Thanks to my friend jesterzon for help with the concept of this video and help with the What I Love jingle arrangement at the end, and to my friend Wolfgang for helping me with the script!
Join me for a dive into the Doppler effect, how it's implemented into Mario Kart games, and how you could implement it too!
{ ? I ♥ }
Something interesting about Mario Kart is that it's really important for players to know what's happening off-screen. Sound design really helps with this, since you can HEAR a hazard (shell, star, bullet bill) before you SEE it. On top of that, the doppler effect gives you a really solid gauge of how quickly that hazard is approaching and when it'll catch up to you. It's a really clever implementation of sound design in games that seems to get overlooked a lot!
+
That immense panic you feel when you start hearing a dopplerized Starman effect slowly speed up behind you
In Mario kart 8 it gives you an indicator on screen though
@@duckysnake It doesn't grow in size though as whatever is behind you gets closer. (and sometimes like online for example it doesn't even show up)
As well as it's only for red shells, bullet bills, and the star. Green shells, fire balls, and the boomerang don't have that pop up.
@@Wryyyong Hearing the BWOP BWOP BWOP BWOP of the blue shell warning:
1:12 I always loved how exaggerated the Doppler effect was in Mario kart Wii because it made it feel like those items would actually physically come into contact with you because of how set in reality the audio was. It felt like, If you paid close enough attention, you could hear exactly where the person using the item was based on audio alone
and how he made the horn sound like it’s beeping to the mario theme song omg I love it
@@MisterMoodyHereBike horns specifically actually DO have a chance to sound like that in Mario Kart Wii, as one of three possible horns for each bike when another vehicle collides with them.
The music kicking up towards the end in the same way Mariokart Wii does when going through the menus was a lovely touch!
I loved to go forward an back through the menus in MK Wii as a kid to 'control' the music.
@@bastscho didn't we all? LOL
and then the doppler effect ending the video, too. amazing.
I saw this comment whims it was playing lol
Hey joe, weird to see you here with this many likes
I really loved the visual take on this, your character look like the Jerries from Soul, idk if that's intentional but I like it!
lol I thought the exact same thing
Jerry: “Hey there terry!”
Terry: “don’t talk to me”
8:55 "Oi! Video's over! Go home!"
He’s been doing this art style for a few years now
@@ItSquishy Ditto lol
Scruffy: *uses the doppler effect on the last trombone note like a car engine*
Me: He did- HE DID THE THING!

#Glissando~
What thing?
The final theme was made by jesterzon as Scruffy mentions in the credits, huge kudos to him
I've just realised but Scruffy rarely actually uses in-game footage, they're all just drawings. That's honestly really cool and it's a testament to how well he can get his point across without even needing to actually show the game
Full body Scruffy showing up hit me like a ton of bricks
He also does in his second fnaf video
Is it just me or does he look like the Jerries from Soul?
@@thinkingemoji5924 Yeah, I also thought of the Soul outlines. It's a beautiful style.
Thanks I almost thought that it was just me that is lost. I like it but I thought "I only missed the last video what happened??"
This is beautiful
Yeah it is
grant :o
Of course
1:47 that transition from 2D to 3D made me really happy for some reason
Wow, I didn't even notice
0:22 That animation is just so dang adorable. Please do more of them!
I wanna applaud that while lots of UA-camrs end up putting unnecessary visual effects that don't actually add anything and are mostly there to give the illusion of being professional, Scruffy used visually interesting effects that both aid what he's trying to convey and are fun to look at.
His videos are really good, I agree!
True
"the illusion of being professional" if they're a UA-camr, they are a professional.... Production value absolutely does add something to the video
@@LFielding07 I think they mean inefficient visuals, like how people put random ass giant red arrows (that dont even point at anything) on thumbnails only because the algorithm rewards it.
And to add, not distracting
The animation in this video is such a genuine treat. It reminds me of those old school Pixar animated shorts. Masterpiece. The explanation in theory, and the science of it all while applying the mathematics involving physics. I love these videos because you take the time to appreciate the genuine love and care that most consumers NEVER appreciate. As someone who aims to become a composer, this warms me heart. Thank you for acknowledging the love and care put into the nuances of games from Nintendo, and many other cult classics. Cheers! 🥂
i never really thought mario kart had such a deep sound engine
Mario Kart has a deep sound engine
Mario Kart has deep engine soumd
Beauty of video games. Games like Mario kart has details like this that make the game far more immersive. You may not observe it, but it surely makes a difference in it's absence.
nintendo DOES put a lot of thought into their games... usually
If you don't notice anything wrong, then it must be right. Only ever notice something if it stands out against everything else.
@@davidmcgill1000 true honestly
I love the ending credits mimicing mariokart wii's menu music. When the checkerboards moved at the top and bottom of the screen at 8:05 and the music began, I immediately knew what was going on.
