I'd think it would be awesome to implement the adaptive audio someway if they put the pikmin 2 boss/pikmin 3 miniboss. defence would play after a parry, big attack coming would be when someone has a final smash, big attack would be during final smashes, and the regular attack would play whenever someone is hit hard enough that it would do the zoom-in. 14:30 This is conjecture based solely on how the music makes me feel, but I'm inclined to believe this is a sort of "waiting" or "searching" track where the boss has, somehow, lost track of you. You're not in imminent danger, but the boss is still present and lumbering around. The biggest hole in this idea is that none of the current bosses (except maybe phosbat) should really be able to lose you in their arenas. Then again, it seems to be inaccessible in normal gameplay, and if it's derived from the main boss theme, it would have been easy enough to make that they might have had it earlier on in development.

I love how the different themes represent the battle styles of the bosses, mainly the mawdad and phosbat, the phosbat is anxiety inducing while the mawdad is just pure panic
The "mysterious creature" theme, both the regular and the "warning, close by" gave me some serious chills, i don't believe i'll be able to play that part when i buy the game hahaha
Gotta say, I absolutely love the video. The diagrams were super detailed and informative while keeping a nice charm to the explanations. I never realized how nuanced the Pikmin OST was. It really makes you appreciate it much more now.
I haven't played pikmin 3 deluxe yet, but hearing that Pikmin 1 theme during a battle theme is actually one of the most cool things I've heard in a while. This probably just inspired me to finally pick it up.
I like how the big battle theme sounds like you're trying to single-handedly kill the entire brass section, and they're not taking that sitting down. genre of music I will call "tuba concussion"
The drone and drum thing is true. I noticed after getting Captain Charlie back that once he appears on screen, the drums become more prominent until the music is pretty much all drum.
If a video flashes text for 3 frames we (somebody) will lower playback speed and pause wasting potentially 20+ minutes just to read it. I am very used to pausing video to read things from creaters like OSP and from my online classes prerecorded lectures.
I honestly think that the person going ham on the snare drum in that last song shows just how hardened and tough olimar is, and also shows just how much faith he has in his little Pikmin soldiers
I can’t get over that perfect intro animation. I know you’ve been using it for a while now but it’s probably my favorite channel intro on the platform.
5:21 Aside from the victory music after you beat the boss, I'm sure it was intentional that it wasn't celebratory. Since this was the first boss it's a way of saying "This is only the beginning, you must be ready to combat and conquer much greater beast from here."
I don't know why, but this boss theme gave me incredible nostalgia - not Pikmin nostalgia, mind you; for some reason, it reminded me of Psychonauts. My heart ached remembering the good ol' times of innocent childhood, before everything got so hard
What an incredible video. My favorite part, of course, is the last theme he goes over, and the mid-boss theme (though I will always miss the mid-boss long attack music). Excellent work, Scruffy!
God I love your videos so much, I was never even interested in sound design but your animations and the way you sound so interested in it just makes it a joy for me to watch your videos
Just hearing the boss music paired with the illustrations of the mawdad terrifies me. I've never played pikman, but I might have to now to get a taste of the music in action
Well, Pikmin 3 is still a very good game even if you're spoiled. It doesn't ruin the experience and there's still a lot of details not spoied. So I still recommend it to you.
Scruffy's recommendation is why I GOT Pikmin 3 a couple months ago, and I really enjoyed it! I watched the beginning of this video, then went and bought it, played through it and now I'm back :)c "what I love" is scruffys content. As a music nerd, and a gaming nerd, I'm learning WHY I enjoy the music in my favorite games so much, like Splatoon
15:19: This little jingle is a nice touch and I love it. 17:06: Mmm. Nice choice making the wraith's color palette a little different from the box--the rim lighting looks really nice also.
The music piece at 14:12 is actually used ingame! It's used by the Scornet Maestro right after it calls its swarm for an attack formation and is getting ready to attack.
