The Ramones have been my favourite band since I was 10 years old. So, I feel confident enough to explain my thoughts on thsi song. Oddly enough, the original name of the song was "Animal Hop", and written by their drummer Tommy. He just thought the band could use a fun chant song, similar to the Bay City Rollers "Saturday Night". Dee Dee (bass player), grew up as an American Army brat in Germany during the 50s and early 60s. He told Tommy to change the line "they're shouting in the back now" to "Shoot'em in the back now" and the title to "Blitzkrieg Bop". It was a pure childish joke, and nothing more. Like a kid drawing bad things in class to piss people off. That was just the humor of Dee Dee Ramone. It's the perfect example of how the band wanted to be huge hit makers, but could never be cause the band members were absolutely insane. That's the true charm of the Ramones; punk is considered to be this "anti-establishment" music, played by outsiders. But the blueprint of punk really started with the Ramones (more-so than the Stooges, more-so than the Dolls, etc), and The Ramones were NATURALLY outsiders, but wanted to be the biggest band in the world. They thought they could change the world withonly 4/4 beats and barre chords. They kickstarted the punk movement because of their own naivety. Everyone recognizes this song now, and the Ramones name - but during their tenure, nobody took them seriously. They were considered dumb untalented losers (none of which was true of course), and so was their fanbase. They are the true underdog story. Unfortunately it was only in the early 2000s when the band members all started dying that they finally started being taking seriously for their cultural impact. Blitzkrieg Bop is really just about going out to a show and having fun with friends. There's no deep political message to it. They were just batshit crazy. The politics with punk does not apply to the Ramones. Half of the band voted Republican. Politics with punk really started with UK bands (Detroit's MC5 can be argued, but they were before punk and not recognized as punk band until after the fact) and eventually made its way back to America with the 2nd wave groups, mainly from the California area (Dead Kennedys, Avengers, etc).

I'm a muso, and have always had respect for The Ramones, but never really knew too mcuh about them nor had I ever done any sort of deep dive into them until the last 3 or 4 months.... I'm loving it ... and my kids are into them too now .... Their sense of humour and general silliness, their simplistic genius, their driving rock, 3 min songs, Johnny Ramone's down stroke bar chords .. etc etc .... loving it all .... Maybe you could tell me if this is true or not, but I saw a documentary that said as the toured the States, new bands would pop up after they left each town, some of them going on to have success. It was just an anecdotal account, but whoever said it in this documentary seemed to truly believe it or have seen it... Certainly their approach to music and each other, combined with their live performances, I can imagine would have inspired a lot of young people to quit their job and form a band the very next day - What they were doing just looked that easy - of course it wasn't ... simple ain't always easy, despite the fact they were unique and creating their own music subtilties .... I know they inspired musicians and music styles, but I'm talking about the inspiring people to actually form a band and give music a go, and then being able to almost mark the formation of new bands on a map that followed their tour paths ... do you think there's any truth to this or have you heard it being said as well ??

Your wife is right. Punk rock is fun and dance kind of rock music lol ! Upbeat and catchy yet dark kind of lyrics. Def been on commercials, TV shows, sporting events, skating rinks, dance clubs. My kids like this band and song, too when they were little ha!
Don't mistake dark lyrics for over the top satire. A number of their songs centered around ww2 Germany, mainly because Dee Dee spent a good part of his childhood there as an army brat. The band was half Jewish, and all their songs concentrated on the absurdity of what it meant to be "normal" as they saw themselves and were seen as freaks. It's easy to read lyrics and find context that might seem dark, but they were a very tongue in cheek band. The true test, as you mention, is whether your kids like it. Idk any kid who's ever heard Ramones and didn't start jumping around lol.
The hey Ho let’s go…leading into the first verse, was my ringtone for many years. A decade after I stopped using it, it started showing up in commercials, or commercials for movies… I’d still look at my phone.
Not this one. The most legit meaning seems to be about a kid at a concert. I read few books saying some lyrics got changed(during recording sessions) and that they just wanted to on the radio. They legit saw themselves as a pop band like the Bay City rollers. But more Iggy Pop influenced. I think it was mentioned in Treat me like Dirty A Cultural Dictionary of Punk And in Don Letts documentary Punk Attitude.
Great band - they mixed old-style rock'n'roll with punk and a lot of energy. The form of this song is probably infleuenced by an early 1960s song "I Fought the Law (But the Law Won)", which was later covered by British punk band The Clash.
There’s lots of ‘happy’ punk bands like - Dead Milkmen (check out their song ‘Punk Rock Girl’) , or Toy Dolls ( check out their version of ‘Livin La Vida Loca’)

