I can still remember one 80's Saturday night putting on ice skates and never getting on the darn ice rink the whole night because I was too busy emptying all my cash into Tempest, Space Wars and Donkey-Kong machines (thanks mom and dad). Ahh the good o'l days. Even a modern day casino couldn't emulate that excitement. You were king when hot chicks would stand behind you to watch (ok, all that did was mess up my game really). Still, soooo glad I was born when I was.
Holy hell, this looks really good, especially for the price. Also kinda crazy that they went through the trouble of licensing games from the Disney catalog (and others, but Disney had to be the most expensive) and setting up a whole subscription service, yet also clearly know and encourage the fact that this was made to be modded and filled with whatever ROMs you can scrape from the internet. Kinda bizarre, but also really cool of them. Glad to see AtGames putting out a quality product for once.
@RETRO PHIL Heck, anything more than just a few generations old MUST be played on a CRT, say nothing about this classic stuff. They are releasing a LED marquee. Current owners will be able to buy one for 1/2 retail price. They are saying 100.00. It's a full color led marquee that will load the marquee of the game you are playing. The second wave out now will have this already installed.
Already have mine reserved. But I don't see any official source saying this will be included in new ALU units. The page on AtGames' web site for the Bitpixel LED marquee says it's compatible with "all Legends Ultimate and Legends Gamer units", which implies that *no* version comes with it.
Modern Classic No. Local streaming with your own PC on your own network is free. It's separate from the AtGames service that uses the cloud gaming service and a virtual PC. That has a cost because you're using external server and network time. There are only two instances where you're charged, that and ArcadeNet gaming. However, ArcadeNet is free while in beta so there's only the one charge. Everything else you can do on there, and there's a lot, is completely free.
12:20 That square gate is still 8-way. Square gates are only 4-way when they're turned 90 degrees to make it a diamond. The corners don't engage at all on a 4-way gate configuration.
After years of wanting one, i finally built my own full size Arcade cabinet with a raspberrypi and a 26" flat-screen TV. After it was all said and done I think I've spent like $175, but could be done for cheaper
They currently have them available on pre-order in France and Belgium for early June via a well known french chain so there's a good chance it will be available in the UK soon.🤞🤞🤞They are charging €899 though 🙁

The four-way plate is rotated 45 degrees. You feel the detents just fine if the "corners" represent up/down/left/right. That's how it's meant to be played. You need to rotate it.
damn. i almost bought one of the smaller 1up arcades to hack and throw a pie in. i had no idea this thing existed! screw the small 1up guy. if i can get a decent multicade that you can add games to, that has all the buttons and track ball and spinners, and is close to an actual arcade in size, you can bet your butt i'm going to get that instead! now i just need to find one of these things in stock somewhere... i really do miss the days of arcades. i was born late 80s, but i have fond memories of spending my 90s youth in various arcades, wasting away quarters on the various games. the only ones around me now are 40 minutes away and bar-cades which just aren't the same.

I got one last week. Its fun! I thought the widescreen would annoy me more than it has. I love playing missile command with the rollball and crystal castles.
Congratulations on the Legends Ultimate grab! I've been torn between getting one of these, and continuing on with a full sized Mame cab I've been building. My main problem with the LU is, the UI text is way too small for my low vision, at the moment. Also, vertical aspect games are very small on the 24" monitor, compared with the monitor in my Mame machine. Mind you, I do have the A1UP collection, with some of their included games, you run into the same problem. Bigger is always better for my vision. LOL Thank you very much for the detailed review of this amazing machine. By the way, you might want to consider not more than a six inch riser for your situation.
@Spawndude Spawndude If you intend to have physical bezel, with some sort of design, or vinyl graphic, you may be limited to the 27, at most, for a decent sized monitor. However, Given your visual situation, I'd go with the 32" monitor, in which you would not be able to use a bezel, but would enjoy a monitor that's easier for you to see, and actually be comparable to commercial arcade monitors.
I purchased a "Pandoras box" it cost me around £150.00 it has around 2800 games, (some games are in the unit twice) but still serves my nostalgic needs. I purchased the two player unit and the one I ordered has 2 separate controls.
