He would have been one of the absolute best had he lived. He, like Eddie Van Halen, was inventing the techniques that all of the other guys would later use to become the absolute shredders. Had he had more time on this Earth he would have dominated with both technical prowess and his musicality. Most shredders have notes and technique yet lack the music, which is the most important part.

He was labeled the most wicked man alive.

Randy was such a badass on guitar that Jackson made 4 prototype guitars just for him. Dozens of other famous guitarists play or played on "Jackson Rhoads" type guitars over the years, mostly metal guitarists. Several have even made their own modifications to the JR design. RIP.

    • @BigMateo24

I know 2 of those prototypes made their way to Randy before his death, the third I thought was assembled after Randys death and put up for display and stolen at the Namm show in '83 I think. I didn't know there was a 4th guitar.

    • @shaitanlavey

@@BigMateo24 The third prototype was accidentally sold at Namm, not stolen. The fourth was what became the signature model for the line of guitars eventually sold to the public after Rhoads died (black Concorde with gold hardware). Randy commissioned all 4 but only lived to play on 2 of them.

I’ve got an ‘84 Jackson Rhoads, one of the earliest production models, I’ve always been amazed that the neck feels exactly like my favorite guitar, my ‘77 Les Paul Deluxe. During a Q and A with Grover Jackson on the Seymour Duncan forum I mentioned that to him, he told me they copied Randy’s Les Paul Custom neck profile, and all those early Rhoads models have that neck shape. Many a kid from Burbank and the vicinity took music lessons there. It's still there, I believe. Kelle gives tours by appointment, or he did. I knew his sister, Kathy Rhoads D'Argenzio (I am sure she doesn't remember me.) and spoke to Randy a couple of times. He wanted me to encourage my late brother, who was a Jazz Trumpet and Flugelhorn player not to give up. Now ask what would his teacher have done?
Terms like virtuoso, like savant, yes they all apply and more to Randy.

That was performed in a small TV studio filmed just outside of Rochester New York for a kind of cheesy lat night show, while they were on tour in support of the new Blizzard of Ozz album that had just been released. It's one of the most fortuitous things to have happened in the whole Ozzy/Randy Rhoads story as to this day it remains as one of the best examples of Randy's live playing, at least visually. As far as the polka dots, you can also see that on his guitar the fret markers are bow ties. Both of these things are call backs to his days in the original Quiet Riot (which he formed with Kevin Dubrow) and the polka dotted vest and bowties he wore on stage back then. Randy was the best. Truly. Great person. Hilarious. Great teacher. Great player. RIP brother.
