That speech by Jon may have saved my life. I went from Michigan to NYC when this happened, hoping my Navy training in firefighting and first aid might be of use. It wasn't by the time I got there and managed to get into ground zero. But I had 2 weeks' vacation, and I decided I could still schlep food and drinks and help move some rubble. But one day, helping two fire fighters, I saw something I still hate to think about - I could not take it. I left, knowing I might not get back in, got a cheap hotel room and some beer. I think I was on the verge of PTSD. I had never seen The Daily Show, but I had heard it was funny, and I saw it on the cable guide, and tuned in to see Jon talking about people from all over, with buckets, rebuilding, and I realized that he, a New Yorker, was talking about me. He made me realize that my tiny contribution mattered - so I went back. If I had not, I don't think I could have looked at myself in the mirror. I swore an oath in 1981, if I had left, I would have violated that oath, and Jon gave me the strength to keep it.
I remember watching his commentary after 9/11. It felt like the first attempt to return to normal after days and days of watching the news and replay after replay of the events that unfolded. The world had to start spinning again and Jon helped us find our footing.
I didn't discover that commentary until after UA-cam had truly taken off as a media platform, plus I was in middle school when 9/11 happened. I do remember, however, feeling incredibly unsettled and scared that we (i.e. Southern California) would be "next" on the terrorists' hitlist, even as a child. Years later, I finally happened upon the post-9/11 segment where Jon addressed the country in one of the most raw, heart-felt monologues I had seen. Stewart has a helluva coaching tree
I don’t know how many times I’ve watched this!! Too funny!! Steve Carell is a comedy genius.. He delivered this so perfectly!!
OMGosh….it must have been so wonderful to work on this show! A dream job indeed! I watched it and laughed my ass off .jon deserves this award and these guys are true friends for life ….what we all would dream of having. In our lives. Congrats Jon!
This video never stops making me laugh. How can he keep a straight face? HOW, STEVE? HOW???
His timing and inflection are just a master class
I can't believe he got through this without breaking. The Office blooper reels, for instance, showed he will crack up fairly frequently. But he just crushed this and his commitment made it easily 5 times as funny. So great.
Also, "mobile home full of snakes" is one of the funniest phrases I've ever heard.
Nah. He hardly ever cracks on the office. If you watch again, it's usually someone else who cracks, and he laughs to join them and not make it seem like they screwed up the scene. He's almost never the one who cracks first.
He cut his teeth as a deadpan comedian.
He does crack though?
Gotta love Steve Carell!!! He was a gem on the daily show as well!!! All of his movies are amazing! He is a GOAT in the making! I felt when Jon said "you have to stop" through hysterical laughter. When you have hilarious friends, you reach a point of laughing so hard you can't breath! Awesome.
Went from busting a gut, to sudden tears. It takes a Jon Stewart or a Steve Carell to do that!
Steve is a class act..and you are right..we forget how incredibly funny Steve is..genius...
So funny! 😂👍 All these comedians paying homage to one. It's like a roast, but more 'respectful' so to speak. It's great to have a good laugh at the end of a horrid week 😝
Congratulations Bulldog. That is respect!!
I’ve always liked Steve Carrell. But this is damn near some of the funniest material he’s ever put together. I might say he completely outdid every other speaker of that night.
*Carell
This was a great night for Jon Stewart..glad I was able to watch the entire show.
Glad to see Carell being funny again, those drama movies he's done are solid, but this is definitely his bread and butter.
This year's award ceremony was amazing television. The comedy coupled with the sincerity was a real treat.
Man look at comedy. Experimental. On the edge. Willing to test new boundaries but still funny for the ability to extract comedy from whatever the circumstance is. Just brilliant! Love these guys. They've helped thru so much.
Edit: No disrespect to the other comics who came before or after but Steve Carell took the night. Amazing amazingly funny and brilliant stories.
Everyone spoke so well for Jon Stewart.. Well deserved
That show was really special, with all these talents together.
Jon is coming back to America!
One year after and I'm here again, laughing again, getting moved again. One year later I still couldn't pick the very best of all the hilarious heart warming {and pain relieving} speeches on that fantastic human being Jon Stewart is.
Just like the Daily show, your insides hurt from the laughter one minute and the next you’re enraptured by the sincerity.
Never stop
Every daily show Alum is a national treasure.... but Steve Carrell is just a different level of humor when he turns it on.
As happy as I am they all found fulfillment in their own rights, I selfishly wished Carell, Colbert and Stewart would continue on the Daily Show forever. I miss them together.
Last time Colbert was funny
One can dream! He left us right when we needed him the most lol!
The best tribute to a friend that I never saw in my life... 👏👏👏
Crying from Laughter 😃
This has to be the 10th time I've come back to rewatch this
Saw this program, and loved every minute of it! Stewart is incredible, and his social activism warms my heart.
Jon is loved down here in Australia and New Zealand as well. He stands for the America we are Allies and friends with and who we care for.
John’s comedy tree is insane. So many great comedians came out of his run on the Daily Show!
