Same here. My absolute favorite Indy film. Kicking it off with "Anything Goes" is perfection! (And now that Ke Huy Quan is back to acting, they really need to make a Short Round movie.)
It's always been my favorite Indiana Jones. Although my girlfriend is from India and has given a hundred reasons why the movie is just historically/culturally wrong..... Even she understands why I love the movie so much
I relisten to all of your Tarantino episodes over and over and over again. Brilliant conversations with (in my opinion) the most brilliant and insightful director of the 21st century.
Without a doubt one of the best podcasts with Tarantino I have listened to in the past five years. I absolutely love listening to talk about other films. It’s like spending an evening with a good friend. Thank you so very much
Huge QT fan, but I also love Roger Avery, so I’ve been really thankful for the Video Archives podcast. This is really cool that you had them on Reel Blend to promote. Also, there needs to be Blu-ray releases of Killing Zoe (1993) and The Rules of Attraction (2002) ASAP!
This is such a great episode. Thank you for bringing up Jackie, definitely wanted to hear him talk about my favorite film after all these years. It doesn't get enough love.
That honestly was better than his temple of doom comments for me, and I love that he loves temple of doom! I like Crystal skull, it’s nnnooo where near as bad as people say it is, it’s a good and fun Indy adventure in a 50s b-movie style, still probably the worst of the 4 Indy flicks sure, I don’t think Spielberg was going into to CS trying to out do raiders. In the end, all film is subjective, and I respect Tarantino’s Indiana Jones thoughts and opinions. Can’t wait for Indy 5!!
Agreed. I love Temple of Doom. Raiders of the Lost Ark is a perfect movie and can’t be topped but Temple has balls more than most movies today. I always have a blast watching it.
As a Filipino, I wanna thank you Quentin and Roger for mentioning Canada giving a shot at a Filipino action film when theaters are filled up with blockbuster movies. I’m from the Philippines and I’m a massive reelblend fan and a massive cinephile. I’m 19 right now so growing up, the success of marvel coincided with my childhood and made me think this is what Hollywood is. But I always wondered why the Oscar’s never give superhero films any contention apart from the dark knight and black panther. So that made me curious about what Hollywood really is. I was stuck in lockdown and the film that changed my life was Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood. It made me go through what an actor and a stunt double journey is around that era and a famous actress married to a director looked like. It made me watch films of Quentin, Brad , Leo and Margot. Quentin’s fantastic filmography definitely one of my favorite directors ever And now, Brad Pitt is my favorite actor ever. His work with Fincher, Tarantino and movies like snatch Jesse James moneyball and so much more made me love this guy and his whole filmography. Leo’s films are so so good and I think if it wasn’t for Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker I would’ve had him win best actor in 2020. And Margot being arguably the biggest a list female actor right now. So I just wanted to say that I’m a massive movie fan ever since theaters went back up I watch every movie at least twice. it was great hearing roger do a shoutout for a Filipino movie because, here’s where Philippine cinema is at right now and I’m sure you will be interested to hear this: all cinemas play like cinemas do in the Us without any Filipino films the whole year round until Dec.25- Jan.8 which plays Filipino films exclusively with 0 Hollywood films. So I’m kinda concerned with my country’s cinema status and also there’s no genre filmmaking in my country, the biggest hits are rom coms. It actually caused controversy when we were the last country to have Spider-Man No way home play because it was out around Dec.17 in the US but since the theatrical release of the Filipino films was Dec.25-Jan.8 we had to watch no way home for the first time at Jan.8 which made people boycott the Filipino films and I had to delete all social media platforms to avoid spoilers haha. Anyways thank you reelblend for giving your listeners a chance to learn about filmmaking whether that’s Kevin with his filmmaking techniques and aspect ratio’s or Jake with his takes (pun intended ) andcharacter and story analysis. And Sean’s love for the mcu and Gabe’s amazing work behind the scenes. Right now I sort of have a very small role in a Filipino film that is in a Hollywood production that I could hopefully can share to you guys when I get the chance. Thanks guys and congrats on Tarantino Vol.4. Dunkirk!