Oh my god! You really stepped up the animation in this one!!! :0
Especially loved when the 2d and 3d met
•.•
It's so cool watching each video get smoother in concept and animation, to what end?!
I’ve never seen this channel before and it reminds me so much of the Pixar movie Soul
Bro its like the shadow that cancelled movie
pure awesomeness
interessant... 🤔
Hö Alex
Righr alexi, that is outstanding content :D
We can agree
Öh moin lang nicht gesehen lol
For those of you not using headphones, Scruffy really put in the effort to have sounds move from one side to the other. It really *does* feel like a car is racing by!
Thank's for the heads-up. I put on headphones just for this video :)
Should've saw this before, when only using one of my wireless earbuds, it makes the sound mono
You know you can hear it with stereo speakers too, right?
Got my surround sound system x)
goddamn, he even had the pawn move a bit as he placed it down at 2:13
Wow, I never noticed that! Such attention to detail!
Can I just say I'm absolutely blown away with the entirety of this video? The clarity in explantion, the 3d and 2d animations, the sound, music, everything in this is absolutely incredible and I can see the huge amount of effort put into it. Fantastic job Scruffy!
IKR?! It's like that on every video to!
The art style of Scruffy's avatar reminds me of Terry and the Jerrys from Soul
It's very unique and interesting, having a 2D character interact in a 3D plane this way
Seconded
Third...ed
I KNOW RIGHT? SCRUFFY YOU’RE AMAZING
This guy needs to make an animated series or something because he's got skillz
They should have taught the doppler effect like THIS in my physics class! It's miles more entertaining!
Aha get it? Miles? CAUSE ITS MARIO KA- nevermind
Not to mention far more clear and digestible.
This video is easier to understand, too
It's easier to absorb information when conveyed through ways your familiar with
@@karma6970 I agree, wish all education were like this
The blend of 2d and 3D animation was surreal as hell
You should make a pocast about music cause youre voice is wierdly calming
Id watch it.
@@pennyforyourthots you can’t watch a podcast( the majority of them anyway)
you can tell by his voice he'd be a nice peson
thank god someone said it. i'd love to hear an hour about the stuff he enjoys tbh
I know such a smooth voice
"aaaaaAaaAAaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaAAaaaAaaaahhhh!"
-what my friends hear when im playing 200c with the p wing on baby park
this is such a high quality episode omg
animated scruffy is adorable and the way you explain things is very clear and concise
(there used to be fast captions at 5:06 but they're gone now because they weren't supposed to be there, for reply context)
Scruffy tried making you look like an idiot lmfao
Thank you for pointing this out! This has been my first time using UA-cam's new system to auto-sync captions from a text file. In uploading my original script, I had forgotten about several production notes I had written in. Hopefully now the captions read a bit better!
@@ScruffyMusic giga-Chad tbh
no problem!! captions help a lot because i tend to zone out a lot and it means i can easily get caught up to speed if i stop listening for a second or two. thanks!!
2:14--oh, the pawn jittering when you let go, that is FANTASTIC.
Wow. The animation of these little "get-to-know" videos is really getting more and more detailed. Makes the visual learning presented even more intuitive! :D
Always did love the Doppler-ing on powerups, especially. Was always very amusing to hear the intense tunes of a Super Star behind me and swerve out of the way, hearing it trail off as whomever continues their short-term power trip onwards.
it also helps in a gameplay sense, since you can judge how far it is without looking at it.
This is a really good explanation for the Doppler effect, schools could probably use this video to explain it better than any textbook could
The Doppler effect is cool!
Imagine being buddies with Scruffy and he just comes over to ur house and asks if you want to play Mario Kart so he can “test some things”. Would 1000% be a part of that
really love the cute little scruffy "ʰᵉˡˡᵒᵎ"

@Scar Nah that wasn’t Low-Key cringe It was Noticeably Cringy
Maybe it was cringe, but
That's okay

@Scar man i am Just a neurodivergent person with emotional attachment issues :(
I literally just learned about the Doppler effect in physics today and I have to say this was a lot more informational and fun. Nice stuff
Dude same. Learned it today in class and this was so much better than my boring physics teacher explaining in such a boring way
Why does his "Hello, I'm Scruffy" line ALWAYS give me a Big Smile? :)
I’m at 1:59. Just want to say “Damn the production quality on this. Great!”
The quality of these videos is improving so fast it'll cause the doppler effect!
Only if it's passing you.
3:44 I REALLY love the edit here where the music you used exhibits the Doppler effect for more clarity. That’s really helped me understand the concept of frequency change.
I appreciate that level of care and detail.
