- Carole King is one of my favorite artists. She has written over 100 hits on the Billboard charts. Her Tapestry album sold over 10 million copies. I have seen her perform many times over the last 40 years. Thank you Carole King! Aretha Franklin's performance still gives me goosebumps. Epic!

Imagine battling cancer and choosing to honor someone else. True music royalty. May she rest in peace.
Why not? Why should cancer define us?
That woman could touch your soul .. To have the privilege to grow up listening to legendary great singer of all time .. imagine the emotions stirred in that room. Carol King was ecstatic but what a legend in her own right . I was riding the streets of LA with my cousin John ( JT) and when It’s too late came on the radio . It caught my ear and stayed with me all my life. To see her honored is such a great thing. Give her flowers while she’s alive. President Barrack Obama and First Lady Michelle did some incredible things in his 8 years of office . Such a class act. And then room was filled with appreciation what a story line . This was Aretha's Goodbye performance. Her last big performance
I still get goosebumps
True 💔😔😔
@@MikeSuley I do, too.
She went out on top then
Ms. Aretha brought her pocketbook on stage with her like she just happened to be walking by and thought she’d join for a quick song. Iconic 😂
Sadly a reflection of how Mrs. Franklin was often treated earlier in her career: she cited not getting paid her promised fee by many promoters as the reason for always insisting on getting paid cash-in-hand prior and taking her handbag with her on stage. The habit seems to have stuck. A reminder of the sad treatment of artists of color in the past.
yes! amazing. she sings so (seemingly) effortlessly.
Hey - she was the Queen - and like Queen Elizabeth, she carried her handbag.
Hi this guy is my grandpa :)
@@lievenbertels She was very fancy and elegant, I think that's the reason.
Aretha Franklin. What a voice and a presence. She owned the room there.
Superb performance, 🕊️Aretha's🕊️ talent remains the sweetest and UNTOUCHABLE.
I don’t think I’ve ever been so emotional over a video, from seeing Carole King break down when she saw the pictures of her mom to the iconic Aretha Franklin sing one of the best songs. This was truly a beautiful video
Wow!Aretha…stunning.Just absolutely stunning.
It's sad that so many people don't know Carole was a song writer before a singer. She had so many hits performed by others. Glad they are showing that now.
she was already a legend from her songwriting in the 60s -- way before tapestry.
If anyone had any doubts, what I doubt, is that Miss Franklin is the real deal queen of US Music. And how she was to have this great song to perform as well. Thank you Carole King
I was in tears watching Aretha sing that. God love her she will always be the QUEEN~!
Aretha Franklin opens her mouth and it's like you've never heard anyone sing before - ever. R.I.P Miss Franklin. You are sorely missed.
Aretha is a child of Memphis and Detroit . . . . both show up in her demeanor and her voice. There is a whole lot packed into this woman. So much feeling and she isn't afraid to show the world, she is an open book.
I read that a while before this, because of health issues, Aretha stopped playing the piano during her performances. That's why Carole was so surprised when Aretha sat down at the piano... Very touching scene to watch
I got to finally see Aretha play an incredible free outdoor show here in Brooklyn down in Coney island about a year or two before this. Holy smokes was she mind blowing.. and she played piano at the show so beautifully. Now I'm hoping to see Carole at some point. The Broadway show was by far one of the best I've ever seen.
My cousin is a female drummer. She had the honor backing up Aretha in Pittsburgh
I don’t think any of that mattered ... she would’ve lost her shit regardless lol
@@jakelive901 I have a lot of music videos on my site. Please subscribe
@@MikeSuley Female drummers. Talk about Girl Magic. Your cousin is a rock star.
I dont know who enjoyed watching this more. Carole or me!! Loved watching her reaction to this very speacial tribute of her life. This wonderful lady so deseved this very speacil evening❤
Even President Obama sheds a tear during Aretha's performance. Carole King touched more hearts then she or anyone will ever know.
Buck Ofama
If only he shed tears for all the deaths he has caused. Anyone can shed tears at a show.
