I am kinda the opposite. I usually don't get too caught up in people focusing on the lyrics, at least on the first reaction. I just want them to pay attention to the music more so than the lyrics. I remember it wasn't till my third listen where I actually payed attention to the lyrics, which are also great, and enjoyed it a bit more. It just goes to show what amazing music Metallica made. What I love about rock/metal.

IMO the part from 5:30 to 6:30 is the most brutal metal bit EVER. It doesn' matter how hard the next Burzum or Slipknot tries, that bit is PURE. Hetfield's harsh, scratching voice, the pure thump of the guitars, the double bass.. everything is perfection in there.

Me as well. It was 1987 and I was with my friends hanging out in my friends bedroom and my friend Ben popped And Justice For All into the tape player and I was awestruck. I was an instant fan. When we got around to One, I made them play it several times because I was so hooked on the song and loved it (still do).

The song was based off the story/movie "Johnny Got His Gun"(which Metallica bought the rights to) and the clips are from the movie - The Story: Joe Bonham, a young American soldier serving in World War I, awakens in a hospital bed after being caught in the blast of an exploding artillery shell. He gradually realizes that he has lost his arms, legs, and all of his face (including his eyes, ears, teeth, and tongue), but that his mind functions perfectly, leaving him a prisoner in his own body. Joe later attempts suicide by suffocation, but finds that he has had a tracheotomy that he can neither remove nor control. At first Joe wishes to die, but he later decides that he desires to be placed in a glass box and toured around the country in order to show others the true horrors of war. Joe successfully communicates these desires with military officials after months and months of banging his head on his pillow in Morse code. However, he realizes that the military will not grant his wishes, as it is "against regulations". It is implied that he will live the rest of his natural life in his condition. As Joe drifts between reality and fantasy, he remembers his old life with his family and girlfriend, and reflects upon the myths and realities of war. I spent 500 on floor tickets for my me and my mom. When they played this song they had pictures of WW1 soldiers displaying on these floating canvas cubes during the "pretty" half of the song, and images of tanks, explosions, men in gas masks with bayonets fixed, artillery, machine guns, and even pictures of guys missing legs and parts of their face during the "metal" half. It was so fucking awesome

He was blacklisted in Hollywood during the McCarthy-era scandal, but worked under pseudonyms making movies that raised social awareness and are considered some of the best of all time (while under the pseudonym). I won't spoil the movie with what ultimately happened. But read "Johnny Got His Gun" by Dalton Trumbo, then learn about the man. Peace!!!

This song along with divine intervention saved me from committing suicide when I was a teenager many moons ago. I got to meet them in 2009 in Cleveland Ohio . It was great being able to thank Lars and James and James gave me his guitar pick and Lars asked if there was a song they wanted me to have them put in their set. So awesome
I saw the movie of Johnny Got his Gun. The most horrifying part is that he lived without living and the doctors would not allow him the dignity of death.
i watch the movie when i was 11, it gave me nightmares for months, i remember having a mini panick attack when he was making an imaginary calendar in his mind, only to fuck up the count.

That only happens in the movie. In the book, there is a sympathetic nurse, but she doesn't try to kill him. The poor guy just "lives" without really living. Very depressing book and movie.

I was into pop metal like Poison, Motley Crue, etc. I didn't like the song right away. I read Johnny Got His Gun in junior high when I found out it was the inspiration for the song. It was anti war and basically advocated for euthanasia. The fictional character could recall life before his horrible injuries. He was psychologically tortured due to being trapped in his broken body. Would have been better off without the medical intervention.
Metallica was at their absolute peak when they put out this album...and this album set a whole new bar for metal. It was super fast and super technical...and tight! And at the time this came out - nobody else sounded like this. I know there are lots of haters now, and grtanted, some of their later releases didn't live up to this, but for me, this will always be a game-changing record.