I saw these guys open for Black Sabbath after Sabbath dropped Van Halen from their tour for constantly bad mouthing them in the press. Sabbath wanted someone who would appreciate the opportunity. It was Van Halen's first big tour but David Lee Roth couldn't stop talking crap about "Blowing Sabbath off the stage" lol. I had seen them with Valen earlier that year and was shocked when "Ramones" walked out! They were out of their element but did a great job!👍👍
Those were very tough gigs for punk bands and non-classic rock bands opening up for a big name rock band. The crowds would boo incessantly and throw things at the punk/alternative bands without mercy and without giving them a chance. The headliners weren't going to come out any earlier because of that, so there was no real benefit to the crowd anyway. Oh well.

I think Sabbath were so tired of each other that it came through, a lot. But given who they were, and the fact that VH's first name "Rat Salad" was after a Sabbath song, respect was in order. Well, the boos were nothing, it was all the shit being thrown at them that made them stop early... But yes, Metalica didn't come right out, they came out when they were supposed to. Most of the metalheads just loved giving non-metal bands shit... Just because they weren't playing METAL! Although, 'Van Hagar' didn't get any boos, or shit thrown at them. Bass player Dee Dee Ramone wrote most of their lyrics. He was a junkie for most of his time in the band. He had a very twisted view of things. He spent part of his childhood in Germany as his father was stationed in Germany and his mother was a German citizen. For a time they lived in West Berlin. He wrote a lot of twisted tunes with dark humor which involved Nazi themes. The family moved back to New York City and that's where Dee Dee (Doug Colvin) got his start playing in bands. He sometimes wrote openly about addiction, again using dark humor, and some of the time he spent working as a male prostitute on 53rd and 3rd to support his habit (which also became one of his songs). He co-wrote the song "Chinese Rocks" with New York Dolls/Heartbreakers guitarist Johnny Thunders which was about buying heroin and the overall junkie lifestyle. Thunders later died from a heroin overdose in the early 1980s. "I'm living on chines rock, all my best things are in hock, i'm living on chinese rock, everything is in the pawn shop".
Tommy Ramone wrote the song as his own celebration of rock fandom. “It was basically about a few kids going to a concert,” he explains, “getting away from it all and having a great time. I happened to pick up Joey Ramone’s guitar, a two-string guitar with A and E strings tuned to a fifth. And I started bashing away on it and came up with the chords.” “The original title of the song was Animal Hop. Dee Dee came up with Blitzkrieg Bop because he wanted to Ramones-ize it. Hey, Ramones considered themselves a rock band, so, yeah! I'm sure Sweet's "Ballroom Blitz" played a role in the lyric choice. Amazing rawness and energy, counter to the accepted radio-play norms back then... GREAT stuff!
Bay City Rollers "Saturday Night" chant was also what they were aiming for on this song. And yes, they loved Sweet and any other high energy rock n roll. My favorite band of all time.

