagnosis.
      I’m a little flummoxed by the mind-set that the quality of the nutrients doesn’t matter as long as they are measured as being there. What about the various different amino acid profiles etc?
      But then again I am a human nutrition nerd and ICU RN who has been 6 years Ketovore/carnivore myself with awesome results after a deep dive into all of the lies we have been sold for decades that actually opposes what the science and the anecdotal experiences reveal about what constitutes healthy food and is making humans sicker and sicker by the day. So I’m willing to consider opinion from someone who has been more imbedded in the industry.
      But I will never again buy the type of food that either caused or at least exacerbated my previous dog’s diabetes. So no potatoes or rice or grains for either me or my almost 1 year old dog. 😁 🐶And I’m off to hunt for the science on the matter. I’m also gonna check out the Carna4 brand you mentioned. Thanks!

    • @PetFoodPuzzleGuy
      @PetFoodPuzzleGuy  9 місяців тому

      @@KarenTweedy-vd6fb hey Karen, (my wife’s name) I can understand your position on carbs. In the human world there is a lot of good debate. Since dogs are omnivores like us there could be something to it. The board certified vet nutritionists I talk with are still not convinced. Time will tell. My wife and I are considering trying carnivore to see the results! Not sure I can do it! No bread or beer??? Your comment that the quality of the ingredient doesn’t matter, as long as it’s there is of course the big lie of the pet food industry and is why I started my UA-cam channel after retiring! The quality determines the nutrients delivered, and that’s the only thing that affects your pets health. Since you’re into all this for people, my main concern with carnivore is the impact it has on the micro biome in our gut. When I left Hills just last year they were discovering all kinds of benefits of the gut. I know a meat only diet will drastically change the bacteria in my gut and there is still very little peer reviewed studies yet. Great short term results are great but but are there unintended consequences? Gotta love science!

    Hi! Would you mind sharing your opinion on Smack dog food?

    • @PetFoodPuzzleGuy
      @PetFoodPuzzleGuy  9 місяців тому +1

      Checked out their website. Actually the first thing I noticed was the 5.5 lb bag for $96.00! Of course they feature lovely ingredients and beautiful pictures. Nutritionally, the guaranteed analysis shows 52% protein. There is no dog alive who needs that much protein! Absolutely not one. It also states it’s for All Life Stages so it’s puppy food and so is not optimal for adult or senior dogs. What’s really revealing is they claim life stage nutrition is just marketing, the same as the grain free myth. That’s absurd! Life stage nutrition has been accepted by nutritionists for decades. Grain free was simply marketing with no scientific basis. The calorie count is quite high at 480 kcals per cup, way too high for most normal activity dogs. You would feed so little I’m concerned the dog wouldn’t feel satisfied. So based on all that, this food just ain’t worth it!

    Free run chicken means they are not kept in cages, but are in a large barn or other structure. They usually do not have access to the outside. Hill's Adult Perfect Weight dog food says it is formulated. Several others say crafted. Does that mean taste tested? They all say no chicken by-product meal. But they all have meal. Seems to be a fine technical line.

    • @PetFoodPuzzleGuy
      @PetFoodPuzzleGuy  10 місяців тому +3

      I am all for more humane treatment of livestock. Absolutely!
      I’m not surprised Perfect Weight had no feeding trials. The diet is so close to its counterpart on the vet side, Metabolic, which had far more testing as a weight loss diet, that it was within the “family” so no trials needed. It’s the same with new flavors of the same diet. Now if you make a truly unique diet like vegan or crickets it would make sense to do feeding trials. But sadly probably 99% of foods are simply formulated these days. Crafted is not an AAFCO term but taste tested wouldn’t be included in AAFCO trials. No by products is just marketing BS. If they use organ meat it’s by products, whether still fresh meat or dried into a meal. It’s not really a fine technical line. Organ meat, which Americans don’t eat, gets labeled by products. Could be from human grade chickens or yucky junk. Meal is another issue. That simply means that meat source was cooked and dried into a powder. Again, could be high quality, could be junk! And I pray if you’ve been watching my videos you know how to tell!!!