Most people don't hate on Lars for his drumming, it's how waged war against Napster, completely fucked file sharing online, and made such a huge stink about the whole thing to Congress... even though Metallica was making millions upon millions of dollars on sales and not losing any money. He basically forced file sharing into the underground, which (thankfully) he'll never, ever, have the power to stop. Fuck Lars for being anything than a musician, which I do appreciate.
@@Lastkingof33 I personally found it funny since Metallica limped on with bootlegs and word of mouth for a good while before they found commercial success. That being said, Metallica was right about their rights and fighting for them. I stopped listening to them not because of Lars, but because I didn't like their sound from Load/Reload and onward. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't special IMHO.
I remember the movie creeped me out. Just the thought of no eyes, ears, speech...basically no face; no arms or legs, and being forced to exist as nothing but a mind slowly slipping into insanity not allowed to die is just scary. Then I read the book, and it put things on a whole new level.
That was quite an emotional reaction my friend. Made me cry. Much love and respect to you and your loved ones. First time I saw this video, I was 15 years old and it's what got me into this band. I've been watching a bunch of your videos lately. I never thought I'd watch other people listen to music on UA-cam, but I'm enjoying listening to all this great music with you. It's like putting an album you love on for a friend and watching it all click for them as they hear the magic. And it's like hearing with fresh ears. Thank you for giving me some fresh ears my man. This video in particular takes me back to the first time anyone ever put music on for me and told me about it. I was 12. It was the early 90s. My mom had just split from my stepdad, she moved my little brother and me to live with my grandpa since he was alone after my grandma passing earlier in the year. A couple months after we moved there, my grandpa parked a little camp trailer in his driveway, and my 15 year old cousin Mike moved into it. I started spending a lot of time out there with him, mostly listening to music he was into. He never really talked about his life very much. I tried piecing together some sort of story about why a 15 year old would be living almost on their own away from their parents (and allowed to smoke cigarettes!!!), but my naive 12 year old brain didn't have any concept of a world where the actual events of the situation could be a reality. But as I got older and learned how messed up the world can really be, things started making more sense. One night he put this song on for me, and as that intro played, he explained what the song was about. Then he sat back, took a long drag off his cigarette, and we listened. When that long guitar outro really kicked in he hopped up. He had dark hair past his shoulders, and it was all a blurry beautiful arc as he used all of that tiny space to headbang. I had no idea music could be anything like that, could be about those kinds of ideas and feelings, and it changed everything for me. The last time I saw Mike was Christmas of 98. He showed up out of nowhere, surprised us all. He had a new wife and was happy. I remember his huge smile. A few years after that he killed himself. So this has become sort of a holiday tune for me in a way. Every time I listen to it I remember him, remember that time as kids, and I get goosebumps. I'm happy to have discovered your channel and got the chance to listen to it with you this season. Keep it going and I'll keep watching.
I’m SOOOO glad you did this one. It’s my all time favorite song in general, and 100% the reason I fell in love with Metallica. Seeing them live is on my bucket list. I’ve been saving for a couple of years now, in order to have enough money to attend one of their concerts and be in the front. At most 100 feet from the stage. I love Metallica! 🤘🏼 If you can find that movie and watch it, the song/lyrics take on a brand new, and deeper meaning. The music itself will speak to you. The high/low riffs tell a story of their own, if you’ve seen the movie. Confusion, anger, sadness, and finally acceptance. I love how guitar sounds, when played by the right person, can tell a story completely outside of vocals. It’s beautiful.

The problem with a groups like Metallica is that their musicianship is so beyond the talent of so many of their peers that is easy to get lost in the music. You're one of the first reaction people to actually delve deep into the lyrics as well as the music and put the two together. Their talent is so extreme in so many ways that they became the power that they are. It is definitely deep! They wrote so many songs that were music beyond their competitors. They also wrote lyrics that were very very intense. if you really paid attention. So few people can combine both and recognize the immense talent and message. The song is based on the film, but the film is based on the novel by Dalton Trumbo. It deals about the first world war and how young people had to cope with it. The first world war changed the way we used to live in the past. Suddenly everything changed and life lost its meaning (then artistic movements and schools were born). The song also presents the moral dilemma of euthanasia.

I am a service connected disabled veteran, with PTSD this is what it feels like everyday. Your loved ones are right there and you're cut off emotionally from them because of the traumatic experience that you have been through. How do you describe feeling the screaming that you heard and still hear. Concussive blasts taking you back to the battlefield. Soaking your sheets with sweat and very little sleep. The guilt of being the one who came home and like eighty pounds of gear feeling like you're the only one that remembers that they even existed and the need to carry that burden, feeling like you alone cared about who they are and the way they died. Much like Johnny laying there day after day disconnected and trying to communicate and it's like no one can hear you.