This podcast right here was ten times better than his Two bears one cave interview i literally just finished..wow he is so comfortable around you,you must've had a blast!!! Great pod man ty Tarantino is legit the best filmmaker of my time I'm 35 and when i first watched Pulp Fiction on vhs it changed how i view life let alone cinema. 👏👏👏
Agree with Quentin about Temple of Doom. It's my fav Indy movie. It's just so hardcore and out there. So much crazy stuff that wouldn't be put into a mainstream studio blockbuster today like child slaves and a heart being taken out of a person lol
I did not listen to the podcast yet but YES. Temple Of Doom is amazing because it is an adventure without family members involved, without "true love" involved, without "bigger than life religious artefacts" to find, etc. It focuses on Indy at a moment when he turns from someone who is all about "fortune and glory" to someone who is simply a good man wanting to do what's right. It is a package of a non-stop adventure action movie with some comedy, with some horror moments. Temple Of Doom is EVERYTHING and Indiana Jones movie needs to be. Now... I still would say Raiders is the better movie from a cinematographic point of view and I can understand people prefering Crusade because the duo Ford/ Connery is great. But Temple Of Doom is, for me, the definition of what Indiana Jones IS.
Same here. My absolute favorite Indy film. Kicking it off with "Anything Goes" is perfection! (And now that Ke Huy Quan is back to acting, they really need to make a Short Round movie.)
Wow I’m so excited to watch this! Before that I’ll guess his pick is Taxi Driver! As he said it’s the greatest indie film ever made! Amazing amazing job guys in advance!!
i would not be suprised that tarantino contact Avary because he need him for his 10th movie, lets be honest here, without Avary tarantino is average director, but when working together something magical happens , something like pulp fiction for which Avary also win a oscar btw.., and Tarantino hate this , but he needs Avary for final masterpiece....p.s. Avary is criminaly underrated.
Since I produced DEADLOCK, AMERICAN SIEGE, BREACH, GASOLINE ALLEY, WHITE ELEPHANT, and A DAY TO DIE this made my day. We know what these films are…as the physical producers of those films and being that we are building a studio and producing our own content now like a massive remake of HIGH NOON we are so happy a guy like Quentin can see the hard work and effort that our team put into making the best film we can with the bullshit limited resources the EPs give us. You guys are great…I love your show and how y’all talk through cinema as a fan just not a snobby ass critic.
Tarantino LOVES movies. Most people USE movies to brand themselves. Tarantino respects movies, all kinds, but tells you his opinion, good, bad, or indifferent. I don’t always agree with him, but he’s got it right in his attitude about film.
Just heard bout this podcast 1 min ago. ..I'm all in in UK...QT is a genius dad now so his next few movies gona be epic === think he should re make there here !
As someone who loves movies so so much but cant often go to the theater because of location, health, income, etc. I am so grateful that in some instances I dont have to wait long to see the films I so badly wish I could go see finally on streaming or rental, so I hope film primarily is available after the theater within a month or 2. I'm sure people who have an easier time paying for tickets and driving wherever theyd like dont even think about that though therefore they dont mind or even prefer the wait time to come to rental/streaming
5:18 so weird, I randomly picked up that Hindenburg dvd recently. I had never heard of it but apparently Quentin likes it. I must be doing something right!
Red Dawn On August 10, 1984, the action thriller Red Dawn, starring Patrick Swayze, opens in theaters as the first movie to be released with a PG-13 rating.
Great interview guys... good to hear from Roger Avary. Does anybody know where i can read the Once upon a time in Hollywood script (not the book) there are so many QT scripts out there but i can't find that one.
It hasn’t been published due to what happened with the Hateful 8. QT says he won’t publish anymore of his screenplays. However, Josh Goldsmith has written an exposé on the screenplay as he was one of the only people to get a chance to read the actual script, even though he wasn’t apart of the film. According to him, the only thing that is different is that there’s a bunch more scenes after the spawn ranch set piece leading up to Rick making movies in Italy. That’s about it, really
I spent 40 years of my life justifying to people and trying to explain why Temple is the greatest Indiana film of all time. And now, I can just relax and sit back because Quentin Tarantino has cogently explained it for all time. Instead of giving my explanation I can just say just take Tarantino’s word for it. I don’t know why but every time I begin this argument with someone they forgot that the boulder scene is the opening of TOD. Their brain for some reason attributes it to Raiders.
I pulled up Quentin's IMDB page while you guys were doing the interview and just in the time since recording "Hateful Eight" has changed to "From Dusk Till Dawn". So weird and random.
