The Ramones brought rock back to its simplistic 50s roots, with infectious melodies and incredibly subversive lyrics, and at incredible volume levels. One of the greatest bands of all times. RIP Joey, Johnny, Dee Dee, and Tommy. You should check out their 1991 Loco Live. A jam packed 80 minutes of awesome.
You know the Buzzcocks?! I was at a Hagfish concert in Deep Ellum. I'm up in the mezzanine and scanning the crowd on the floor. I leapt from my seat, screaming and pointing. I could NOT articulate so I just kept screaming and pointing, lol. Lead singer of Hagfish saw me and looked where I was pointing and he nearly fell out. There in the audience, The Buzzcocks! Old dudes, but punk never dies. Hagfish invited them onstage and they came up and sang a Hagfish song! Then a Buzzcocks song. I nearly died.
"I Wanna Be Sedated" is another classic Ramones song. About 20 years ago I was in the checkout line of my neighborhood Safeway in Tucson when it came on over the Muzak system, much to my simultaneous shock and joy as I sang along to the quizzical stares of the cashier. I have heard it there numerous times since.
You play a live version of a Ramones song, you're going to get a version that is twice or three times faster than the album version. Check out album versions of songs like Rock & Roll High School, Pet Sematary, Pinhead, Sheena Is A Punk Rocker, The KKK Took My Baby Away, and Beat On The Brat.
Ya I remember either Joey or Johnny saying that when they first started and had what they thought was about an hours worth of songs. But when they went to play a live show they would be done in about a half hour. I was in High School in the early 80's and always dressed like I was a Ramone.
Yep, The Ramones didn't fuck around when it came to their live shows. They banged out the setlist as they had shit to do, like "sniffing glue, beating on brats, and remembering rock n roll radio.
@@laudanum669 I read an interview with the owner of CBGB ( Hillie maybe? Too long ago now ) he said they too the stage at exactly 9 o’clock and at 9:30 they were done! They left. Classic.
20 20 24 hours to gooooo ... "I want to be sedated" would be my top pick of their songs, too. As for disregarding musicianship- well - they're not yacht rock, or known for their ballads. It's more about the energy.
you say they play 3 chord songs and blitzkrieg bop is four chords...teenage lobotomy is like 7 chords...i just want to have something to do is three chords...so while some songs have three chords...many do not
When I was 6 years old I wanted to play drums.....got a drum set for Christmas and the Ramones rocket to Russia vinyl and my dad said "listen and play along"......been playing ever since🤘🤘
3 chords max and most songs under 2-3 minutes. You have the iconic look and attitude, that's what punk rock of the 70s what it was. These guys and Sex Pistols were the main groups.
Saw them about 30 times…used to hang backstage them after some concerts…got to know Richard Johnson their photographer and Mitch the Drum Tech….good times
I saw the Ramones so many times between 1977 thru 1980 at CBGBS that almost every video I've seen of them I see myself in the front row, I've even seen myself in photos from articles about them. The stories I could tell.... 😎
I just had an epiphany watching your reaction. My younger, late, brother would say Blitzkrieg Pop really fast as a 6 year old and we just thought it was a noise he was making. Turns out he must have heard this song and was repeating what he heard. My mind is just trying to process this awesomeness right now. Thank you!
This is their big hit, but trust me on this, if you wanna fall in love with The Ramones, check out these songs: 1. I Just Wanna Have Something To Do 2. I Wanna Live 3. We Want The Airwaves 4. Havana Affair 5. Commando 6. Howling At The Moon (Sha-La-La) 7. Bonzo Goes To Bitburg 8. Somebody Put Something In My Drink 9. Pet Sematary 10. I Don't Care