I've seen you do several reactions on Chris Cornell. I was able to see him live on tour in a high school up in Cleveland. He took the music of One by U2 and put the lyrics of One by Metallica together. If you can find a version floating around on UA-cam it is worth a view even if it is not up for reaction video. It is both beautiful and depressing at the same time. Gave me goosebumps to hear him do it live.
I remember seeing this video when it was new. A couple years later I happened to read the book “Johnny Got His Gun”, and I thought “this sounds like that Metallica video I saw.” It was an anti-war book that was published right as WW2 started. The movie was from 1971. I have not seen it beyond what is shown in the video.

This was also Metallia's very first music video. Until 1989, they never made any videos for Mtv at all, so this was HUGE deal back then. I was in high school at the time and I remember lots of kids in my school talking about it. Even the non-metalheads were tuning in to Mtv the night the video premiered to see what the buzz was all about. Not sure if anyone mentioned the name of the movie used in another comment, but it's called "Johnny Got His Gun", which was also a book published in 1939 (the movie was released in 1971).

I love reaction videos. I watch a ton of them. Your channel is the only one I'm subscribing to though. Others are just trying to react to the music while you're trying to actually hear what the music is saying. You seem to get that all music has merit, and I learned that a long time ago. I was a Rock and Roll junkie for most of my youth. I listened to Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, AC/DC, and all the "Metal" I could ingest. Then a funny thing happened in 1983. I was at a bar visiting a friend that was working there just over the state line of a state that was still 18 to drink. I lived in a state that had raised the drinking age to 21. Anyway, to make a short story long....lol... I was asked if I wanted to DJ for him for an hour to give him a break, and I've been DJing since that day. I had to learn quickly that Black Sabbath wasn't what people wanted to dance too. I have since expanded my listening to everything under the sun, and have found that it's all good, when done right. Keep posting and expanding your musical tastes.
I remember this from originally seeing it back in the day but it STILL hurts me in my heart and soul when I watch it. Such a masterful combo of music to the video, it's so tough it still gets me all of these years later. Metallica is pretty well accepted as one of the greatest bands of all time. But I don't think they get credit for songs/videos like this and Master of Puppets. Truly dark, realistic works of art and music about war and drug addiction that is unparalleled, at least in my opinion. Again, the fact that I have seen this video for over a decade yet it STILL invokes the same reaction and emotion is just a testament to their talent.

I know that sounds strange, but I knew that whatever sacrifice i may have been asked to make someone would understand the human cost. And, my willingness to pay it not matter what the fear. Probably sounds weird. Thank you for this.
The overall message in this music video (and song) is so powerful, I meander between feeling incredibly sad for all people affected by war as bad as that soldier, and getting goosebumps on my arms from how powerful the music is in combination with that message. Compared to the misery depicted in that movie, my own problems are small as dust specs. One is a powerful anti-war song, I think. That's my interpretation. The song itself conveys both helplessness of one so affected by war, as well as anger (in the third person) that it goes on ad infinitum, as well as a desperation for relief from the pain and terror that it caused. If there's any hint that war is a terrible thing that humankind needlessly inflicts on itself, it's prevalent in this song, among others. Good video.

The song was based off the story/movie "Johnny Got His Gun"(which Metallica bought the rights to) and the clips are from the movie - The Story: Joe Bonham, a young American soldier serving in World War I, awakens in a hospital bed after being caught in the blast of an exploding artillery shell. He gradually realizes that he has lost his arms, legs, and all of his face (including his eyes, ears, teeth, and tongue), but that his mind functions perfectly, leaving him a prisoner in his own body.
Joe later attempts suicide by suffocation, but finds that he has had a tracheotomy that he can neither remove nor control. At first Joe wishes to die, but he later decides that he desires to be placed in a glass box and toured around the country in order to show others the true horrors of war. Joe successfully communicates these desires with military officials after months and months of banging his head on his pillow in Morse code. However, he realizes that the military will not grant his wishes, as it is "against regulations". It is implied that he will live the rest of his natural life in his condition.
As Joe drifts between reality and fantasy, he remembers his old life with his family and girlfriend, and reflects upon the myths and realities of war.

