Mark Ferrari is a true legend. I still remember playing „The Secret of Monkey Island“ in the early 90s on my Amiga 600. I still play it today on modern Apple Computers. I like also some of his „Thimbleweed Park“ Backgrounds.

Daniel, thank you so much, but really so much for this interview.
Since many years I was trying to research the begind the scenes of those games. I wanted to be part of this funny crowd that made this fascinating adventures.
And now I could feel a little bit nearer, and having the chance to listen the real creators it's just unique.
If you have some project related to this I'll be glad to help you with. Cheers🎉

Great interview! for me It´s always a pleasure to see a legend like Mark talking about his life and work. His works really changed my life forever since I was a child, back in the good old days of Loom, Monkey Island, Indiana Jones...
I love to do pixel art when I have some time for it and thanks to his influence, (among many other incredible artists) I became, now many years ago, a 2D and 3D artist working in the videogame industry and I hope for many years more.

What a great enjoyable episode. Thank you Daniel and Mark for your time and ethusiasm! Just a compliment to Daniel: You've really come into your own with these talks. I immediately noticed the first question about Mark's art background, and his response was along the lines of the first question is usually about his programming background. It shows your planning ahead of time. The perspective and discussion about art and games was really intriguing. Well done (as usual).
On a side note: I need a Loom screen protector. (I'm very unhappy with my Monkey Island screen protector from Thailand.)

Just want to thank you guys for rekindling my love of adventure games. You perfectly execute interviews by letting the interviewee speak their mind comfortably while bringing up insightful questions, topics, or feedback from your own experiences that prompt them to share more. I've listened to many interviews of these same people over the years, but I have learned so many things I had never heard before. It really puts into perspective the struggles and triumphs they went through during the creation of the classic games which gave me so many joyful childhood memories and molded my comedic preferences. Your playthroughs give me a chance to relive memories of experiencing the games for the first time (even though it can feel like I'm playing for the first time when I struggle to solve some of the puzzles). Keep up the great work. I'm excited to see what you have planned!

These interviews you are making are awesome! Like Mark says, the people at Lucasfilm Games were an interesting group and it's great to hear their thoughts about their work and their motivation. Mark has also made some very good points about creativity, I completely agree with him.
Daniel, thank you also for the efforts to start off a sequel for Loom. I hope it all comes together, even if I'm sure it won't be easy.

Imagine leaving earth (Sorry Mark i can't resist to joke). Realising you were Leonardo Da Pixely. I still wonder if Mark actually was the first to really do dithering or if other game companies did it before him. Mark feels a bit like Eddie Van Halen of Pixelart to me. Mark may not have been the first artist to use dithering, but it seems like he took dithering to the next level so all the other game companies followed and the color cycling is amazing, similar to EVH on the guitar!
Great that you let Mark go on and just talk. I had no idea he did that nice Chrome:ish logo, that's the best one, i remember it so well! Also when he got to compare the EGA vs VGA was an interesting segment. I hated what they did to the Monkey Island remakes a disgrace to Mark's art, it's so sad that some people seems to believe Mark had anything to do with it. It wasn't even close to his artistic sensibilities in any shape or form. I hope we get to see more pixelart from Mark with Terrible Toy Box, and that the Return To Monkey Island was just a confusion of mind just like in the end of the 90's when Lucas went down hill! 2d games it is!

Very nice interview, but those animated backgrounds are VERY distracting.
Indy 4 had a lot of hand-made dithering, so it could be that Mark worked on it.
    Best wishes.

Having no general interest in arts, somehow this interview kept me. Which speaks volumes about the quality of your content. One small thing, that is not complain but just feedback! in some very small moments where I was expecting a more in-depth "connection" with the speaker you seemed kind of one-dimensional. for example when 1:20:10 he mentioned about the brain injury, it felt like an almost emotional confession and on the other screen there was not much of a reaction, switching between screens etc. I am sorry, not really sure how to make it sound just as feedback and not criticism as writing is much different than talking - but it's just feedback and nothing more. does not say anything for you as a person or an interviewer. I hope it makes sense

    • @danielalbu
      @danielalbu 11 місяців тому +1

I'll begin by thanking you for the feedback.
Regarding the matter at hand, as you may have seen in my previous interviews, I do extensive research on the people I interview.
So, I was well aware of his brain injury, but at 1:20:10 he mentioned it as an afterthought and kept his lighthearted mood while talking about it, because he was answering something else entirely.
However, I didn't want to overlook this important topic.
So, I quickly updated my notes to make sure I could bring it up later in the conversation and give it the attention it deserved.
And so when we get back to that subject at 1:38:34, he's in a more serious mood and he's getting my full attention (which he gets regardless throughout the interview).
I sincerely hope this clarifies any misunderstanding regarding my approach.
My intention was never to diminish the significance of his side note about his brain injury.
On the contrary, I aimed to give it the attention it warranted so that it would be properly acknowledged.
Again, thank you for the feedback.

@@danielalbu thank you very much. And once again, I want to be clear that I did not say that you didnt care, as that would be way too heavy and wrong. Just what I might have liked to see in the moment. You are there live and you probably have a million things going on, and as you said you took the note for later. So thank you for taking the time to reply - you are a great interviewer and CLEARLY you invest tons of time in the research, which was actually what kept someone ignorant like me interested. Thank you again for all the time you put in this and I hope the above is clear!
