A great gospel song sung by a legendary vocal group. J.D. Sumner was one of the greatest bass vocalists in history. I hope he's strolling in heaven with the Lord.
Of all the wonderful renditions of this song, NO ONE ever did it better than the Stamps Quartet with J.D. Sumner. And their new replacement for their original tenor is excellent, more than worthy of the task. This was Elvis' favorite gospel song, and he requested that they sing it at his funeral... they did. A fitting tribute to a great man.
Bill Baize was by far the greatest tenor who sang with the Stamps. Steve Warren (shown in this video) is certainly very good, but Bill Baize brought a special dignity and spirit to stage. If I were to own a quartet, Bill Baize would be my choice for tenor, followed closely by former member of the Imperials, Jim Murray.
Well, to be honest this is not as good as the version they did live with Elvis, different personnel and later in the careers of Enoch and JD, but it's nice nonetheless!!!
Still listening in 2024… these fellas are a joy to listen to
Rick Strickland - tenor
Ed Enoch - lead (married JD Sumner's daughter Shirley)
Ed Hill - baritone
J. D. Sumner - bass
C. J. Almgren - piano
