There’s a reason the History Channel has produced hundreds of documentaries about Hitler but only a few about Dwight D. Eisenhower. Bad guys (and gals) are eternally fascinating. Behind the Bastards dives in past the Cliffs Notes of the worst humans in history and exposes the bizarre realities of their lives. Listeners will learn about the young adult novels that helped Hitler form his monstrous ideology, the founder of Blackwater’s insane quest to build his own Air Force, the bizarre lives of the sons and daughters of dictators and Saddam Hussein’s side career as a trashy romance novelist.
New episodes twice a week on iHeartRadio.

"Now that measles is rare, we don't need to vaccinate" has the same energy as "Now that racism is over, we don't need the VRA anymore"

I was in elementary school in liberal Seattle, WA in the 1980s. My friend and I both had chicken pox at the same time, and so we had play dates while we missed school. Good memories.

as someone who grew up in the UK in the 90s, I cannot stress enough how incredibly mainstream Wakefield was here. discussions of the safety of MMR were regularly on TV for about a decade after his study.

I'm so glad my parents never listened to his nonsense

A good Doctor on this sort of thing is Dr Richard Pan, a California pediatrician that went into politics, and one of his big pieces of legislation was eliminating the “personal belief” exemption from vaccination requirements.

Boy, this one was ironically timed. Covid-19 hit the US almost exactly one year after it originally aired.

My mom hated the word fart and when I was growing up she made us say "boofer" instead. That feels way less 'what the fuck?' now.

The initial infection of Varicella (a herpesvirus whose initial infection is known as chickenpox) may be often mild but as you never fully get rid of the virus and 1/3 of infected get flare ups known as shingles which will cause nerve damage and in personal experience hurt worse than breaking a bone. For most people that will be when they are older but for me it was in my 20s and for my cousin it was in her 30s. The nerve damage left her with chronic pain. For one of my god parents who had a flare up in his 60s it damaged facial nerves resulting in Bell’s Palsy where one side of his face is paralyzed. So far neither of my flare ups have left serious damage but they hurt comparable to breaking a bone. So yeah 1/3 of the people who get chickenpox get nerve damage

My sister got these welts on her neck last weekend during a trip. This morning she went to urgent care, and found out it's shingles. 😟

On the Chicken-pox party thing, chicken pox tends to be much worse if you catch it as an adult than if you catch it as a child. The logic was better to skin your knee than lose the leg layer on.

"Pox parties" were a part of our culture as late as the 90s, for sure, but a vaccine is still a safer way to immunize your child than to infect them with the full blown disease.

Also if you have multiple kids there's a logic of well they only get once so now that one has lets get this over with now

It made sense before we knew that shingles for adults who formerly had chicken pox as kids was a thing. Now it's officially a terrible idea. Vaccinate your kids.

Sure, or you know, get the vaccine instead of risking a bad case for your child

It would be awesome if he got Dr Mike on an episode with Billy Wayne Davis. Dr Mike is a more handsome version of Dr Oz, with NONE of the crazy. Even tried to get a show once but said no because he didn't want remotely any association with "supplements" and stuff.

It is always important to remember that to become a Doctor you only need a C-
