Mama Doris Arkers will always be remembered for these powerful songs
Helping her in 1960, was an experience I never forgot. Billy Preston was only twelve years old, when he began to play the piano and organ for the choir.
I spent the sabbath with my Lord and then the Spirit begged me to find this song and this version does my soul great
Doris is black on the inside and white on the outside. What a voice, what a performance, what a woman!
I had the privilege of singing this and other songs under her direction when I was a student at Jim Bakker's Heritage School of Evangelism and Communication. She was one of the toughest directors I have ever sung under, but she was also the best. What a blessing to have known her for this brief period. I look forward to singing with her in Heaven.
I have seen her on a few of the Gaither series and have been wondering who she is!! I have never met her but adore her!! Figured she was a teacher!!! :)!!

That second verse did it for me. Because it was saying to the world, in a spirit of defiance, regardless of what the world does I'm going to walk with Jesus ALL the way.
Though she got to heaven in 1995, her singing and playing is so impressive and touching our minds.

What a beauty of a hymn. What a solemnity that makes me rise to heaven and fills my heart with reverence and adoration for the Lord.
We sang this song in the Auckand town hall. NZ in 1981. My first time as a New believer stepping into the Anointing, that flooded me from head to toe. I had no understanding,but sobbed my heart out. Such was the Presence, Beauty & Power of Holy Spirit. The Most Beautiful song. Nothing is possible without The Holy Spirit. How I Love, Love, Love Him. Thank you Doris Ackers.🥰🥰🥰

This is a great song. But that little used verse is one of the best things I’ve ever heard and I will NEVER use it as a hymn or choral anthem without that verse
That because this verse actually quotes God's Word in John 1:16 and Colossians 2:9-10a, and the Holy Spirit brought these powerful words to touch everyone's soul back to Him. Praise the King Jesus.

Nobody does the song like dorsakers praise God she is so uplifting and with the Lord she is I listen to it and watch the video from the gaithers when she did the new verse to the song or the other verse I should say and it gives me cold chills listening to it and brings tears to my eyes because there is such a sweet spirit in this world when we know Jesus

This pianist was the author of this and many songs that we sing both in the black and white churches. Her mother was black and her father was "white". Oh well. Such is life.

This was the first video that I got to be a part of. Obviously edited. Bill had started to play the song and Doris told him to get out of the way. She said he didn't have any rhythm! We laughed about 5 minutes. There are alot of things that ended up on the cutting room floor that were just priceless.

What a classic song written by one of the consummate composers/artists in gospel music. She is one of my all time favorites. I remember my church choir singing this song (both verses) in 1973. Doris Akers is someone most of us had never heard of, but she inspired so many. The Gospel Award winning Composer if the Year in 1961 and 1962 (the year she penned this song), the Smithsonian called her "the foremost black gospel songwriter in the United States" - don't let the red hair and pale skin fool you, she was African-American. Inducted into the Gospel Hall of Fame in 2001 and the Southern Gospel Hall of Fame in 2011, she was as dedicated to our Lord as anyone. She passed in 1995 at the age of 72 after a 50 year career. We are blessed she walked among us.

There's a lot of great Doris Akers material here on UA-cam, especially during her time with the Sky Pilot Choir. My personal favorite is an appearance with the Imperials circa 1966. The Imperials then were Jake Hess as lead, Jim Murray as tenor, Gary McSpadden as baritone and Armond Morales as bass. Wonderful old-time Gospel! I highly recommend it.
She probably was mixed...but she definitely was one of a kind.

I did not know Doris Akers was an African-American..she was very fair-skinned..racial backgrounds are unimportant to me but .I bring up this point because this song transcends race..I have worked as Music Director in many churches in many denominations..this song is well-known in all churches, white, black, mixed. How wonderful that she shares this other verse, of which I knew nothing, but I will sing it now as often as I can.

I wrote Sweet Holy Spirit in August of 1972. My Nazarene Church was having a revival meeting and this song 🎵 was written at its conclusion. The song was originally written in Flemish and translated into English by my mother.
CORRECTION !!! This song was composed by the great Doris Akers/ Copyright 1962, during a choir rehersal with The Sky Pilot Choir, while they were getting ready to go into the worship service. The presence of the Holy Spirit was so strong (Sweet, Sweet Spirit) in the rehersal, the choir almost didn't make it into the worship service.