I love how despite the dangerous and exciting tone of the music, the trombone (I think?) still keeps it cartoonish. Also how the "enemy defeated" theme isn't a celebration but a relief since you're not on this planet to fight, but to survive (and protect the precious Pikmin). First time watching one of your videos! Thank you for the amazing analysis that I would have never caught onto on my own.
Honestly, I always dread the final boss fight, not because the puzzles are hard, but because the music and atmosphere is so unbelievably stressful, and I think the music mostly contributes to that, which imo is pretty amazing sound design. Also SPOILERS: I’m SO glad you talked about the new boss music in the side stories, I had a big dumb smile on my face when I heard the theme for the first time
amazing, i knew the composers of these games were amazing but holy cow there so much more than that. so much complexity and the way the music explainly exactly whats going on in the game with no words is simply genius. Love these videos man keep it up !

"just watching this video and sharing it around means a lot to me" - well, your works mean a lot to us!!! 😭 also, I hope this isn't a common question/request so that I'm not being too much of a bother lmao but have you by any chance played Pokémon Sword/Shield? I just got back into it with the release of the Crown Tundra DLC and now that I'm a fan of your channel, I keep wondering what you'd have to say about the music (or just the sound design in general)! I've always been really into Pokémon music, but there's just something different about this gen. especially tracks like the battle music for "mysterious being," max raids, and gym leaders - I hear all three of them A Lot and for long stretches of time as I take on the Battle Tower or a Dynamax Adventure and each time I can't stop hopping my head along 😔 there's even a hint of adaptive audio in the gym leader track! I wouldn't have even noticed that if it weren't for your channel! anyway, I'm so sorry if that's super obnoxious of me to comment :') I'm just so interested in your takes on my favorite things lmao. I'm still excitedly waiting for your next video, whatever the topic may be!!!
7:08 I would LOVE a pikmin themed card game, probably just something single player but enemy cards could cost a certain number of pikmin to catch with some sort of luck-based system, like flipping a coin or rolling a dice, and they GIVE a certain number of pikmin in return
@@ColePhelpsLAPD maybe you have an hourglass and the deck is randomized, the goal could be to find certain goals like, fruits, treasures and ship parts in a "day", with the number of pikmin you make adding to that overall goal, meaning you have to balance fighting monsters to increase your numbers and going through the deck for point cards

the fact that this exists, can probably make a "blind speedrun" category where only boss audio is used. also, you mentioned the mini-bosses, but i think there are more of them, such as shaggy long legs.
I have watched this video so many times. Aside from the fantastic editing, voiceover, and tone. The entire concept of the video is right up my alley. I love breakdowns of unique systems in video games, but I love how you break them down and talk about them representing things in the game and what the devs/composers were trying to imply with them. It’s just such a well put together and fun video to watch and rewatch
something i’ve noticed is that portal (1 and 2, both) sort of does this as well. the music changes if you, say, go through a portal. or soar through the air. or are in danger. etc.
Fantastic video, well put together and engaging despite its highly auditory focus. There’s visual aids which are either simple, interesting or both constantly, but it’s perfectly supplementary; if you’re just an audio listener, this video works just fine on its own (for the most part).
I remember how anxious the plasm wraith music made me feel. It's so well written and I can't wait to hear all the new music in pikmin 4 and I hope you will break it down.
You didn't comment on it in the video, but I kinda find it eerie and cool how, after the Vehemoth Phosbat is visible, the different layers come together in a different way, at first it's harmonious, then it becomes a cacophony

This really makes you appreciate the soundtrack even more. I wish the bosses weren’t so easy so you had more time to appreciate it !
I like how the big battle theme sounds like you're trying to single-handedly kill the entire brass section, and they're not taking that sitting down. genre of music I will call "tuba concussion"
I never knew the pikmin music was so complicated! You did an amazing job showing it, and the band did just as good!
The drone and drum thing is true. I noticed after getting Captain Charlie back that once he appears on screen, the drums become more prominent until the music is pretty much all drum.
he is brick shaped I love him.
That reincorporation of the Pikmin 1 theme in that side stories section is just so triumphant and nostalgic. Love it.
