You're right on the names. Rob was trained in opera in college, but he hadn't sung any opera for about 15 years when they did this. Nessun Dorma is his dad's favorite piece. Austin's degree is in musical theater, but I do believe that included a couple classes in opera just for a good, rounded musical education. Austin had been wanting Rob to sing this for years, and finally talked him into it on the condition that Austin do it with him. They recorded their parts separately, and when Austin got Rob's, he had to go back and re-record his because he felt he hadn't done it well enough to match what Rob had done. I love these guys' friendship. They both admire each other so much, and it comes through in their performances.

Rob is a heroic tenor, Austin is a lyric tenor and they are both mind blowingly talented

Names are on point. Rob studied opera in college, meanwhile Austin studied musical theatre in college.

Home Free will surprise you at every turn. Their range of talents and skills within the group is phenomenal. This was wonderful and I'm so glad they did this and hoping they do more opera. Great reaction..

Other musicians have described Rob's voice (the one with the glasses) as more traditional and Austin's voice (the one with the long hair) as more of a crossover voice.

Strictly speaking Austin's a lyric tenor. The "traditional" voice is not as much in demand these days, as the Italian operas fall out of fashion and modern opera composer prefer the agility and attack of a lyric tenor.

It's not too often you get to hear harmony in a 'solo' opera piece, is it?
Rob had operatic training in college, while Austin's training was in Musical theater. You might be interested in Austin's cover of Bring Him Home
Austin wanted Rob to do this because he knew of Rob's training, but Rob refused to unless Austin joined him, so they both did months of study and practice.

In an interview with Patrol Gaming, Austin said that he really wanted to show off "opera" Rob but Rob said he wouldn't do it unless Austin sang it with him. Austin went on to say that he thought he'd been okay but that Rob had been fantastic. I love the way they support each other and I think they were both terrific. Rob had extensive opera training but decided against a career in it. Austin had some but his degree is in Musical Theatre.

You should do more Home Free. They can any sing genre and you are correct about Rob'
s background in opera. It was only at Austin's insistence that they did this song.

They were really nervous about this. They weren't sure if the fans would like it. Ha! I would call Rob a true opera tenor, while Austin is more of a lyric tenor.

  • @Indigo_moon

That's interesting your say that about Rob because he sings Tenor for HF and normally sings with a totally different tone quality and placement. I think most people are surprised by Rob the most. Austin still sounds like himself. I think maybe you should listen to "End of the Road" to hear Rob's normal tenor voice again. I think you'll be surprised actually. Thanks for the video.

I think Rob threw me because he started in the lower register. He's definitely a tenor.

There is in opera a thing called chiaro scuro or light and dark. Rob has a "darker" (richer) voice that reflects his opera trainng where Austin has a lighter, brighter voice, which reflects his musical theater training. Austin has a much higher placed head voice where Rob's is more forward. Both were absolutely magnificent.

    Amazing isn’t it ?
For something completely different than anything you heard from Home Free
They just released an original written by Chance Skull and Bones it’s for the video game Skull And Bones Ubisoft is releasing soon. They have a Lyric video and they sang a shorter version at Ubisoft Live Premiere. It’s beyond Epic

Austin does a solo of “Bring Him Home”. There are two videos out, one live with Home Free, and one recorded at home, accompanied by a piano. Look for the at home with piano version. In the live concert version, Austin was not feeling well, and doesn’t sound as strong.

Hmmmm, first time I've seen a reactor more surprised/impressed with Austin in this. Normally everyone's more shocked at Rob's performance. Either way, it's still very beautiful ❤❤❤

Yes this is wow, wow and again wow. This is insane. Fantastic.
Both are doing great. But Rob, I'm perplexed. His voice is just magical and so rich Chills just ran through my body. It flows into my heart. He will be able to stand with the greatest of opera singers. It's not often that I listen to songs by opera singers 5 times and more in a row. But here it is. Of course I hope that both will always continue to do Home Free, but I wouldn't think it wrong that such "trips" are made more often. Opera, country, ballads, soul etc. I think anything is possible..

