New subscriber, came for the Home Free! Home Free in my opinion are 5 of the most talented guys in music today. They can sing anything and make is sound amazing! Their arrangements, their harmonizing, their ability to put the best lead singer in each song and they blend beautifully. And the beatboxer/ vocal percussionist Adam Rupp (the human drum kit) brings it to life. Individually they are incredibly talented. Together they are phenomenal! They are also humble, humorous and they love what they do and love their fans (Home Fries). And we love them right back! They are country leaning, but sing all different genres of music. Avi Kaplan joins Home Free on their cover of Johnny Cashs' Ring Of Fire. The beat boxer, Adam Rupp, is almost inhuman in his ability to go very high with his sound effects, if you'd like a sample I suggest you listen to Home Frees cover of the Doobie Brothers classic Listen To The Music.

Great reaction. You are one of the few that catches that Tim goes down a whole octave after his solo. Amazing range.
But there are allmost No one who catches Austin going up a octave, when they sing the chorus part.
They've come a long way since the Sing-Off, haven't they? Thanks for reacting to them. Most don't react to Tim (bass) dropping the octave at the end, so you're already ahead of the game!

Adam Rupp is the beatboxer. He's my favorite all-around musician in this group because he defies so many norms, and I love that. It's interesting, everything he does. Check him out for some of the solo performances he does. The one in the red flannel from 2015 is a great intro to his genius. AND he has even gotten better since then (more crisp). The Strawberry Festival UA-cam video is great and shows his progress since 2015.
By the way, Geoff is from Voiceplay. Here, Tim Foust is the bass (and tenor) from Home Free. I say tenor, too, because Tim can sing very high, and it's astonishing at times, since he's very flexible in all of his ranges, with vocal runs higher and even in his deep register, which is very unique for a bass. Therefore, you should check out his solo stuff, as well. You won't be disappointed. He's got a five octave range, and he owns every single note of it.

I think Jaw Harp or Jew's Harp is more the term. A tiny harp that you put against your lips or teeth and hum/blow through the arms while plucking the flapper. Mouth Harp is often used to describe the harmonica.
@@martinhafner2201 - yes, all of those are used interchangeably (Mouth, Jaw, Jew, Juice, and several others). I have heard all of them hear in the South. When I was little my brother had one and so around my house, we referred to it as the Jew's Harp.

Tim enunciates the words so beautifully. I'm able to understand what he's saying. Actually, all the guys enunciates so well.
The mouth harp sound at the beginning and end of the video was done by Chance, who is beside Adam The Beatboxer in the back, but the "Nomonica" was totally done by the beatboxer and I've seen them do this song in concert and it sounds just as good.

Tim's "dragon breath" is something else. I would suggest to take a look at Tim and his friend Peter Hollens singing Misty Mountain there is some serious bass. The whole song is done just by the two of them layering their voices. The two have done quite a lot songs together and Peter joined Home Free a couple of time too.
You might look at their cover of "Helplessly Hoping" by Crosby, Stills, and Nash, it is absolutely breathtaking and I think it showcases their own unique voices and their ability to blend flawlessly with each other better than almost any other song they have done. But imho every song they have done is amazing, welcome to the Home Free rabbit hole!

Yeah a lot of people don't realize that, as well as being an excellent beat boxer, Adam Rupp is also an excellent singer. Helplessly Hoping doesn't have beat boxing so instead Adam harmonizes with the others. Also, Adam said he never beat boxed until he and his brother Chris started Home Free. Incredible.
Geoff Castellucci is in Voiceplay. This bass (with a 5+ octave range) is Tim Foust. The jaw harp is made by their newest member Adam Chance who goes by Chance and replace Original member Chris Rupp. 1st singer is Austin Brown. "Here we go" is soulful Rob Lundquist. Last but NEVER least is Adam Rupp, human sound machine and fantastic singer, brother to Chris.

Tim Foust, the bass, has the most amazing range!! He has an album of songs where he does All the parts himself. Listen to Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow/ Stay.... hold on to your chair, though, he is a vocal acrobat!!! I've seen them live and he is for real... I'm in awe!!
Tim is a natural bass. He has a 5 "plus" octave range. Adam Rupp is co-founder of this group. He started beat boxing in college. They all are lead singers, they all beat box to some degree, live 9-5 breakout will give you an idea. Thanks for the reaction to these great talented gents.