2:34 I have been playing Pikmin for so long that when this played I actually looked around in panic.
11:40 is the equivalent of the player saying *"LOCK FASTER DAMMIT."*
🤣
I'm sorry I can't hear you over the sound of me bullying the Scornet Maestro
"feel free to pause the video!"
me reading that directly after pausing my video: dont mind if i do then
If a video flashes text for 3 frames we (somebody) will lower playback speed and pause wasting potentially 20+ minutes just to read it. I am very used to pausing video to read things from creaters like OSP and from my online classes prerecorded lectures.
@@jasonreed7522 this is 1000% factual in every single way possible, I didn’t even realize I did it at first it’s just instinctual now
I honestly think that the person going ham on the snare drum in that last song shows just how hardened and tough olimar is, and also shows just how much faith he has in his little Pikmin soldiers
6:59 wow these cool diagrams are awesome. The animation is so nice. Didn’t have to go so hard for some diagrams but I’m glad you did.
Both made me very interested in the world not shown in-game. I want to see more darn it!
Anyone else realize that the plasm wraith's final fight theme was used for the first trailer of pikmin 3 deluxe
Yeah. I find it weird when game trailers do that.
Huh. Never knew.
I will forever watch this channel. That "What I Love" theme is the best!!
10:40 “and a timpani roll; that’s cute”
Anyone else get all warm and fuzzy when Scruffy says that and find that hella cute?
No? Just me?
Oh okay...
Now get out of youtube because of the terrible joke you made
@@Spectralanomaly6 Shut Up
I didn’t but I understand
What an incredible video. My favorite part, of course, is the last theme he goes over, and the mid-boss theme (though I will always miss the mid-boss long attack music).
Excellent work, Scruffy!
God I love your videos so much, I was never even interested in sound design but your animations and the way you sound so interested in it just makes it a joy for me to watch your videos
Just hearing the boss music paired with the illustrations of the mawdad terrifies me. I've never played pikman, but I might have to now to get a taste of the music in action
15:19 yeah I should have stopped at the spoiler alert lol
Well, Pikmin 3 is still a very good game even if you're spoiled. It doesn't ruin the experience and there's still a lot of details not spoied. So I still recommend it to you.
Just don’t look at a letsplay
@@jorgemtzb9359 after 3 years, I can confirm: I had a great time regardless lol
Scruffy's recommendation is why I GOT Pikmin 3 a couple months ago, and I really enjoyed it! I watched the beginning of this video, then went and bought it, played through it and now I'm back :)c "what I love" is scruffys content. As a music nerd, and a gaming nerd, I'm learning WHY I enjoy the music in my favorite games so much, like Splatoon
This is really cool, I'm learning to code and planing on making a game. I'm going to try to make music like this
15:19: This little jingle is a nice touch and I love it.
Also SPOILERS:
I’m SO glad you talked about the new boss music in the side stories, I had a big dumb smile on my face when I heard the theme for the first time
I loooove adaptive audio, it does wonders for immersion.
I feel like his videos are easier to watch anytime, because he talks so calmly and clearly at the same time.
amazing, i knew the composers of these games were amazing but holy cow there so much more than that. so much complexity and the way the music explainly exactly whats going on in the game with no words is simply genius. Love these videos man keep it up !
Thank you for the 18:06 Deluxe spoiler warning! I got so engrossed I nearly watched into spoilers :P Trying to go into the new version blind but haven't had a chance to play it yet!
My nana has never played Pikmin or any game for that matter and she still enjoyed this video, she likes how you explain it and talk about it and she doesn't get completely lost even though she's never seen or played it, when she saw me watching this she sat down and started watching too and wanted to know if I could start at the beginning so she could watch the whole thing, so basically, your videos are so well done that people that have nothing to do with the topic still enjoy and understand it
"just watching this video and sharing it around means a lot to me" - well, your works mean a lot to us!!! 😭
also, I hope this isn't a common question/request so that I'm not being too much of a bother lmao but have you by any chance played Pokémon Sword/Shield?