Blitzkrieg Bop was not a hit. The only 3 singles that charted here were "Sheena Is a Punk Rocker" b/w "I Don't Care" "Rockaway Beach" b/w "Locket Love" and "Do You Wanna Dance?" b/w "Babysitter"
@@willieluncheonette5843 Yeah, well, it's the first song one thinks of when thinking about The Ramones. Or maybe, I Wanna Be Sedated. That's a "hit" in my book, when millions of casual listeners know the chorus.
I saw the Ramones live back in 1979 in a small club, then a few more times after that in larger venues. They were very proud of how fast they could get through their set. 30 songs in 60 minutes wasn't unusual for them, lol. But the original version of Blitzkrieg Bop was only 2:12. The fastest live version I'm aware of is 1:35; it's on their last album called "We're Outta Here'". That album has 32 songs and is only a little over 64 minutes long; it was recorded in '96 so the Ramones were in their mid-40s and had been around over 20 years by then.
Remember D. Boon and the band The Minutemen? And early Husker Dus " Land Speed Record?" that stuff was fast and to the point. I love The Ramones but this speeded up version really blows. Check out the original.
@@markrobertdevison1227 blessed we are to have seen them early on- things got bad in the Joey Ramone One Black Glove Years. I actually walked out of a show of theirs many years later!
@@markrobertdevison1227 they SMOKED. I mean 4 real I was already a Little Rock N Roll Chick. Here I am, 13 YEARS OLD, and the Ramones hit the stage. ( Note: I had been complaining all day about " this punk rock stuff" opening this show!!!) I seriously had a Beatle rock moment! From row 15 I ran to that stage and just DUG IT!!! That concert probably inspired the Minneapolis Scene ! All of sudden ANYONE could have a band too!
@@tinfoilmagnolia3134 So, my experience was much different. I saw them as an opening act and the audience was all hard rock. They did not stay long on stage. I wish I had gone to see one of their shows, I'm sure it would have been so much better, but I saw them once in concert. I was 16 I think when I saw them.
This is not the same version as the album version … the Ramones always did their live versions at double speed. But it is the same song and the same performers that you’re used to.
The most rememberable vision of the Ramones,Out of the 8or9 times I've seen them. Was when I caught Johnny's guitar pick straight out of the air. With everyone trying to grab it. At Jack Murphy stadium in San Diego around 1985. So Beat on the Brat.
My first pit was Ramones show. Marky held that drum beat (at double speed from the album version) for about an hour and a half. You could only tell the new song was starting when DeeDee yelled "1234!" I think I lost about 4 pounds in sweat in that mosh, I could not get out of it cause they just didn't stop. Miss those guys. Great times lol
The second time I saw them live, I was standing near the front of the stage when Dee Dee started to count off the next song. I looked up into his face as he belched out a brutal, "Won, two, free, foah!" and on 4 a little fleck of saliva flew from his mouth and struck me in the face. As the song roared to a start he leaned forward and handed me his bass pick, large and white, emblazoned with RAMONES at the top of one side and apologized. I jammed my hand into my pocket and pulled out a guitar pick of my own and handed it to him, "No problem man". I also bought Lars Ulrich a beer at that show, but that's a different story. Rich the Ancient Metal Beast PS after using the pick for a few years, I retired it and turned it into a necklace. RAMONES has faded, but is still visible.
1979 they played at the college I was attending. It was at the student union cafeteria with no stage. Only a couple hundred people were watching but they bring it fast and hard. Sitting right next to them.

