For Halloween, I'm analyzing the sound design in the first Five Nights at Freddy's game, which demonstrates the unique roles audio can play in a horror game! Sound isn't just a scare tactic; it can support or diminish the amount of control a player feels over a nightmarish scenario.

This video's gotten a bit of information wrong. For instance, the animatronic scream in FNAF 1 is not a recording of a child screaming, it's a sound clip of a woman's scream from an 80's sci-fi horror film called _Inseminoid_ (1981). Apologies for that!

      What they said ^
I personally think this one is the best in the series from a purely horror standpoint. It does so much to build the atmosphere, more than what just adding more animatronics can do. I miss the hallucinations, the rare environmental changes, the justified audial indicators of them being close rather than some high repeating tone...

16:07 So theres this theory that I find quite interesting. The theory is that when the pizzeria was open and the power were to go out, Freddy would start playing his song and lighting up his eyes to attempt to calm down distressed children. Since his song seems to be in a music-box-lullaby-style, this would make a lot of sense.

I think that sort of design idea exists a fair amount in the series. iirc the Toy-series animatronics attack you because they’re programmed to protect children & the Glamrocks (at least Freddy & Chica) are designed to actively aid lost or stressed children until their parents or guardians can find them. In both cases you’re just sufficiently unfortunate that they’re instead trying to kill you.

And once it hits 100% the ambience will play.

Freddy laughs when he moves to another room. His last stop before your office is the bottom right corner of the map. He doesn’t go into the camera blind spot on that side like Chica.
If your door is open, Freddy is in that corner and you hear his laugh, then yes, you are already dead, and you can expect Freddy to suddenly be in your face a few seconds later.

    • @imortal333

I don’t remember the camera numbers, but if that’s the bottom-right camera, then yes. Just like all the animatronics, if you look at Freddy in the camera, he’ll be frozen in place for a bit. The amount of time he’s stuck for is dependent on what difficulty he’s set to.
A big part of winning 4/20 mode is doing a loop of closing both doors, looking at Freddy, looking at Foxy, open both doors, repeat. It’s still really tough because the strat is mostly based on Freddy taking his time when the power runs out, which he is much less likely to do on 20 difficulty.

Also, the Freddy Laugh sound clue (in addition to still spooking you even after you know how it works) is a double-edged sword or maybe even an outright trap. Yes, it tells you about his position without checking the cameras... but focusing the camera on him is the best way to stall his approach. So having that audio cue can actually lead you astray.

Also, after Freddy finishes his song and it goes dead silent, you hear footsteps in the pitch-black. It really creates a sense of terror, since you can hear movement, but you don’t know where it’s coming from or what’s making the footsteps.

The warning and countdown for the jumpscare noise, oh hell yeah. When I heard him say "I'm not going to play a jumpscare here" it felt so safe and reassuring. May his pillow always be cool, headphones never catch on doorhandles, phone charger be long enough for him to roll over, and sleep always be restful

While I'm happy you don't have to worry, I'm sad he didn't animate more of the jumpscares in the video, because his animating of Bonnie's was awesome.

Fun fact: The scream that the animatronics give off are from the 1981 movie titled “Insominoid.”
The scream is given in the movie after a woman is giving birth to an alien.

Why? Once you know the lore you realize how you misunderstood all of them. They aren't even the real monsters here. That's William. And Ballora is a very calming being.
