On one hand you mention not wanting to buy a used crank because of the warping issues this gen had, understandable. But by buying an entire used engine you still have the risk of getting a warped crank? I would have chosen the rebuild with a new crank. I have a 1st gen with 106k miles and will prb be going through this process sooner or later. Good video.
Videos are a huge help thanks! You wouldn’t happen to be located in the Midwest by chance? I’m in middle of rebuild and looking for someone to replace my valves and retainers and do top end overhaul. I have never messed with timing or shims and don’t want to mess anything up. ✌️
Great video man! Recently started having an issue with mine and am having some trouble identifying it. Very strange and isnt acting like any blown or seized engine ive dealt with. Thinking maybe it dropped a valve, starter motor is grinding teeth, or something deeper like a bent crank. Any way i could upload a video, or email one to you and see if you recognize the sound? Thanks!
the 1st gen were more known to bend cranks. Follow my vids to test it turning over. Pull right side cover and turn engine over by hand after pulling plugs(in neutral). Could be something as simple as a stuck open injector flooding a cylinder. You dont want to use the starter if there is a mechanical failure as it will make it worse.
Best bike ever built. Just needs a mod or two to make it your own.
If you do rebuild you must check into the new "DIPPLED" surface for the cylinder walls that can save 30% on friction in that area.

CHECK THE RETAINER IS ALSO BIG PROBLEM WITH THIS ENGINE
THE WILL CRACK 08 MODEL DONT HAVE THAT BECAUSE THERETAINERS ARE TIKKER
