I was a metal fan way back when.... Sabbath, Ozzy, Maiden etc. I moved to Okinawa Japan in '85 and someone handed me Ride The Lightning. I put it on the turntable, put on the good headphones....and after the harpsichord intro to Fight Fire with Fire, I was shocked and had to look at the stereo. What the fuck was that?!?!?! Life was never the same and to this day, I recall that moment, hearing Metallica for the 1st time, as if it were a mere week ago.

Marcus Weaver James is an amazing story teller. Storytelling separates the good from the great. Best 4-pc band, I think, in the history of rock music. There are others who have done individual things better perhaps. But Metallica forced the world to pay attention through sheer tenacity, honesty, and creativity. Not 1 band even close.

Agree with The Blue Savior the studio version should be the introduction to almost all songs for the reasons given, then later try the live version to feel the passion and energy of the crowds and the joy of a band that truly loves what they do.

There are two songs and an album that I'd call the exceptions to that rule.... 'The Thing That Should Not Be', 'Harvester of Sorrow', and St. Anger. The first two move from good to frickin' awesome when played live... the studio versions of both are kind of flattened. St. Anger's studio album is just unsalvageable; BUT there are good songs on it and once they figured out how to play them live with some changes to structure and not having that ear-wrenching ringing unlocked snare drum... that's just the way to get to those songs, the live performances.
Everything else, yeah... hit the studio version first, then grab a live performance to see the difference. Seattle '89 and Moscow '91 are fantastic sources for the early work.

My fav Metallica song of all. A lot of thier songs have deep meanings and this one is one of the best. A song about depression and suicide, whenever I used to get depressed and thought the world would be better off without me I would listen to this and cry. Somehow it always made me think there is something out there for me. Got me through a lot growing up

I am dying from brain tumors and lung cancer. I can absolutely relate to wanting to fade to black. Going on 8 years from surviving my first brain tumor. Lucang cancer was before the brain tumors causing them. I’ve been fighting a death sentence ever since. I’m still here. I promised my son, then 9, I wouldn’t dye on him. He’ll be 18 in October. I’ve survived 28 hours of brain surgery, 33 total cancer surgery hours to date. I just turned 52. Always Keep Rockin!!! Keeps your soul alive!!!