500 bucks is a great price for something like this! fwiw in my own experience, the emalator software can become - happily - a rabbit warren designing own front-ends, setting up Game Lists (Sega, Taito, Atari, whatever). For me most fun has been setting the correct screen ratios + visual FX (this is within MAMEUIFX32 btw) for each title to emulate old CRT phosphor fx, etc.. - really takes me back in time when they feel as I remember seeing them! MC I would definitely consider how you could play games through an old CRT displays such as the oft-mentioned Sony PVM series. I had one of those and LOVED it - scanlines were built in! Ran from an S-Video out on an older laptop and looked far more accurate than a flat LCD screen could ever achieve! Enjoy, I'm jealous!
Are these cabinets empty towards the bottom and could they be modified to put a dummy quarter slot for like a little savings/piggy bank? Just wondering if there are any crucial electronics at that point of the cabinet.
19:19 hm...a scanline option for the game 1942, if they have done it correctly then the scanlines should be vertical, since that game (and all vertical arcades) had an CRT at 90 degrees
@@CommodoreFan64 ya but the most known company doing this stuff Arcade1up sells you an arcade for around $400 and all you can do is play a couple games on it. This arcade has no limit on how many games you play and offers a whole lot more with no mods necessary unlike arcade1up. The price to me is right on point, and it's unfair to compare this to a pc. Completely 2 different things here and your paying for the nostalgia of it all in a realistic type arcade cab.
@@CommodoreFan64 Also I own a pandoras box that cost $200 and thats just for the sticks and buttons built into a box and you plug n play onto a TV screen. So for just $400 more I get an entire full sized arcade cabinet btw, because arcade1up is 3/4 sized and I can play anything I want on it just with a quick download. Sounds good to me. The point is you have companies selling arcades half sized and with 3 games in it. I can buy this Atgames and play over 1,000 games without any MODS!! So whats really worth what here...... Do you see what I'm saying? Did I mention its also the only arcade cab that's fully connected. Meaning wifi internet for updates, adding games and most importantly in which Modern Classic did not mention is that this hooks directly up to your Steam account and you can play some current high graphic fighting games like the new mortal kombat for example... so yes I believe its well worth a 600 tag
And of course the first thing to do is hack it and add few hundred more games. I love the roller ball and all the buttons and joysticks. The USBs are a nice touch and the extra HDMI and online service are a bonus. Now I have to get my wifes permission to put this massive machine in our house. Great video!
Did you email Atgames on all you opinions for them to fix? They seem to put out an update every week or so it seems. I hope they hear from you and take your opinions to use. Awesome video!
I snagged the 1up machines at Walmart as low as $75... instead of adding a $45 riser, i elevated then on $22 "Parson's tables" (also added two beams of wood, screwed into the surface so i don't knock a machine off left or right lol). You can probable do the same to not make your cab as frustrating. If the parson's table is too high, you could just saw the legs down?
It's funny - people complained when people gathered together to play video games, yet they also complain when people choose to stay at home/indoors to play video games...
Weird photo of a arcade in Japan. I live there time to time. Every time I go to the arcades, there is usually a decent amount of people. Though Akihabara's sega towers have a boat load of people.
6'4". So you'd have the same issues. I think it's made assuming people will sit on a stool rather than stand. I'd rather stand, though; feels more nostalgic.
@@ModernClassic Im not as tall as you or Willie, but I am 6'3 and I can say 100percent a stool makes a huge difference. I use one and it makes a world of difference in game play position.
I have been looking for one for over a week now, currently, and am having no luck...How did you acquire yours and do you have any suggestions for me on this...Thanks, excellent video fella :)
Tron, Frontline, and Ikari Warriors are usually impossible to play as their controls are unique. Does the spinner here help with those games? Are you able to emulate them and does the addition of the spinner negate the control issues with these games?
There is actually a dedicated Tron joystick that you can buy and install in this machine, though I don't personally have one. Without that, I find Tron really difficult to play. I may get one eventually but it's a little expensive for an attachment for a single game. But people who have it say it makes a huge difference. Frontline and Ikari Warriors I don't know, I wasn't into those games at the time so haven't spent much (if any) time with them on this machine.
