The Ramones drew a lot of inspiration from 40/50s do-wop and 60s surf rock. They had a fresh sound and, with Lou Reed and others, were at the forefront of modern Punk.
"I Wanna be Sedated" and "Rock-n-roll High School". The Ramones were one the first punk bands in the US... 3 chords, loud, and crazy live shows with 30 2-minute songs. They motivated so many bands with minimasl musical skill to express themselves. They were true legends and trailblazers.
"Sheena..." is one of the poppiest songs in the Ramones catalog (I can't think of one that beats it off the top of my head). It is an homage to their early influences, especially the Beach Boys and their immediate contemporaries.
The Ramones had many influences, including The Beatles, Elvis Presley and The Beach Boys. They took those sounds and sped them up and made the music move faster, hence 2 1/2 or 3 minute songs, with simple lyrics. They were better musicians than many punk bands, got to see them four times over the years, only the drummers changed. Johnny, DeeDee and Joey were always there. Here are a few to try: Rock and Roll High School, Cretin Hop, Pinhead, We're A Happy Family, Do You Remember Rock and Roll Radio? and Lobotomy. Go.
1984, I had the opportunity to work at LA' mours east Queens NY. The very first show I worked was the legendary Ramones. I had the chance to go back stage to stock the bar, and the Ramones were rehearing there set of songs that they played that night. When the 70's scene came along, Led Zeppelin w/ their 'extended' songs and complex arrangements were in popular demand... so u had artists like Uriah Heep, Yes, Deep Purple, early Genesis, E.L.P. etc... and The Ramones hated that approach. They wanted a return to those simple, catchy tunes... and since they could not emulate Jimmy Page or John Bonham... they played their instruments w/ only the basic skills and tried to emulate that old sound that they loved... That's how u got short, punchy songs like 'Sheena is a punk rocker'... 'Judy is a punk'... 'Blitzkrieg bop'... etc... But in 1977, the public at large hated that sound in the disco era. However, in the UK and Europe, their sound started a revolution and created the punk rock scene there.

Punk is much more polylithic genre-wise than it has been projected. There are so many different types. One band Metallica idolized were The Misfits, whose tempo changes, styles and lyrics are a more primitive, less technical version of what you hear in Metallica's music. Since The Misfits are renowned for being the original and quintessential "horror punk" band, it's easy to see how Metallica's music and themes are derivative of those found in the music of the Misfits. You could also find that Metallica's style was heavily influenced by the rise of 80's British hardcore punk bands like GBH, Exploited and the UK Subs.
Lol! I never thought of that. Ramones do sound like The Beach Boys on steroids. Happy sounding punk. It's like Weezer is too for alternative rock. Happy sounding grungy alt rock. Maybe the surf rock style music, melodic doo wop style singing. Just like the Beach Boys. Punk rock, hardcore thrash, and hip hop and other music are music skaters like to skate to. Or surfing on surfboards as well for that matter! Punk kind of has old rockabilly roots from the '50s and '60s. Elvis Pressley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, etc. The the garage rock/proto punk roots of the '60s/'70s like MC5, Velvet Underground, The Stooges (Iggy Pop), etc. Yall have heard Ramones at sporting events, tv, etc. Brad. Maybe it sounds like "Good Vibration" or "Surfin' USA" from The Beach Boys?

I saw them in the later 70s. Tons of energy , no time between tunes. Just 1-2-3-4 !!! The Ramones sounded like a big fun cartoon. Motorhead even did a song about them.
The Ramones - 4 great guys; 4 great chords! I love the Ramones - but that old joke is true. The elder statesmen of punk. Unfortunately, the only time I ever saw them live was not a fantastic show. I think it was around 1993 or so in a small club in Philly. Joey ran out on stage and leapt into the air with a ton of energy and landed in a cool pose. He then didn't move another muscle for the entire rest of the show -- which lasted around 35 minutes. Even so - these guys are legends, and I'm glad I got a chance to see them.
Two fun Ramones things - Lemmy Kilmeister (Motorhead) wrote R.A.M.O.N.E.S. as an appreciation for the band. They made an excellent cover and included it in many performances. You could compare both versions. Second, one of my fav Ramones songs is different than most of their songs. The Crusher - ua-cam.com/video/jJKhed1NdaI/v-deo.html

And you haven't really gotten a handle on the RAMONES until you've had 53rd and 3rd plus commando run you through the ears like a dagger ⚔️
Oh now I feel fecking old as dirt. Love you guys majorly, never stop being you.
Yes!!! This makes me so happy. More Ramones please!!
'Beat on the Brat with a Baseball Bat', 'Teenage Lobotomy', anything, really.
53rd and 3rd...beat on the brat....we're a happy family///
Hüsker Dü is another band that‘s surely worth listening to. Songs like New Day Rising, The Girl Who Lives On Heaven Hill, Pink Turns To Blue or Celebrated Summer come to my mind
yes!
Also, Diane, Could You Be The One, Don't Want To Know If You Are Lonely and Makes No Sense At All...
Could You Be The One?
FINALLYYYY!!! Ramones is my fav band and been since i was 11
One of the OG bands of punk and helped make it more mainstream.
Most early Ramone shows were around 20-25 minutes, thats for a set of about 15-17 songs. Everything under 2 minutes.
It was like a non stop assault.❤
Karen O for modern day punk group Yeah Yeah Yeahs covered this song too. Check out Yeah Yeah Yeahs. They are good.
I saw them in the later 70s. Tons of energy , no time between tunes. Just 1-2-3-4 !!! The Ramones sounded like a big fun cartoon. Motorhead even did a song about them.
Where are you guys are doing punk rock now! hell yeah. This is the scene I grew up in.
Ramones are the band of my teenage, love.
The Ramones basically were trying to revive 50s rock.
that was the song that took me to the punk sound
They do a great cover of the Ronettes " baby I love you"
I'm just gonna say you can never have enough Ramones. I'd be a happy hombre if you'd react to Judy Is a Punk
I Want To Be Sedated is my favorite song by the Ramones 😎😜

Ramones have a HUGE Beach Boys influence.
I think your thinking of “cmon everybody” song. Love the Ramones
I saw them live about 10 or 15 years ago
Man they were good
Yaaay! I LOOOVE the Ramones!!! Please keep going with them!
Ramones are one of my favorite bands. You need to check out their movie Rock n Roll High School.
Seen Ramones many times 90s, Roxy, Greek Theater, Palladium, many more.
Brad maybe this "Doo doo doo doo doo" Heartbreaker Rolling Stones
They often use Ramones tunes in Spide-rman films
Ramones catalog is like the menu at In’N’Out Burger, not a ton of variety but everything hits the spot. Try “It’s not my place (in the 9 to 5 world)”….nice riff about a minute and a half in.