How can you not get emotional? Carole is a great talent! Aretha? What's left to say? She put the cherry on top of the Sundae for Carole
I can't say what I love more... Aretha Franklin's stellar performance or Carole King's reaction--she's so excited it seems she's actually humbled by the honor they're giving her. Priceless.
why hasn't Neil sedaka received this like she has . why hasn't he received anywhere near the amount of awards love and respect that she has . he's a throughtly forgotten and disrespected man and he shouldont be . From Michael from Yorkshire and proud of it .
Both
People are sleeping on Sara Bareilles’s performance. It was perfection.
I just uploaded her performance. A masterpiece. Please subscribe to my channel at Mike Suley. I have many music videos
@ James Eubanks I don’t understand what you mean.
Who else started tearing up when Aretha sat down at the piano?
Nobody
@@deansapp4635 Obviously some did. 17 likes at this point.
Immediately and repeatedly, upon each viewing.
well before that ! but then too.
No, but by the end of her opening line i was tearing. Her voice is so soulful. Only the hard hearted wouldn’t feel moved.
Carole King from NYC - went to Queens College then became the most successful female songwriter in history.
Carole King is just incredible. You can see how touched and amazed at the people playing her music and singing her songs. Aretha's performance was in itself something incredible.
we should also be able to see people performing and singing Neil sedakas songs in tribute to him after his induction . the fact that all this has not happened yet is just plain wrong . From Michael from Yorkshire and proud of it .
She really is. That's the reason I keep coming back to watch this one. I don't think anybody else appreciated this honor as much as she did. It's like she couldn't believe all these people were there just for little ol her.
Carole King was really one of the main architects of 20th Century American music. Her influence is profound and will be felt for many years to come.
neil sedaka also is one of the main architects of 20th century music. yet he's never had any where near the amount of awards love and respect that she has . including the constant snubbing that he has received from both this institution and the rock and roll hall of fame . he's a forgotten and disrespected man and he shouldont be . From Michael from Yorkshire and proud of it .
Maybe the greatest Kennedy Center Honors segment ever.
I was just thinking the same thing. I really liked the Led Zeppelin one too and the Paul McCartney one as well, but the way Carole King seemed to be amazed with each new artist that came out and that they were really all there just for her was just wonderful. Her reaction was simply great. I loved it. Aretha definitely still had it. She was incredible.
@@Barneyrubble241 Just found this after seeing the Led Zep and McCartney ones YEARS ago...my God, man, this one is the best. Couldn't agree with you more about Aretha, what an embodiment of pure energy.
I had forgotten how awesome this one was. I miss those wonderful days of all Carols music, when it was first presented to us 😊♥️♥️♥️.
Soo so true!
Absolutely!
Carole King’s is one of the most entertaining tributes they’ve ever done at the Kennedy Centre Honors. Such a talent and what a way to celebrate them with those performances!
Carole’s respect for Aretha says volumes about their relationship. Wonderful!!
You know you’re rich when you just casually drop your mink coat on the floor. But who cares? It’s Aretha!!! That woman could sing the phone book and it would still sound good. She brought tears to a President’s eyes and I love that Carole King was so awe-struck.
It is very touching when Aretha arrives, sits at the piano and starts playing and singing... how can you not be moved by such beauty?
Aretha's performance here is one of the best performances of all time, bar none. What a tremendously gifted, powerful, wondrous lady she was.
I CANNOT BREATHE....EPIC...
Even at the ending performance, you hear that soulful voice soaring effortlessly above all others. She clearly was a world-historical treasure.
Aretha took them to Church! She reached out and touched the heart's and stirred the soul! So moving! Tears were being wiped from eyes. People were raising their hands and standing to their feet! She could sing the phone book and make you feel that every word was just for you! She was so humble looking towards Carole as to say this is Your song and I'm honored to sing it. Never acting prideful as to say look at me I'm the queen they call Aretha! She was one of a kind. So special! Totally gifted and blessed with talent and inspired many to lift up their voice and sing! ❤️
There’s one other performance that may surpass this one just a bit. Her inaugural performance for Bill Clinton. I think she was at her most beautiful best and, of course, the performance was phenomenal.
