I've read a theory that Annihilape is actually what happens when a Primeape DOESN'T die from being too angry. Primeape can only evolve after using a move that turns its rage into energy over and over again. And so, when it reaches that otherwise lethal rage, it knows how to release it as energy and survive.
Primeape died from myocarditis. Myo means muscle, cardi means heart and ditis means inflammation. The inflammation of the heart muscle. He was able to evolve from this illness and made a full recovery. Thank you for watching. Take care of yourself and be well.
Mankey and Primeape have been my top 2 favorite pokemon all the way since the Primeape goes Bananas Episode of the original series. I was so happy when they finally got their third stage evolution. It was always rumored and "leaked" for the last few gens ever since regional variants were introduced. Gen 9 is one of my favorite guns specifically for this ghost ape. It's just icing on the cake that it is also OP for a ghost/fighting type
Not only that, but Rage Fist got Annihilape banned from Smogon's OU tier - its standard mode of play. It helps that our angry ghost monke has the bulk to take the two or so hits it needs to turn Rage Fist into a 150 power move - which, by the way, does not decrease in power when the user is switched out or even if they faint and are later revived by Revival Blessing. It can run a Bulk Up set with Drain Punch, Rage Fist and either Taunt or Rest, and can run a Careful nature with 240 HP EVs, max Special Defense, and 16 Speed EVs.
Y'know Lockstin, your commitment to the bit and presentation here were fantastic. Plus, it's a video about an absolute menace of early Gen 9 OU, so that's pretty cool too.
Annihilape is my favorite of the Gen IX evolutions -- a very creative Pokémon based on a previous entry for Primeape. I appreciate the amount of depth you went into on the clinical rationale for how Rage Fist caused Primeape to die an evolve, and the story aspect you provided was a cool take on it too. I hope to have one on my team when I start a "Pokémon Scarlet" file next month.
I feel creeped out about that x-ray of Annihilape in the thumbnail. I never thought that it would be 100% skull 💀. Though, I guess it makes sense given its design.
“During the autopsy, something strange happened. Before the body could even be studied, the body started to move again, and even stranger, it changed colour and grew larger. But how is this possible? The Primape was confirmed to be deceased. It’s heart had stopped beating long ago. The rapid change in colour wasn’t some rapid decomposition, the scientists thought. No, this was something different. This, was evolution, something previously thought impossible for Primape’s. With that, the Primape, now turned Annihilape, was no longer deceased. In fact it was very much alive, able to eat sleep, and move without any health issues. And thus the patient, even after death, was able to make a full recovery”
2:10 except they do count as monkeys if you look at nested hierarchies/classifications. But in that sense it also makes them fish, if you go far back enough.
Love the chubbyemu impression! Makes this video all the better! I also wanted to add some of my own research into the Iberian origins of Annihilape. Interestingly, Spain’s Gibraltar is the location of the only living population of wild monkeys in Europe. They are Barbary macaques, which is relevant, as Mankey and Primeape are also partially based on Japanese macaques. These monkeys used to be significantly more prevalent throughout Europe and had lots of cultural significance to its people. Early civilizations gave them a sacred value, with images of Barbary macaques appearing in old tombs (thus Annihilape’s ghost type perhaps), and medieval Europe saw them being kept as high-value pets, often leashed onto heavy blocks or balls (maybe explaining Annihilape’s broken shackles on its arms; it’s been unleashed, so to speak). The most relevant interpretation for Annihilape is from the Greeks, who saw them as embodiments of the negative traits and vices of humanity (for example, anger). So, Annihilape is an angry ghost Barbary macaque that pulls from European history and how it treated the monkeys, and it’s in Paldea/Iberia because that’s where the last European population of them live today. It’s really perfect IMO.
I love how if you actually pay attention to Annilapes face, it does appear peaceful and this is great video perfectly explaining how an annihilape evolves from Primeape
Trainer: Annihilape, use close combat! Annihilape: DIE ONE THOUSAND DEATHS! Annihilape teleports to the wild lechonk and uses close combat. Lechonk "fainted"
Hilariously this video explained to me why in the Sims 4 the death name for having your sim be enraged for too long is called “cardiac explosion”. Checks out!
My grandmother has told me a story multiple times about how one of my great great grandfathers died. His cattle land was forcibly cut in two by the government so they could pave a road through it. It negatively affected the behavior of the cows, notably they refused to cross the road or go through the tunnel built under the road to accommodate them on their own, but they needed to go back and forth to access water at the creek. This angered him to no end until one day he fell over dead in his lunch from a stroke.
Ever since I saw Annahilape I always felt it was an amazing reference to the Ultra Instinct transformation of DragonBall Super! Definitely one of my favorite Pokémon.