I spent 500 on floor tickets for my me and my mom. When they played this song they had pictures of WW1 soldiers displaying on these floating canvas cubes during the "pretty" half of the song, and images of tanks, explosions, men in gas masks with bayonets fixed, artillery, machine guns, and even pictures of guys missing legs and parts of their face during the "metal" half. It was so fucking awesome

He was blacklisted in Hollywood during the McCarthy-era scandal, but worked under pseudonyms making movies that raised social awareness and are considered some of the best of all time (while under the pseudonym). i watch the movie when i was 11, it gave me nightmares for months, i remember having a mini panick attack when he was making an imaginary calendar in his mind, only to fuck up the count.

That only happens in the movie. In the book, there is a sympathetic nurse, but she doesn't try to kill him. The poor guy just "lives" without really living. Very depressing book and movie.

I was into pop metal like Poison, Motley Crue, etc. I didn't like the song right away. I read Johnny Got His Gun in junior high when I found out it was the inspiration for the song. It was anti war and basically advocated for euthanasia. The fictional character could recall life before his horrible injuries. He was psychologically tortured due to being trapped in his broken body. Would have been better off without the medical intervention.

Metallica was at their absolute peak when they put out this album...and this album set a whole new bar for metal. It was super fast and super technical...and tight! And at the time this came out - nobody else sounded like this. I know there are lots of haters now, and grtanted, some of their later releases didn't live up to this, but for me, this will always be a game-changing record.

Most people don't hate on Lars for his drumming, it's how waged war against Napster, completely fucked file sharing online, and made such a huge stink about the whole thing to Congress... even though Metallica was making millions upon millions of dollars on sales and not losing any money. That being said, Metallica was right about their rights and fighting for them. I stopped listening to them not because of Lars, but because I didn't like their sound from Load/Reload and onward. I've been watching a bunch of your videos lately. I never thought I'd watch other people listen to music on UA-cam, but I'm enjoying listening to all this great music with you. It's like putting an album you love on for a friend and watching it all click for them as they hear the magic. And it's like hearing with fresh ears. Thank you for giving me some fresh ears my man.
This video in particular takes me back to the first time anyone ever put music on for me and told me about it. I was 12. It was the early 90s. My mom had just split from my stepdad, she moved my little brother and me to live with my grandpa since he was alone after my grandma passing earlier in the year. A couple months after we moved there, my grandpa parked a little camp trailer in his driveway, and my 15 year old cousin Mike moved into it. I started spending a lot of time out there with him, mostly listening to music he was into. He never really talked about his life very much. I tried piecing together some sort of story about why a 15 year old would be living almost on their own away from their parents (and allowed to smoke cigarettes!!!), but my naive 12 year old brain didn't have any concept of a world where the actual events of the situation could be a reality. But as I got older and learned how messed up the world can really be, things started making more sense.
One night he put this song on for me, and as that intro played, he explained what the song was about. Then he sat back, took a long drag off his cigarette, and we listened. When that long guitar outro really kicked in he hopped up. He had dark hair past his shoulders, and it was all a blurry beautiful arc as he used all of that tiny space to headbang. I had no idea music could be anything like that, could be about those kinds of ideas and feelings, and it changed everything for me.
The last time I saw Mike was Christmas of 98. He showed up out of nowhere, surprised us all. He had a new wife and was happy. I remember his huge smile. A few years after that he killed himself. So this has become sort of a holiday tune for me in a way. Every time I listen to it I remember him, remember that time as kids, and I get goosebumps.

If you can find that movie and watch it, the song/lyrics take on a brand new, and deeper meaning. The music itself will speak to you. The high/low riffs tell a story of their own, if you’ve seen the movie. Confusion, anger, sadness, and finally acceptance. I love how guitar sounds, when played by the right person, can tell a story completely outside of vocals. It’s beautiful.

The problem with a groups like Metallica is that their musicianship is so beyond the talent of so many of their peers that is easy to get lost in the music. You're one of the first reaction people to actually delve deep into the lyrics as well as the music and put the two together. Their talent is so extreme in so many ways that they became the power that they are. It is definitely deep! They wrote so many songs that were music beyond their competitors. They also wrote lyrics that were very very intense. if you really paid attention. So few people can combine both and recognize the immense talent and message. Thank you so much for doing this very honest video!
The song is based on the film, but the film is based on the novel by Dalton Trumbo. It deals about the first world war and how young people had to cope with it. The first world war changed the way we used to live in the past. Suddenly everything changed and life lost its meaning (then artistic movements and schools were born).
The song also presents the moral dilemma of euthanasia.