A few UK bands from the Punk era you should check out that you've seemed to overlook... Killing Joke, The Damned, The Starnglers, Siouxsie & the Banshees, Public Image Ltd, Throbbing Gristle... USA bands; Suicide, The Residents, Television.
One thing that trips me out is, I saw this documentary on Funk about Parliament and they showed how Funk and Punk started from the same kind of origin, and that Funk and Punk quickly diverged but somehow had similar roots.
The song is about all the elements you always get at gigs, those who go for a good time, and those who stay back, looking for trouble; from heckling to throwing bottles, to attacking the real fans.
Blitzkrieg is German for lightning war and was a tactic used by the Nazis in WWII. The lyrics seem to be either conrasting, conflating or maybe both, the behaviour of a crowd at a gig and those at a Nazi rally. It's a bit obscure and vague really. Although punk bands of this era did sometimes flirt with Nazi imagery, it was for shock value. I personally think the "shoot 'em in the back now" line is The Ramones preferred way of dealing with Nazis.
If you're ever interested in hearing about some punk history, check out Wayne Kramer's lecture at Loyola University on their UA-cam channel. The video is titled "Wayne Kramer (of MC5) Lecture - On MC5 and the Evolution of Pop Music." Kramer was the guitarist for the MC5, which was a rock band out of Detroit long ago. They're considered one of the godfathers of punk (along with Ramones, Clash, Sex Pistols, etc.) even though they didn't consider themselves as punk back then lol. His story is pretty fascinating. The MC5 self-destructed and broke up eventually. They used to hang out with Black Panthers and are still friends with a lot of them. Anyway, Kramer also talked about how back when he was growing up, there was really no such thing as a rock station, a rap station, etc. You'd basically listen to the radio, and they might play The Who followed by R&B followed by blues or jazz, etc. They care more about whether a song sounded good than whether it was a particular type of song.
Also, if you want to check out some MC5, check out Ramblin' Rose and another song called Kick Out the Jams (the song that got them banned from radio). Henry Rollins (formerly of Black Flag) and the Bad Brains later did a great cover of Kick Out the Jams too.

In essence “Push faster”, which was mainly the the ethos of German offensive during WWII which caught France and Italy by surprise. But then again they were supplying Methamphetamines to their soldiers. “Shoot them in the back” I think is a metaphor to piling people in the back seats of a car to a show.

You are totally right that fans might not really listen to the lyrics if a tune is fun to dance to! David Bowie had a hit song that had a refrain that with something that I thought was sort of inappropriate, then, and that I think women might have big problem with, in this century, back 1975 ish. Bowie was such a big star that I never said how I felt about the lyrics ~~ to anyone, actually. Bowie, was a huge star and had a huge, crazy stage persona, “Ziggy Stardust,” great band. I remember that he was married to a beautiful model, had children, and sang Christmas songs with Bing Crosby in 80’s, too. I believe he was a respected musician who died fairly young. I’ll get back to you when I remember the name of the tune to which I was referring…or perhaps another one of your fans might remember which tune I was referencing. Some parents were quite negative about the lyrics and strong rhythm that rock had. Those folks were sort of laughed about. Maybe they had a valid point, actually.

Metallica had a song on kill em all about the actual blitzkrieg. The Nazis called it lightening war, which is what it translates too. It was a new way of shock attacking their enemies. You should check that out too! The Metallica song I mean. It was a cover by some euro group of the same name.
The Germans themselves never once used the term ‘Blitzkrieg’ It was a term invented by allied propaganda to represent general offensive tactics used by the Germans during the war
im bet by the time your about halfway through your introduction to the punk genre your be a fan. A huge percentage of punk bands (especially the early punk bands) are speaking about current and past Political, Social and cultural issues that bring negativity onto the world. Really dive into the lyrics if possible. When you compare what punk has to say compared to other genre's past and present it makes punkers look much more intelligent then the rest. Enjoy

Yes, that s why Ramones were that unique. Not rarely using "Kindergarten rhymes or phrases". Often weren t taken seriously, especially at the start. But also combining Kids rhymes along with mentioning Nazi topics here and there made their songs even more dynamite. An usual method used and imitated by many further Bands like the Pistols for example. Regarding Ramones it first appears to be a bitter pill to swallow. ...and from an artistic standpoint that s exactly how it s supposed to be. But once realizing that Ramones singer was jewish it became an even more exciting Band. Aside from struggles within the band, not rarely also caused by political arguments. came out to play, with Metalica coming up next... Well, the boos were nothing, it was all the shit being thrown at them that made them stop early...
But yes, Metalica didn't come right out, they came out when they were supposed to.
Most of the metalheads just loved giving non-metal bands shit... Just because they weren't playing METAL! Although, 'Van Hagar' didn't get any boos, or shit thrown at them.
I think Kingdom Come was getting shit because they had a hit song, that sounded like a Zeppelin rip-off.

