  • I decided to check on the swarm a day after I caught them (literally in the act). This is what is happening to all my hives I am losing over the past few months. They are leaving me. I just happened to catch these guys on camera yesterday.
I don’t know if they would have eventually made it to the swarm trap (which happens to be the very top bar hive I put them in) or not. But it’s where I put them. If they decide to stay, they’ll need some syrup/sugar water to get started. So I’m adding 2 gallons of syrup from Mann Lake into a 2 gallon internal feeder. If these bees decide to leave, maybe another swarm of bees will move in. There is still “Bee Commander” swarm lure inside. Even still, any bees venturing inside will find the feed a nice source of nutrition during the dearth.
Bees really don’t have rulers to break out and measure with. Relax folks.
I have a package of Hopguard for treating the varroa mites. I believe it’s most effective when you do not have any brood present. Since this is a swarm, there’s no brood. I’m using one strip. It’s recommended to use one strip for every 5 frames of bees. I have less than 1/2 frame of bees here.