I am a service connected disabled veteran, with PTSD this is what it feels like everyday. Your loved ones are right there and you're cut off emotionally from them because of the traumatic experience that you have been through.
How do you describe feeling the screaming that you heard and still hear. Concussive blasts taking you back to the battlefield. Soaking your sheets with sweat and very little sleep.
The guilt of being the one who came home and like eighty pounds of gear feeling like you're the only one that remembers that they even existed and the need to carry that burden, feeling like you alone cared about who they are and the way they died. Much like Johnny laying there day after day disconnected and trying to communicate and it's like no one can hear you.

I've seen you do several reactions on Chris Cornell. I was able to see him live on tour in a high school up in Cleveland. He took the music of One by U2 and put the lyrics of One by Metallica together. If you can find a version floating around on UA-cam it is worth a view even if it is not up for reaction video. It is both beautiful and depressing at the same time. Gave me goosebumps to hear him do it live.
I remember seeing this video when it was new. A couple years later I happened to read the book “Johnny Got His Gun”, and I thought “this sounds like that Metallica video I saw.” It was an anti-war book that was published right as WW2 started. The movie was from 1971. I have not seen it beyond what is shown in the video.

This was also Metallia's very first music video. Until 1989, they never made any videos for Mtv at all, so this was HUGE deal back then. I was in high school at the time and I remember lots of kids in my school talking about it. Even the non-metalheads were tuning in to Mtv the night the video premiered to see what the buzz was all about. Not sure if anyone mentioned the name of the movie used in another comment, but it's called "Johnny Got His Gun", which was also a book published in 1939 (the movie was released in 1971).

I was a Rock and Roll junkie for most of my youth. I listened to Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, AC/DC, and all the "Metal" I could ingest. Then a funny thing happened in 1983. I was at a bar visiting a friend that was working there just over the state line of a state that was still 18 to drink. I lived in a state that had raised the drinking age to 21. Anyway, to make a short story long....lol... I was asked if I wanted to DJ for him for an hour to give him a break, and I've been DJing since that day. I had to learn quickly that Black Sabbath wasn't what people wanted to dance too. I have since expanded my listening to everything under the sun, and have found that it's all good, when done right. Keep posting and expanding your musical tastes.
there is good reason why metallica is one of the greatest. they have written a hundred truly great songs.
I remember this from originally seeing it back in the day but it STILL hurts me in my heart and soul when I watch it. Such a masterful combo of music to the video, it's so tough it still gets me all of these years later.
Metallica is pretty well accepted as one of the greatest bands of all time. But I don't think they get credit for songs/videos like this and Master of Puppets. Truly dark, realistic works of art and music about war and drug addiction that is unparalleled, at least in my opinion. Again, the fact that I have seen this video for over a decade yet it STILL invokes the same reaction and emotion is just a testament to their talent.

I had first heard this song as a young soldier. It gave me great comfort. I know that sounds strange, but I knew that whatever sacrifice i may have been asked to make someone would understand the human cost. And, my willingness to pay it not matter what the fear. Probably sounds weird. Thank you for this.
The overall message in this music video (and song) is so powerful, I meander between feeling incredibly sad for all people affected by war as bad as that soldier, and getting goosebumps on my arms from how powerful the music is in combination with that message. Compared to the misery depicted in that movie, my own problems are small as dust specs. Thank you for sharing your reactions, it is true that these songs are very powerful at reminding us of many of the bad things in life and how many people they affect.

One is a powerful anti-war song, I think. That's my interpretation. The song itself conveys both helplessness of one so affected by war, as well as anger (in the third person) that it goes on ad infinitum, as well as a desperation for relief from the pain and terror that it caused. If there's any hint that war is a terrible thing that humankind needlessly inflicts on itself, it's prevalent in this song, among others. Good video.

the very first time i saw that video , i cried afterwards for a good 5 minutes having nothing to say . That day metallica became my favorite band , and still is to this day .