      Staci, great question! First of all, the first 5 ingredients? Why hot the 6 or the first 3? The first 5 is a marketing trick because those are the ingredients that are manipulated on the ingredient panel. It’s a marketing tool, not a way to evaluate a food. No nutritionist Evers said Loom at the first 5 ingredients! The pet food marketers pushed it well. I care about all the ingredients because they deliver nutrients which will either help my pet or hurt them with harmful excesses. But as a consumer, they’ve convinced you to look at 5 ingredients they have purposely used to get you to buy, yet you have no idea of the nutrients provided. It’s all about looking good rather than being nutritious. I hope you’ll watch a few more of my videos as I explain it all in detail in many of them. And please ask more questions!

    FYI, Please, be careful when you mention Purina. Purina has poisoned hundreds of thousands of dogs and killed many thousands of dogs from contaminated food. They also produce chicken feed and were possibly culpable for the recent egg crisis.
    When you mention Purina and fail to mention their horrible record, you lose credibility.
    Maybe just don't mention Purina.

      Well, I am working on a video comparing Purina’s dry cat food. I am not a fan of Purina because they make some really good foods but also others that aren’t. Should be that inconsistent! After 34 years in the business I am not aware of them poisoning hundreds of thousands of animals. My main purpose is to help pet parent understand pet food marketing and how to evaluate a diet. I try to stay out of the politics.

    Hello, I just found your video as I was looking for the best food for my soon-to-be 7 year-old American Cocker Spaniel. I am so frustrated and confused about all the marketing videos out on UA-cam and the "gazillion" brands and types of dog food: grain-free, grain-inclusive, freeze-dried, raw, baked, etc., etc.. My Cocker used to be on Royal Canin Breed Specific Cocker Spaniel dry food. However, since the famous pandemic, I cannot find this food anywhere anymore. Since then, I have been trying different brands like: Proplan, Open farm, and now, Petcuran Go-Solution. The RC Breed Specific had 23% protein, so I have been trying to stay in the 22 - 28% range for my Cocker and I also stay with the grain inclusive type of food. I have found your video very informative and quite interesting and I am glad I found you. I will check out your other videos. In the meantime, is there a particular brand of food that you would be inclined to give to a Cocker Spaniel who is going to be 7 years old in October? It is really difficult and time consuming for us, concerned pet parents who only want to give the best to our furry babies, to find the ideal brand of food. Oh, did I mention that I also have a cat, which is another saga all on its own to try to find the best possible food! So, thank you for doing these videos and telling it like it is. I am sure I will learn a lot from you! Cheers from Canada!🐶

      Welcome! I can only share my knowledge and experience over the last three decades. Don’t let it drive you crazy! Most if it is just marketers and snake oil salesmen trying to sell you something. They are always looking for ways to say they’re different and better. I’m a big Science Diet fan since I know the company so we’ll and always compare nutrients, which is all that matters. At seven, the age related disease risk starts to increase so the super high protein boutique foods are not appropriate. Home cooking is great if you have a well balanced recipe and stick to it. Raw has absolutely no benefit over cooked but don’t tell the raw fans that! Lol! Don’t feed anything that says For All Life stages! My videos explain. Keep your pup at a healthy weight and get them exercising and that’s even more important than the food! So relax and go for a walk!

    have almost every brand bags of food. super frustered as cannot find what you are talking about on any bag.

      @PetFoodPuzzleGuy  9 місяців тому

      So sorry for the confusion. You won’t find any of it on the bag! Usually not on the websites either. They don’t talk nutrition with you, just marketing! The bag will tell you if it is an All Life Stage food. That’s at least easy. Don’t feed that food to an adult or senior because it’s puppy food! I call the companies to get the real info. And some of them still won’t tell you!

      Isabel, yes and no. It can be the best if you are following a recipe that delivers optimal nutrient levels. That’s the important part. Even proponents of home cooking admit probably more than half do it wrong. You can have the best of both worlds, quality ingredients and optimal nutrients, but you can’t have both if you’re just winging it.

    Not a fan of the background music. Pedigree dog food is better than the foods in this video.

      Thanks for the feedback. I don’t like the background music either but most videos have it. Next one will be silent! I need to do Pedigree.