The new Video Archives Podcast with Quentin and Roger (and Roger's daughter Gala) is absolutely fantastic! Only two episodes in and it's already the best podcast about movies out there.
Lucas and THX are genius. Jaws is brilliant and might possibly be the goat of all films. Top Gun Maverick is pure cinema fucking power. Jackie Brown is a masterpiece. QT and RA are legends. And this pod fucking rules.
I bet $100 usd and 5 euros that none of these dudes ever saw "thick as thieves" with michael jai white, a baldwin, andre baugher, and 10 others. Greatest crime comedy.
Quentin should either make a Cliff Booth sequel to Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, set in the 70s, with him getting in various scrapes. Or 40 Lashes Less One, except it's a trilogy! (Just count it as one film) Or a 70s set film noir style cop/buddy movie starring Brad Pitt and Samuel L Jackson as a detective duo exploring the Los Angeles underbelly. Or just make all three!
@@sij809 Yeah I understand his reasons, I do wonder if he couldnt just keep making them until he feels like he's made a below par film, then quit. But I guess he'd hate the idea his last film would be a lesser film. Then again that could happen anyway. His 10th might not be that good (however unlikely that is). I think he said Once Upon A Time In Hollywood was his last big epic film, and his 10th one would be something smaller. That might rule out a few things. I think he did mention that if he made a 70s film it would be a detective crime style film. I'd love to see that. And he said he'd loved being able to use more modern music in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, so maybe it will be something set in more recent times. Who knows, guess were lucky for all the films he has made, such an entertaining back catalogue of films.
The real IMDb game is, when you think of an actor, director, etc. that you want to look up, try to get to them from the IMDb home page without typing, i.e., only clicking. This means you need to find a path to that person from whatever is on the home page. A true test of your movie knowledge !
QT: "Jaws is best movie not best film but best movie of all time" What is difference movie and film? It's not a same thing? :) Someone explane to that?
Think of marvel stuff as your ‘movies’. Think he is essentially saying that film is more high brow and more thought out, whereas movies are purely about entertaining the masses. That’s my best guess anyway. I thought at first he meant Jaws wasn’t shot on film but according to Google it was.
@@HLakin98 I think he meant; "Films" is festival cinema, "movies" is box office cinema. So Spielberg's Jaws is still the best box office movie ever." So if the Matrix Series or Gotfather or Psyhco is a movie, Jaws isn't the best movie ever. I think Tarantino is wrong about this. Movie or film cinema is the cinema and the hardest thing to do in cinema is to make art movies + box office movies such as Matrix Series, Godfater, Citizen Kane, Pulp Fiction, Goodfellas, Casino, Taxi Driver, The Good The Bad The Ugly, Psycho, Titanic, Terminator 2. I mean, it's both critically acclaimed, general audience acclaim, and box office hits plus rewards. That's very difficult to do. This is real art... So; Chaplin, Welles, Hitchcock, Scorsese, Tarantino, Copolla, Spielberg, Cameron, O. Stone, Leone, W. Allen, B. Wilder etc. are real artist real auteur of cinema.
Quentin Tarantino is hands down the most entertaining interview subject out there. The signature ‘alright’ after ever third sentence. Amazing
This is quite possibly the nerdiest cinephile episode with a legendary director and I am ALL for it
That’s what we do!
Nah the one Quentin did with Edgar Wright for Empire magazine was the nerdiest! A whopping 3 hrs long Podcast of them talking about old movies!
Thanks for telling us you’re for it. Nobody gives a shit.
There is something beautiful how Tarantino really likes these guys, and how much they appreciate it.
Hearing Tarantino say he's pro-Temple of Doom gives me a deep sense of validation after defending it for years.

A mystery science theater approach to a broader line of topics......but somehow always goes back to the pocket of film.
Roger is from my hometown.
I have a deep comment, a question, That should reach Tarantino, and I think this would be the forum to do so…
“How would I DM you?”
You need to film this interview, one camera would do. Please.
The real IMDb game is, when you think of an actor, director, etc. that you want to look up, try to get to them from the IMDb home page without typing, i.e., only clicking. This means you need to find a path to that person from whatever is on the home page. A true test of your movie knowledge !
Love that idea

The Last Crusade is the best one.