And to think she was battling cancer and would die soon later.....
It is 2024 and this still brings such great joy and gratitude for these wonderful performers! WOW, thank you all for your life's work!!!!
Amen 🙏
bawling my eyes out everytime I watch Arettha's performance and Carole's reaction to it
Aretha Franklin is the most powerful voice in the history of music. The Queen 🎉❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉
One of the most beautiful musical history moments ever
Despite her achievements, Carole King is so grounded and humble. She's a cultural icon, and will forever be one of my favorite songwriters!
So true ✊ it's her and James Taylor they are very humble human beings
Watching her reaction to each performer was beautiful. She loved seeing them and had a true appreciation for their talent. Such a kind lady.
@@nkululekonazo5755 I grew up listening to and loving them both. They're forever part of the playlist of my life.
A GREAT singer and lover of life!!🌈
Even if you dont know her personnally, you just know how nice and down to earth Carole is the way she reacts to how artists sing her songs like a histerical fan girl holding her feelings back.
I just love Carole King.
She gave me peace and comfort when I came home from Vietnam... I was able to.get back to me.
Aretha got me over here wiping tears from my eyes.
Aretha is all feeling and emotion. Singing from heaven now.
They'll not have another like our Aretha 💜 God Bless her.
Aretha was there to make an epic tribute to Carole King with her anthem song ..that made me feel all the decades since I first heard that song...
and yes..she made me cry...
IKR!!!
If Aretha sang to me like that I would've missed most of it, having fainted pretty early in her performance. When she stood up from the piano, she blew the top off of the house.
Aretha Franklin, truly
Awesome lady of Soul &
makes music dance. R.I.P.
Love you Ms. Franklin
Aretha played the piano, rose to drop her full length fur coat, and raised her arms in song And I cried and cried
Wow, James Tayler still can sing and play like it's 1975..unreal..
A little disappointed they didn’t have him do “You’ve Got A Friend”!
@@timsmith5361 Same here! I love his cover!
When your career doesn't require you to sing songs like Bon Jovi, your pipes can last a lot longer. I wish JBJ (or Mariah Carey, for that matter) could have kept their pipes forever.
damn Aretha made Carol King's day in 2015, and just now made mine in December 2020!
Yeasss
Beautiful show, excellent performers. Carole king deserved such a tribute.
Beautiful, love her and her music, born in Costa Rica, remember 1971, Tapestry, I get the LP and was the happies person in this word.
F ing Tapestry, the best selling album of all time, every song,...pure Gold
Carole King is one of the best artists in this generation and her Tapestry album is a masterpiece
neil sedaka is also one of the greatest artists of the greatest artists of this generation and also produced many albums that are masterpieces . yet she gets heaps of love affection honours and awards whilst he gets bascically none . and that is just plain not right . From Michael from Yorkshire and proud of it .
I can't believe this is my first time watching this. Carol King's music was such a significant part of my youth.
Glad you liked it. Subscribe to my channel to get more like this
neil sedaka was also a significant part of many peoples youth . yet he has been snubbed by virtually every single institution going . unlike Carole . that's criminal . From Michael from Yorkshire and proud of it .
Carole is one of those people that even though she is in all the hall of fames, has all the trophies and accolades, still feels like she is under rated. She is one of the biggest deals in the history of music. Wrote/co-wrote 118 top 100 hits. One. Hundred. Eighteen. Pure insanity.
These Kennedy center Honors/are some of the best honors ever given. I live In Virginia/and The Kennedy center is not too far from where i live/Its a beautifull center.
neil sedaka should be honoured by it .
Oh my god!!! Aretha Franklins performance caught me off guard!! GOOD HEAVENS!!! That performance opened up the gates of heaven!! Rest In Peace Mrs Aretha Franklin. Along with Carole King, two national treasures. That was too much for this man ,weeehew🥲
Carole King has been nominated for the Rock and roll Hall of Fame induction in 2021 and she deserves all the accolades she gets! Fan's can vote Once Everyday until April 2021 for her. Her song's touch your heart and stir your soul. Let's show Carole some love and Rock that Vote! 😉🤘🏻❤️
Carole King is a vital reason why the girl group quartets were such a phenomenal success in the early 60s. The Sherrells was a major one back then.
