  • Color cycling was born out of hardware restrictions but out of it came some beautiful artworks that characterized the 80s and 90s. In this video we will learn more about how this effect was produced and experience first hand the beautiful artwork created with it.

There is a great game engine built with these old school effects in mind called Tilengine. It’s worth checking out for anyone still interested in this old school technique.

Deluxe Paint IV is still an amazing, compact piece of software. Integrated 2.5D Animation, extensive Array Tools, Special Fills and lots of other tools that cannot be found in modern software, especially achieved through a pretty simple user interface. Computer Power has increased, but good and inspired programming, still shines.

Excellent color cycling example is the "Dazzle" DOS screensaver software! The computer generated art is just stunning! 😉

Mark Ferrari is the man! I played Monkey Island and Maniac Mansion more times than I can remember. I love pixel art. I just bought Thimbleweed Park today after learning it actually came out and I can play it on my phone! It's literally downloading.

Windows 7's boot screen had a neat spinner that was also animated using color cycling. It's so good that everyone thinks it's multiple frames.

Interesting and informative video. However, I was hoping to find more information on how to achieve color cycling in Photoshop. Any help in this regards would be so appreciated. Thanks, and keep up the good work!

I grew up playing 16 and 256 colour games in the 1990s on IBM PC so am familiar with these vintage graphic games and I love the look of them, thanks for sharing this detailed video on how these early graphics were done.

the demos are amazing i love it. colour cycling is so simple yet so amazing. many people think index colours are primitive since now every machine has the ability to produce true colours but index colours can do magic with very little processing power.

Great video, colour cycling was such an important tool for early 16bit software. Even being forgotton later on in that generation!

Haha that was great. Trip down memory lane there. I never really mastered the art of colour cycling to make great use of it but I did have a passion for making fractal images and then colour cycling those in Deluxe Paint. You had a quick blip of a clip in the video.

Great! BTW Bridge Strike game is new game that uses colorcycling for weather changes an night and day cycle. It was made in 2018 for old Amiga computers but its modern version is available also for Android and IOS ;)

That is certainly the case! For that reason some artists restrict themselves with the tools they use. Nowadays it's certainly easier to get lost in the myriad of option in software and hardware.

Can anyone give give me a hint how to export color cycled images from GrafX2 ? I would like to resuscitate this old technique and use it for pixel art games but obviously some additional pieces of code are necessary as gif cannot store these images...

Absolutely a shame its not used much anymore but i think the primary the reason for this is that most video modes (notably 24bit and higher) does not use indexed colors but rather the raw RGB (or other representations) values directly in the pixel. You can't color cycle if its not indexed.

Soebody old understand how not only to display the effect in the program, but display it as an animation and make a gif?) because when saving the image, colors remain static((((

As a reminder, game hut was popular till he pushed for a business for streaming video of a video game which takes more data than the game itself. He tried to start that business and after that I don't think he ever made another video cause everyone realized how bad and stupid of an idea it really is.
