      Thank you! I updated the ALUM guide this morning ( wagnerstechtalk.com/alum ), looks like the issue with CoinOpsX on the ALUM (up/down) has been fixed when the machine is in vertical mode. I was able to play Pac-Man in vertical mode which was nice. Either machine is a great choice.

  • @UltimateTechHub
    @UltimateTechHub 3 роки тому +11

    Being able to bring your own games is the best feature. I have thousands of game on my computer. Usually the stock games are decent but they always lack my favorites. Coin Opsx looks great and that's probably the best thing about this arcade. Can you connect external speakers?

    • @WagnersTechTalk
      @WagnersTechTalk  3 роки тому +3

      The ability to add additional games using CoinOpsX is great. There are a lot of great games on the machine (Centipede, Millipede, Burger Time, etc.) but CoinOpsX really does make the machine even better. Adding other devices over HDMI+OTG really keeps this machine relevant for many years to come. There isn't a headset jack but it does support Bluetooth.

    Best home arcade machine on the market imo. Coinopsx and it's build quality make that true. Then add awesome extras like the Bitpixel and upcoming 4 player control deck and it really is just head and shoulders above the rest. Maybe in a few years they make a really beefy unit that supports more mid late 90s 3d arcade games. Be great to see Sega Naomi software running on it.

    • @WagnersTechTalk
      @WagnersTechTalk  3 роки тому +1

      I agree, build quality is great and with CoinOpsX it plays most of the games I would want to play from a USB drive. For anything else, there is always HDMI Input+OTG.

    Have dreamt of an arcade with TMNT Turtles in Time (Arcade / Snes), but seeing this.. Wow! I wouldn't play Pinball on it, since the screen isnt what I was hoping for, but all other games. Is there any cheaper Arcade that would allow me to add arcade games manually ?

      There are a number of options out there, but if you're looking for one that is cheaper and looks like what you saw in this video see this: www.atgames.net/arcades/legends-gamer-series/ and at WalMart www.walmart.com/ip/AtGames-Legends-Gamer-Pro/745469466 . Hey Jon, 2 questions...The arcade cabinet you built (if I remember correctly it plays thousands of games). How often do you play it? And second question, since you have so many different machines to play retro games which do you find that you play the most? I don't own a cabinet since living in Korea I'm in an apartment. I find I don't play on my PC through BigBox, I don't play on my raspberry pi as much as I do play on my Odroid Go Advance. I guess its easier since I don't have to change the input on my monitor and plug in a controller and the long long wait for retropie to boot.
    Just curious about you since you have so many more options.

    • @WagnersTechTalk
      @WagnersTechTalk  3 роки тому +3

      Great questions, I have 4 arcade machines (not including an ALP) in the house currently (and 1 in the shed, a jama 68-in-1 that needs work). Of the 4 in the house, is this machine and x1 original 1981 Defender cabinet (needs a monitor re-cap/CRT), x1 Data East cab that I found gutted and added a Pi 3 to it and a DK Mini Cab (custom built with a Pi 3b+). Both of the Pi 3-based cabinets have been having issues over the past 6 months. Haven't pulled them apart to see why, but both machines are running RetroPie and lock-up if a game is left on. It could be the cheap encoders (same used in both) or could be the images have gotten corrupted. At one point, I was playing the Data East cab consistently for about 2 years. My plan is to revisit both, diagnose the problem, upgrade to a Pi4 on each and rebuild the control panel on the DE cab with a GRS Trackball/spinner. I just haven't gotten around to working on them. When I eventually get to upgrading them, I'll likely install Recalbox or Batocera and create a new image from scratch. As it stands currently, the only one that gets played is the ALU. Of course, I also play my OGS, RG-351m and V90 lately as well as a new handheld I haven't released a video on yet. Hope this answers your question :)

      @retroman7331 3 роки тому +1

      @@WagnersTechTalk Wow you do have some goodies lol Thanks for the reply. Its fun to hear what people have and what they are doing with them. hopefully its just a image issue with the Pi 3b+s...I dont like SD cards as they aren't so reliable. I had one issue with my Samsung EVO Plus...One day friends came over and it decided not to work at all. I had to reimage it and all was well. So far, same brand card in my OGA has had no problems. Hopefully with the Pi4 youll have less issues.
      The more I see of the ALU, the more I like it. It really does have a lot of good features. And the trackball and spinner are awesome to have. I would love to have that. Kaboom! for atari 2600 really needs a paddle/spinner and Arkanoid is another I really want a spinner for. I keep thinking of more and more sinner games lol
      I hope you get that Defender crt recapped. I love 80s cabinets but...so many issues arise with them. Which is why I prefer emulating, but I would love to have an emulating device hooked up to a crt. One day!