How is she only getting nominated in 2021. Her songs put people in the Rock N Roll Hall and she's also a legend own. Tapestry alone should have put her in years ago.
@@HercuLync she got inducted in 1990 as a songwriter and 2021 as an Artist
I'd like to vote for Neil sedakas induction . but year after year he is snubbed by them and this organization . it's wrong how she gets all the love respect honours and awards whilst he gets bascically zilch . From Michael from Yorkshire and proud of it .
Aretha sounded incredible for her age and health at this time. Wow
She loved Carole
Aretha was full on heart performance ❤
when you see that handbag, you knew she didnt show up, for shits and giggles...it was game on, "where my runner-ups at?". I miss her swag...her low key smarts....her flair for the dramatic..and her presence. NONONE could touch her in that department. I actually downloaded on a flash drive, her entrance and performance at Clinton's 1st inaugural concert at the old Capitol Center in Landover, MD. She was helped up the stairs by Edward James Olmos, and walked across the stage, hand outstretched, as she presented herself to the crowd..and then eyes popped out when she unwrapped and mink-trimmed, silk cloak..with a yellow Valentino gown under it...and showed perfect form, with a curtsy to the "first couple'. You really did believe you were in the presence of royalty. I'll never forget it..
My wife so loved 💕 both Carole King and James Taylor until she passed away. We so much enjoyed their music, winter, spring, summer and fall you got a Friend.
Aretha was special. Her presence alone made the occasion special. And the voice. Wow.
Mrs Aretha Franklin performance is an another level of emotion ❤
James Taylor - always brilliant.... The first singer I can remember hearing as a very young kid, back in the early 70's.... and then to hear one of Aretha's last amazing performances....How lucky these people are...
Thought James should have been the one to sing you've got a friend..
I love Carol's expressions through-out all the artist honering her and singing her songs--especially Aretha Franklin. Carole reminds me of an excited child on Christmas Morning! I have never seen any of the honorees so excited!
It's my favorite YT video. Thanks!
@Quaker 2019 I have not seen that one. Thanks.
Yes it's what I was thinking every performance that honor Carole, her expression was like an excited child on Christmas morning, and saving the biggest gift for last Aretha Franklin.
@@ronniestephen9536People should show more excitement. This is an incredible honor.
Amazing her reaction to aretha sitting at the piano the then next reaction when her voice sounded, priceless :)
Carole King made me cry, when I was young -Miss Aretha made me cry for the rest of the time - and laugh too......
I LOVE Aretha so much...we have definitely lost an ICON...May Her Soul Rest In Peace (Amen)
Always so nice to see the president and Michele enjoying themselves so much. They are such a special couple who love music!
The joy on Carol’s face and the superb performance by Queen Aretha will never be bested!
Everyone in the industry and clearly Obama, a friend, knew she was being treated for cancer - despote her denials.
That's why Carole was shocked that Aretha actually performed - AND PERFORMED SHE DID!
Queen Aretha
Ladies and gentlemen. The 👑QUEEN👑 of Soul. RIP Aretha. We miss you so much beautiful.
I am utterly destroyed and rebuilt from the ground up. Good God that was powerful!!

yes but so is neil sedaka and he hasn't received anywhere near the amount of awards honours or respect that she has. that is not just plain unfair but also just plain wrong . From Michael from Yorkshire and proud of it .
Aretha shut. it. down. Incomparable! She owned that song and Carole King lost her ming!
And to know she was battling cancer at the time too......She was A REAL DIVA!!! RIP QUEEN OF SOUL 😭👸🏽
Carole King helped me through my high school years. She is amazing.
Same here.
This is just the world that I want: stunning music, an amazing US president and a peaceful world!!!!!