"Pinhead","53rd & 3rd","Needles And Pins","We're A Happy Family","I'm Against It","Somebody Put Something In My Drink",or "Psychotherapy" would all be great.
At their first show, at CBGBs no less, the Ramones played their entire set, which consisted of all their songs, in less than 15 minutes. Because there were no breaks between songs aside from the "1-2-3-4" many in the audience were under the impression that they had just played their first song.
Great to hear your voice and watch your reaction, as always. I love the Ramones so much, still one of my all-time favorite bands. My poor parents had to listen to their music pouring out of my bedroom for hours! Try the official video for Psycho Therapy, one of their lesser known videos (MTV rarely showed it and only late at night, as I recall, due to the subject matter, I guess). Also, they have their own film, called Rock 'N Roll High School! You can find the official video for the song Rock 'N Roll High School as well, which has clips of the film. Bottom line, please please PLEASE do more Ramones! With nearly all of the members dead and gone, please help keep their (great) music alive. :)
The Ramones were pioneers of punk rock. Punk is an anti-establishment form of rock with similar roots to metal. Punk rock is basically anti-everything. Songs are short, up tempo, and purposely does not require actual musical ability. There are no solos or anything flashy. You pick up an instrument and play it as loud as you can. It's basically melodic noise. The Ramones are the greatest. This version is at least 2x as fast as the album version. You've heard the album version in songs like National Lampoon's Vacation. Greenday is probably the most well known modern punk band. You could also check out The Sex Pistols, or Dead Milkmen. Grunge music, like Nirvana or Pearl Jam, is sort of a fusion of punk and metal. You can see the punk roots in songs like Smells Like Teen Spirit.
Saw the Ramones is 83 at the Agora in Atlanta right up against the stage in front of Dee Dee. They played like 40+ songs. One of my favorite concert memories.
The Ramones used to play Hammerjacks bar/concert hall in Baltimore (near where they built the new baseball stadium) back in the late 1980s & early 1990s on a regular basis. They were very friendly and would talk to people at the bar before shows. The office I worked in was right next door back then.
They are considered the first true Punk band, picking up were "proto-punk" and garage bands left off, like the Stooges (Iggy Pop), The MC5, The Troggs, and The Seeds. They first performed in 1974 and were a counterpoint to then anthems of Led Zeppelin, The Who, etc. They played 3 chords in 2 minutes with no guitar solos. Check out Ramones video "I Wanna Be Sedated", and "Do You Remember Rock and Roll Radio?", "Sheena is a Punk Rocker", "I Don't Want to Grow Up".
It's nice to finally see someone here that knows the difference between punk and proto-punk. You even recommended good songs for first time listeners. Thank you for commenting, brother! Gabba Gabba Hey!!!
Blitzkrieg is when an attacking army, with lightning speed, concentrates a tank-based attack on a small portion of the line. They quickly punch a hole in the line and pour tanks and infantry though it, taking the enemy from the rear and flanks. Its a ferocious, overwhelming, tactic that was perfected by the Germans in WWII. General Heinz Gudarion was the architect of Blitzkrieg - using Panzer tanks accompanied by air support. I don’t believe the Ramones were advocating Nazi ideas but were using the term to convey raw intensity. When you hear the term blitz in football, well thats where the term comes from - its used a lot in our culture, in lots of other contexts.
I mostly agree with your analysis, but the lyrics clearly stem from war imagery. (I'm not saying you don't get this, but hear me out.} "they're forming in a straight line" "shoot them in the back" "they're going through a tight wind" It seems the last line causes the most confusion. "wind" is pronounced like "wind-up toy" not like "the wind is blowing." I've heard so very professional covers that will pronounce it wrong! A "tight wind" is a sharp turn. I've always assume that it meant the tight turn of a war plane, as it swoop into the battle field, or even for a crash landing. It also means to be in a tight spot, or situation. There's nothing in the lyrics to prove my point that it is a war plane reference, but the three lines together do invoke military imagery. I think the song is about the fans going so crazy, it reminded one of war. It's just that I've heard many people say the use of "blitzkrieg" was a coincidence, and The Ramones were naive to it's origins in warfare. They clearly were not.
@@mickeyrube6623 I think your comments about the war imagery makes sense. I was suggesting that they were not advocating for Nazi ideals (white supremacy, genocide, etc.). Not to put too fine a point on it, the German military forces, under Hitler’s command, used Blitzkrieg against allied forces. I really meant to say that the Ramones reference to Blitzkrieg was not intended to align themselves with Nazi philosophy…