Wanted to edit my last comment, but my phone isn't letting me! 😐. Wanted to add that there was no disparagement in their observations about Austin's being crossover mix of theatre and opera. Perfectly legitimate choice.

Great reaction! The best I've heard so far was from an Italian opera singer/reactor who said she not only forgot they weren't opera singers but she forgot they weren't Italian. Years ago Rob's vocal coach said he would have a huge career in opera. Thank God he joined Home Free.

Such a treat! But seriously, Rob sounds like a different artist than we hear when he sings with Home Free!
I don't care for opera, but these two "tried" and did what I didn't expect--they made me want to watch it over and over again. Who knew? 🤭

Love this! You are correct on the names. Rob has studied opera but that was years ago. HF has often said that Rob has the best voice in the group. Rob is a tenor (not baritone) and Austin is the high tenor. Opera singers have said he would be a lyric tenor in opera. He studied musical theater. They are exceptional. All the singers have incredible talents. Austin, Chance (newest member and baritone/bass) and Tim are songwriters and have written beautiful music for the group. Tim (bass) has a 5 octave range. Newest song was written by Chance for a pirate game called Skull & Bones. It’s a banger. Tim goes insanely low in it. Good reaction! HF is known for great harmonies. Try Helplessly Hoping, One Man Band, Take Me Home Country Roads. 😍🥰

For your enjoyment, try Austin Brown's solo effort of Les Miserables' 'Bring Him Home.' As a one time 1st. violinist, I can truly appreciate two people, put their egos aside to challenge themselves, as they did. I know, I know that they are no where near the classic singers, but, that's not the point, is it? I am just so grateful for those who bring such joy to our ears.

In the opera Turandot it’s an aria, but it is often sung in a group in concert.
This was a signature song of The Three Tenors, Luciano Pavarotti, Plácido Domingo and José Carreras.

The capability of excellence by each of the individuals in this group is off the charts awesome that allows them the flexibility to do so many types of vocalizations and to do it exceptionally well. I have not found a genre they are afraid to tackle whether individually or as a group they are amazing. Then top that off with their arrangements that augment the presentation to be "Home Free" owned. ❣

Great reaction! I have never been a big fan of opera except maybe some Andrea Bocelli & a few others. But I have always appreciated the talent it takes to sing opera. I was pretty impressed with Rob & Austin's version of Nessun Dorma. I have heard this famous song done by Pavarotti. I think I was more surprised by Rob's range & powerful delivery than even Austin's. Pretty good for a couple of country boys! Nice to see them dressed up in suits & looking classy.

You never know who is classically/operatically trained in country music (Rob)
and who is trained theatrically who is in country music (Austin)
Also the great Avi Kaplan Classically/operatically trained who is the former and original bass for Pentatonix who is now writing and singing country.
Greatness hides in the strangest of places.

Great Opera and musical theater cross over.. Rob nails it and if he had chosen, he would have had a wonderful career in Opera. Austin was far too nasal but enjoyable for what it is.
It is very nice to hear a reactor who wasn't surprised by how well Rob did...It's always been so evident.

People need to realize THESE FIVE MEN ARE TWO FROM MINNESOTA, (Rob Lundquist & Adam Rupp) Three are SOUTHERNERS = Tim Foust, Adam Chance & Austin Brown ..... all are phenomenal singers with RANGE, PERFECT PITCH QUALITY that blows you away .... "country" is few and far between with their catalog - all the work herein in Nessum Dorma ,,, is simply playing with a tune that does a job of pronouncing Italian .... and nare a sweat knocking out the lines in power and precision. I do not know your qualifications of Vocal Training BUT, THERE IS NO RUB in their alliteration of the "S" and such .... Austin IS A PHENOMENAL HIGH TENOR .... "Bring Him Home" (Musical Theater dynamo) and Rob has no formal experience in opera, stage .... just as a Tenor 2 (Mid Tenor) his lower register here is more in keeping with Opera / Symphonic vocal performance ..... so wrong on all your assumptions - try sampling more the 300plus songs this group in three incarnations has produced over twenty years now. If you want ot be a HOME FRY - get some headphones and LISTEN. Thanks, jj