Any word if Sam's Club is going to restock this machine? I am really torn between getting this or the Arcade 1UP Star Wars. If you get a chance can you demo Tron on this machine in one of your videos. I would really like to see how it plays on this unit.
Sam's Club will definitely be getting more periodically, from what I've read from AtGames themselves. I would demo Tron but only if I get one of the dedicated Tron joysticks, and I'm just not really ready to make that commitment. You can find videos on that from other UA-camrs, though.
The Galaga in this footage is just running on MAME (as the BYOG arcade games generally do). It should have the same amount of lag as an average MAME setup. I don't notice much lag, if any, in most games, although I do in some.
@@ModernClassic Thanks for the confirmation. Thinking about getting one, although the fact that the scan lines are in the wrong orientation in vertically oriented games like 1942 bugged me :-) so I'll probably turn off scan lines for vertical games until they fix it.
Your description of 4 vs 8-way seemed backwards. Pac-Man is known to play poorly with an 8-way stick, because you can hit two switches at once, which is impossible on the original stick.
Yes, most of the early 80s games need a 4-Way, when I built my cabinet, I found some good 4-Way to 8-Way convertable Joysticks, you just pull the joystick up, twist to one side and you are in 4 Way mode.
I had written another reply but I'm replacing it with this one. You are right that I messed up that section a little bit, but not quite in the way I think you're thinking. There are square and diamond 4 way gates. Older games with 4 way movement had dedicated diamond gates; this machine comes with a square gate by default. Square gates don't do anything for anybody; I don't honestly know why they exist, since they only give you physical feedback in the corners. Like the Sanwa gates, it looks like you can rotate the inner ring on this plate 45 degrees to get a diamond shape out of it. That would be a lot better for 4 way games that only have up, down, left and right. I honestly didn't try that; I'd never done that before so I didn't even realize I could. Now, that said, for playing a ton of different kinds of games, an 8 way plate is still better, and it *might* still be better even for 4 way games than a 4/8 way gate is. That's because the 4 way gate even in diamond configuration is still really rounded off, so you're not getting quite as much positive "click" into position when pressing one direction or another. 8 way gates aren't rounded off. So yeah, I would have done that part a little differently if I'd just known to turn the inner ring 45 degrees. I'd have at least tried using it that way for a little while. But it wouldn't work too well with other games, I don't think, so I'd probably have still swapped the 4 and 8 way plates.
@@ModernClassic Your restrictor plates looks like Sanwa ones, so you should be able to convert them into diamond. I found a video that explains how to do it: ua-cam.com/video/jQLXRD-0GBg/v-deo.html
I'm still trying to find one of these to be honest and they're sold out everywhere and I'm six foot seven so I'm definitely probably have to get a stool
Would you say this is a TN or IPS panel? I'm curious because I desire good viewing angles. Also I'm torn on if it's better having a horizontal or vertical mounted monitor.
I'm really just making an educated guess but it looks more like IPS than TN to me. I don't have a problem with the viewing angles. And there is some "glow" like IPS panels have. I know what you mean on horizontal vs. vertical. I feel like a 16:9 panel, though, is a little bit too extreme for vertical mounting. So I understand why they went horizontal. That also allows you to use bezel artwork that already exists for MAME on PC's for your BYOG games.
@@ModernClassic well is there any kind of glare at all on the screen? If so then its TN not IPS? Just look at it lol we can't. An IPS screen will always have a matte look with no glare.
That's never been a reliable way of telling screen tech - I personally have sold matte and glossy screens of various technologies. It just depends on what the manufacturer decides to put on them, and it's mostly just down to what they think consumer preference is. As for this screen, the entire screen area (from side to side, well beyond the actual screen itself) is covered in glass. So there's no way to see the screen itself without disassembling the unit - something I haven't seen any UA-camr do, because it's not something you'd really want to do unless you had to.
Mmm....okay, my opinion for what its worth. I _really_ like the control panel. Yep, that's it. If they sold something like that as a USB controller, I'd be all in. The issues I have with these type of products are: They have fairly crappy SBC hardware _and_ run older versions of Mame (both of which lead to glitches and poor performance). To emulate well you REALLY need half-decent hardware and a *freesync monitor* (and GPU). Most old arcade games had MANY different refresh rates and without a freesync display, you'll either get screen tearing or, if Vsync is enabled to smooth that out, input lag and sound glitches. It would also be nice if it supported HLSL to simulate CRT screens (phosphor glow, screen curvature etc.). But I DO like that control panel. I like it a lot.
