  • Essential Oil Safety (and Are Essential Oil Diffusers Safe?): bit.ly/2ShOEKX
Essential oils have been shown in studies to have very few negative side effects or risks when they are used as directed. But given how popular essential oils have become in recent years, and how many different brands of oils are now available, it’s not surprising that there’s some growing concerns regarding essential oil safety.
On this episode of Ancient Medicine Today, I'm talking about the top 10 mistakes people make with essential oils as well as internal use, topical use, and aromatic use.

Lavender, mint, eucalyptus, and lemon are all my favorites. Lavender just calms me down. Mint is for when I want to stay awake. Eucalyptus is for when I'm tired. Lemon is for when I'm feeling good. :)

@@hasnaat8123 Mint contains menthol, which binds to your cold receptors and increases their sensitivity. This causes the affected area to feel as if it is colder, which triggers a response from you body suggesting the possibility of danger. Because your body suspects danger, it prepares for fight or flight by releasing epinephrine (or adrenalin) and cortisol. These hormones increase alertness, dilate the blood vessels, and raise the heart rate. This is what causes you to feel awake. It's similar to pinching yourself or listening to loud music to stay up, because it basically just coerces your body into releasing hormones that keep you alert.

you're not going to like my response but I'm going to tell you anyway ....i learned aromatherapy with a guy who in the 1970s went to France to study real perfume making with the experts.
... later he added the title aromatherapy to his business cards .
.I got to smell what these real oils are like and the majority of the stuff in all those health food stores is synthetic and or inferior or water down with other oils .
if you're really really serious your best bet is to get the money together or get student loans... it probably would cost a lot to go to the perfumery school in France.
... the only reason I say that is because even if you study with a so-called professional aromatherapist..
.. you don't know how much they do or do not really know .
....some of these people are crackpots and have never smelt all of the real oils ...
. ..so some of them don't even know what it is that THEY don't know... if you understand what I'm saying.
...... just us too many people in America have never even had a real Pizza...
they think going to Domino's, Papa John's ,Little Caesars , all those places have fake pizza ...
.... they are loaded with chemicals, and preservatives and some even put high fructose corn syrup in the dough and the sauces.
... and don't even really use real cheese ...they use that stuff made from oil... cheese is a dairy product .
.... the same applies the aromatherapy and essential oils Market.
... most people don't know what these real oils are supposed to smell like .
....so I'm telling you your best bet is to really learn it at the right place.
.. go to France it'll change your life I'm sure once you smell a real Clary Sage or hundred-year-old rose oil or real kananga real Hyacinth you never forget what any of these smell like and right away you know when something doesn't smell right

Being a certified aromatherapist, I advice/inform my clients on all the issues mentioned in the video as well. Glad to see that someone is giving such excellent information to those who are not trained or educated on essential oils, since they are not so “innocent”, “harmless” or “safe” as everyone thinks they are!! Yes,they are very interesting and could help people in several ailments,but...Many of those have serious contradictions and should be used in low quantities or not at all! Regarding pregnancy: it is adviced during the first trimester that pregnant women should avoid using ANY essential oil at all. After the first trimester only two or three essential oils could be used, and they should definitely be diluted in a carrier oil. Kudos for this video!!

Love your channel, so informative and interesting. Thank you. Do you know much about using essential oils in candles? Most blogs say 'don't bother' as the hot throw scent is weak and essential oils are expensive. I hesitate to use fragrance oils in candles because even though they give off a strong hot throw, they are synthetic and can bring on a headache. Kind regards

why would you mix eucalyptus and peppermint, that's like chewing spearmint, and peppermint gum at the same time, there's such little difference between the two, it's utterly pointless!

To Nika N: it’s in a diffuser n I think it’s like 2 cups of clean water , n I put 10 eucalyptus drops n five of the rosemary. But if I want it really strong I put a couple of drops of each oil until I get the smell I want. After that I sit next to it n inhale n relax 😌 n enjoy the moment.

Also adding these 2 oils to ur shampoo help ur hair grow 👍🏻 it’s amazing. Great smell nice sensation on the scalp n softens up the hair + hair growth. In a big Shampoo bottle 5 drops of eucalyptus oil n 10 of rosemary. In a regular shampoo bottle 5 rosemary n 3 eucalyptus drops.

Please be very careful with tea tree oil. I used to use it a lot for ringworm, athlete's foot, first aid, and for cleaning. I did so for many years with no issues, however all of a sudden I developed a very severe allergy to it. In other words, I became sensitized to it to the point that even a brief exposure to a tiny bit would result in huge water blisters, and a rash that would take over a month to clear. Perhaps if I had had some competent advice concerning its use, I would have only used it diluted and not ended up with the allergy. It was a very frightening experience.

Whether it be for myself or a friend, I do a bunch of research & reading before mixing & using specific oils in my rollers or sniffers. Always better to be safe, & hey I might learn something new along the way. Like using Castor Oil when making topical rubs. Castor beans have their own anti-inflammatory properties so when mixed with something like Lavender it makes for a great rub for sore muscles, joints, etc. About 3- 4 drops per tablespoon of Castor.

Tea Tree and eucalyptus oil I'm totally addicted to n I can't stop abusing these oil smells but they don't last long n that's why I keep sniffing it or licking it or putting it on a cigarette.

Dr Axe, I've been looking for essential oils & find myself perplexed by the shear volume of choices. Not all state origins, production, nor quality value such as organic & third party testing seal. Are there companies making essential oils properly? If so, will you please clear the way by naming some?

I agree with all of these points. However, I think all oils should be diluted unless it’s a rare, aggressive short-term treatment. I also think internal use can be dangerous unless you are under the care of a certified aromatherapist. But, your video is definitely a step in the right direction.

    • @lisat9707
      @lisat9707 6 років тому +6

Sarah Ferguson I hear this over and over from Aromatherapists. Personally I think it's a super safe insurance driven approach. They might get into big trouble if they taught that you can use Lavender on the skin undiluted and one of their former students clients reacts to it. Not wrong exactly but not 100% true. It's a safer way to start and a good idea but not entirely necessary in most cases. when somthing is proven safe over and over and over again like Frankincense it proves that the blanket rule is not 100% accurate. it's a good guideline to start until you learn more (from credible sources like Robert Tisserland). Robert Tisserland is a recognized top authority on safe use of Essential oils. He literally wrote the book on it. I have read it. Have fun learning more! don't close your mind just because one authority says somthing. Science is all about trying to prove things right or wrong and accepting the results. If others didn't accept being proven wrong we would still believe the earth was flat and the sun revolved around the earth.

This is a quick response. A oil that might be right for you might not be right for everyone. I work theater seasonaly and essential oils are all over and are often shared. One night, someone gave me some oil topicly as i was working not telling me what it was. Soon after I had a asthma attack. What they used was a anti stress blend that had sandlewood in it. Sandlewood is one of my allergy triggers.
