My stepdad, who is from Philly, sent me this and said "this is why we loved Bruce Springsteen" that line where "you are not a loser. You are a character in an epic poem about losers." I didn't have that growing up. I didn't get Springsteen for a long time until I was 18-19 and I finally got it. I bought Born to Run and then mercifully, I understood.
I was listening to "Born to Run," one day and I realized my immigrant ancestors would understand the desperation, yearning and ambition in that song far better than I ever would.
Jon Stewart is such a badass. At one point he was the most trusted man in the news media, even though he was a comedian and wasn't a newsperson, that tells you just how special this man was to a lot of young folks.

He was my friend. Springsteen was and is great because he writes about Everyman.
On the afternoon of 9/11 2001 , Bruce Springsteen was walking in the street of New Jersey and a random driver yelled at him :" Bruce, we need you! " .... The fact that this driver felt that Bruce could help the nation to recover from this tragedy with his music and presence, it tells a lot about the importance of The Boss.
As long as you weren't on that list of last minute postponements of concerts on this tour then it is easy for you to feel that way. I love the boss but what a punk move by him.

Bruce’s music and lyrics resonate with me. Thank you Bruce. And thank you Jon for your brilliant tribute.
13 years later after seeing it when it first aired on cbs, that comment is still true. there've been many a funny intro to kennedy center award winners, and many touching tributes. but from the opening set up (bob dylan and james brown had a baby... that will simply never be topped), thru the off brown gremlin designed for male birth control, jon both heralded springsteen's jersey roots, as well as the combo of power and grace in his persona and talent as a songwriter/performer. stewart stood out, yet personified all of us. perfection.
Jon has a sweet way to make this memorable for all time, in fact, now I think of Bruce Springsteen as a multi-personality that has suited our appetites for love & music coming together for all time. and I have watched these videos many times

But this one by Jon Stewart is just PERFECT. It is irreverently humorous yet undeniably sincere and truly moving. And the performances! Damn! Having recently seen Bruce in concert, I agree that he truly empties the tank. I, too, also believe that James Brown and Bob Dylan had a baby. Rock on, Bruce. You are legendary.
The James Brown/Bob Dylan thing is not only funny, it is 110% ACCURATE. It's what makes The Boss unique. It's what makes him different, from say, Neil Young. From a lyrical standpoint, Bruce took a lot from Dylan, but in terms of his music, and more importantly, his stage persona, he took from James Brown. Bruce really comes from the soul tradition more than the folk tradition. His concerts are religious revivals. I know he has solo projects that contradict this, but really, the best way to describe Bruce is that he is a cross between Dylan and Brown. I might also add a little John Fogerty and Van Morrison as well.
Bruce Springsteen came relatively late to me, after being a Beatles fan from my age of 4. 1968 that is. But it was the exact moment I ever first questioned myself on my route, and then came Bruce.