It comes with everything u seen. The controller deck, cabinet and monitor. And no you can't switch out the deck because if u watched the video (lol) u would see that everything is put on that controller deck including the chipset to make it operate.
You made a mistake regarding the restrictor plates. The 4 way plate is better than the 8 way plate for games like pacman. You must have installed it wrong. 12:00
I would love a high quality bar-top unit. I don't want a full size cabinet like that because I don't have anywhere to put it. If anyone knows of a good single player bar-top, I'd happily accept recommendations.
No unfortunately not, the games that come installed are more unknown or in my opinion not what I'd want to play. But you have a few options of adding your own games for free with a simple download on a pc to a USB flash then you can plug n play
My main issue with this thing is the position of the joystick. I never really played the arcade machines, just the atari 2600. Is it just me, or would right handed people would want the joystick on the right? I can't imagine playing space invaders with my left hand. A wired controller option would work, too, especially for standing/sitting.
You can actually remap the controls however you want. You can use the P2 controls for P1, you can use the P2 joystick and P1 buttons, etc. I will say that this layout is pretty standard for how 2 player arcade games use to be laid out. But some may have been different; I didn't play everything back in the day.
A lot of arcade controllers look similar from afar.. that's why I opened it up to see what was in there. I don't know much about those Pandora's box things other than that with 3,188 games for $180, there's no way those games are all licensed. But who knows what kind of parts are even in there. Could be good, or maybe not. Maybe sometime I'll try one out, but I'm not going to pay even that much for one.
@@ModernClassic the one I have looks almost identical inside, even the board looks very similar. I think it's a low end arm thing and at a guess I would say about as powerful as a raspberry pi 3. It runs 99% of the games fine with the odd one that either the controls don't work or runs slow. I paid about £120 for mine which I think was worth it for a very nice duel joystick panel that can easily be upgraded with a more powerful single board computer and better parts. It's great as a USB duel fighting stick for PC as well.
If people don’t know you should get a retro pie which can be set up by youtube, and if you really want a arcade Machine you can build your own one by watching UA-cam videos I have built one myself and it works amazing if you really want a arcade machine a retro pie is the way to go
There's another guy on UA-cam who did a video on using a MiSTer with this cabinet, but I don't know if he fit it inside. (I think he still wanted to use it with other devices.) The inside of the cabinet is literally just air, though, so there are tons of places you could mount one if you wanted to dedicate it to the Legends Ultimate. Then you would just need to split a cable or two going between the controller and monitor. The cabinet itself is basically just a stand for the controller and LCD screen, so you can do basically anything you want inside it. You could put a desktop PC running MAME in there if you wanted.

Looks good. Contrary to usual output from at games.
They have really made an effort to do things right this time.
ua-cam.com/video/A06mnb6LD10/v-deo.html&t=1391
And of course the first thing to do is hack it and add few hundred more games. I love the roller ball and all the buttons and joysticks. The USBs are a nice touch and the extra HDMI and online service are a bonus. Now I have to get my wifes permission to put this massive machine in our house. Great video!
Don't have to hack it. Adding games is officially supported.
Great video and commentary. If I could only find one in Stock somewhere.
Thanks for the review I was looking at getting one of these now I think I will
How was it?
Did you email Atgames on all you opinions for them to fix? They seem to put out an update every week or so it seems. I hope they hear from you and take your opinions to use. Awesome video!
Don't worry, they have seen this video :)
5:21 Atari lynx.. I still have mine. 👍
i us to go to Arcades in late 70s and early 80s its nice play them on other systems at home or handhold
That looks... surprisingly good! They aren't available in the UK yet from the looks if it but I'll keep an eye out.
Did you offer any assessment at all about the trackball?
It's funny - people complained when people gathered together to play video games, yet they also complain when people choose to stay at home/indoors to play video games...