Chris formed the group in 2001 in Minnesota, the five originals were, Chris and Adam Rupp, Matt Atwood, Darren Scruggs, and Dan Lemke.
This explains why I have never taken to Avi's voice at all, but totally love anything Tim sings...it's the tone.
Actually PTX started in 2011 in high school, Home Free started in 2001 in college. Both are amazing but I lean to Home Free more. The bass is Tim Foust and the beatboxer is Adam Rupp, the high tenor is Austin Brown, the lead tenor is Rob Lundquist and the baritone is Adam "Chance " he replaced Chris Rupp when he left the group after the sing off. That was one of the first songs I heard from these fantastic guys. I don't remember how many times I watched the video until I was sure - there is no harmonica LOL Austin and Rob do a damn good job. And then Tim's bass.... WOW. By the way, it's still beyond me how Chance gets the mouth harp notes right. Thanks for the great reaction!

I can see that I am late to the party over here! :D My fellow Home Fries have already filled you in with a lot of basic info about our boys. Other things to know is that they call themselves a band rather than a group as they use their voices to mimic the normal progression and sounds of regular instruments that are not the mouth. These guys are professionals, and they are not only crazy talented, and they keep evolving, they are also funny, caring, humble and genuinely awesome people. They release 1-2 new videos every month and have done so since the summer of 2014, the year after they won season 4 of the Sing Off. This means there are around 200 videos to react to. Make your pick as you are drawn to them and mix it in with our suggestions and recommendations, because some are more impressive than others - although they are all impressive. While most of their videos are covers, or upgrades as we affectionately like to call them, their two latest albums are mostly originals, the bulk part of them co-penned, because that is how they write music in Nashville, by Austin Brown (the high tenor) and Tim Foust (the bass). Btw, Home Free was around for 9 years before PTX was formed and they started using beatboxing very early in, so PTX was not part of the creation of this type of acapella, they were however leading the movement due to their win in the Sing-Off, which was more exposed than the following season, and due to them singing more main stream and popular music. I have subscribed in hopes for more Home Free. Oh, and they have some amazing collaborations out there, covers featuring the original artist, including American Pie with Don McLean himself (the second time ever he has studio recorded the song), Elvira with the Oak Ridge Boys, Christmas in Dixie with Alabama, God Bless the USA with Lee Greenwood, One Voice with Billy Gilman, and Don't Laugh at Me with Mark Wills, People with Jeffrey East, as well as some other artists that are upcoming like Texas Hill, Maggie Baugh and more. Aside from this they also performed at Diana Ross' 75th birthday party, rushed in with a few days notice after she had spent a day binge watching their videos, and they did Children Go Where I Send Thee with Kenny Rogers on his last Christmas album. But don't just react to the collaborations, because while they are awesome together with others, they shine even brighter on their own. Enjoy!! :D

I notice the references to their video for Needtobreathe song “Brother”. That would be a good one to react to.
Just saw them do this song live in December. They use a looper so Adam Chance can do the jaw harp sound and also sing baritone. So, he starts out doing the jaw harp for a few measures and then Adam Rupp, the beatboxer who runs the looper, hits a button and it keeps going. The sound is made through a technique called throat singing. It uses the false vocal chords to create a two-note effect. It's all vocal, no electronic manipulation needed. Adam Rupp's nomonica is also purely vocal. It's produced by singing a high note with the mouth closed and placing it at the mid-face/nose area so it resonates through the sinuses. In live shows, Austin goes and joins Adam doing "nomonica" in harmony to his. Adam's done the nomonica in several recent songs -- Workin' for a Living, Ain't Going Down Till the Sun Comes Up, and So Long Dixie, to name the most notable ones.
Oh, and if you count his throat bass, Adam Rupp actually has the widest range in the group. He's definitely their secret weapon.

Home Free is known for tight harmonies but they should be known for their ability to create a sound scape. They don't just sing or beatbox. They add the little things like birds, bugs or winds. And that jaw harp sound...all Chance. He does it live and it sounds just as good. And yes, Adam Rupp (beatboxer) swallowed a drum kit. You should see his drum solo stuff. You are absolutely right...the tone of Tim and Avi, though they may hit the same notes, are totally different. The only way I can describe it is that Avi's voice has a velvety quality and Tim's is more butterscotch. Then if you ever get to hear Chance's deeper register...pure smooth whisky! It's cool how they can hit the similar notes but be so different.
Home Free was in season 4 of the Sing-Off, as was VoicePlay, whose bass singer is Geoff (Jeff) Castallucci. Did you see the previous three seasons? Season 2 was broadcast December 2010 and the 2nd place group was Street Corner Symphony out of Nashville. Their bass singer was named Adam Chance. That's the guy you see here in the black vest dong the jews harp sound that begins and ends this song. (He just goes by Chance when with Home Free because there already is an Adam, and usually sings baritone when Tim is singing bass. Usually.) Chance joined Home Free when Adam's brother and co-founder of the group left in May 2016 for solo projects and singing with Cypress Fyre and (with sister Tristin) 7th Ave. I love their video for Uptown Funk!

