Managing hive build up- Opening up the brood nest & dealing with a failed queen

  • In this video I discuss early spring buildup hive manipulations.
    This time of year I’m looking to open up the brood nest by removing honey frames and replace them with empty drawn comb. As well as, adding deeps where more room is needed.
    When adding a deep I like to add a frame or two of foundation in with the drawn combs. Also drone frames for select colonies.
    I feed the colonies that get a box to help them get a jump on cleaning up the older combs.
    I happened to find a drone laying queen in one side of a resource colony during this video and deal with that as well.
    Leave any questions for me in the comments, thanks for watching!

    Good video and have good information on your hives but if you could get the camera closer to what you are doing so we can see it instead of waiting for you to bring a frame over to the camera if you could set it up on the hive next to the one you are working on and point down into the one you are working on like most of the other beekeepers do it would sure help us . Thanks keep your video’s coming. Thanks

    Great job Gus 👍 that's exactly what I was asking about on the resource hives. That is management. Sometimes you just have to take immediate action. Thanks man 👍

    I’ve really enjoyed watching your videos thus far! I’m about 90 minutes southeast of Memphis, so our conditions are similar. One question, do you mix your own feed or buy premixed? We’ve had trouble sourcing syrup for a while now. Thanks for the work you’re putting into the videos!

      @@gusmitchellcranesnesthoney6529 would that happen to be Sugar Services? At one time my understanding was that they had decided to only sell in tanker truck quantities, which is far more than we could use. A couple of totes at a time would be more in line with our needs. Mixing it up sure gets old!

    Great content, love your videos and your set up. Thanks. I am a sideliner about an hour south east of tupelo, ms near i-22 in nw alabama. Do you have any experience with a maxant honey pump? I have a brand new one which i will use this summer. Does it need cleaned out or primed prior to use? How do you clean out the pump? Thank you.

    • @gusmitchellcranesnesthoney6529
      @gusmitchellcranesnesthoney6529  2 роки тому +2

      Yes, I have a maxant Honey pump. It’s important to not let your cappings get melted and sucked into your pump. This happens if you let your clarifier go down to far. If you do this you’ll get wax buildup on all your gears inside your pump. It’s easy to take apart use a heat gun and a scraper and get it cleaned up and it should pump fine

    regarding the box u pinched the poor queen from, did the bottom deep have a divider and you had a nuc on each half of the deep with separate queens?

  • @paris3200
    @paris3200 2 роки тому +1

    If you could go into the "why" a little more it would be appreciated. What did you see that made you add the second deeps? What made you pull that honey frame out of the colony?

    • @gusmitchellcranesnesthoney6529
      @gusmitchellcranesnesthoney6529  2 роки тому +1

      I added second deeps because colonies had 4+ frames of brood. Like I said in the video when those emerge they will be 2 frames of bees each.
      It’s important to stay ahead of the bees. I sell nucleus colonies so I would like to take the most advantage of that buildup momentum and have them grow out more. This gives me more brood to split with.
      I pull out honey frames to “open up the brood nest” so that the queen has more room to lay. Some bees are very frugal and winter on less stores. To much honey congestion can really slow down build up.
      Thanks for the questions!

      @@gusmitchellcranesnesthoney6529 Thanks for taking the time to answer. This time of the year is there a number of honey frames you're looking for in the brood box or are you counting on your feeding to keep them going until the flow? I'm trying to find the right balance between honey/pollen frames and room to build up.

    • @gusmitchellcranesnesthoney6529
      @gusmitchellcranesnesthoney6529  2 роки тому +1

      Not really counting on the feeding, lots of early buildup nectar coming in off maple, Henbit, dandelion etc.

  • @BrianCooper901
    @BrianCooper901 2 роки тому +1

    Do you let the queens live as long as they are laying a good pattern or do you attempt to replace them after a certain number of years?

    • @gusmitchellcranesnesthoney6529
      @gusmitchellcranesnesthoney6529  2 роки тому

      I try to cycle them out as much as possible. Some are great candidates for resource hives, some just need cut in two.

    What is your determining factor of adding 2nd deep brood box? 7-8 frames of bees?

    Where are you located. The landscape is so flat, you look like you are near an ancient lake bed?