Bass player Dee Dee Ramone wrote most of their lyrics. He was a junkie for most of his time in the band. He had a very twisted view of things. He spent part of his childhood in Germany as his father was stationed in Germany and his mother was a German citizen. For a time they lived in West Berlin. He wrote a lot of twisted tunes with dark humor which involved Nazi themes. The family moved back to New York City and that's where Dee Dee (Doug Colvin) got his start playing in bands. He sometimes wrote openly about addiction, again using dark humor, and some of the time he spent working as a male prostitute on 53rd and 3rd to support his habit (which also became one of his songs). He co-wrote the song "Chinese Rocks" with New York Dolls/Heartbreakers guitarist Johnny Thunders which was about buying heroin and the overall junkie lifestyle. Thunders later died from a heroin overdose in the early 1980s. "I'm living on chines rock, all my best things are in hock, i'm living on chinese rock, everything is in the pawn shop".

A few UK bands from the Punk era you should check out that you've seemed to overlook... Killing Joke, The Damned, The Starnglers, Siouxsie & the Banshees, Public Image Ltd, Throbbing Gristle... USA bands; Suicide, The Residents, Television.
One thing that trips me out is, I saw this documentary on Funk about Parliament and they showed how Funk and Punk started from the same kind of origin, and that Funk and Punk quickly diverged but somehow had similar roots.
Privileged to see them twice in concert back in the day.

Blitzkrieg is German for lightning war and was a tactic used by the Nazis in WWII. The lyrics seem to be either conrasting, conflating or maybe both, the behaviour of a crowd at a gig and those at a Nazi rally. It's a bit obscure and vague really. Although punk bands of this era did sometimes flirt with Nazi imagery, it was for shock value. I personally think the "shoot 'em in the back now" line is The Ramones preferred way of dealing with Nazis.

If you're ever interested in hearing about some punk history, check out Wayne Kramer's lecture at Loyola University on their UA-cam channel. The video is titled "Wayne Kramer (of MC5) Lecture - On MC5 and the Evolution of Pop Music." Kramer was the guitarist for the MC5, which was a rock band out of Detroit long ago. They're considered one of the godfathers of punk (along with Ramones, Clash, Sex Pistols, etc.) even though they didn't consider themselves as punk back then lol.
His story is pretty fascinating. The MC5 self-destructed and broke up eventually. They used to hang out with Black Panthers and are still friends with a lot of them. Anyway, Kramer also talked about how back when he was growing up, there was really no such thing as a rock station, a rap station, etc. You'd basically listen to the radio, and they might play The Who followed by R&B followed by blues or jazz, etc. They care more about whether a song sounded good than whether it was a particular type of song.
Also, if you want to check out some MC5, check out Ramblin' Rose and another song called Kick Out the Jams (the song that got them banned from radio). Henry Rollins (formerly of Black Flag) and the Bad Brains later did a great cover of Kick Out the Jams too.

In essence “Push faster”, which was mainly the the ethos of German offensive during WWII which caught France and Italy by surprise. But then again they were supplying Methamphetamines to their soldiers. “Shoot them in the back” I think is a metaphor to piling people in the back seats of a car to a show.

A huge percentage of punk bands (especially the early punk bands) are speaking about current and past Political, Social and cultural issues that bring negativity onto the world. Really dive into the lyrics if possible. When you compare what punk has to say compared to other genre's past and present it makes punkers look much more intelligent then the rest. Enjoy

the blitz was what the Brits called being bombed by the Germans in WW2 and we ended up popularly calling the German combined arms tactics of WW2 "the blitzkrieg" which means 'lightening war'

Yes, that s why Ramones were that unique. Not rarely using "Kindergarten rhymes or phrases". Often weren t taken seriously, especially at the start. But also combining Kids rhymes along with mentioning Nazi topics here and there made their songs even more dynamite. An usual method used and imitated by many further Bands like the Pistols for example. Regarding Ramones it first appears to be a bitter pill to swallow. ...and from an artistic standpoint that s exactly how it s supposed to be. But once realizing that Ramones singer was jewish it became an even more exciting Band. Aside from struggles within the band, not rarely also caused by political arguments.