I always love to see the dopppler effect simulated in games, not even racing ones just games in general, it's like a hidden gem that only a few notice and appreciate.
Scruffy would be the best university professor ever
He makes seemingly complicated topics so easy to understand
GOD I LOVE HOW YOU FOCUS ON SOUNDS IN VIDEO GAMES!! ITS AMAZING MY GUUUUUUUY!!!
This is some true quality content. I'm glad this exists on this God forsaken platform.
the production quality is OFF THE CHARTS on this one! i noticed at the end with the What I Love part, you did a doppler effect pitch shift in the song itself as the car went off screen after leading the camera to the text. GENIUS
I thought I was the only one who appreciated the immersive sound of Mario kart wii
Not so.
As you can see, there are dozens of us.
my favorite part of the use of this in the series.... it insinuates the music from a power-up is a 'real-life', tanglible, not-meta occurence 😭 like we assume video game music to not be part of the "material universe", but that doppler effect takes you out of that for a second in a way that's genuinely super funny.
Yeah, just thinking about the enemies hearing Mario a few football fields away because of the Starman theme blasting, Link obtaining an item and half blowing someone elses eardrum out, or being a Space Pirate and hearing Samus get a Missile Upgrade, right above you.
Now that you pointed that out, I just had a thought...
What if the items that play music highjack your radio? And also, what if each track's theme is also playing from your radio?
You basically just applied differential equations to sound design and I love it
Absolutely phenomenal breakdown of these little game audio solutions! I love the focus on WHY many of these decisions are made, rather than just HOW... in practice, that process of problem solving is 90% of the job, and the actual technical stuff just fills in the gaps.
Honestly I love the design of Scruffy's little… Persona? With the curly bracket hair, square brackets for the glasses, it's super clever
I was here when it said “FINAL” at the end of the title
Why did it say that
@@eicelandicchicken484 Probably had some drafts stored on his computer and forgot to rename it
@@eicelandicchicken484 no idea
Wow, there is really nothing else on UA-cam like Scruffy... blown away by this video, the animation quality, the clearly well-researched topic, the concise clarity of complex concepts, and just the fun, interesting, nerdy-ness of it all! Can’t wait for more to come, keep up the good work, Sir Scruffy!!! 👏🏼 :)
scruffy, this is so good. you’re breaking into “game dev tutorial” ground here with the part on how the doppler effect is made!
It's incredible how so many game designers use this every day and never question how it's coded, or even notice it's there. Most of the time it's just "Alright, that sounds good." and moving onto something else.
I thought this was a music channel, but this is math, my brain can't comprehend this
music is literally a type of maths, dude
Music is literally just happy/unhappy math sounds.
Music had a metric shit ton of math in it...
Doesn't matter too much if you "get" it or not, as long as you enjoyed it.
Or at least, that's how I see it.
1:49's animation is soo good. Is something hard to pull off yet you did it amazingly
I like the animated scruffy, he looks nice
I’ve always known about the Doppler effect and what it meant, but your explanation using the ‘bunched up’ and ‘spread out’ waves has really helped me actually understand it for the first time.
Thank goodness I decided to stay up late tonight, Scruffy's posting a new video! :D
Edit: HOLY, the quality of his videos went to a whole new level!? Wild!
I was expecting Futurama levels of Scruffy, but I got much much more. A more sophisticated Scruffy, per-se?
i love this scruffy avatar design
What's interesting is how I never consciously noticed the Doppler effect in Mario Kart, but by simply seeing the thumbnail for this video, it was able to make me realize just from memory that it's there, and begin to appreciate it.
The production value here! Insane!
Finally someone explains this sh¡t simple enough.
Love when games use clever details like this in the audio design.
But don't other racing games do the same? Saying this as a person who doesn't play most racing games
He already infers such at the 55 second mark
Most, if not all, racing games do this precisely because of how important it is to our perception of speed and distance - which are core to racing games. But I think he just picked Mario Kart as the example here because 1) it’s a popular game series, 2) a game he knows well, and 3) easily illustrates the point to many other players.
@@melonrue I see
This was absolutely fantastic. The visual aids are so clean, all the little Mario Kart motifs in the ambient music (My ears picked up on the various references, no matter how small! That was so cool!) I always wanted to know a little more about how this system works, and this was the best way of explaining it!!
THE ANIMATION WAS SO AWESOME!
Love this! Doppler effect is one of the (many) little touches that I absolutely take for granted in games, and forget that it doesn't just "exist" in the game world until someone works it out.
This man made a whole ass educational 3D animation for this video
this is literally the first time someone has explained the doppler effect to me and have it make sense. i thank you for teaching me what my 9th grade physical science teacher failed to teach
Oh my gosh Scruffy! Your content just keeps getting better. I absolutely love how you blended 2D and 3D animation so smoothly. I always love hearing you talk about sounds and music and I find your videos so engaging. Also, your animated sona is super cute. Keep at it! Love it all!