How would the time management work?
@@ColePhelpsLAPD maybe you have an hourglass and the deck is randomized, the goal could be to find certain goals like, fruits, treasures and ship parts in a "day", with the number of pikmin you make adding to that overall goal, meaning you have to balance fighting monsters to increase your numbers and going through the deck for point cards
@@superspider64I honestly really like that idea, you could probably tell by my name and pfp that I am a fan of spin off of games that are in a completely different genre.
I've never seen or played pikmin before myself, but this is just so charming! I plan to watch a playthrough now, just because of how funky and dynamic the music sounds. Thank you for always making musical education entertaining and fun! It makes it easy for people like myself to pay attention. Keep doing what you do :D
In the mysterious lifeform default loop it sounds like pikmin singing in a ghostly way, maybe to signal death or uncertainty, and makes the player think about dying pikmin making them understand this thing is dangerous
Loved how you broke down the new boss theme with its Pikmin 1 leitmotifs, it also uses some parts from the Beady Long Leg’s theme from Pikmin 1 called Impending Doom. Not to mention the intro uses the Titan Dweevil’s defeat theme.
I’ve heard the boss music so much and this video showed me more about how adaptive the music is
I can’t believe that content this amazing is free.
Over the course of watching a few of Scruffy’s vids, I realize how much better they get while wearing headphones.
This is so well done, much like all of your other work - you're able to visualize ideas like these so freaking well, it amazes me!
I love that the hey at 5:30 is the same hey from hey pikmin.
16:06 as a kid I thought they recorded a railroad crossing bell and threw it in there
I love watching this video no matter how many times I have already
Sameee IVE BEEN WATCHING THIS SINCE I WAS 3
Still listening to your end of the day A cappella what a bop, makes me happy to see the pikmin fan base alive and well
the fact that this exists, can probably make a "blind speedrun" category where only boss audio is used.
also, you mentioned the mini-bosses, but i think there are more of them, such as shaggy long legs.
That's some amazing adaptive music, the most advanced i have heard of yet.
I y😂😮no 😅😮th😮tjwi tow
Noiw n
something i’ve noticed is that portal (1 and 2, both) sort of does this as well. the music changes if you, say, go through a portal. or soar through the air. or are in danger. etc.
Oohh, so like how noita has calm, combat, heavy combat versions of many parts of the ost
the theme for when the mysterious life form is near olimar kinda sound like the train warning signal
Lol yep
Gahd I get chills every time we watch this and you compare the high flutes to pikmin cries for help.
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess has adaptive boss themes as well.
R E A L L Y !?!?!???
When the boss is not attacking, when is attacking, when vulnerable and when has hit you is the conditions for it
@@Fwuffy_Cuddles Yes, I believe Deku Toad is a good example
@@tweer64 stalord
Loved how you put all the scores in perspective to show what's happening in game. Very interesting
Fantastic video, well put together and engaging despite its highly auditory focus. There’s visual aids which are either simple, interesting or both constantly, but it’s perfectly supplementary; if you’re just an audio listener, this video works just fine on its own (for the most part).
im so glad you returned to pikmin its such a great topic to watch you cover especially after 2 years
we do not speak about “Hey! Pikmin.”
Hello Mario
Hello Mario
Hello Mario
Hello Mario
😑
Every time I click on a Scruffy video and I hear the “hello!” I get this huge smile on my face. It’s just so charming
The danger type loop is very helpful to know for ultra spicy mode so you know to focus attacks on the mandibles to break them
I remember how anxious the plasm wraith music made me feel. It's so well written and I can't wait to hear all the new music in pikmin 4 and I hope you will break it down.
I rarely get a nostalgic feeling as strong as when I hear music from or referencing pikmin 1
You didn't comment on it in the video, but I kinda find it eerie and cool how, after the Vehemoth Phosbat is visible, the different layers come together in a different way, at first it's harmonious, then it becomes a cacophony
all i hear from pikmin music is condensed stress
the pellet number on the drum? i love it, that's such a great detail, my god
I keep coming back to this
