Sadly a reflection of how Mrs. Franklin was often treated earlier in her career: she cited not getting paid her promised fee by many promoters as the reason for always insisting on getting paid cash-in-hand prior and taking her handbag with her on stage. The habit seems to have stuck. A reminder of the sad treatment of artists of color in the past.
I don’t think I’ve ever been so emotional over a video, from seeing Carole King break down when she saw the pictures of her mom to the iconic Aretha Franklin sing one of the best songs. This was truly a beautiful video

Carol King was ecstatic but what a legend in her own right . I was riding the streets of LA with my cousin John ( JT) and when It’s too late came on the radio . It caught my ear and stayed with me all my life. To see her honored is such a great thing. Give her flowers while she’s alive. President Barrack Obama and First Lady Michelle did some incredible things in his 8 years of office . Such a class act. And then room was filled with appreciation what a story line . when you bring tears to the most powerful man on earth,,,,
Pocketbook on the piano...and she threw that fur to the floor and was a Legend honoring another Legend. Get. It. Aretha.
That Aretha Franklin she is something else the lady can really sing.
Wow, James Tayler still can sing and play like it's 1975..unreal..
A little disappointed they didn’t have him do “You’ve Got A Friend”!
@@timsmith5361 Same here! I love his cover!
When your career doesn't require you to sing songs like Bon Jovi, your pipes can last a lot longer. I wish JBJ (or Mariah Carey, for that matter) could have kept their pipes forever.
Unbelievable, a lot of great singers there but Aretha sounded at that late age and her illness, better than all of them. Iconic performance.
OMG did Aretha bring it!! No one can touch this.
Tears of joy for all the performers and Carol's indelible mark on music.
Aretha gave the performance of a lifetime..really deserving of a queen!
Epic. This performance has been on my DVR since it premiered. When that fur coat hit the ground... I was out of my seat (and I was at home watching on TV!). THAT is a master class in how to own a song.
Who are the soulless ones who dislike this? You must not have any feelings or emotions at all.
Trumpsters, of course.
@@lisica8458 The good thing is that there are only 19 of them...:-)
@@linlasj Good point, Lars!
Carole King’s is one of the most entertaining tributes they’ve ever done at the Kennedy Centre Honors. Such a talent and what a way to celebrate them with those performances!
Pres n Mrs be gettin into it! YES! What a way to end, but with Aretha bringin it home for Carole.
Carole was so happy
That's friendship
Carole King - genius and humility. What a combination!
This kind of music never gets old although it makes me feel old! Carole King is the greatest! I have loved watching this. ❤
Seeing Aretha, Viola and Michelle in one video made my heart leap… so much artistic and black excellence in one frame. Wonderful era to be alive.
I thought I'd seen the most emotional KCH show with the Led Zep one with the Stairway To Heaven finale. But this one beats it by a mile. Great production. Seeing Carole cry when she saw her mother on film got me. Great artist, great music. Thank you Carole.
Agreed 👍
You poor soul. You have not yet realized Zeppelin is 2nd to no one EVER!
I feel so lucky to have actually attended a Carole King concert, she is an amazing writer and performer !
as is neil sedaka . but unlike her he's been bascically forgotten and unawarded . that's just plain despicable beyond words . From Michael from Yorkshire and proud of it .
@@michaelspilman5220 carole doesn't get nearly the amount of recognition she should receive and i believe that's because she is a woman. so when she does get recognized, i'm always for it and happy.
You know you’re rich when you just casually drop your mink coat on the floor. But who cares? It’s Aretha!!! That woman could sing the phone book and it would still sound good. She brought tears to a President’s eyes and I love that Carole King was so awe-struck.
All of them were great but Aretha made me tear up as soon as I heard her voice , she was Epic . James Taylor was incredible too . I still have my Carole King vinyl albums from the 70's , along with rock stuff etc .
Thanks for visiting my channel!
Carol and Aretha…two powerhouses unite and bring the house down
Two legends so stellar they feel unreachable. Yet they seem so down-to-earth and approachable you feel like you know them personally. This is a performance and experience of a lifetime... never to be repeated.
If I want to give myself head-to-toe body chills, I just listen to the first five seconds of Aretha singing. I love the lyrics and I love Ms Kings' reaction and the guy sitting behind her; he and I had the exact same reactions to everything!!!
Aretha's performance here is truly other worldly.
She had President Obama in tears!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Aretha took them all to Church Child!
R.I.P Queen.
Thanks. Glad to share it
no auto=tune needed,100% class and style here
Aretha shut. it. down. Incomparable! She owned that song and Carole King lost her ming!
And to know she was battling cancer at the time too......She was A REAL DIVA!!! RIP QUEEN OF SOUL 😭👸🏽
Great songwriter Carol King and the one and only The Queen Aretha !
Carole's music pulled me through some very difficult times in my youth during the 70's. Thank you, I'm still here because of that......
Though a little before my time, in a word... MAGIC!