Yep, It's called Blitzkrieg Bop. They always did their songs faster in live shows. Being 1 1/2 hour from NYC, the Ramones came around at least twice a year here, and it was easy to go see them there in NY, or in Boston or Providence, so we got to see them A LOT. Ramones shows were some of the most fun times ever. I miss them so much!
Long live The Ramones…back in the late 80s I went down to San Francisco North Beach area and walked into a club and the freaking Ramones were up on the stage and there was a mosh pit on the dance floor. It was awesome !!, Check out Spider-Man and “I wanna be Sedated “ by the Ramones….

Loved your reaction! ALL their songs are super short. So fun! And yeah the live shoes are wayyyyy faster than what’s on the records. I wish I’d appreciated the Ramones more in the 80s when I was a teen. I was actually fortunate enough to talk to Joey Ramone on the phone on a call in show when he was in our town promoting a record. It sure would be neat to go back and really soak that in. They became one of my favorite bands. The book his brother wrote is fantastic- it’s called I Slept with Joey Ramone. Learned so much.
it's possible to argue endlessly about the roots of Punk Rock, but the Ramones are the true originators of what we today call Punk Rock, and Blitzkrieg Bop was the first song on side one of their first album released in April, 1976, and so this song is Ground Zero for Punk Rock. Their first four albums are all classics and full of great songs, and their next most well known song is "I Wanna Be Sedated". The Ramones were tired of the way rock was going in the mid 1970's... with a softer country rock sound on the one hand, and the bloated pretentiousness of progressive rock on the other hand... and they were trying to dial music back to the short, energetic, radio songs of the 1950's and 60's, but with a harder guitar sound and really sarcastic, dark lyrics.... early Beatles songs were often barely longer than 2 minutes, and sometimes shorter.... but radio was afraid of punk rock and wouldn't play their songs, which only gained a larger audience over time because people like Tony Hawk included this song in his video games, and others put their songs in movies like National Lampoon Vacation, Jimmy Neutron, School of Rock, Pet Sematary, and more recently Spiderman Homecoming. Even though they didn't have large record sales, they were inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame because in their first year of eligibility because they essentially invented a whole new genre of rock music... Punk Rock... and because their first four albums are all classics. For two more great songs, try "Sheena is a Punk Rocker", "Pet Sematary", and "Rockaway Beach".
The Ramones were my very first rock concert in 1979. I was 14, and all the clubs they played in were 18 and up. But they did a free lunchtime show for a local radio station, in front of San Francisco City Hall, so that was my chance. I cut school, took a bus to the city (by myself because my friends were too chicken) and had the time of my life. I wore a homemade T shirt I wrote "I wanna be sedated" on it with magic marker, LOL! That show was professionally recorded and the full audio is on youtube! also a few videos ua-cam.com/video/M7JpamytAws/v-deo.html
Do you remember the stadium where AC/DC played in Argentina? The Ramones played as headliners there in their last concert in South America. They were that big in Argentina. They delivered the entire set of more than 30 song in a little more than an hour and left everybody crying, because we knew it was the last time we could enjoy their energy. 😿
This year's Hanukkah Sessions with Dave Grohl and Kurstin Greg. They cover this song by the Ramones on night two. Fun watch. Great cover. Live shows and recordings are always faster for them. Studio cuts can be easier to translate, I think. Hey Ho lets go. Huge fan of the Ramones. Got to see them once. An even bigger fan of the foo fighters. I've seen them four times. Soft spot and shout out to the Barry Manilow fans. Ive loved him since i was six or seven. Ive see him three times. Night three of the Hanukkah Sessions is a great cover of Copacabana. Love what you do here. Always takes me back. Thank you.
Just watched the movie, Rock n' Roll High School, a few weeks ago which prominently features The Ramones. Somehow missed it when it was originally released. It is worth watching.
Try some of their studio songs. I'd recommend Sheena is a Punk Rocker, or Rockaway Beach. So much fun. These guys would bang out about 25 songs in an hour. Hop on the bus and go to the next show and do it all again the next night. I got to see them 4 times in the 80s. So much energy. I even got to go back stage and meet them because I was in the Navy with a guy who's friend from back home worked for the band. Got to be roadie for a night.
The Ramones were among those at the forefront of the punk movement in the late 70's, and some considered them to be the first true punk group. Sadly the four original members have all since passed away. None of them were actually brothers, but they took on stage names, all with the last name Ramone, as in Dee Dee Ramone, Joey Ramone, etc. Even the later band members like Elvis Ramone did the same thing.
they took ramone from paul mccartney using the name paul ramone to not be noticed and elvis ramone was clem burke from the band blondie...he only played two shows when richie left abruptly
The Ramones deserve more attention, I feel like the ramones have changed my life In a way. My dad told me “Rock away beach” changed his life and the ramones deserve more recognition from this era
You should check out the Roger Corman produced movie Rock n' Roll High School. It stars P.J. Soles as a Ramones mega-fan and features The Ramones themselves. The soundtrack is awesome and it's a great comedy as well. Rock on and peace out.
A GREAT BAN AND A GREAT SONG!! They were the definition of PUNK MUSIC!! They had many great songs like Sheena is a punk rocker, Teenage Lobotomy, Rock and Roll High School, which they also made a movie with the same name 😎
By the 90s, Joey was so sick if doing this he starting blending the words into each other. Kind of singing in a shortcut style. He did it with alot of their early tracks. It was like a whole knew dimension of Ramones.

