Really awesome channel, all good stuff without any nonsense or filler. Got a head scratcher for you: I'm trying to install a METRA AXCAM step-down 12v to 6v converter in a 2017 Crosstrek to keep the backup camera working when installing an android HU. Problem is the METRA only has 3 wires, and the wires I need to tap into are also 3, not 4. According to the instructions, the GROUND and the NEGATIVE for the video signal are on the same BLACK wire, and the POSITIVE for the video signal is on a RED wire. The METRA AXCAM says to tap its BLUE/RED to the a WHITE WIRE,and its BLUE/WHITE to the reverse wire (BROWN YELLOW). However, when switching the car into reverse the HU tries to display the backup camera but all I get is video noise. Obviously one of the video wires is incorrect, but the wiring diagram also only identifies 3 wires for the backup cam (c11, c12, c20). Could the RED wire be for power, and the WHITE wire be for the video signal? I'm lost.

thanks you so much for this, I recently had a really bad experience. went and bought a pioneer head unit and opted to have geek squad install, well showed up for my scheduled appointment and he ends up calling me back in after looking at the truck/suv and says that since the dealer installed a aftermarket Toyota nav entertainment system he was going to have to add 149$ more for a harness and hour and one half hour to undo all the dealer did then add the harness to hook up the new head unit. now im no expert but all the wires are there for the new head unit except this rear camera which you just showed me how to do. all total 304$ additional cost already to the 130$ appointment which I was at that has now has to be rescheduled to a new one. well do I have *&%%$ written on my forehead, so I gave it all back really upset....these guys should have told me this in the first place, even after I said it looked intimidating to me cause of the rear back up camera has a 4p hookup (bec108 eclipse rear camera model number) not the yellow one like in this video and the new pioneer has the yellow input.. I know I could have done this hell you sodder right in the car whats wrong with the geek squad?

    Great info.
My situation, I installed a pioneer avh-490bs head unit in my 06 jeep commander. I wasn’t aware during the install that I could retain the stock camera at the time.
So now I’m thinking of splicing into the wiring at the camera and then running forward since I’m certain no one makes an adapter to retain the stock camera.
I’m fairly confident in my installation and mechanical skills.
My question to y’all is what all do you recommend as far as hardware I’d need to purchase first before attempting this?
My considerations at this juncture is without the stock radio I won’t be able to produce your results with simple testing since I can’t actually engage (or know when) the camera.
The other question to all of this is id like to install a camera up front (my wife and I do a lot of wheeling, we’d like to be able to engage the cameras so we can see our obstacles without having to get out) would it be possible with this type of setup?
Thanks for the videos, keep’em coming.

This was a helpful video (learning the two things needed are signal plus and minus, and power plus and minus). I want to leave some info for anyone trying to retain a factory camera in a 2012 Ford Escape (Limited). The camera is always powered, so leave the power alone. The signal reaches the factory receiver on a plug. It's the only one with just two wires connected. Lighter color is signal plus, darker is signal minus. Cut the wires from the plug and connect to an RCA plug (lighter color to center post) and camera will work with aftermarket receiver (if it has RCA rear camera input).

Added a Kenwood ddx6705s and need to grab the two wires to make the cam work. I found the wires I need in the top map light area. You do you where I can grab the wires under the kick panel? There are so many wire bundles and it would save me a lot of time! thank you.

So I have a question about my 2008 toyota sequoia. I want to install a factory camera to a aftermarket stereo. I noticed one day when looking at where the camera would be placed in the rear I saw that it already is prewired in the event if I wanted to install a camera later on. The wire runs through the headliner towards the rear view mirror. I guess what I want to know is from the pre existing wiring should I only require to solder on a RCA male connection onto the pre exisitng rca wires? or do I also need to do something with a reverse wire? If i need to do something with the reverse wire what should it connect to or how would I go about integrating towards the camera working. I also noted in your video that you used a 12 volt converter to 6 volt would I need that? Please Reply...Thanks

Hi, Guys,Fantastic videos but I'm left with one question - I have a 2017 Dodge Grand Caravan and I'm installing a Pioneer AVH-X5700BHS that I have on hand from a previous vehicle and want to retain the factory backup camera - do you know offhand if the camera is 12v or 6v?? If 6v I need the 12v to 6v converter to run a feed from the accessory lead??? If the camera is 12v the converter is not necessary??? Going to use the PAC SWI interface you have suggested so it already includes a reverse input.TIA

My Stinger HEIGH10 has both resistive and digital connection capabilities for SWC and reverse camera wiring. I'm currently using my old aftermarket Android head unit's controller module to get everything working, but the aftermarket dash kit is missing some OE features...plus having physical buttons for climate controls is way better than the touch screens of the aftermarket dash.

This is great! Thank you very much. Now I have a question thats a bit opposite. I have a Kenwood DNX double din unit going into a 2009 Acura MDX. The MDX has a screen at the very top of the dash that has the back up camera on it. What I want to do is use the video out option from the kenwood and hardwire it or make a video connection into the factory screen at the top of the MDX dash. I'm a pretty capable person and the testing and wiring in this video is pretty common for me, i understand it well. But is it possible for you to do a write up of a rough video of how I can accomplish what i'm looking to do? Video out from the kenwood and video in into the factory screen on the MDX dash either by hard wire or by hardwiring in a video rca plug. I will forever be grateful !!!!

Ive spent 3 days now trying to retain all my factory features while changing the stock radio to an aftermarket unit (got most of em, backup cam, stearing wheel controls, fm radio antenna, usb, and aux) but it's just worth it. Hey guys - excellent video. I'm about 80% the way there. I have a 2013 Subaru Impreza +SD NAV. They headunit is a Fujitsu OEM Ten unit. Similar to your video I identified two plugs that would kill the rear camera -- one that kills the signal, the other kills the power entirely (screen goes black). I used a multimeter to identify the 12v reverse wire (which ended up being a part of the wiring bundle that, when removed, made the entire HU power off) and connected it to the purple Reverse In on my Sony XAV-AX100. The part I'm stuck at is identifying camera power in. Using my multimeter, NONE of the wires read ~6v. They're all 10-13v. Could it be that my factory camera is powered by 12v instead of 6v?

Ramy Khalil yes that is possible. That this point you may have to start cutting or unpinning wire to see if the camera powers off.

Hi, I have a Tesla backup camera that I want to hook up to my pioneer radio but I can’t test for voltage cause it’s just the camera itself. I cut the harness and it has four wires. Please help.