The initial "sound effect" by the "baritone" is actually Mongolian Throat Singing. Adam Rupp has a short video on You Tube explaining (kinda) his "nomonica". My personal favorite by the group is "Do You Hear What I Hear" arr. by Adam Rupp.

Brothers in Arms in another great bass song that Tim Foust (the bass) just kills. These guys are all amazing and they just keep surprising us. If you ever have the opportunity to see them live definitely take advantage of it. They are just as good live. Very humble group of guys and down to earth.
Lol, welcome to the Rabbit Hole! Homefree is an amazingly talented group of guys. Tim doesn't do the over the top Bass Drops if they don't make sense for the song, but there are some songs when done live Tim will drop the ground out from under you. Tim has blown speakers with an insane Bass Drop. Austin and Rob are tenor 1&2 have incredible control with slides and runs. The sound that you couldn't place was not a Digerido, that was Chance, Baritone and Bass as needed can replicate very convincingly, a jaw harp (that's the "twang sound" throughout the song. Adam Rupp ( founding member of the group)does a very convincing "No-monica" Champion Percussionist and Beatbox...the texture he ads to every song is amazing. Oh and by the way Adam is also a talented tenor when he needs to be. All five of them are super versatile which is such a benefit to the group. Songs to watch for are "Understand ", " One man band", " So long Dixie "which does include a fantastic guitarist named Chris Chatham who frequently collaborates with HomeFree. Tim Foust is the bass {has a 5-octave range}, Adam Chance {AKA Chance} is the baritone/bass {also a 5-octave range}, Rob Lundquist (with the full beard and glasses} is the tenor {vocally trained in Opera), Austin Brown is the high tenor and is also Vocally trained, Adam Rupp is the beatboxer /vocal percussionist. The Home Free bass is Tim Foust. Geoff Castalucci is with another a capella group called VoicePlay. They were on the same season of Sing Off as HF. Their lineup has drastically changed since then though.
The only change in Home Free is that Chris Rupp (usually always in a hat) left in 2016 and Adam Chance (goes by Chance) replaced him. Chance is back left and the last one you see in the video. He's the one doing the mouth harp sound using throat singing.

Austin Brown is the high tenor, Rob Lundquist is the Tenor, Adam Chance is the baritone, Tim foust does the bass, and Adam rupp the beatboxer. They each take turns singing lead depending on whose voice fits best for particular song. They have worked very hard to extend their octave range I would almost say that each one could can sing through four octaves.Tim Foust sings five or better.

Did you notice the record crackles at the very beginning? That was Adam Rupp, who also has magical skills on the no-monica and is a world-class beat boxer.
The other sound was the jaw harp, done by Adam Chance (called Chance), who is in the back row on the left. He replaced Chris Rupp who appeared on the SingOff.
Tim Foust, the bass, has a 5+ octave range (G0-A5). He was singing the lowest in that 4th season, and continues to go deeper than most other singers out there. (Geoff is the bass with a group called VoicePlay, who were also on SingOff that year.) Home Free recorded another version of Ring of Fire and it features Avi, so you can hear the two together. And yes, after his solo, he drops a full octave.
The first singer was Austin Brown, the high tenor. You'll remember him from SingOff. He looks a lot different with the beard.
The second singer was Rob Lundquist, our favorite gopher tenor.
Tim is the bass. His range is unbelievable. He can go high as well.