Weird photo of a arcade in Japan. I live there time to time. Every time I go to the arcades, there is usually a decent amount of people. Though Akihabara's sega towers have a boat load of people.
The lower video quality on the ArcadeNet offerings may be related to latency.
How tall are you? Asking for comparative purposes. I'm 6'5" so I understand your pains and am curious of about the scale.
6'4". So you'd have the same issues. I think it's made assuming people will sit on a stool rather than stand. I'd rather stand, though; feels more nostalgic.
@@ModernClassic Thanks MC. If I buy it I'll build a stand for it to raise it up. Great video, very well put together.
It's not that much different than a regular arcade machine. But I bought a couple of stools anyway.
It’s on preorder at Walmart online right now
Great review. Thank you.
Greetings, what specific type of grease did you use on the microswitches? thanks.
Awesome video!
Has anyone done any lag measurements with this setup? Based on the galaga footage there was quite a bit of lag...
Trust me, you won't want to. It looks way more wrong with no scanlines than with horizontal scanlines.
Supposedly more will be in stock at the end of the month
Great video :D
very educational video, thanks
So there's no way to see the screen itself without disassembling the unit - something I haven't seen any UA-camr do, because it's not something you'd really want to do unless you had to.
are manager settings available (lives, difficulty, etc)
Mmm....okay, my opinion for what its worth. I _really_ like the control panel. Yep, that's it. If they sold something like that as a USB controller, I'd be all in. The issues I have with these type of products are:
They have fairly crappy SBC hardware _and_ run older versions of Mame (both of which lead to glitches and poor performance).
Now I want the Cab and the movie I can't find, Joy Sticks
Bluetooth and otg work amazingly well, although otg still needs updating
Does this come with the monitor and i wonder if you could switch out the control panel for a four player say by arcade extensions great vid man
It comes with everything u seen. The controller deck, cabinet and monitor. And no you can't switch out the deck because if u watched the video (lol) u would see that everything is put on that controller deck including the chipset to make it operate.
Hi, how can you add custom scanline shaders to legends ultimate?
Anyone else sick of the “lit mobile” power bank ad’s?
You made a mistake regarding the restrictor plates. The 4 way plate is better than the 8 way plate for games like pacman. You must have installed it wrong. 12:00
I would love a high quality bar-top unit. I don't want a full size cabinet like that because I don't have anywhere to put it. If anyone knows of a good single player bar-top, I'd happily accept recommendations.
Missed your videos, glad to see your back!
Sadly this is sold out on Sam's Club currently.
Does this have any of the classic versus games like street fighter, marvel vs capcom, or mortal kombat?
No unfortunately not, the games that come installed are more unknown or in my opinion not what I'd want to play. But you have a few options of adding your own games for free with a simple download on a pc to a USB flash then you can plug n play
Was there any noticeable lag using the ArcadeNet streaming?
Not to me. I'm sure it exists but I was surprised that I didn't notice it in actual gameplay.
Hey, you say "pervert" like it's a bad thing
My main issue with this thing is the position of the joystick. I never really played the arcade machines, just the atari 2600. Is it just me, or would right handed people would want the joystick on the right? I can't imagine playing space invaders with my left hand. A wired controller option would work, too, especially for standing/sitting.
You can actually remap the controls however you want. You can use the P2 controls for P1, you can use the P2 joystick and P1 buttons, etc.
I will say that this layout is pretty standard for how 2 player arcade games use to be laid out. But some may have been different; I didn't play everything back in the day.
The “plates” are mostly called restrictors or restrictor plates.
Restrictor plate, or plate, for short. Always been that way. Some people call them "gates" but those people are heretics.
The control panel looks like one of those pandoras box/key things that are all over Amazon. Still a pretty good price though.
If people don’t know you should get a retro pie which can be set up by youtube, and if you really want a arcade Machine you can build your own one by watching UA-cam videos I have built one myself and it works amazing if you really want a arcade machine a retro pie is the way to go
Anything can be done by DIY. This is for people who don't want to bother with all that.
I have Max 330 Mega Pro Internet Spec. You have to call and ask for it specifically.
Could you try to fit a MiSTer FPGA inside ? Love your video as an arcade lover myself.