My All Time favorite band & Rock & Roll Hall of Famers. Everybody knows the tune nowadays from sporting events, but they are the seminal Punk rock group. They did every song fast, loads of their songs were just over 2 minutes.
Ramones are one of the pioneers of American Punk Rock. They played short loud fun songs that were a throwback to early rock n’roll before prog rock and metal took over. This is original American rock n roll
Pure raw energy. I love the Ramones, they're funny too. We're a happy family, we're a happy family, we're a happy family...me, mom and daddy. Sitting here in Queens, eating refried beans, were in all the magazines , gulping down thorazine. We ain't go no friends, our troubles never end, no Christmas cards to send... daddy likes men. I'm against it is a hoot as well.
It's all about context. As rock music became more and more self-indulgent, punk came in and stripped everything back. Very few solos, pure energy. Nowadays we can acknowledge the merits of both the epic rock music of Pink Floyd and Zeppelin, and the straightforward energy and the politically subversive message of punk.
The German military term “blitzkrieg” became well-known during WW2. It means a sudden, intense attack carried out with lightning ⚡️ speed and heavy fire, an earlier version of our postmodern term “shock and awe.” And you can imagine that’s exactly what our boys here were going for!
I saw them live at CUNY Queens College with my buddy Lee Fogel In 1980 or so.During theirs third song of three chord Rock’n’ Roll hey blew out the power in the concert hall. They we’re just a bunch of musicians from Queens. Many of their songs were amusing. They also starred in an amusing movie named Rock”N’Roll High School. It was pretty funny, as the band was a bunch of characters.
The Godfather of Soul; James Brown, The Architect of Rock and Roll; Little Richard, The Father of Metal Rock; Black Sabbath, The Innovators of Punk Rock; The Ramones.
I absolutely LOVE the Ramones but there was punk music long before they were around. The MC5 in the 60's and Iggy Pop and the Stooges in the late 60s/early 70s started the ball rolling.
There was nothing better than the Ramones in NY city Ritz in the 80s loud Raw and fast 1234 was the way you knew they started playing another song...the audience was in a Frenzy....
Classic first wave New York 70s punk. The general rule at that time was 3 chords max, lyrics yelled or screamed over a fast beat, and a song ideally under 2 minutes. Punk grew out of British pub rock as an alternative to prog rock and lengthy, overproduced tracks, among other things. Check out 'I Wanna Be Sedated', 'Sheena Is A Punk Rocker', 'Rock n Roll High School'. Also look into the Sex Pistols, the Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, and the Damned for starters--all great bands. I remember the first time hearing the Ramones as a freshman in high school. Great stuff! Still got a punk heart to this day.
I love the Ramones. They took the name because it was the pseudonym that Paul McCartney used to sign in at hotels. I’ve seen them three times that I remember, and possibly a fourth that I’m a bit foggy on. 👀 The first time I saw them, they blew the power in the club during their second or third song. Ha. The second time I saw them, my friend and I got there really early and stood right up against the stage between Johnny and Joey. That night we sang/screamed “Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment” in my car the entire drive home. “The KKK Took My Baby Away” is a favorite. “Commando” is a fun one. I also love “Psychotherapy”, too. Ha. But I really recommend “I Want You Around”. Joey sings that to PJ Soles in their movie. It’s a sweet song and a great movie scene. Other popular songs: “Sheena is a Punk Rocker”, “Rockaway Beach”, “I Wanna Be Sedated”, “Pet Sematary” (Stephen King asked them to do a song for the movie), “Do You Remember Rock and Roll Radio” (produced by the legendary Phil Spector”), “53rd and 3rd”, “Do You Wanna Dance” (cover), “Needles and Pins” (cover), “Teenage Lobotomy”… there’s so many. Lemmy of Motörhead liked them so much, he wrote a song about them: “R.A.M.O.N.E.S.”. It still blows my mind that Joey would only have been 70 if lymphoma hadn’t taken him. If they were still playing, I’d still be going to their shows. But they probably wouldn’t still be together. Too much hate between Johnny and Joey. And I always got the feeling the rest of the band couldn’t deal with Joey’s OCD and other issues. They were a great band. I miss them so much. Looking forward to the movie with Pete Davidson playing Joey (if it ever gets made). I love your reaction. Thank you so much for getting to them. 💜💜💜