    Hi Jon - new subscriber to your channel. Thank you for this video. Just wondered if it's still worth it to buy this version of the ALU since there will be a 4K version coming out? From what I understand, the new version will not have the Atari games on it. I will be buying it at The Brick in Canada and want to make sure I get the latest version, which I believe to be the 1.2 version. Any other pertinent information would be much appreciated. I am finally getting to retirement age and want to start my own mini-arcade in my home. Many thanks and I'm also looking forward to your ALP 4KP review too!

    • @WagnersTechTalk
      @WagnersTechTalk  Рік тому +1

      Hi Terry, thank you for your kind support! It's hard to answer your question, I still love/play my ALU 1.1 a lot. However, knowing that a 4K version is coming this year makes it perplexing. I don't know pricing, so can't draw a direct comparison. I also don't know exactly when they will ship. I do know the UI is going to look a lot nicer, it's going to be faster/more powerful. If the type of games you want to play are mostly 80's to early 90's, chances are the current generation of ALU will be just fine. But, if you're the type that wants the latest and greatest, holding out another 3-4 months may make more sense. I have no plans to get rid of my ALU 1.1 when the new one comes out. It's really your personal preference/call, but just some of my thoughts.

      @@WagnersTechTalk Thanks Jon. Yes, I would like to have the 80's games, so I will get the ALU 1.1 while it's still available. I worked in the Arcade industry from 1980 to 1990 so those are my favourites. Thanks again!

    • @WagnersTechTalk
      @WagnersTechTalk  Рік тому +1

      @terryb.1938 That's awesome that you worked in the Arcade industry! I grew up in the Arcades in the 80's, it was a magical time - I miss it. While I do play some of the the modern games, it's usually not for long. I still love the classics like Time Pilot, Galaga, etc. Those are the games that I can play for hours. Modern games often add too much "fluff" to a point where it takes forever to get into a game and start playing. If I want to watch a movie, I'll use Prime/NetFlix. If I want to play a game, I want to be able to get in/out quickly, not watch a 5-10 min. intro. that won't let me skip it.

    Had mine for a year or so. Turned it on and the screen lights up tries to update to version5.65 then nothing. No joy sticks work no buttons no spinners or roller ball. I see two blinking blue lights next to the power button. The arcade reads that a stick is in it or not but nothing else. Is there a connection somewhere or fuse between the power button and the console controls? What do the blinking blue lights mean. Any help would be really great.

    From a builder's perspective: This machine is both brilliant and stupid (i beleive the stupid part was intentional).
    Brilliant because i've never seen so many controls on a single machine that wasn't a DIY home construct. Stupid because the video and USB hookups were put no more than an INCH away from the game controls where they could get easily damaged (from an excited gamer) and have to be replaced.
    Again, i believe this to be intentional (keeps AtGames in the loop and you needing to pay them)
    Brilliant because the game has access to CoinOps and there are, literally, MILLIONS of games that can be added. Stupid because the ports were not constructed with faster ports and, again, put on the back or in some recess (there's a TON of space) where they could be kept out of harm's way.
    Brilliant because the machine can be constantly expanded. Stupid (intentionally) because too much of the machine requires internet access when you bought it, and it's yours, at that point internet "license" checking should not be needed, it belongs INSIDE the machine. This part WAS intentional, they want to maintan some control.
    I could go on and EVERYTHING i've said was factual and can be checked but i've already spoken to someone at AtGames. They agreed with me, on many of these issues, over the PHONE but will never announce, publically, their feelings because it's too dangerous.
    I bought this machine and the pinball machine at the same time. They didn't arrive at the same time and AtGames support just is terrible. "Some" of them are smug/arrogant and treat you like an idiot when you point obvious things out (again, over the phone i was agreed with but you'll never see it in print) that are wrong and they missed it or their system screws up. I even ordered a back-board expansion, for the Pinball, that was bad and the "replacement" cable they sent me didn't even interface with my expansion device. At that point, i stopped because i wasted almost a MONTH going back and forth with them to get to that dead end.
    The base games are okay for people who want the memories of the arcade, but the CoinOPs expansion is REALLY what makes it shine.

    • @WagnersTechTalk
      @WagnersTechTalk  2 роки тому

      I do agree, it would have made more sense to place the USB and HDMI ports on the side (or back) of the unit. They are in an awkward location. I also agree that the licensing checking could be optimized a bit more effectively. But all-in-all, it's a great machine IMO. Hopefully they'll improve those few weaker areas in time. You will see a mix of opinions on this, at the time of this review it was rarely mentioned. I've had this machine for nearly a year now, I always update and I've not had any issues (aside from CoinOpsX not saving high scores). I don't discount the CTR board has been an issue for some, just hasn't been an issue that I've personally experienced. If I had, I would have mentioned it. Along those lines, AtGames has improved their customer service since this video. They now offer a 90-day (instead of 30 day) warranty and have live chat support. I think the main reason this happens is because so many people say not to update and when jumping from version to version miss out on incremental updates that cause these issues. I could be wrong on this though.