This blew my mind in all the best possible ways. Random YT suggestions go right sometimes!
Every time I see Scruffy upload I get so excited. His videos are such high quality and the aesthetic is really unique. They're calming, educational, and entertaining. As a music/sound effects, gaming, and animation nerd, I really appreciate all the effort he puts in these videos. It’s amazing how much more advqnced the animation has become but the content has stayed digestible and entertaining. Keep it up Scruffy!
You’re one of the only channel which all videos I watch I finish. I don’t know what you do to make your videos so awesome
Now I want to see an entire racing game in this style
we *just* happened to go over this in my physics class, so thanks for helping solidify this with an example i can understand!
Scruffy's character design is so cool!! I love the squiggly parentheses for hair, reminiscent of his channel's writing and logo. Scruffy is a lover of small details, and so am I.
As much as i don't like to compare art styles, it reminds me of the abstracts in the movie Soul that came out in 2020. It's so interesting seeing mostly 2D shapes/figure interact with a 3D world, or even vice/versa. Scruffy's style continues to amaze me, love his stuff
I don’t know what it is, but the sound, looks, and feel of wooden blocks and toys are just very calming and amusing.
im so glad someone finally talks about the doppler effect in mario kart, I always found it so cool whenever someone passed by with the star and it really felt like the music followed that guy, it felt so impactful and thrilling to be passed by someone with a bullet or just to hear their horn beep
While I loved listening to your music arrangements these past few months I'm so excited for your return to more long form content! The effort and care put into this video has just absolutely blown me away. As always looking forward to more excellent content scruffy!
The inclusion of this 3D animation just took your already incredible videos to another level. Absolutely fantastic Scruffy I'm in awe.
The absolute production quality in these videos are amazing! Thanks for explaining these things to us
Scruffy explaining the doppler effect:
Me thinking his little avatar is the cutest thing in the world like seriously:
Edit: And of course it's another wonderful video, this time with 2D and 3D mediums being used together seamlessly. I always love when you upload What I Love because they're always so well put together.
HOW CAN A CHANNEL BE MORE THAN 100% AMAZING!? OKAY SERIOUSLY, THIS CHANNEL HAS BEEN IN MY NUMBER 1 SPOT FOR SO LONG THAT I AM OFFICIALLY HAPPY TO SAY THAT THIS IS MY FAVOURITE CHANNEL ON UA-cam.
GOOD JOB!!!!!
"hello, I'm scruffy."
Yes. Yes you are
The man animated the entire explanation in 3d while also drawing over it in 2d animations
Big bravooo that is an extensive amount of effort
The animation in this one reminds me of those children's shows from the early 2000's-2010's that only Aired at 3 in the morning
he looks exactly from the pixar movie Soul haha
The production value on this is so unnecessarily good.
i love this little representation of scruffy, so cute! and perfectly matches the voice
Its amazing how in any videogame, especially mariokart, millions upon millions of computations are made and a result of those computations are translated to visual and audio effects
This is so good!! You've really been stepping it up in terms of visuals lately and I love it so much
Thank you so much for this formula where you subtract the old and new distance! I'm coding a Doppler Effect Simulation and I didn't find the formula I needed, not even on Wikipedia and this helped me so much that I was able to finish the Simulation! Thanks :)
Love this! A detail that has been under my nose this whole time but I've never paid attention to, and now I know to look out for it and can appreciate racing games I love even more!
Presentation and music in this video also excellent as always. Love to see you incorporating your avatar character and 3d elements more. Thanks for the work you do!
mariokart wii is my favorite mariokart to date. the powerups were perfect honestly, the achievements obscure, and boy do we love the music! well done scruffy, this was executed absolutely perfectly, visuals, examples, and all
guys he's becoming stronger, he has entered the third dimension!
Man how Mario Kart added the doppler effect on the Mega Mushroom and hearing the song slowly pitch up behind you is the scariest thing you can get in your childhood
YOOO THE ANIMATION IS SO GOOD!
Every single video Scruffy makes is always just so high quality. Fantastic as always.
Scruffy this is SO. UNELIEVABLY. COOL.
Thank you for sharing such an interesting topic ^^
seeing the screen zoom out to see scruffy himself in that extremely high quality animation makes me very happy
Scruffy really out here looking like Terry from Soul
Seriously though, loving the step up in the animation, it’s hella cute
The absolute best part of this video is 8:50 - A little not to the whole explanation that is well incorporated.
This video is insanely well produced. And so clean too.
Man, your presentation never fails to amaze me. Everything flows together so well!
This has to be one of the highest quality youtube videos ive seen from visuals to audio to script in forever
