J.D. Sumner and the Stamps backed up Elvis for several years, I think starting around ‘70 or ‘71. J.D. personally was one of Elvis’s best friends and also held the Guinness World Record for lowest bass voice for several years and in my opinion, THE best bass singer who ever lived.
These gentlemen sing as well as any opera singers ever have. They along with The Florida Boys, Oak Ridge Boys, and the Jordannaires are flawless and unmatchable. God bless.
JD Sumner!!! He and his quartet sang with Elvis Presley all the time. If Elvis had it his way he would have had them as his back up singers all the time instead of them switching out with the Jordanaires.
When I was growing up our church and my grandparents' churches all used the same type of boards on the front wall, identifying hymns to sing and the number of people present during Sunday School and last week's attendance. Brought back beautiful memories to see those in this video.
so deep , so sober in delivery , so smooth / he looks and sounds like he enjoys it .. he's showy and yet reverent / i have many "favorite" musicians and JDS is one of 'em .. looking forward to that Great Day when i meet them over yon / but so much more when i fall on my knees before His thron e!

I know I am late to the party, but you need to get to town more often!!!! Check out Bill Gaithers "Homecoming" videos starting at about 1992??? to get an introduction to JD. Of course he was singing in national Gospel Quartets long before then, probably from at least as far back as the '50's maybe even the '40's. JD and the Stamps toured with Elvis until Elvis' death. JD died around 1998. Of course I have been a gospel quartet fan most of my life , now 75 yrs old. Sorry if I have bored you!
herecalico never met JD but i sang in a gospel group in High School and had the priviledge of knowing James Blackwood when he and his brother and James son Jimmy Jr sang with the Blackwood Brothers. They visited our home in South Texas many 5imes when they were in the area. Thrill of my life knowing these guys.
@@billkelly7351 wow that is cool. I got to see the current Blackwood Brothers group a few months back, led by Billy Blackwood. His brother Jimmy has retired from the road.
@@billkelly7351 I am wondering if you were at my parents concerts? My dad was Jack Autry, both my parents were music promoters and held concerts all over Texas. We promoted J.D. And the Stamps, Blackwood bros., Duane Allen and The Oak Ridge Boys and 100's of others.

Neither one. In 1962 Frank Stamps sold the Stamps Quartet to the Blackwood Brothers. The Stamps weren't doing too well so in 1965 JD Sumner convinced James Blackwood that he should trade places with John Hall. JD headed up "JD Sumner and the Stamps Quartet" and Hall sang bass with the Blackwood Brothers. JD reorganized the group and the one who you thought was James Blackwood was actually his son, Jimmy Blackwood who sang baritone with the Stamps. Jimmy later took over the Backwood Brothers after his dad James retired.
JD is, and will always, remain as one of my favourite bass singers.
What can anyone one say? That bass voice is just amazing.
J. D. Sumner
The movie was released in October of 1966 so it's almost a certainty that it was filmed in 1966.
JD was amazing. Even Elvis loved him. Never heard such fantastic bass as on "Way Down".
J.D. sang hymns with Elvis. I think he was in his group. Beautiful bass voice.

Yes he sang why me lord with Elvis

Didn’t care that much for the Florida boys !! lol
Oh, this gave me goosebumps!! Now THAT's what I call good Christian music! Beautiful. :-D
Met this guy at my dads nightclub in denver. His deep base blew out several woofers during the song way on down

And yes his deep bass singing voice was known to doing that. He is actually in the Guinness book of world records for the deepest bass voice ever.
@@lauravaco3728 are you sure?😊. Check again. It's Tim Storms
@@gmdsound6730 yes but that record by Tim Storms was set after JD died

JD is in Guiness Book fir lowest or deepest base voice
Also has it FOR lowest base note too
JD and the Stamps had their best decade in the 1960s and early 1970s

Yes he is, my daddy (rip) idolized him. Thank goodness for UA-cam.
Apparently you've never heard of William Bobo of The Dixie Hummingbirds and Isaac Freeman of The Fairfield Four! lol
Debbie Turner Altman he was my 3rd cousin I never had the pleasure of meeting him.
Andre Kilpatrick neither of them was in J.D.'s league. London Paris on the Other hand was.
That's right he the best
The world needs to return to God. Our troubles would dissipate and we would have peace.
YES, JD is still my favorite bass singer
JD Sumners is wonderful and amazing!!! I love your songs and all of Stamps quartet!!! Thank-you!!! 💖💗❤️💜💙💚💃🕊️🥗🌯🦞♥️🧥👚🎤🗿🌟🌟☀️.

Yes
Not often you see them do playback.
Yes, I noticed that there's no microphones and this is before the days of lapel mikes.
What year was this?
@@renoreigns4750 1963 or 1964, I believe.

@@ImapatriotUSA thanks for refreshing my memory. Jimmy was who I saw in the 80’s.
When was this song recorded
64 or 65.

anyone know how Red Foley and JD got along? Asking for my mute friend (he can't read either)
L.C Hensley

Anybody know what year this is? I’m guessing 50s?
1964 I think
What year was this recorded?
Ben Wright
not sure of the year but it was from sing a song for heaven's sake
1954
In 1954 there wasn´t color video camera technology available
1966, actually.
Mountassir Yes there was. Ever hear of “Technicolor”?
Isee.donnie.sumner.jd. ,s.nephew.
come erano giovani
I thought JD Sumner hated organs.
This is soprano for JD.🤣
Who are the other3 Men ???
I only know two of those three and that would be James Blackwood beside JD and beside James would be Donnie Sumner which is JD's neffue.
Don't know the guy beside Donnie though.
Sopranos.🤣
JD appears to be significantly older than the other 3 singers, and the little skinny guy up front seems scared to be there..