Home Free decribes itself as a country acapella band, but they do many other things as well. You cannot pin them down to one genre. There is no lead singer. They either take different verses as they did here or pick the member whose voice best fits the song. So here are the guys and a recommendation that features each of them as the lead:

Tim Foust is Home Free's bass . He has a five octave range. If you saw them at The Sing Off , then might remember Jewel commenting how Tim could go from a tenor to a bass.
The bass that you are thinking of is Geoff Castelluci from Voiceolay. Voiceplay was on the same season as Home Free. Geoff wasn't featured that much during the competition. The two groups because friends. They made a fun video of Survivor, one of the songs for the elimination challenge , called Zombies vs. Hillbillies.
Adam Rupp is their best boxer. He can also sing tenor. He and his brother Chris were co-founders of the group. They were both on The Sing-Off. Chris sang baritone and later resigned from the group to do his own personal projects.
Chris was replaced by Adam Chance as a baritone/bass. He has a four octave range. He is called Chance to avoid confusion with the two Adams. Chance is an alumnus of The Sing Off too. He was the bass for Street Corner Symphony that placed second on the second season of The Sing-Off. He makes the

I believe you're thinking about a 'Jaw Harp', Shaw. PLUS...out of the many dozens of reactors that I listen to, you're so far the only one who seemingly even heard that octave drop at the end of Tim's (the bass) solo, and that includes many music/voice teachers. Most of the artists here have additional talents besides just singing. Rob Lundquist (Tenor) the one with the best beard is a world class whistler for instance.

The beginning instrument that you're questioning is a mouth harp or juice harp as some call it. I believe Adam Chance is mixing that sound with the sound of a digeridoo which is very unique in itself. Also, all of the sounds are vocal. Adam Rupp is our vocal percussionist extraordinaire... he's said to have swallowed a drum kit. That digerido sound is done by Adam Chance (known as Chance) and is like Tibetan throat singing replicating a juice harp... it's done on a looper. Also, I think the higher harmonica is done by Austin Brown (high tenor). The two tenors (Austin and Rob Lundquist) will knock your socks off with their version of Nessum Dorma on the video Two Country Singers Try Singing Opera. Home Free is the best--period. It's easy to forget they are completely acapella and make all "instrumental" sounds themselves.
In this song they are making a distinct southern (country blues) presentation--it definitely fits the lyrics of the song. Chance doing the jaw harp sound really sets the stage for this song's story, which Austin's twang fits phenomenally. Tim's bass line completely grounds the harmonies and Adam's voice percussion simply cannot be beat. This performance highlights a lot of Home Free's strengths although they also handle ANY other genre just as amazingly❣️🎼🥰🎶❤️

Mouth harp, juice harp, jaw harp, it depends which part of the South you hail from, is the instrument you are thinking of. It is a small metal U shaped hand held with a spring wire attached to the bottom curve of the U. It is held between the lips while plucking the spring wire and changing the aperture of the the open mouth, pitch can be altered and resonance is provided by the mouth cavity. The lower registers can sound similar to a didgeridoo.This sound came from the baritone singer in the band, Adam Chance (Chance) and is the very last person you see at the end of the song providing the droning sound on the outro. Adam Rupp is the beat boxer extraordinaire, but you will find that all of these guys can mimic Instruments when need arises.

(Tim Foust is the bass for Home Free, Geoff Castellucci is bass for Voice Play) Tim Foust has a voice range from deep bass to tenor. He has such a rich voice like Avi. Bass's can hit low notes but to SING those low notes is the quality. In Misty Mountains you get two voices and a whole lot of layering. Beautiful!
Adam Chance was using a throat singing technique to sound like the jaw harp. He uses a looper for live performances because he says it hurts his voice to do it throughout the song.
A didgeridoo is a wind instrument played with vibrating lips to produce a continuous drone. It was developed by Aboriginal peoples of northern Australia at least 1,000 years ago and is now in use around the world.
Tim, Avi and Geoff are all amazing and I really, really hope that you'll react to more work by all of them, both solo and with others.

Adam Rupp is their world class beatboxer, but he can also sing. Tim Foust is their bass with crazy range. He can go down to E1 chest fry, then up to a E4.. Jeff Castelucci is the bass for Voiceplay. Austin Brown and Rob Lundquist (glasses and beard) are the tenors. You wouldn't know it from this song, but Rob can actually sing opera quite beautifully. He and Austin recently did Nessun Dorma, made me cry!

Two bass singers - Tim Foust, doing the solos. Adam Chance is the other. He mostly sings in baritone, but the man can go SUPER LOW. Chance is also the guy doing the mouth harp sound (that sounds like a didgeridoo). When they all harmonize, you can hear both bass voices.

The mouth harp, or jaw harp sound is made by Chance (last one in video). When live he does it on a looper as it hurts his voice to do it too long.