"Pet Sematary", "Sheena Is A Punk Rocker", "I Wanna Be Sedated"!!!!❤❤❤❤
"Beat On The Brat"!
Pet Sematary is criminally undervalued. That's my Halloween karaoke jam.
The Ramones were putting out raw music. Rejecting the over produced songs of that time. My favorite is I Want To Be Sedated 😎 it’s a good one!
...or rejecting musicianship, how ever you wanna say it😋

Priceless reaction. Saw them accidental. Their entire show was 90 mins, and frenetic. Amazing. All their songs are 3 mins or less.
It's "Blitzkrieg Bop" not Pop. The Ramones were THE New York punk band in the 70s & 80s. They only knew like 3 chords but that never slowed them down.
3 chords max and most songs under 2-3 minutes. You have the iconic look and attitude, that's what punk rock of the 70s what it was. These guys and Sex Pistols were the main groups.
Three chords and the truth…..🤨

I saw the Ramones so many times between 1977 thru 1980 at CBGBS that almost every video I've seen of them I see myself in the front row, I've even seen myself in photos from articles about them. The stories I could tell.... 😎
Yass here for it!! I watched the Rock and Roll High School movie so many times...just like Valley Girl in the 80s.
Thank you!

I also saw them back in '79.

I wish I had gone to see one of their shows, I'm sure it would have been so much better, but I saw them once in concert. I was 16 I think when I saw them.
This is not the same version as the album version … the Ramones always did their live versions at double speed. But it is the same song and the same performers that you’re used to.
They could take a 45 minute album and play it live in 20 minutes top😂
Blitzkrieg: an intense military campaign intended to bring about a swift victory. Kind of what the Ramones did to kick ass on pop music at the time.
Translates to "lightning war" in german
Rich the Ancient Metal Beast
PS after using the pick for a few years, I retired it and turned it into a necklace. RAMONES has faded, but is still visible.
That's way cool! Happy New Year, man!

1979 they played at the college I was attending. It was at the student union cafeteria with no stage. Only a couple hundred people were watching but they bring it fast and hard. Sitting right next to them.
4 guys, 3 chords, 2 minutes... It's the Ramones!
I read a review of a show where the writer said it was " music to sniff glue by."
The Ramones stripped all the chrome off the music.
They famously played all their songs live twice the speed and didn't have a gap between songs...just the drummer counting in for the next.

At their first show, at CBGBs no less, the Ramones played their entire set, which consisted of all their songs, in less than 15 minutes. Because there were no breaks between songs aside from the "1-2-3-4" many in the audience were under the impression that they had just played their first song.
Yes. I saw them live and they never took a break and began each song with 1234.
Great to hear your voice and watch your reaction, as always. I love the Ramones so much, still one of my all-time favorite bands.
As Joey Ramone said, “If you’re not in it, you’re out of it”.
The best description of the Ramones, bubble gum pop played at the speed and sound of a jet engine
Thank you for reacting to my favorite music genre-wish you would do more.
I mostly agree with your analysis, but the lyrics clearly stem from war imagery. (I'm not saying you don't get this, but hear me out.}
"they're forming in a straight line"
"shoot them in the back"
"they're going through a tight wind"
It seems the last line causes the most confusion.
"wind" is pronounced like "wind-up toy" not like "the wind is blowing."
I've heard so very professional covers that will pronounce it wrong!

I heart Pet Semetary, the song they did for Stephen King's film also, I don't Wanna Grow Up, their Tom Waits cover.
